Writing: Formal Emails

• Formal emails have a number of features which are not present in more friendly emails.

1. The vocabulary is more formal: I am afraid I will not be able to attend the meeting on Friday. NOT I’m sorry I can’t make the meeting on Friday.

2. We tend to use fewer phrasal verbs: If any problems arise … (NOT … problems come up …)

3. We normally do not contract the verb forms: I am writing to inform you … (NOT I’m writing …)

4. We often use the passive:Your invoice will be sent next week.

5. We begin with: Dear Sir/Madam, Dear Mr./Ms. [surname]

6. We end with: Best regards, Sincerely
