STEAM Program Article

On the, 16th of May, 21st of May and the 30th of May, a total of 10 students had the opportunity to attend the Full STEAM Ahead Program and travelled to the Power House Museum, Utimo & Commonwealth Bank in Darling Harbour. The following students; Marissa Ngov, Jezabel Huynh, Monica Phong, Alyssa Pham, Helen Zeng, Dawson Pham, Tyrone Keo, Raymond Thai, Brian Tran and Minh Dang, accompanied by Mr Pulham and Ms Raffie. In this program, we did various activities that included STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), using VR goggles, coding and the Hackathon. We had a wonderful journey throughout the STEAM program. I found that we learnt a lot as it wasn’t just any normal experience, it was an amazing experience. We did many activities such as solving puzzles, pixel painting, exploring VR, coding and using a thinker shield. The STEAM program is all about teaching students how to make games, code, learn key steps to being an engineer and participating in group challenges. We went to the Powerhouse Museum and even the Commonwealth Bank branch in the city. We had the opportunity to win VR headsets and even receive lots of free gifts for participating.

At the end of all of our excursions, we participated in a ‘Hackathon’. This has to be my favourite activity in the STEAM Program. Working in teams of 10 (our school was split in half and we had to work with other schools) we divided responsibilities amongst ourselves and created a digital, VR (virtual reality) game, based on a world problem. Our group chose pollution, therefore we created a game called ‘Save the Sea(s)’. This game was set in a divers’ perspective, with a fish swimming in a straight line and rubbish all around it. Our job was to clear the rubbish, and make a clear path for the fish to swim freely. During our experiences in the STEAM program we used different types of technology such as 3d printers, laptops, and the thinker shield. This was an amazing opportunity to improve my skills in technology thanks to my school. “My experience was very different to all the other excursions I’ve had. It was very unique of all excursion because we learnt about making videogames and how we can implement codes into them. I’ve never had more fun on a trip to the city. Working with other workers was a blast.” – Raymond Thai“My experience in the STEAM program was so amazing. I had one of the most amazing times and would recommend this to anyone who would like to code or be a gamer.” – Brian TranOverall, this experience was very fascinating as we did many activities which encouraged collaboration and teamwork.

ABC Behind the News (BTN) 50th Anniversary

ABC Behind the News (BTN) 50th AnniversaryOn Monday 4th June twenty Year 7 and Gifted & Talented (GAT) students attended a filming event for the 50th anniversary of popular ABC children’s news program Behind the News. This episode was filmed in conjunction with ABC’s QandA program, and involved many school groups from across NSW asking questions to a youth panel on a range of student-focussed issues. The event was filmed in the ABC studios at Ultimo near the Sydney CBD.Cabramatta High School was fortunate enough to be chosen as one school group that asked a question to the panel - that question being about the topic of ‘fake news’ in the media, and how young people may develop the critical-thinking skills to distinguish real news from artificial news.Overall it was a fantastic, enriching experience that both showed students how media is produced, and highlighted for students how many issues in the contemporary news media are also relevant to their own lives.

Meet the School Nurse Educator

My name is Isobel Hanson. I am the Nurse Educator at Cabramatta High

School, joining the team at the school in May this year. I work at the school one

day a week, on Mondays.

I trained as a registered nurse (RN) in Scotland, and have been an RN since

1978; I have been a RN in Australia since 1988.

I have been very fortunate to nurse in many areas of practice including as

an acute care nurse, in hospitals - for over twenty years, then as a primary

health nurse (community nurse), early childhood nurse, adolescent mental

health nurse, and as an aged care nurse and educator. I value person-centred care

and health promotion in my practice.

I appreciate the privilege of joining the team at Cabramatta High School and

being able to support them in their aim to promote the wellbeing of students at

the school.

