Upon graduation from Roanoke BibleCollege, Daniel and I had hoped toenter the mission field ourselves.

Things did not work out. Danielpreached in the states for about 3years, but decided that he wascalled to teach. The Lord opened upa door for him which led us to f-lope-

We are active at Tri-City Church of

Christ in Hopewell, V/irginia. Daniel is a deacon and serves as the

treasurer and worship leader. Healso teaches the Bible Bowl class on

Sunday morning. I have taught the ,young teens for several years, butnow I am serving as a substituteteacher. This past Christmas, Iserved as a co-director o-F our chil^

dren's Christmas program. I also amthe chair o-f the committee in chargeof our 25th anniversary at thechurch which we will be celebratingon July 25, 1993. Our son, Dwight, ^served one year as a deacon, but dueto his work schedule decided not to

serve again -For 1993. He attendschurch and does what he can when his

work schedule allows it.

As you can see, Daniel and I arevery busy, but we are never too busyto do the Lord's work. We look

Henki's mother is back in Belgiuma-Fter her visit to the states. She

visited -Family members in Georgiaand was able to spend time with JohnMark at Lincoln Christian College.She brough back a cassette -From Johnriark on which he describes some of

his experiences at college. God hasbeen blessing him, but it has notbeen easy! He needs prayers andencouragement.

The young people continue to havemusic practice in the "attic" above

the church. There are 2 learning toplay drums and 2 to 3 learningguitar. Usually they practice onMondays. Most of these kids are notChristians. Since John Mark left,the Bible study portion of thispractice, session fizzled out. Recently, they decided to renew thestudy on Wednesdays. Pray thatthese young people will be influenced through the studv of God'sWord.

Dennis and Linda Messimer, missionaries in ^Duth Africa, stopped by-For a visit on their way home fromthe states. The Genk church hosted

a big pot luck dinner and gatheringso Christians from various area

They visited with us and variousfriends from December 10 to December

16, 1992. They left for South Africa on December 18, 1993. Denniswill be teaching at Moberly BibleCollege.

During Christmas, we exchanged giftswith the family. It was the firsttime they (the Boonaerts' family)had ever done anything like that.Everyone received one gift. Eachperson brought in something -For ourChristmas meal which made it real

nice, but inexpensive.

The joint program for "the secondday o-f Christmas" was at the Rekembuilding. The program began at 2:30p.m. since it was to be such a longprogram. The program included apuppet show, magician, "-family por-*trait" skit by one family, instrumental specials, short dramas, eto.The program ended at 7:30 p.m.Several non-Christians, who werepresent, seemed to be quite impressed with "all that's done forthe children," since their Catholicexperiences had not prepared themfor anything like it. The light ofChrist is shining in various waysand the Christians also are encour

aged and motivated in their not-so-easy life where "we are" in theminority.

Henki is continuing to work with thedrug addicts in the area. He hasbeen able to encourage several toseek treatment. Henki visited

Piedro's wife the other day, asPiedrb can have only 1 visitor at atime and must wait for his turn. He

We heard a young man recently at the Evangelical church inHasselt give his testimony concerning his former drug addiction andhow God patiently, step-by-stepfinally won him. He now works withTeen Challenge (the group that resulted from David Wilkerson's work

in New York) to help others findChrist. Pray that God will worksuch a miracle in the life of

Another concern, is the lack ofspiritually oriented programs onT.V. and radio. These types ofprograms are not allowed in Belgium,but one inter-denominational group.Evangelisch Omroep (E.G.), broadcasts from Holland in Dutch. Theydo a good job of providing manystudies and programs twice a week(since viewing has grown). Chris-

grams, but may have to sift throughthe information to get the good fromthem. Paul said in I Thessalonians

5:21 to "Test everything and holdonto what is good."

