Fink took the opportunity to remind people the importance of safety belts. “We (Fond du Lac County) had four fatalities this weekend and it looks like three out of four would have survived had they had their seat belts on,” he said. “I talk about safety belt use all the time.” As part of standard pro- cedure in a fatal crash, a blood draw was done on the driver and the three deceased. Results should be back in about 10 days, but Fink stressed that they do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash. Beechnut Road has a hill that leads down to a flat spot where the railroad tracks used to cross the road and now is a recre- ational trail. Right after the trail is another small hill. Rick Olig of the sheriff’s department, stated that they believe the vehicle traveled at a high rate of speed down the first hill and across the trail and started to go up the sec- ond hill. “As it did that, the driver lost control,” Olig said. He stated the vehicle traveled about 700 feet before coming to rest in a plowed field. “They had traveled quite a ways at an angle,” Olig said. The sheriff’s department has been talking with Ottery, who was the driver of the vehicle. Fink stated that she has been very cooperative with the sher- iff’s department and has given them a lot of infor- mation about the events leading up to and after the accident. When asked if she will be charged in the acci- dent, Fink was not sure. He said they are investi- gating the details of the crash and will forward their information to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney. “That will then be some- thing the district attorney will need to determine,” Fink said.
