THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Registration for the Sacrament of Baptism takes place by meeting with a priest. The child’s Birth Certificate is necessary at the time of registration. GODPARENTS MUST PRESENT SPONSOR CERTIFICATES, SIGNED BY THE PASTOR OF THE CHURCH THEY ATTEND, WHICH STATE THAT THEY ARE PRACTICING CATHOLICS. No date for Baptism can be made until the Sponsor Certificates are handed in. Parents, and Godparents, are required to attend one instructional class. PARENTS MUST BE REGISTERED PARISHIONERS OF CHRIST THE KING CHURCH.

THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Preliminary arrangements should be made at least one year prior to the proposed date of marriage. COUPLES MUST BE REGISTERED MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH and speak to a parish priest to enroll in marriage preparatory courses and schedule the use of the Church.

REGULATIONS FOR LENT

These are the regulations for Lent, which the Roman Catholic Church asks all Roman Catholics to follow...

FAST & ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT • ASH WEDNESDAY • GOOD FRIDAY

ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT • ALL FRIDAYS OF LENT

To FAST means that only one full meal a day be taken. 2 smaller meals may be eaten if necessary to maintain strength but both of them combined should not equal another full meal.

A Roman Catholic must observe the Fast from age 18 until the age of 59.

ABSTINENCE forbids the eating of meat. Abstinence begins when a person reaches the age of 14.

There is a serious obligation for Catholics to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Only those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast & abstinence.

Individual conscience should decide whether there is proper cause for excuse. A very serious reason is needed to excuse oneself from Good Friday fast and abstinence.

"Help End Hunger in America" Founded in 1991 by Alan Shawn Feinstein, the Feinstein Foundation is dedicated to the alleviation of hunger, the importance of community service in education and the values of caring, compassion and brotherhood. THE FEINSTEIN CHALLENGE

THE FEINSTEIN CHALLENGE is running through the end of April. Each year this organization distributes one million dollars to charities who help feed the hungry such as SAINT PETER’S FOOD PANTRY. The charities requesting a donation match must collect as much as possible between March 1st and April 30th. (The award amount for each group is determined by the percentage that they collect of the total amount donated to all organizations during the specified challenge time.)

Donations may be in the form of monetary contributions or food items (valued at $1 per pound for this program) and will count toward the challenge if received by April 30th 2013.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of New York and Ireland. Most of what is known about him comes from his two works:

THE CONFESSIO, a spiritual autobiography,

and his

EPISTOLA, a denunciation of the British mistreatment of Irish Christians. Saint Patrick described himself as a "most humble-minded man, pouring forth a continuous paean of thanks to his Maker for having chosen him as the instrument whereby multitudes who had worshipped idols and unclean things had become the people of God."

Saint Patrick is often credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, however, he is believed to have been born in the late 4th century and it was actually Bishop Palladius, who was sent by Pope Celestine in 431 to be the first bishop to the Irish believers in Christ. While not the first to bring Christianity to Ireland, it is Patrick who is said to have encountered the Druids at Tara and then abolished their pagan rites. The story tells that Patrick converted the warrior chiefs and princes, baptizing them and thousands of their subjects in the "Holy Wells" that still bear this name.

The shamrock is associated with Saint Patrick because he used the ever-present clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish pagans. Saint Patrick is well known for driving the snakes from Ireland. It is true there are no snakes in present day Ireland, but there probably never have been as the island was separated from the rest of the continent at the end of the Ice Age. In the old pagan religions, serpent symbols were common and often worshipped in Ireland. "Driving the snakes from Ireland" is a symbolic reference to Saint Patrick bringing an end to that pagan practice.

Today, many Catholic churches around the world are named in honor of Saint Patrick, including the cathedrals in New York and Dublin city. Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with all things Irish: anything green & gold, the

shamrock and good luck. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish emigrated throughout the world, they took their history and celebrations. Most importantly though, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, Saint Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and of offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

It had long been known as sacred ground when Saint Patrick visited the Hill of Slane on the eve of Easter in 433 A.D. He lit a Paschal fire which could be seen from the nearby hill of Tara- Ireland’s royal seat of power. There, a fire burned, celebrating the pagan feast of Beltane. Since it was against the law to light any fire in the area while this was taking place, Laoghaire, the king at that time, was furious and he rode off with his retinue to arrest the rebel. Miraculously- some say by an earthquake, others by holding up a shamrock- Saint Patrick convinced the king of his belief in Christianity and the power of the Holy Trinity. Such a power seemed to be useful to the king who only wished that his soldiers could be as brave as Saint Patrick and his followers. He took the group prisoner and marched them back to the Hill of Tara. The next day, they were spared and were allowed to preach Christianity to the pagan army. Today, at the top of the hill are the ruins of a Franciscan Monastery built there in 1512.