My friend, Miss Vanpoecke, the ex-principal of the School-with-the-Bible, has offered to help head up agroup of "correspondents" as theyare called in the province ofLimburg, to try and get more Christians involved in watching the E.G.programs. The E.G. also have theirown T.V. guide and various videos,books, and etc. to help nurtureChristians. Miss Vanpoecke askedfor my (Mary Esther) assistance inthis project. We had a planning,information meeting in her home inthe fall. Folks are enthusiastic

and suggested several ways to helpunite efforts and Christian witness

Henki, Mary Esther and James are to beiin the States this summer. We areall anxious to see John Mark again after more than a year of seperation. Itis our hope to be able to visit several} of our supporters and see many ofour American brothers and sisters in Christ. The highlight of this tripwill be the celebration of Dad and Mom Roland's 50th wedding anniversarywith a family reunion in St. Louis, Mo/ Because of work scheduels andvarious circumstances we won't all be t[ogether in the States at the sametime. THE LETTER

DID YOU KNOW WE ALL have a ministryof reconciliation to perform as part of Christ'sbody? Sure you did, but probably like wesometimes "discovered" old truths once agam,you too have seen new light and beauty inpassages often read before in Scripture.While getting ready for a Billy Graham campaign, 'Soontuns 9ajnilypart of the international ministry of MissionWorld held this spring in Europe, a particular 75text emphasizing this truth look on new meaningand life. That passage is found in the letterof Paul called II Corinthians 5:11-21:

If we can understand what Paul is saying in vs. 20, it would seem this reconciliation isn't justbetween God and those outside Christ, but also His children, "the church of God," and all the

Saints (II Cor. 1:Ib) arc implored upon to be reconciled to God. Is this not an awesome taskand privilege that we must be continually engaged in and encouraging one another not to growtired of fulfilling? We hope God has given you strength and wisdom to this end in your partof the world these first months of 1993 and thank you for your continued and ever soimportant part in helping us fulfill this in the country of Belgium thus far. God bless you asyou remain faithful...in the ministry of reconciliation in the states...and with us inBelgium...towards the world and towards Christians.

IN HENKI'S EFFORTS OF REACHING drug addicts and helping them understand God'splan of reconciliation there has been advancement and he has been involved in various ways.

He has gotten a telephone (number 089 305703) in his basement workshop/office and adoorbell hooked up so he is more accessible! It has made family communication better aswell as making him more accessible for those needing him for "talk therapy" and otherservices he is able to offer addicts and other friends and contacts.

He has been able to convince three diflerent addicts to be admitted in the hospital to get offdrugs. ONE left before the cure was ended, but has since decided to try and go straight athome, claiming to be off two weeks. Henki says she mdeed looks belter, so join us in prayingthat she may be successful. The SECOND succeeded so well he was discharged early andHenki continues to encourage him to stay clean. This is the "Piedro" that was mentioned inthe Jan-Feb report that we discovered is PIETRO from his letter. After 43 days he wrotesaying he was very thankful to God that his condition was improving and getting better everyday. He said he hopes that 1993 will change liis life for the rest of his life and that he wantsto fight to the bitter end until drugs and alcohol are totally eliminated from his life. Isn't thatgreat news~and something we can be specifically praying will be granted him and hisfamily?!? Henki was able to take him one night to hear Billy Graham (via satellite fromEssen, Gennany) so now the follow-up must be effective. The THIRD was in and out of thehospital two or three limes and was sure God had worked a miracle that she had beenaccepted back so quickly after leaving. Unfortunately, she is now out again, but is trying tostay clean in the home of a friend. We can't give up too soon on these folks, always liftingthem before the throne of mercy and encouraging, motivating, loving them towards victoryin Jesus.

Henki has been able to rent a garage close to his office where he has sleeping facilities fordire cases. Especially during the winter montlis it is awful to realize that some of these folkssleep outside without any shelter with freezing temperatures and rainy nights. Henki knowsthe danger of temptation where valuable items are available so has this sparsely furnishedfacility that can be used in emergencies in order not to bring them into our home. Helptowards this expense and the additional phone would be most appreciated if God lays it onyour heart to give.