Principal’s message by Ms Godwin

How to secure your future through educationIn a rapidly changing world employment opportunities are also changing. In a recent interview I was given a statistic that those entering the workforce, on average, are taking more than four years to embark on a career of their choosing. The skills that were once highly regarded as essential in the workforce are changing in line with a more ideas based and solutions based capabilities. Employers are valuing interpersonal and creative skills more than ever before. What does this mean for schools and the preparation of students for the future? What does this mean for families and students themselves?

Literacy and numeracy skills are still a high priority and this is supported by government strategies. High performance at school has status and gets attention in the media. For employers this is being overtaken by interpersonal skills, problem solving, creativity, resilience and communication skills. Team work and the ability to accept feedback are also highly valued.

Schools that provide a broad range of opportunities for students to develop these capabilities are preparing the students for success. Participation in sport allows for many of these skills to be demonstrated. An example of this is our school’s Table Tennis Team who are now Regional Champions. They set high standards for themselves, devoted time to develop skills, showed positive interactions and dedication. They can be relied on will make strong employees. Volunteering and community projects allow students to demonstrate these skills. Students that are fundraising for a charity project develop business plans, gather teams and set goals, communicate effectively to peers and the wider community, implement decisions and take responsibility for the outcomes. A recent example was students joining a school knitting project. Individuals and teams volunteered time, learnt a new skill and completed a task in a defined period. Volunteering and being involved in school events is a very powerful way of developing employment skills. Our school enables students to do this through joining event committees. We are currently organising an Annual Peace Day and the committee creating and implementing the plans has over thirty volunteering students. Given this chance and permission to create the students are taking this event to new heights. They are also showing creativity, consultative skills, commitment and courage. They are preparing themselves for their future.

My plea to parents is to seek more for children than the highest marks. Consideration to sport, extra curricula activities and creative pursuits will provide a broad set of skills paving the way for a positive future.Beth Godwin

Welfare sorry For Your Loss

Careers Corner

Dear Aboriginal / Torres Straight Members,I would firstly like to say sorry. I am a student studying indigenous culture and history and I am beginning to discover all of the horrific tragedies and losses indigenous families have endured throughout the stolen generations. It is a dreadful and appalling part of the history of Australia. I feel only sorrow. This letter is written because I absolutely believe that every victim of the stolen generation requires an apology, including you. Being an Australian means acknowledging the first peoples of the land and all of the adversity that they have experienced. I can empathise and feel that what you have experienced, but I cannot ever truly and fully experience the hell that you have been through. This is the worst time in the history of Australia and will never disappear. Writing this letter is the best that I can do. National Apology Day (Apology Anniversary) is the anniversary of when the former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, made an official apology to the stolen generations in 2008. This day allows us to acknowledge the Indigenous people, such as you. Every time the calendar reaches this very special day, the wound that the stolen generations caused heals and reinforces the bond between Australia and indigenous people. This day is to apologise for your hellish mistreatment. Again, I am sorry for the loss of your Aboriginal heritage.

I am sorry.

Yours sincerely, Vincent Le.

Cabramatta High Careers Market 2018

The Cabramatta High Careers Market was held earlier this term in conjunction with the Year 11 and Year 12 Parent Teacher Night. A variety of exhibitors were invited, including representatives from the major universities, TAFE, the Defence Force, private colleges and apprenticeship organisations.Over 320 students and their parents attended on the night and were able to visit the stalls, talk to representatives and collect information about courses and careers. Feedback from students was very positive with students all agreeing that the Careers Market was valuable in helping them plan to plan for their future. (I. Shchupak)

Public Speaking Competition - Quota International

Quota International Inc., founded in 1919, is a non-profit international service organisation with people of diversified occupations dedicated to a common cause: to serve those in need of help. Members of Quota International create projects which make an impact in our local community, and other communities around the world! On the 13th of June, 2018 Danijela Sekuljica of Year 10 attended the Quota International Quest and represented Cabramatta High School in the local community. The competition was divided into three segments: Danijela was first interviewed by a panel of three judges about her general knowledge and thoughts on current worldwide issues. She then presented a speech about environmental sustainability and participated in an impromptu one minute speech on the topic “future”. Danijela stated, “All in all, it was a great and memorable experience. Even if I did not win, what was more valuable was that I had the opportunity to meet some friendly students from other schools and I had the opportunity to talk to them about important issues in our society.”

