other charities and churches provide theequivalent of the Lord’s Larder. Charitiessuch as the Prince’s Trust report thatpupils are coming to school “dirty andhungry, struggl ing to concentrate”. Inaddition the Trust observed that“chi ldren were not there to learn but tostay warm and be fed.”

When Jesus spoke in Matthew 25, ofhow the nations would be judged heobserved that nations which ensured thewelfare of their people “feeding thehungry, clothing the naked, visiting theprisoner” and so on found favour withGod. They were perceived as fulfi l l ingGod’s vision for a humanity where allcould l ive without fear of oppression, de-humanisation, death.

Churches have been in the forefront offeeding the hungry. When I was chair ofa homeless charity in London, ourdirector used to say that he had notcome to give his l ife to feeding thehungry and sheltering the homeless, butto end the circumstances in which suchprivation was necessary. When Jesussaid, “The poor you wil l always havewith you” this was not a counsel ofdespair, but rather an acknowledgmentthat wherever poverty and hunger arerealities, the Church would be a placewhere they could always find succour. To feed the hungry is good. To campaignfor an end to the circumstances thatlead to hunger is better.

Thank you all for the very generous giftsof food that were given at harvest andhave been given through the year in thecollecting boxes at the shop and church.Bath food bank are very grateful as theyare experiencing a very high demand forfood at this time. Gifts can continue tobe left at both the shop and the church.

From the Bishop of Bath and Wells

‘Are there really Food Banks inSomerset?’ enquired a parishioner at aHarvest Service I conducted recently. Iassured him that there were. I alsoreflected that Food Banks were openingacross the UK at the rate of some threeper week.

Chris Mould, Director of the TrussellTrust that wants to see a Food Bank inevery town, has said, “Hunger is notrelative. Hunger is the same the worldover. A Briton who has not eaten forthree days is no different from an Africanwho has not eaten for three days.” Onerecent article in The Guardian by NickCohen reflected that “Food Banks are tothe Great Stagnation what HungerMarches were to the Great Depression ofthe 1 930s, an unavoidabledemonstration of the negligence of theBritish government for al l with eyes tosee.”

These are strong words. Whether weagree with them or not, what they revealis that in a country with a Christianheritage, whose founder, Jesus, saw thefeeding of the hungry as one of themarks of Christian nationhood, theycause us to think deeply about the stateof our country. There is a perception thatonly those who are so often described as‘benefit scroungers’ are the beneficiariesof the Food Banks.

Not so. Out of every ten peopleaccessing food from such sources, sixare in employment. Many are in part-timeemployment, or working for inadequatewages, and as Oxfam has recorded, there has been a 40 per cent rise in foodprices since 2005.

Further, in order to be a beneficiary ofsupplies from a Food Bank, need has tobe independently verified andauthenticated by various authorities. Inaddition to official Food Banks, many

We are frightfully house and gardenin Bathford BA1

The workers’ vans are always here

The task is never done.

We’re tidying up the hedgerows

We’re clearing every lane

We’re hacking back the blackberries

(That’s verging on insane).

Controlling the environment

We’re lopping back the trees

No matter that our actions are

Dislodging birds and bees.

But...

On the horns of a dilemma

I’m impaled, I must confess.

For though I rant and rave and moan

My own patch is a MESS!