He has gotten addresses and made more new contacts, visiting and gathering with differentaddicts than he had met in the shopping centers. They each have their own personal needsand problems and Henki tries to teach them, encouraging them with love, practical advice,and spiritually sound direction.

He has received a book from the Teen Challenge International that is beginning a ministry inthe province of Limburg, Belgium. He is reading the book trying to get new insights andinformation on how best to reach these folks and understand their situation better. Since it

is a new ministry in Belgium (off-shoot of work established in the Netherlands) it still needsto be built up. Thus far it is mainly a preventative ministry trying to reach schools andinstitutions with teenagers to warn of the dangers of drug addiction. It is hoped eventuallyto develop a cure center, D.V. It is certainly something we are seeing is needed more andmore in this part of Belgium at least, so hope you make it a matter of earnest prayer—or sendsomeone who would be capable!!!

He is also discovering that it is not just te<;nagers and young people who are involved inaddiction. Many arc in their thirties and above, "just on drugs" 5-6 years. This lifestylecauses the family such desperation what with all the bills, expenses and the embarrassmentof having children sit out prison sentences that suicide is often considered the only way out.These folks have insecure lives since they can't keep a job, often going bankrupt, losinghome, car, and other possessions because of high expenses. They lose friends almost as fastas they gain them bccause of their deceitfulness, lies, and other distasteful actions. Theydevelop ways of collecting money; for example begging from friends by asking for enoughmoney for a cup of coffee, and saving it until they have enough for a fix! Almost all of themhave had tragic and painful childhoods that have contributed heavily to their addiction. Theyarc indeed a group of people who need true love and compassion that only can be given byGod and those empowered with His love. It is as though God is making the appeal throughus that you open your heats to us and this ministry of reconciliation that we may see some ofthese become new creations in Christ so the old will be gone and the new will come.

THERE ARE A COUPLE OTHER LETTERS we would like to share with you at this time.We finally had news from Robert, one of the refugees of Ghana that had lived with us whilewe were in Opglabeck. He has been able to get papers to live and work in Italy. Noteverything is an ideal situation, but he is praising God for His care and providence and hopesto save up and visit us sometime.

As most of you know, our oldest son, John Mark is attending Bible College in the states. Hehad been able to visit several of our supporting congregations last summer before classcsbegan with a slide report of the work here. He also has had the opportunity to share thatreport with the student body of Lincoln Christian College. He put some of his newly learnedlessons from speech class to use and challenged them to write letters of encouragement to us.What a joy it was to receive just such a letter. We don't know how to emphasize theimportance of not only having sufficient financial support, but faithful prayer warriors andencouragers who stand behind us in the often discouraging, lonesome, and hard work whichmakes many demands on us physically, spiritually, and mentally. We appreciate John Markand Stacy's effort. We also want to take this opportunity to thank each one who rememberedus with Christmas greetings and birthday cards, and other encouragement.

Last, but not least, was a letter from William and Jean Roland (Mary Esther's folks in thestates on furlough from India). They reminded us of their coming 50th wedding anniversarythis summer. Though we have none of the details yet, we plan on being in the states forseveral weeks, to take in this celebration and visit some of our supporters. Please bepreparing for this and help us arrange a visit with you if at all possible. We are anxious tosee as many as possible face-to-face.

Besides the many hours Henki spends reaching out into the world of darkness among drugaddicts, the Boonaerts' family found themselves occupied in many other activities. With thefollowing pictures we will give a summary of what happened in Belgium for Christ in 1992.

SEPARATION FROM JOHN MARK AND CHARITABLE EFFORTS: Having John Markgo to the states in May meant preparation, separation, and upkeep of his place. He left hisDaihatsu Charade so James and Mary Esther have transportation. This has been a doubleblessing since Henki's car was stolen in December. James checked the oil before a trip toEindhoven, Holland to bring a load of clothing and supplies. Different church joined togetherto help Christians in need in former East block lands and Genk Christians were part of theefforts.

