From the Vicarage... . . .We are so grateful for the warm andgenerous welcome we have receivedsince arriving in Bathford. The licensingservice was a very special occasion. The church looked stunning in theevening sun, with bunting and flag flying. The building was packed, and there wasa wonderful air of excitement. There wasa great sense of community as wegathered together and different parts ofthe community were represented duringthe service.

My first impressions of Bathford are thatit values its community identity. Peoplefrom both in and outside the vil lage havespoken highly of the sense of communityhere and said such things to me as ‘ifyou have to fal l i l l , Bathford is the placeto do it. You know there wil l be peoplehere who wil l help you’.

The Government has been talking of the‘Big Society’ over the past weeks. I twould seem that they have a vision of asociety in which more selfless caring isundertaken both within, and by,individual communities and in whichvoluntary bodies further develop theroles they already exercise in meetingthe needs of others. This of course isnot new territory for the church. Thewelfare state took over many of thefunctions once performed by churches atlocal level. Many wil l be famil iar with thepart social ly-minded Christians, such asWil l iam Bevereridge, played in shiftingperceptions towards a more benevolentview of state action, along withArchbishop Wil l iam Temple, who coinedthe phrase ‘Welfare State’.

The rise of social welfare came as aconsequence of Christians betterorganising themselves as the 1 9thcentury wore on but was not intended asa replacement for the care provided bychurches. Many of the professions that

The Bathford Bulletin Page 3

are vital to our public wellbeing todaywere, in large part, pioneered byvoluntary, rel igious bodies – nursing, social work, youth work, and teachingamong others.

Christians through the ages have beenmotivated to serve the needs of othersbecause of a belief in a God of love, whodid not remain aloof but entered intohuman experience in Jesus Christ.Because of his example and teaching,we are similarly challenged to enter intothose situations of difficulty in which ourfel low humans find themselves, and tohelp them as best we can.

Bathford may not appear to represent the‘broken society’ that David Camerontalks about, but there is no doubt thatsome of our neighbours wil l have theirstruggles. There are also obvious needson our doorstep in Bath as well as widerneeds around the world, the images wesee often graphical ly on our TV screens. With increasing Government cutbacksthere wil l no doubt be increasedopportunities to support and serve othersboth in our own community of Bathfordand beyond.

Additional rota organiserrequired. When Paul was out of action I took onthe rota because someone had to do it.Since then the manager or a volunteerhas fi l led in the new week on the boardwith the standard rota using the diary forabsences. Then I ring people to fi l l upthe spaces. I find this a bit taxing attimes and would l ike a helper to do thejob sometimes. I t could be 1 month onand one month off or one month in threeor as agreed. I t is quite an easy jobbecause I have lists of regular and ad-hoc volunteers to use and some noteson when and how they are available.People are extremely pleasant andhelpful as you would expect from all thelovely people who help in the shop. Onedoes not have to be a helper in the shopto do the job.

We also have some extra volunteersnow who would l ike regular slots. I fanyone would l ike to to have a partner orto share their slot please contact me.

“Never in the field of human confl ict hasso much been owed by so many, to sofew” said Sir Winston Churchil l .

“Sweeping squadrons fi l led the summer sky

White trai ls across the bri l l iant blue

We met them head on – five miles high

They were so many, We were so few

We died and never knew

But well or i l l – freedom – we died for you

and left the vivid air signed with our honour

and now – do you remember us

They called the few?

We need to know that we are not alone

That here and now our sacrifice is knownand we are not forgotten”

In Memory ofPolish airmen who flewin the battle by Ken Wright.

73 Squadron Fighter Command

In Memory Of The Few

This year 201 0 is the 70th anniversary ofthe battle which took place in the skiesover our country in the summer of 1 940it was one of the most importantmoments in British history and adecisive turning point in World War I I .The R.A.F was at the time all that keptthe invasion of Britain at bay.

The courage of the pilots must havebeen immense especial ly as some ofthem had a mere 30 hours of instructionbefore they were desperately needed todefend the skies. How did they not onlyconcentrate on what was happeningwithin their own plane, but also in whatwas taking place in front of them asenemy planes approached, and oneither side as they flew in formationtowards what would be for some “certaindeath”?

At the annual memorial service ofthanksgiving in Westminster Abbey theRoll of Honour carried by a servingR.A.F fighter pilot contains the names of1 ,494 pilots and aircrew kil led or mortal lywounded during the battle.

On the unveil ing of the Battle of BritainLondon Monument in 2006 the Prince ofWales said “The pilots were so veryyoung, many even younger than mysons are now, and for me this makestheir sacrifice even more poignant. I dohope that today's generation, andgenerations to come wil l be inspired bythis monument, and above all , wil l beable to reflect on the self-sacrifice ofthese courageous men”

Let us also remember the ground crews, support staff and the many others whotogether won such a seminal victoryagainst overwhelming odds. To those“defenders of the skies” we owe them agreat debt of gratitude for the gift of l ifethat they made possible for us.

Bathford School Hall OpeningCeremony Friday 1 0 SeptemberThe Governing Body of Bathford PrimarySchool is delighted to offer an openinvitation to all those who would like tosee our new hall. The Open Day will takeplace on Friday 1 0 September. Guidedtours by our Year 6 pupils wil l take placethrough the morning every 30 minutes, starting at 9:1 5am. The last tour will be at1 1 :1 5am. The actual ceremony will takeplace at 2.30pm with various dignitariesbeing present. Governors hope that asmany of you as possible will attend. Theonly proviso we would say is please wearappropriate foot wear that will not markour lovely wooden floor.

Governors would like to take thisopportunity to share with the vil lage theirplans for the community use of thismarvellous new facil ity. Indeed, I am surethat many of you will remember theefforts in the past to have a communityfacil ity built on the school site to beshared by both school and vil lage. At last, through lobbying and fund raising, wehave managed, to manoeuvre BathfordSchool into the position whereby theschool replaced classrooms, with theLEA, via central government capitolfunding, building the Hall. The GoverningBody have much to sort out about lettingsand have set up a working party tothoroughly explore the issues. This willtake some time and they do not envisagethat the school wil l be in a position to letthat Hall until well into 201 1 . Our firstpriority is to manage and work thebuilding for our children. So bear with us.We will get there and Bathford will havethe use of a beautiful facil ity managed ina safe and professional way to theadvantage of all.

We hope to see as many of you aspossible on Friday 1 0 September.
