As readers of our previous newslettermay know, Blake and I were marriedin June in Portland, Oregon. Itwas alovely celebration. Our officiant wasour friend Liz, an Episcopalian chap-lain, who pronounced us husband andwife by the power invested in her byLife, the Universe, and Everything. Both Blake and I wore red sneakersand made our guests follow usthrough town like we were the PiedPiper. We walked to the carnival onthe waterfront, rode the Ferris wheel, and carnies stopped us to give us freestuffed animals. Strangers on thestreet congratulated us. Teenagedgirls squealed over my dress. Oddhow putting on a foofy white dresscan make people go a little nutty. At the Chinese banquet, my motherand her friends from Taiwan ap-proved of the food and my newmother-in-law ate everything exceptthe shark's fin soup. And the nextday, at the picnic reception, the rainpoured, but our friends came out any-way, wrapped in their Marmot parkasin the middle of June. We feted underrain canopies with wine, Marimbamusic, and our wedding cake withchocolate frosting. In the end, as much as we thought thewedding was about us, it wasn't. Itwas a time for family to come to-gether, a reunion of friends, a celebra-tion of life. It was a time for dispa-

rate parts of our lives to meet, totogether in a ragtag, multi-ethnic, naltogether-neat puzzle. Bei Dao ReadingBy Sabina Chen &Darja FilippovaOn July 29th, CCC was honored tohost a reading by the internationallyacclaimed poet, Bei Dao. Dubbed thevoice of a generation of Chinese, BeiDao's poetry has been translated toover 25 languages. He has won nu-merous prestigious awards, and is re-peatedly nominated for the NobelPrize in Literature.Born in the pivotal year of 1949, thepoet's youth was marked by devotionto the state ideology. In fact, in unisonwith his generation, he became amember of the infamous Red Guards, and following the Cultural Revolu-tion, was sent to be "reeducated" inthe countryside. The 11 years he spentdoing labor in the countryside havebeen definitive, fostering the sense ofdisillusion and alienation that seepsthrough his work. Bei Dao firstgained recognition through his par-ticipation with the Misty poets, whocollaboratively published the progres-

sive literary magazine,Today. Following the 1989Tiananmen Square pro-tests, the magazine and themovement was banned, and Bei Dao was forcedinto exile. The poet hassince been living andpublishing abroad, takingresidence in Germany, Picture left to right: Abby Chen, Bei Dao and Sabina CSweden, Norway and settling in theU.S., where he has been lecturing atvarious universities. To read BeiDao's interview in both English andChinese, visit c-c-c.org.At the reading hosted by CCC, Bei Daoread from both published and newworks in Mandarin, while the Englishtranslations were read by the writerLillian Howan. It was an afternoon ofthe poet's generosity, as Bei Dao an-swered the audience's questions in both. . , .Mandarin and English, questions rang-ing from poetic aesthetics to politics,

language, imagery, suffering, auence, and home.In response to a question of whethe wrote in Chinese or English,Dao responded that he wrote in Cnese because, "if you write poetrylanguages other than your own, tyou are a liar." And then he add"Chinese is the best language foretry."This event at CCC was Bei Dao'sreading while in exile. He movedHong Kong at the end of July.

A Remembrance of Lucy LintBy Sabina ChenLucy Lim, Executive Director of the for herself as an excellent scholar."Chinese Culture Center from 1981-1991, passed away in London on June15,2007.An uncompromising perfectionist,Lucy brought a standard of excellenceto the Center's exhibitions during hertenure. Her exhibitions showcased herpassion for contemporary Chinese art, introducing these works to the Ameri-can audience for the first time. Lucy'svision elevated the Center's influenceto an international level, being the firstorganization to bridge the contempo-rary Chinese art world to the UnitedStates."Nobody knew about contemporaryChinese painting in the mid-1980's,"said Wylie Wong, former CCF boardmember. "Everyone was studying an-cient traditional Chinese painting. And here was Lucy showing us thatChinese painting was alive and welland the beginning of a new age.""Lucy was a moving force to bringcontemporary Chinese painting toAmerica," said Tatwina Lee, formerCCF Board President. "When she wasworking on an exhibition, she was aphenomenal researcher and very trueto the material. She set high standards

Groundbreaking exhibitions includedWu Guanzhong: A Contemporary Artist,Six Contemporary Chinese Women Art-ists, and Stories from China's Past: HanDynasty Pictorial Tomb Reliefs. Foreach of these exhibitions, Lucy re-searched, wrote, and published extensivecatalogues that remain standard text-books in Asian art history classes today."Lucy was very meticulous in researchand an excellent writer," said ManniLiu, former CCF staff and ExecutiveDirector. "She edited all the staff'swork to the comma. That tells a lotabout the quality of these exhibitions. Some people might say it was hard towork with Lucy, because of her highstandards. But once you came to under-stand her goal, it was easier to under-stand her work style. She wanted a per-fect product."Lucy Lim's legacy and influence withthe Chinese Culture Center and the con-temporary art world cannot be over-stated. Earlier this year in Beijing, WuGuanzhong's "Ancient City of Jiaohe"sold for $6 million. This painting hadbeen exhibited at the CCC Gallery andincluded in Lucy's catalogue. It was thehighest price paid for a work by a living

Chinese artist."So many of the artists that Lushowed are now major figures inChinese art scene," said Wylie Wo"When Lucy found these artists, twere unknown except for in the Cnese underground art scene. Withinto 10 years, those artists were sellfor 6 or 7 figures U.S. dollars. Thishow prescient Lucy was."