YOUTH WORK: Some of the teenagers in the Genk building at the all church potluck dinnerheld during the November 1992 Youth Weekend. There are several non-Christian youth sothese continue to be good opportunity to witness and train youth. We also try to have aninfluence on those involved in the small music ^roup that meets at the church.

COMPUTER EDUCATION: Learning to use the recently purchased second-hand computerin our Genk home. Since James has had classes at school, he's able to instruct the "greenies"and figure out how to use the printer, and etc. Mary Esther has been so busy at the Schoolwith the Bible so hasn't yet started using it regularly, but we expect that to change soon.

FELLOWSHIP WITH AMERICAN CHRISTIANS: Visiting in Ma Boonaerts Uving roomwith Marty and Jay of the Maryvale ChristianChurch (Arizona). It was an unusualexperiencefor us ail around and we were sorry it had to end so quickly. It's always a blessing to haveAmerican Christians visit us. The Vermeulens of Iowa were among our other visitors.

THANKSGIVING was spent with English speaking American and Canadian missionaries ofBelgium and Holland. One family had recently adopted (the baby pictured) and folks enjoyedseeing his pictures. Two families will be leaving the European ranks the summer of 1993 sothe need for spiritual harvesters continues to grow in this continent.

WELCOMING EX-CO LABORERS: A large group of friends and Christians welcomed theDennis and Linda Mcssimer family from South Africa with us in December. They had spentmany years in Belgium as missionaries before having to leave for Johannesburgfor health reasons. They were on their way to the states for their "first furlough."

DENNIS MESSIMER had the

special joy of ending theyear and crowning his visitin Belgium by immersing LuudStevens in the Genk church.

His wife Elly had been ledto Christ by Boonaerts'converts while they were onfurlough in 1980. Messimer'shad stayed involved with Luudand Elly's family, but he hadnever made a decision to follow

Christ. God continued to work

on his heart during the Messimer'sabsence. This caused a time of

rejoicing for all present at the"reception" for the Messimer'swhile they were in the provinceof Limburg. What a way to bringthe year to a close!

James and his girl friend, Sylvie,at the O'Hare Airport in Chicago whohad flown in from Brussels on June

28th. They had a -Fiew hours to waiton Mary Esther whose Royal Jordanianflight from Amsterdam was about anhour late. They had the most unusual coincidence of meeting John andMarie Castelein at the airport.They were leaving -For a visit toGenk, Belgium to visit his mother.(John's parents, Don and JulienneCastelein had helped start the GenkChurch of Christ in the 50's). John

encouragement to see so many Christians together in one place, hearing praises to the Almighty andsharing with flood relief e-Fforts.James and Sylvie did their part bysandbagging! Ule rejoice to reportthat we weren't hindered by thiscatastrophe in our miles of traveling.

Then it was off to Kansas -For

some days of sightseeing, repackingthings to be stored in the U.S., andcelebrating Mom and Dad Roland's50th wedding anniversary ON theactual day. iAJe borrowed a carfrom the Rolands

and traveled to

the St. Louis ^and Pittsfield, Illinois^^®^^^^^^ ^area to spend ti.Te vjith

friends there.

A friend of John Mark's came

to visit him from Belgium so most ofthe next week the 4 young people(John Mark, his friend, James andSylvie) spent as much time togetheras they could—between John Mark'swork hours at Pizza Hut. Then John

Mark got James and Sylvie off safelyfor their return flight to Belgiumon August 29th.

Mary Esther traveled alone t:oStewardson, Illinois; Burnettsvilleand Medaryville, Indiana to presentreports to the churches there. Itwas a special time with ex-forward-

ing agent, Louelia, in her new hcxne-r-again sorting and repacking items ;-For storage.

