Greg ArceneauxCabinetmakers, Inc.

“Our whole business purpose is to preserve Louisiana’s unique culture and heritageand very few practice the art form of Louisiana furniture making,” said GregArceneaux of Greg Arceneaux Cabinetmakers, Inc.

By using Louisiana colonial designs and 18th century joinery and personally createdfinishes, Arceneaux combines modern machines and old hand skills to create heritagefurniture that will last — solid hardwoods of the area finished with a preparation oftung oil and French wax he developed about 20 years and uses on all his works to per-fect each piece.

A sculptor by education, he wanted to create something that would touch people intheir everyday lives. “Sculpture was not as fulfilling. Instead, I wanted to do somethingthat would impact people’s daily lives,” he said.

All his pieces are “totally functional” and meant to be used, not simply admired. He uses a mortise and tenon joinery to fit pieces together rather than nails. The

pieces fit together perfectly and once the wood expands on its own, it stays togetherbetter than with nails. Table aprons are fitted into the legs and finished with handmade square pegs.

His specially crafted finishes have been designed to withstand local humidity andclimate changes, unlike linseed oil which mildews in South Louisiana’s humidity.Arceneaux explained that the finish is the most important part, because it has to bedurable when the piece is completed.

He has appeared on specials including the history channel and WYES and haspieces in the Ogden Museum, Cabildo, Presbytere and private collections. He also haswon several awards, including the Best of Show at the Louisiana Jazz and HeritageFestival three times and the Sonata Award in 2008.

In fact, he recreated, down to the square pegs, the table used to sign the LouisianaPurchase and the benches used –all on display in the Cabildo. “Two years later, ourdaughter Sarah, then 12, was on a school field trip to the Cabildo and told the docent,“My daddy built the furniture.” The docent replied, “Oh no, dahlin’ this furniture is 250years old!”

His furniture includes custom and contemporary pieces meant to be used and cher-ished for many years to come. To see examples of his work, stop by his showroom at703 W. 26th Ave. in Covington, call 893-8782 or visit the website at www.gregarce-neaux.com.

Jimmy NelsonAutomotive

Word of Jimmy Nelson’s expertise gets around. The auto maintenance and repair shop owner rarely advertises and relies mostly

on word of mouth accolades to keep his Mandeville area shop full of customers.“We do the job right, don’t worry about how the other shops work or what they

charge,” Nelson said from Jimmy Nelson’s Automotive on Surgi Drive of LouisianaHighway 59 in Mandeville. “We do what should be done and charge a fair price.”

It is this honest service that continually feeds customers to the shop that has beenopened since June 1, 1994. It is the hard work that propelled Toyota in 1999 to selectJimmy’s Automotive to be part of the STAR program, a Toyota-sponsored programthat lends support and resources to Toyota’s after-market repair industry.

But Nelson doesn’t just work on Toyotas. He specializes in Acura, Honda and Lexus vehicles as well. But there is not a vehi-

cle Nelson can’t fix. Most of Jimmy’s customers have over 100,000 miles and somehave up to 400,000 miles on them due to his proper maintenance.

After 32 years experience, he’s earned certifications from the National ServiceInstitute for Automotive Service Excellence, a non-profit agency established toimprove vehicle repair quality and service.
