Welcome Bishop Hoshibata - Please make plans to attend a Welcoming Worship Service and Reception for our newly appointed Bishop, Robert T. Hoshibata, on Sunday, September 30, 4:00 p.m. at First UMC in Phoenix, 5510 N. Central Ave.

Pew UpholsteringWe have kicked-off the fund-raising effort to allow us to re-upholster the pews this fall. We will announce our progress weekly toward our goal of raising $40,000. Thank you all for your generous gifts!

Faith Traditions - Next Monday, Sept. 17, the Monday Moms & Dads Group will begin a new study about other faith traditions using a book by Adam Hamilton, Christianity’s Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why. In addition to the topics covered in the book, we will explore Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism. Childcare will be offered. Interested? The Explorer’s Class kicks off its fall series with a 4-week study on sin. “Whatever Happened to Sin? Adam & Eve: Myth or Reality?” This series will explore different ideas of the origin of sin and evil in the world using a variety of sources. DVD segments, literature and discussion will be included. The class is open to all adults at 9:00 a.m. in the Adult Room. Coffee is served.

The Adult Contemporary Issues Class will study and discuss “Mythology, Religion and the Judeo-Christian Tradition.” We will explore mythology as “literature of the Spirit, a study of the inner life” and examine the function of Judeo-Christian symbols as keys to our spiritual understanding and how the wisdom of mythology can help us to know their true meaning. Class meets at 10:30 a.m. in the Adult Room.

UMOM Quilters - The next gathering for the UMOM Quilters is Wednesday, Sept. 12. We will be meeting in the Adult Room, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. If you have questions and would like more information, please write to [email protected].

Singles at Dayspring - Singles, Etc. Lunches - Each Sunday after the second service, those who want to go out for lunch as a group meet at the restaurant listed below. If you attend first service, please join us! We gather around noon under the name “Dayspring”. Sept. 9 - Olive Garden - NW corner of Elliot and Hardy.

Dinner Groups - Dayspring Dinner Groups are a great opportunity to get to know other members. Interested in participating? Stop by the Dinner Group table on the patio this morning, Sept. 9, or for further information, email [email protected] or call Nancy Creighton Brown at (480) 821-8696.

Family Promise - Dayspring will be providing temporary shelter to homeless families from the Family Promise Program Sept. 16 - 23. Volunteers are needed to help set-up/tear down, cook, spend the night, join the families on a Saturday excursion, wash laundry, and more. Sign-ups will be available after both services Sept. 9 and 16. Questions? Please direct them to Maria at (480) 636-0963.

UMOM Volunteers - We need volunteers to help with UMOM homeless shelter dinners on the following Sundays: Sept. 9 & 16; Oct. 14; Nov. 11 & 18; and December 9, 16 & 23. You would need to be at the center at 3:30 p.m. to help cook and would be done by shortly after 6:00 p.m. Please contact Carolyn Reid at [email protected] or (602) 882-5292 if you have any questions or would like to volunteer. Thanks so much for your help!

Brown Bag Lunch - Come join us for Brown Bag Lunch every Tuesday at noon. Bring your own lunch and socialize with people from the church. We always have a good time! Come and be a part of this fun group.

Mother / Daughter Retreat - Mingus Mountain UM Camp will host their 2nd annual Mother/Daughter Retreat, Sept. 21-23, 2012. We invite you to come and enjoy this beautiful setting together, and may this also be a time of growing closer to God. Cost is $100 for adults, $50 for daughters 10-17 ($25 for each additional daughter). Register by calling the Conference Camping Office at 800-229-8622, ext. 215.