The month Henki and Mary Esther spent together went by -Fast.Ulill Delvaax, graduate oF L.C.C. andlong time -Friend, drove Mary Estherto pick up Henki at the O'Hare Airport on August 5th. We celebratedHenki's -First time in the U.S. a-Fter

13 years with a delicious meal inBloomington, Illinois. lAie talkedabout -Future plans -For the work inBelgium among addicts as Uiill hopesone day to be a missionary in Belgium. It seems God has been workingtowards Will's goal of a ministryamong the Belgium addicts since wehave already begun this work. Willhas his Masters in Counseling alcohol and drug addicts!! We are looking -Forward to Will joining us andmaybe other recruits a-Fter servingalone in Belgium 23 years. What aBlessing!

Travel in Wisconsin providedan extended visit with Larry andBarbara Falish, as well as withsupporters of the Mountain, Hickory,and Black River Falls areas. We

also enjoyed getting acquainted witha mission among Hmong refugees. Arushed trip to Iowa to be with theVermeulen family (who hav^b^rf inour home in Belgium often) and shar-fing with their congregation wasenjoyed enroute to Pittsfield, Illinois and St. Louis for the familyreunion. (Henki and Mary Estherboth caught some bug that kept themfrom getting there sooner, but werewell soon).

dren were present; Mary Esther fromBelgium; Charles from Baltimore,Maryland; David from Beason, Illinois; and Paul from Argentina. OnlyHenki was present of the spouses and2 grandchildren; our John Mark andPaul's Jonathan Paul. Dan Clymer(from LCC) lead Mom and Dad in the

renewing of their wedding vows andpresented devotions. The ladies ofthe Ferguson church prepared a lovely reception -For the guests. Thespacious facilities of the C.W.B.A.Hospitality House were per-Fect forour 2 days together and we weresorry to have to say good-bye sosoon.

One congregation in St. Louisand the Bellville Church in Illinois

gave us the opportunity to shareonce more our vision -For work, amongaddicts. The trip from Bellville toWabash, Indiana proved to be morethan we anticipated, and we werelate -For the meeting with the mission committee. (Distances are so

much farther and speeds slower herein the U.S. compared to what we areused to in Belgium) They graciouslywaited and we had a good time sharing with them and renewing visions•For partnerships, -Fortunately.

Then we met Will Delvaux to

gather some more mat^ials and in--Fbrmation -For rehabilitating addicts. A tour in Wisconsin and

interview with -Folks of Libertas

confirmed many of our findings andgave us more ideas to add to what wegleaned at Carle Pavilion in Champaign, Illinois. Now we have somematerials to sort through and hopeto become better informed and

equipped to handle this new task andministry.

After Henki's return to Bel

gium on August 25, God provided MaryEsther with more surprised visitswith friends of long ago, and fruit-ful speaking engagements. One of thebest examples of God's care was when

Jerry Meuilers and BillGullick arranged tomeet in lAiest Virginiato avoid an 18 hour

bus trip to HopeMell,Virginia. Meeting ournew -Forwarding agents, Dan and LindaCoake personally, is now history, aswe -feel like old -Friends!

With God's provision as thestandard, sa-fe travel back to Belgium on September 25th is anticipated -For Mary Esther -Following a visitwith the Bethany congregation inBumpass, Virginia, and her brother,Chuck and -Family in Maryland.

There is, of course, the danger of leaving out really importantpeople and visits trying to give arundown in this way. Uie want to tryand show you we have had a busy, yetblessed summer and that we are grateful to EVERYONE who had a part inmaking it successful. Ule know Godwas there watching every moment inanswer to our hope that He wouldprovide what He had in mind -for us.We think His provision has beengreat, so thank Him and YOU who hada part in it, mentioned or not. Godknows every detail and now we allshare precious memories.

DRUG MINISTRY UPDATE

Before January 1993, Henkiencouraged 2 addicts to enter clinics -for rehabilitation. Then -From

January to June he was able to encourage and bring about 6 more addicts in -for treatment. In our

travels in the States this summer,we discovered that this ministry ofHenki's has a title and people arehired to do what he is doing. Ithad even been an observation of one

social worker in Belgium that Henkiwas not a "missionary", so thereforehe shouldn't go out to the streetsconvincing addicts to be admitted-for detoxication.

