Term 1 Week 7
Coleambally Central School
A Quality Education in your Community
10 March 2020
Welcome to Week 7 of term 1! 21st century education centres around developing within a child the ability to think for them-selves. To think critically and wade through the huge myriad of ‘information’ out there in our modern world. The most important academic skill therefore is being able to read. To do this successfully children must be able to;
Understand that markings make words and make meaning Learn to decode the letters to form sounds and words Understand the use of punctuation Draw upon a broad range of skills to decode trickier words Comprehend what they are reading and self-correct if meaning is lost Read with fluency
Children who read fluently are then able to access all other subjects and learn at their own pace. Children learn to read well by practising – A LOT. Please help your child become a flu-ent reader by having a variety of reading material at home, use the Library and make reading a priority, read aloud to your child and help them develop a love for the written word. Your child’s academic success can be greatly assisted by reading together regularly. Welcome Miss Hall Yesterday we welcomed Miss Gillian Hall, who commenced her position as Year 6 Classroom Teacher for the year. On behalf of the school community I would like to welcome Miss Hall into our school and thank her for accepting the Year 6 teaching position. We are all looking forward to working with you. Welcome aboard! Wednesday Afternoon Supervision As many community members would be aware, the funeral of Ella Painting will be held to-morrow afternoon. We wish to inform the school community that the school will operate on a restricted timetable from 12.30 pm, with an alternate timetable and supervision taking place until the end of the school day. We will have limited staff on site. The front office will remain operational, if you wish to sign your child out of school, please do so through the office. HSC Minimum Standard From 2020, students must demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to be eligible for the award of the Higher School Certificate. The school has commenced communi-cating this important change to the school community and a HSC Minimum Standard Fact Sheet for parents and carers will be attached to next week’s newsletter. Year 7 and Peer Leaders Borambola Excursion Today Year 7 and the Peer Support Leaders departed at 7.00 am for their two day camp at Borambola Sport and Recreation Camp near Wagga Wagga. The estimated time of arrival on return will be posted on the school’s Facebook page, as will photographs taken while on the camp.

Stage 2 Virtual Excursion Education technology can make learning more interactive and collaborative, and this can help students better engage with lessons. Rather than memorising facts, they learn ‘by doing’, for some students, interactivity provides a better learning experience. Tomor-row Stage 2 students will participate in a Cattle and Sheep Farming Virtual Classroom, which has been facilitated by the technology we now have access to. School Maintenance This week the verandah floor of the ‘Deni’ Block is being replaced. Early in the week classes will be timetabled into different rooms and staff from the English/Humanities faculty will be working from the old Mathematics Faculty Staffroom. We hope to have access to Room 11 and 12 by midweek. We apologise for any inconvenience, but I prefer to focus on the positive, a wonderful new verandah floor and the continuing upgrade of school facilities! Secondary Year Advisor Mr Rod Hughes has accepted the role of Year Advisor for Years 7-12. The main objective of the Year Advisor is to look after the wellbeing of all students in their group. There will be times in every student's school life where they will need extra support to cope with the stresses that arise both in and out of school. We thank Mr Hughes for taking on the position. Finally…. Our door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. We need to know if we are not doing something right, but I also need to know that you trust our motives and intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. Also, give your child the most valuable gift in the world – a good education – so send them EVERY day. We have a great school and it
is such good value for very little money.
Until next week,
Timothy Allen

aintball Warfare!
On Sunday morning we arrived at Wagga Paintball and excitement was in the
air!
We put our suit and safety mask on then headed to the war ground.
Paintballs started flying everywhere through the air. The battlefield was a
nightmare! Bruises swelled up on everyone’s skin. - Tristan
It was fun until I got hit in the head. I was going to knock out Kayleb but the
Youth Worker stopped me. - Buddy
I got hit in the head by Tristan and Beau and have bruises all over my arm. I got
them back! - Kayleb
It was so much fun! The best shot was when Uncle Dookie hit three boys from
the old car. The other boys all came back with heaps of bruises but I only got
one. My finger really hurts- not sure who fired that one.
- Xavier
Paintball was fun, apart from getting hit in the jaw. In the second game, we
played ‘Capture the Flag’. The last activity was fun too until it turned into a
free-for-all when everyone got shot at least three times. At the end, Buddy and
I had a 1:1 shoot-out. - Beau