Careers: Western Sydney University DayBy I. ShchupakThis term 130 Year 11 students attended the Western Sydney University U Day at Campbelltown campus. The day enabled the students to access important and valuable information about studying at university, as well as providing them with the opportunity to experience university life for a day. Students attended a variety of workshops of their choice, listened to current students relate their experiences and undertook campus tours. One of the students who addressed the high school students was Dave Do an ex-student of Cabramatta High School. Students came away feeling more confident and motivated about pursuing university studies after completing Year 12.

Bell Shakespeare Year 9Year 9 Bell Shakespeare ‘Shakespeare is Dead’ is the intriguing title of the play by Bell Shakespeare which Year 9 saw live at Cabra-Vale Diggers on Friday 4th May. The brilliant play follows three teenagers who ask an interesting question: It’s been 402 years since Shakespeare’s death, so why are we still performing and learning about his plays? The audience was taken on a journey to learn about how Shakespeare became the world’s greatest playwright. The play looked at Shakespeare’s language devices, how he invented words and phrases which are still in use today, where he got his inspiration and how he transformed his ideas into poetry. The characters Alex, Will and Mary dispelled the negative stereotypes of Shakespeare, such as Shakespeare is boring. As well as exploring how he wrote his plays, Shakespeare’s personal life was also investigated. The audience learnt that Shakespeare had a hard life before his success. It was difficult to be a writer and actor during that period. Despite his popularity, little is known about his life.Special thanks to our English teachers for helping with the organistion of the play, Bell Shakespeare for the free performance and Cabra-Vale Diggers for the use of the venue.Students of 9English 1.

Bell Shakespeare Year 10On Friday 4th May 200 students from Year 10 walked for approximately 20 minutes to Cabravale Diggers Club to watch a performance by members of the Bell Shakespeare company entitled ‘Macbeth: The Rehearsal’.The Bell Shakespeare Company was founded in 1990 by John Bell. One of its aims was to provide students of Australia with an introduction to Shakespeare and his work in a theatrical setting that would complement and enrich study done in the classroom. Bell Shakespeare provides this experience to students free of charge and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Bell Shakespeare for this wonderful opportunity. When we got to the venue, we were seated and the performance began almost immediately. The cast introduced themselves and briefly explained what the play ‘Macbeth’ was about. The cast acted out scenes from ‘Macbeth’, but in a rehearsal type format. The performance allowed students and teachers to dig more deeply into the story of Macbeth, but it also allowed us to see just how performances are created and how the actors convey the emotions of these characters. The performance blended humour and factual content humour in a creative and unique way to provide us with a detailed insight into the play. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and comments such as the performance contained “...a sense of realism… “ and was “...highly interactive...” were frequently mentioned afterward. All in all it was a great day full of education and learning. Students displayed exemplary behaviour at all times during the excursion, and were a credit to both their families and to Cabramatta High School. We would also like to say a special thanks to Cabravale Diggers for the generous donation of their venue, and once more to Bell Shakespeare for such a great experience.Carlos Altuve Rangel and Danijela SekuljicaYr10

Table Tennis = STATE !We’re going to State

On the 31st of May, Cabramatta High School’s table-tennis team earned the title of Sydney South West Table-Tennis Champions. The team competed in the finals against St. Johns Park High School at the Liverpool Whitlam Centre and won with four points to one. Cabramatta High has had such great success in table-tennis winning the region in back to back years.Coached by their teacher Mr. Rapinette, the team consisted of four boys including: Kanthanousinh (Owen) Sayaseng (Year 12), Tongsim Oeng (Year 12), Chon In (Thomas) Wong (Year 12), and Kanthanouxay (Max) Sayaseng (Year 9).