As Henki becomes more known in

Genk and learns the ropes of thisministry, he must become more efficient. In July just before his tripto the States, he worked to get 13different addicts into 3 different

centers. God is blessing him as an"INTERVENTION SPECIALIST" and we

praise Him -for this opportunity toserve Him in this new area.

Most of these figures, meanhours of "talk therapy"; often goingto the clinic -for initial interviews

before the addicts are admitted;phone calls to make and confirmreservations; getting entrance papers ready; as well as deliveringthe addicts

to the cen

courage themthrough thisvery hard and painful withdrawalprocess.

We are learning lots of newterms of the trade, but are having ahard time getting to know the Eng-1 ish equivalent so hope you wi 11bear with us. Above all, we request:your prayers -Tur every aspect ofthis ministry as well as your financial support.

Though John Mark will be inthe States continuing his studies atLincoln, he will not be able to

HENKI HAD SEVERAL SURPRISES Tor Mary Esther ^^ when she returned to Belgium after her 3 month 'Qj "furlnugh" the end of September. First off, he was .^ waiting to meet her at the Schipol, Netherlands airport!

(Unfortunately, the Volvo was giving trouble. He tiad already^ spent almost ^500.00 on repairs from a fund provided by TreatytH Jammers in Indiana designated'for car expenses. We were able

to get the equivalent of AAA do some temporary work on theclutdi cable so we could drive home without mishap. We continue to have transportation dilemas, so need wisdom andpatience etc. to get it all solved and paid.)

What was waiting in the kitchen was the bigger surprise.Henki had spent the better part of September working on changes

^ and finishing the kitchen he had installed when we moved toGenk 3 years ago. He had gotten permanent counter tops in placeand secured. Best of all he had doors installed on all of the

(j) cupboards, whereas when leaving in June there were only 7 onthe then 16 necessary. AND he had been able to add two drawers—such a blessing in a kitchen! Every time she uses thekitchen what a luxury to see everything so tidy and dirt-free.

Rut that wasn't all as Henki had also been able to do^ needed work on the shower. It now has tilled floor and water-

resistant paint on the walls so is more hygienic to use andkeep clean. The water heater is also working better after hegave it a thorough cleaning and did some tune-up work on it.

BECAUSE OF PREPARING THESE SURPRISES and keeping James^ cared for during his first month of school, much less work was

done with the addicts. Henki was relieved to get back to thisvery important work once Mary Esther resumed her homekeepingduites. During October he has been able to get about 5 addicts to detox centers and is preparing several others. Anoverdose with one of the young ladies Henki has worked espec-

^ ially long with caused extra tension and effort this month. Weo) don't suspect a suicide attempt as a 73% pure drug had been

administered whereas junkies are accustomed to 1G% purityfrom Maastricht dealers. We know of at least two young people

to who have died as a result.

But God has been able to use the untimely death of 27year old Els (whom those of you who saw the slide report may

^ remember as Pino's girl friend—in pink housecoat, dark leather jacket, etc.) It has come as a shock and brought much sad-nes to the many addicts that knew and loved Els. Pray withus that as Henki ministers to them under these conditions he

and how he felt bad taking drugs from another junkie. Henkiquestioned Roberto why he felt bad about it. He explained hisreasoning that somelKidy had put that understanding nf good andevil In his heart causing remorse. (See Rom. 2:1-16) Henki

^went on to say he was convinced that there are things in thisworld that are good and bad and that God puts something in nan

y^to feel and understand the difference.This got Roberto to thinking and later one evening Henki

challenged him to try God. "Why don't you try to talk with•nGod, like we've been talking together so many tim?s? You've

been telling me your problems, so why don't you ttds eveningwhen you lay your head down, talk to God and ask Him if He will

^help you—give you the power tn overcome this drug addiction?"Henki explained farther.

