Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, This week has been a significant week for our Year 12 students as they edge closer to their final days at St Patrick’s College. This morning they had their farewell House assemblies, whilst tomorrow they participate in the very important Docudrama. Finally, Monday will see the entire College farewell to the Year 12 cohort at the Farewell Assembly. This is always a very powerful time as College community acknowledges and thanks the Year 12 students for their contributions to St Patrick’s College. I extend an invitation to all families to join the staff, students and Year 12 parents on Monday in the Callan Centre at 8.45am. This week also sees two other significant gatherings. Firstly, the co-curricular Awards Assembly was held on Tuesday. I congratulate firstly all students who were involved in the co-curricular program this tri-mester. In particular, I congratulate those students who were Award winners. The College’s co-curricular program is an integral part of the holistic education offered at St Patrick’s College and I encourage all students to continue to be involved. The second major gathering this is the Celebration of Excellence on Friday night. This is the major formal gathering for the College Community in 2011 and I again encourage all families to attend. The evening will commence at 6.30pm for 7.00pm start and will conclude by 9.30pm. The Celebration of Excellence is an opportunity for the College community to reflect, celebrate and acknowledge the events of 2011 and join as a community in congratulating the students who have received awards in study, sport, cultural and other special areas of College life. I hope to see you there on Friday night. As the end of the 2011 academic year is fast approaching I take this opportunity to remind parents and students that assignments and exams will be upon us very soon. With just on three weeks of school remaining for the students it is very important that attention is given to completing all assessment requirements and preparing for exams. I ask parents to support their sons by ensuring regular homework and study is being completed each night. Finally this week I wish to give my support to the St Patrick’s College Triathlon which will be held on Saturday 12 November in front of the College. This will be fun and exciting event and is open to students and adults from St Patrick’s College but from other schools also. Entry can be done online via the College website. Come along and have a fun morning. Have a great week. God Bless
Dr Michael Carroll College Principal

TUCKSHOP VOLUNTEERS SPECIAL DAY OF THANKS Education Minister Cameron Dick has announced the contribution of tuckshop workers would be officially recognised each year on the first Friday in November, with the first celebration on November 4 this year. The inaugural ‘Tuckshop Day’ will occur this Friday. Our numerous tuckshop workers provide a vital service for our community. They provide nutritional breakfast, morning tea and lunch every day plus they add a great positive feel to each school day. We thank all the people who have been able to volunteer some time to help provide a wonderful ser-vice. Amongst the work it generally is a fun time in our tuckshop and I encourage anyone who can provide a spare day to help in our tuckshop to contact Ms Demetria Karydas on 36319050.
Remember to RSVP to the tuckshop by Monday for the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop volunteers evening at the Seaview Hotel on Friday 11 November.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM— CHRIS CAMPBELL
At the commencement of 2011 Mr Mark Ellison accepted a newly created position at the College titled “Curriculum Leader Justice and Peace,” In this role, Mark’s job was to consider the structure of the St Pat-rick’s academic curriculum and look for ways to incorporate an application of the many moral perspectives and decisions facing young people today. With a number of current curriculum focus areas at St Patrick’s, including The National Curriculum, incorpo-ration of technology and the development of higher order thinking skills, the concept of justice and peace in the Curriculum is a way to provide a content for the integration of our major focus areas. Both Mark and the Heads of Curriculum have done an excellent job so far this year, creating units, assign-ments and activities across subject areas and year levels. The next step in the project is to begin drawing some of these things together to develop a co-ordinated and sequential approach for teaching specific jus-tice and peace themes across the College. The most appropriate starting point for this venture is the “National Curriculum Cross-Curricular Priorities”. As such we must consider a couple of key areas in particu-lar “ sustainability” and “Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Perspectives”. Last Wednesday, Mark addressed our Heads of Curriculum and Curriculum Leaders on the need to work together to co-ordinate an effective scope, sequence and timing of themes, goals and activities from Years 5-12, across all common curriculum elements. By so doing we will be able to cover key areas but avoid rep-etition or doubling up on resources. Some of the initiatives being considered are as follows: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives Making boomerangs in Manual Arts Art, Music and Drama as part of Australian Aboriginal history and culture Indigenous games in Health and Physical Education Representation of the Indigenous in the media The study of the Dreaming - The source of aboriginal creation Sustainability Rainforests, natural hazards, endangered species in Study of Society and Environment Sustainable and renewable energy - Science Eco-tourism—political upheaval in Asia - Pacific Food Production in Health and Physical Education Coastal management in Geography These are just some of the areas being developed. My thanks to Mr Ellison and all Heads of Curriculum for the work being carried out in this exciting area.