The team’s coach, Mr. Rapinette, remarked that the match with both schools were “our hardest games which came down to the wire”.After being asked about how he felt about the team’s victory, the coach replied “I am very ecstatic with the performance that the boys put into all of the matches. This should allow the team to perform well at the state tournament”. The State Championships will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Venue on Monday 2nd July.

The team competed against two schools before reaching the Central Venue Finals. Cabramatta first two matches with Fairvale High and Elizabeth Macarthur High both ended with a score of four-nil.They then proceeded to defeat Prairiewood High in the quarter finals and Hurlstone Agriculture High in the semi-finals with both nail biting results of four points to three.

Hey Guys

So I discovered this app that makes saving the environment fun. Have you heard of JouleBug. Its an app where you do something good for the environment and then upload it to the app. You earn points and sometimes you win prizes for biggest contribution like a $500 Myers Voucher. It has really easy and doable challenges like ‘Brush with greatness’ where you time how long the tap runs when brushing your teeth and try to reduce it each day. So, what can you do for the environment? Well, start by trying this app.

Working with WoodA group of staff from varying faculties had selected the Wellbeing PL - ‘Working with Wood’. In this short course, staff were introduced to the woodwork room in Block 3, workshop safety procedures and the use of various machines to produce a woodwork project. As time was short, a simple wooden chopping board was selected for the project. The nice twist to this story was that the timber was very special. Approximately 18 months ago an Australian Iron Bark tree was cut down in the Peace Garden for safety concerns. Rav Pillay, Head Teacher of Industrial Arts decided to have someone come to school and have the tree professionally milled. It has been stacked and seasoning in the Industrial Arts Construction section since. It was decided that this timber be utilised for the Wellbeing PL and staff who participated in this course would go away with a completed projected that had special meaning and have a memory of Cabramatta High for a long time!

Stargazing World Record Attempt On the cold night of Wednesday 23rd May, Cabramatta High School was involved in a Guinness World Record attempt hosted by ABC and The Australian National University. The World Record attempt, which included a live screening of Stargazing Live with Brian Cox, was to break the Guinness World Record for most people simultaneously observing an object in the night sky through a telescope. In 2015, the record was set by the Australian National University, with 7,960 participants. On that Wednesday night, the record was smashed five-fold, with over 40,000 participants from over 285 parties simultaneously observing the moon through telescopes and binoculars for 10 minutes straight. 180 students, staff, friends and families stationed on the back oval of Cabramatta High School oval put in the challenge. Of course, this would not have been possible without the

excellent organisation of the staff of Cabramatta High School. Mr Trainor, one of the stewards from the night, allowed us to explore the night sky in even more depth. He directed us towards cosmic objects, such as Jupiter with its 4 Galilean moons, the Orion nebula, and various constellations. Mr Vel, Ms Singh, and Mrs Pham were our helpful steward and stewardesses, who helped organize and supervise the event. Mr Hallab was our videographer and photographer (whose images and videos can be viewed via the Cabramatta High School Facebook page). Ms Thich ran the registrations, handing out the telescopes to be used on the night. Finally, Ms Godwin and Ms Piesse were our witnesses, confirming the number of attendees as counted by the stewards. It was a truly unforgettable night; the skies were clear and seeing everybody come together with their telescopes to observe the cosmos was truly magical.

All registered participants will receive a certificate from Guinness World Records.

Microsoft Multimedia Excursion Year 12 students were able to experience various multimedia applications currently in the

market at the Microsoft store Sydney. It was a great day where students were able to explore the store undertaking various tasks such as learning how to use a LinkedIn account to

automatically create a resume in Microsoft Word, explore various gaming systems, create a digital comic book and experience virtual and augmented reality by using the HTC Vive Pro. The students were able to get their score placed on a leader board for bragging rights. Prizes were also awarded for participation in the various store activities. The Microsoft staff did an outstanding job on the day and they were very hospitable. The students enjoyed the day.