^ The next day wtien Roberto saw Henki he said he'd talkedwith God as Henki'd told him to do. He said, "1 asked Himthat He would wake me on time so I wouldn't mess up this ap-

lERE IS A SPECIAL LETTER Henki always carries/around with him. This official letter was provided by

a "Rijkswachter," one form of the security forces inBelgium. When Roger found out about Henki's interventionwork among addicts, he realized Henki could be endangeredwith addicts in his car. If he were stopped he could beimprisoned and his car confiscated if drugs of any form werefound in his car or on the addicts he brought to the center. The letter outlines Henki's work of transporting addicts to detox centers and that he has made his activitiesknown to city authorities.One time while driving with a replacement car while ourswas being repaired last month, the police upon seeing thisletter said, "0, you're the man of the Charade," and letHenki go with no further delay. That was three statesaway. How the letter was useful some dayslater is truly a

^working of God's hand.HENKI AND A YOUNG MAN who'd been with Els the night of heroverdose, went to visit Pino in jail. Henki not being achaplin, nor having other necessary papers to visit convicts wondered how he would be able to visit Pino. Uponarriving he showed the letter and immediately he wasushered in along with the accompanying addict. Orderswere given to provide a place for Henki "not behind glass"but in the chapel. The three were able, unhindered orwith police accompanyment, to talk for almost two hours.This was a great source of encouragement to Pino and Henkiexcitedly told of the experience, showing praise for God'sopen doors.Pinois now out of jail and has gone with Henki to Els' lastresting place. Many of the addicts asked Henki about attending Els funeral. Her parents choose however only tohave a private one with the family and her remains cremated.Henki continues to have contact with them and they arefeeling guilt for some of their actions. We surely prayGod's word planted and watered in their hearts may bringforth fruits as well.This has also been an opportunity to continue teachingPino Scriptural truths. He is sure "this isn't the end"with Els and Henki is able to build upon other truthspreviously taught Pino. While he was still in jail anotherinmate to whom Henki had given the equivalent of "Good News

for Modern Man" in Dutch, begun reading. He shared the exciting things he found therein with Pino and other addictsof Genk. You see what a chain reaction is in porcess asHenki reaches one then another with the gospel.

PINO WAS PROUD TO SHOW Henki that he's not begun usingdrugs since being out of jail. Henki also reports Pinolooks so strong and healthy compared to about this timelast year when he first began working intensly with Pinoand Els. Pray with us that he and others may truly become the picture of health described in I Thess. 5:23"May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you throughand through. May your whole spirit, soul and body bekept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.The one mho calls you is faithful and he will do it."

like to give a siJmmary of thepast year's happenings, including some \ ^ ^updates where appropriate. We began the ^7 ^year with DANIEL AND LINDA COKE taking _ _ (Tover the fowarding agent's work with the ,Hopewell church in Virginia as base. ; ^They have been initiated sufficiently and 'seem to be getting the hang of the work „ ^ * -,rjust fine. Though they are a busy couple!and both work, between them they aredoing a great job. It was good to get to DECEMBER 1993meet together the end of our furlough NEWS REPORT(Mary Esther with Dan and Linda along •with the preacher of the Hopewell church and his wife, Bill and EtnSBR-r/'.Gulick, former missionaries to India.) We appreciate the insignts and encouragement provided and the attitude of the congregation in backing usin our ventures in Belgium for Christ. From a visit with Louella, sheseems to be adjusting and keeping plenty busy during her first year freefrom the fowarding agent's responsibalities and pressures. We praise Godfor her life as she continues active in His service.