STUDENTS
This was the last week of normal classes for our Year 12s. It is important that they finish positively and
calmly. As always the Seniors help set the tone for the rest of the College. We have worked with the Year
12s to emphasise this point. We believe that students must maintain their focus on their final assessment as
significant changes can still occur with their Senior results. A series of activities have been planned to allow
appropriate celebration of the achievement of finishing 12 years of studies. We believe this must be done
appropriately. Yesterday the House Deans led the Seniors in the concluding phase of a Rite of Passage
program. The Year 12 students were acknowledged at farewell House Assemblies today and on Friday
will be involved in a Docudrama to support them as they enter the adult world. At the conclusion of the
Docudrama the young men will conclude with their final exit. On Monday there will be House breakfasts,
followed by farewell Tutor Groups and then a highly emotional Farewell Assembly from the College. These
are very significant and appropriate ways for the Year 12s to celebrate the end of their classes and to be
acknowledged.
All Year 12 families are reminded of the need to finalise tables for the Graduation Dinner with
Mrs. Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office.
HAIR
Last week I wrote in the calling requesting that families check the length of their son’s hair and make the
necessary arrangements to have their son’s hairstyle meet the College guidelines.
I am however disappointed that I am asking boys to have a haircut this week. The guidelines are in place
to maintain the standards that are expected from all members of our community. I remind all students
that their hair needs to be combed in a style that is appropriate for school.
HOUSE SHIELD
Congratulations to O’Rourke House for winning the overall House Shield. Their second place in the House
Choir was enough for them to gain the Shield. The competition continues to get closer with four different
Houses winning a competition this year. Well done to all the House Deans and the House staff for the moti-
vation they provide to every individual student in their House.
I again thank you for your support in maintaining these standards.
O’Rourke Seniors’ final thoughts In their last week of classes at St. Patricks’, the O’Rourke Year 12s were asked to give some of their best memories of their time at SPC. They said: “All the good times in O’Rourke 4 Tutor group” (Mitchell Wain) “Arriving at school each day to be greeted by all of my closest mates with smiles on their faces.” (Ryan Anderson) “Winning the House Shield in my final year.” (Tom Judd) “Our Year 10 Retreat in 2009 with my fellow O’Rourke boys.” (Louis Beveridge) “Coming second in 1sts Cricket this year” (Jack Ryan) “Lunch time chats with the boys.” (Brad Bitenc) “The care and concern shown by the O’Rourke staff and all the SPC staff.” (Mitch McCann) “The College Musical” (Mario Indelicato) “Mr. Brough’s Legal Studies classes.” (Alex Williams) “Lunch everyday with the boys.” (Paul Jones) “Working with Jackson Da forno and winning the House Shield.” (Blake Henley) “Going on Kairos Retreat with my mates and people I didn’t know very well.” (Kieren Noble) “Our O’Rourke Year 10 Retreat” (Liam Ford) “All the performances and tours with the SPC and SJFC Concert band. “ (Josh Cathcart) “Going to Canberra and going to Parliament.” (Mathew Makot) “The Formal and the College Musical.” (Wyatt Bailey) “Helping to train the CIC Athletics boys” (Brayden Ross) “All the Retreats and days out with the O’Rourke boys” (Jack Reedman) “Playing sport for the school” ( Dan Reed) “My India Immersion experience last year.” (Jackson Da Forno) All the best boys and good luck for the future

