September:
Universal: That volunteers may give themselves generously to the service of the needy.
Evangelization: That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and soci-ety.

Care of cremated remains:
The cremation instructions call attention to the care taken of the cremated remains. They should be treated with the same respect we give to the body of the deceased. The remains are to be placed in a worthy vessel which then is carried and transported with the same respect and attention given to a casket carrying a body.
Their final disposition is equally important: The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium (a cemetery vault designed for urns containing ashes of the dead). “The practice of
scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on
the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a
relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent
disposition that the Church requires. Also the remains
should never be separated and divided for keep sakes”. If at all possible, the place of entombment should be marked with a plaque or stone memorializing the deceased.
To love as Jesus did:
The rituals of the Catholic Church adapt to the cultural needs of its members. Sometimes the outward rites change, but basic beliefs and values are not sacrificed. The Church
continues to prefer and encourage the faithful to bury the bodies of their departed loved ones. However, if cremation is chosen for worthy motives, the Church wishes to support the faithful in honoring the life and memory of the departed.
In His peace, Deacon Dan DePozo

CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM
“To work for the proper implementation of canon law is to play an extraordinarily
constructive role in continuing the redemptive mission of Christ. “ Pope John Paul II
For the past weeks, we’ve been seeing a blank section of our parish bulletin intended to address all your questions and/or inquiries about matters that pertain the laws of the Catholic Church. Most of the inquiries I received zeroed in on this one
basic question: What is Canon Law?
Canon is the Greek word for rule, norm, standard or
measure. It is used in several ways in church language:
1. The canon of Sacred Scripture is the list of books
recognized by the church as inspired by the Holy Spirit.
2. Before the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican
Council, the single Eucharistic prayer used universally in the Latin Mass was called the Roman Canon. Now that there are four Eucharistic prayers in general use, they are usually referred to as Eucharistic Prayer I, II, III or IV, but they may also be called canons. The first of these is still called the Roman Canon because it is nearly identical to the original Roman Canon.
3. Canon is another name for a law in the Code of Canon
Law. (Adjective form is canonical.) Canon Law is a code of ecclesiastical laws governing the
Catholic Church. In the Latin or Western Church, the governing code is the 1983 Code of Canon Law, a revision of the 1917 Code of Canon Law. A separate but parallel Code of
Canons of the Eastern Churches, issued in 1990, governs the Eastern Catholic churches. That document was the first comprehensive code of church law governing all Eastern
Catholic churches.
Why is canon law important in the life of the Catholic Church? Since the Church is established as a social and visible structure, the Code of Canon Law is extremely necessary for its existence. The Catholic Church must be guided by norms in
order that:
• its hierarchical and organic structure be apparent;
• the exercise of the functions divinely entrusted to it,
especially that of sacred power and of the administration of the sacraments, be adequately organized;
• the mutual relations of the faithful be regulated according
to justice based upon charity, with the rights of individuals guaranteed and well-defined;
• and finally, that common initiatives undertaken to live a
Christian life ever more perfectly be sustained, strengthened and fostered by canonical laws.
In his apostolic constitution “Sacrae Disciplinae Leges”, Pope John Paul II points out that the purpose of the Code of Canon Law is “to create such an order in the ecclesial society, that, while assigning the primacy to love, grace and charism, it at the same time renders their organic development easier in the life both of the ecclesial society and of the individuals persons who belong to it.” In this sense the Code is an “indispensable instrument” of the Church’s life and vitality.
Pope John Paul II adds: “To work for the proper
implementation of the Code is to work for the upbuilding of
the Church herself. It is to work for the salvation of the
world. It is to play an extraordinarily constructive role in
continuing the redemptive mission of Christ himself.”