2 011 has been a great first year for Rice House.
We have achieved many successes, such as
third place at Inter-House cross country, athletics
and swimming and we know that there is potential
for plenty of success. In the future. More important-
ly, we came together as a new House and started
to develop a culture that we believe will hold Rice in
good stead going into the future. Whether that be
raising awareness for refugees through the “Rice
Aid” concert at Showcase, playing Inter-House
chess, or even just hanging out with our Little Broth-
ers. This could not have been achieved without the
amazing work of Mr John Cross, our dedicated
House Dean, and our brilliant Group Tutors. To them we offer our gratitude, for they have made this year the best year of
our schooling life. We would also offer our congratulations to Damien Tatum and Michael Xanthopoulo on their appointments
as Rice Leaders for 2012.
As the Rice Seniors of 2011, we all have very different memories of our final year which are hard to sum up in a few
sentences. Here are just a few of our thoughts……….
Chris Holley: While this year has been extremely stressful, it has been completely worthwhile.
Callum Graham: 2011 was a great year that was challenging the whole time. SPC has certainly been an adventure!
Mack Budgen: The whole experience has been my best memory - too many to pick out just one.
Jordan Cottee: I’ll miss the touch footy at lunch times and while I know that my time at SPC is coming to an end, I’ll always be
a Paddies Boy!!
Anthony Koda: Year 12 was an elegant and spiritually enlightening experience.
Jordan Budgen: I’ve loved every second of my school life at SPC, it couldn’t have been better.
Sam Garven: Enjoy yourself as much as possible: your SPC journey really does go quickly.
Nathan Peereboom: SPC has been such a big part of my life and I’ve met some great people in that time and will have fond
memories of SPC, but am looking forward to the next stage of my life.
Douglas Howieson: Being one of a few students who have been in three different Houses at SPC has made my time special.
Jack O’Dempsey: It’s been one great “ride” and I’ll miss the teachers and students but I know I’ll take lots of memories with
me.
Jackson Ritchie: This year has been the best time of my life so far!!
Joshua Steen: I don’t think my parents could have chosen a better school for me and I’m going to really miss SPC.
Jacob Read: My favourite memory of SPC was the Indonesian trip in Year 10 – great times!
Matthew Edgar: This year has been just fantastic; I don’t know what to do now my schooling life is nearly finished!
The end is nearly upon us, and soon it will be time for the Rice Seniors of 2011 to leave forever. However, Rice House is be-
ing left in good hands, and we are sure that our newly appointed House Leaders, Damien and Michael, will do an excellent
job in leading Rice next year. The Rice Seniors of 2011, would like to wish all the Rice men the very best for the future. We
hope you all have an enjoyable and safe Christmas break.

T his is always an interesting time of year during school life as we begin the count down towards the end of the year. It is always amazing to see what remarkable young men the Year 12’s have become and how the Year 11’s blossom into their roles as the future leaders of our school. It was a privilege last week to
attend the year 11 leadership camp and watch and listen to the young men of Year 11 enthusiastically embrace their roles for next year. It is always easy to look to the future with enthusiasm and excitement going into year 12 and often the boys always have a number of plans they want to see their year group fulfil. However, the reality of the pressures of Year 12 soon hit the boys and some their best laid plans never come to the surface. This is not always a bad thing and it is always important for the young men to prioritise what is important and the reality is there are sometimes not enough hours in the day. On saying this we always tell the boys on many retreats to seize the day or “Carpe Diem” and never have any regrets. I hope that the boys leaving this year are exiting with few regrets.
I am not a parent but for many of the current Year 12’s I have been with them since they were in year eight. I know for me this time has passed quickly and I can only imagine how parents must feel seeing the child they nursed from birth now a grown man about to journey into the open world. When thinking about the current year 12’s you can look at all their faces in a crowded room and for each and every one of them you can think of a time they have bought a smile to your face by them just being who they are. That is one thing that will personally stand out for me with this year group the amount of times their gentle humour and good nature have bought a smile to my face. I will admit like all teachers there were times when maybe we were not the best of friends or did not see eye to eye but these times never lasted long. I can still remember having some of the current Year 12’s in a Year 9 Core A class and can just remember how much I looked forward to coming to this class everyday just to see the boys and have a laugh with them.
So to the Year 12’s I would have to say thank you for being you. Thank you for coming to school every day and giving it all you had. Thank you for contributing your talents to the school and to each other. Thank you for seizing the day and doing all you could to make your schooling life a memorable experience for all of us. Finally, thank you for the way you have supported each other through the times when we have laughed and shed a tear to-gether. I hope you make the rest of your lives extraordinary.
The group is often only as good as the individuals that form it and this group like all groups is full of individuals each with their own unique talent. Each individual always contributes their own talents to the group and everyone is a shining light that can help light the night. To end I would like to leave you with this passage, I think it sums up what we hope our boys are and what we hope they can be.
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5: 13-16
S port at St Patrick’s College is constantly growing from strength to strength and this was again evident in 2011. We have also witnessed higher levels of competition and professionalism across all sports in both the AIC and CIC, with many Col-
leges working hard on improving the overall standard of their sporting programs in general. St Patrick’s College has also worked hard to maintain its competitiveness and we are constantly striving for the future to im-prove as a result of these improvements. Now with the conclusion of both Basketball and Tennis, I would personally like to thank all the AIC and CIC coaching and man-agerial staff involved in both sports for their enthusiasm and commitment to these SPC Sports. Many thanks to all the students from Years 5 to 12 who participated and represented SPC in both codes of sport and to their parents who supported their son/s week in and week out during the 2011 Basketball and Tennis season. I would also like to recognise and thank all the families who have assisted greatly in giving up their time to run the Callan Centre Canteen on our ‘Home Games’ of Basketball in 2011, in particular the Duke Family and the Teeuwsen Family. Many thanks and praise must be given to both Mr Steve Copping (SPC Basketball Coordinator) and Br Chris Pritchard (SPC Tennis Coordinator) for the hours that they have given to ensure that the sports of Basketball and Tennis ran smoothly and suc-cessfully during the 2011 season. St Patrick’s College’s overall aggregate results within AIC (Associated Independent Colleges) at the conclusion of 2011 was: Cross Country – 1st Volleyball – 3rd Track and Field – 3rd Tennis – 5th Swimming – 5th Basketball – 7th Cricket – 7th Rugby – 7th Football – 8th Within the sports outlined above, St Patrick’s were rewarded with the following AIC Premierships: 13A AIC Volleyball Premiers 16A AIC Volleyball Premiers 15A AIC Football Premiership 13B AIC Tennis Premiership 13 Years AIC Cross Country Age Champions 14 Years AIC Cross Country Age Champions Open AIC Cross Country Age Champions AIC Cross Country Aggregate Premiership 11 Years CIC Track and Field Age Champions Our Year 5 to Year 7 students at St Patrick’s once again competed within the CIC (Combined Independent Colleges) sporting competition in 2011, comprising of 14 Independent Colleges. The sports of Cricket, Rugby, Football, Tennis, and Basketball are non-premiership sports with participation being the number one objective. The three major sports of Swimming, Cross Coun-try and Track & Field are indeed championship sports within the CIC model. St Patrick’s College ended the 2011 CIC Sporting years with the following results: Track and Field – 5th Overall (Out of 14 Colleges) Cross Country – 8th Overall (Out of 14 Colleges) Swimming – 3rd Green Division (10th Overall) Once again in 2011 St Patrick’s was well represented in: Under 14 and Under 16 AIC AFL Open Confraternity Rugby League Open Hockey AIC Open Golf Half Season Club Cricket AIC Water Polo

2011 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS On Saturday 20 August the St Patrick’s College Tennis Championships took place for all ages at Club
Coops, using seven courts, organised by Br Chris Pritchard and Alyssa Mole, LifeTime Tennis. Thanks to
Brad Harbottle, LifeTime Tennis, who phoned to wish us well from Townsville. The day was a perfect
spring morning with no cloud cover and little wind. There had been a large number of participants and
some 121 students had taken part. Many parents and siblings were on hand to assist, encourage and
console all players during the morning. The basic format for the day was a set (first to 6 games) with a
tie breaker if necessary (first to 7 points). All the earlier rounds to the semis had been played in the
three weeks prior to the ‘Finals Day.’ Congratulations to all competitors and the eventual College
Champions, 2011. The finals results were:

S wimming is now in its second week and already a number of boys are taking advantage of
the chance to get fit and swim faster. As previously mentioned, there are lots of activities and
goings-on to keep the boys training at 100%, including pizza parties, Sizzler and movie
nights, Freddos for our hardest trainers, and above all the opportunity to build your ‘athlete’s
engine’ and ultimately represent the College in AIC and CIC competition at Chandler. Our association
with international Swim Coach, Ken Wood (who is currently coaching 3 World Number 1 ranked swim-
mers), and his team continues this season. Packages with all the details for the upcoming season including
training times, carnival dates, swim camp and all extra activities are available from the Student Office.
There is no cost involved with training, and everyone is welcome. So to become the very best athlete you
can be, come down and get swimming!

SCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP
The St Patrick’s College Sport Support Group is a family group of volunteers that works tirelessly for the good of our young sportsmen and the improvement of their facilities to better their enjoyment and success in their chosen sports. On Monday 14 November at 6.30 pm in the College Board Room, entry via the main door of Morven Building and down the passage, we are holding our AGM. Each year there is ‘a changing of the guard’ as parents of Year 12 students depart and new parents ‘take up the slack’ for the coming year. All executive positions are vacated and nominations, and seconded, are called for to the Secretary either before the AGM or on the evening of the meeting. This is a special invitation to all those good parents who do well in supporting your son/s in various sports offered by St Patrick’s to come and be part of a dynamic group that tries to make a solid difference, and succeeds. Thanks! Br Chris Pritchard Secretary