THE GENK CHURCH OF CHRIST

Some news of the Genk church of Christ where we attend mostly is also inorder. The YOUNG PEOPLE CONTINUE THEIR MUSIC PRACTICE in the atticspace above the worship hall. The congregation has decided to helptowards some more renovations since they see the youth are serious aboutcontinuing to use the area. (The young poeple have done lots of insulating as well as practicing!) Now the church plans to provide heat byhooking some radiators onto the central heating. They also hope to replace a ladder with stairs for access to the room. This should be a boostto our teenagers.WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDIES from the Navigator series have been pretty wellattended for the most part. Occasionally with sickness or during busysummer months, they were postponed. Otherwise good discussions and newinsights are being learned from God's word. Plans are to learn new songsas soon as the musician can learn some of the "Praise" songs that havebeen translated into Dutch to teach the Christians. This should be a goodexperience for all involved.DEATH IS ALWAYS A PART OF LIFE and the congregation had it's share thisyear. Shortly before our furlough two folks of the church left this life.One had been very faithful until death. We greatly miss the quiet, gentlespirit of Finneke. The other, Pol Wijman had been instrumental in Finnekebeing won to Christ. Henki has been able to make contact with some of his^n-Christian family via his drug addict work.Then there were 3 deaths the beginning of October that affected the Genkcongregation. Josien's mother (Henki's youngest brother's wife) diedafter a long struggle with cancer at the age of 55. Then, without beinginformed of her deteriation or death, Clothil was- also buried. She hadbeen taken to her hometown area by her children about a year ago and putin a nursing home. Ladies of the church had visited her in the course ofthe year and could tell she wasn't happy. Her non-believing childreninformed the congregation of nothing, so Clothil left this life in lonli-ness and dejection. The way of the world is sometimes hard and selfish.

The third death was the stabbing of a young man at a birthday party. Hewas to have married into the family of one of the Genk elders. This starkereality of the criminal world also left the congregation a bit more protective of their youth, and the young people maybe a bit more sober todanger.

^ THE JOINT CHRISTMAS PROGRAM is to be in the Genk building thisyear so plans are being made for this time of fellowship andsharing. Several congregations are to be invited so it will

^ We've already had a very early blanket of snow so are^ wondering if we may have a "real Christmas" this year.

summer in Belgium left much to be desired as there was-Vn -w 2 0^ rain and cold weather, and the fall wasn't much better.

NATIONAL SCENE

The Billy Graham campaign this spring resulted in many accepting•Christ and the fellowship among the churches being strengthened

with those who participated. Follow up work continues andreports of even more who are affected as a result of continued

evangelistic work are encouraging.^ The emphesis put on the Evangelical broadcasting (E.O.) from the Nether-

r".via radio and T.V. is bringing results of strengthened ChristiansIsouls won for His kingdom. Belgian Christians in Dutch speaking

parts of Belgium are enthusiastically planning to get even more involved,*"•' including some young people on fire for the Lord.

A small inter-church group decided to stand behind Henki in his effortswhen they heard of and saw his work among the addicts. They hope to beinvolved themselves and enlist others with prayers, finances and otherhelp and suppport (used bedding, clothing, etc.). All these united efforts to spread and strengthen His kingdom in the small but strategicland of Belgium are intended to bring ultimate glory to God, and we trustHim who began a good work to bring it to completion!

FURLOUGH TRIPWe were certainly blessed with our "furlough trip" to the States, thissummer. Though we wern't all able to be together the whole time it wasa success. We are still being able to enjoy it through the cassettes andreading materials gathered along the way. Recordings of some of thesessions at the NACC; copies of materials from the Media center at LincolnChristian College, and books from various Bible book stores and friendsprovide this "after-glow." Many happy memories, several pictures, giftsand some correspondance remind us of time shared among American Christians.Thanks to everyone who had a part in any way.Our Roland family reunion and celebration of the 50th and 25th weddinganniversaries of William and Jean Roland and Henki and Mary Esther res-

-- pectively was of course the high light. The- folks had prepared-materialswith family tree info, from both Roland and Rothermel sides for eachfamily. We enjoyed sharing childhood memories with several slides,talking and Indian food. Janette Oke (cited in a Day Brightner productprepared by Focus on the Family) said something that seems to expressit so well: Our family is a unit that is not shared by everyone. It'sours by design, by tradition, by growth. We love and protect it in ourown special way. Aren't these some things to remember and rejoice aboutwhen family--both our physical and Christian family is seperated by1/2 the globe?

DRUG MINISTRYDuring 1993 Henki's work among drug addicts has increased and taken onmore specific shape. He has been able to motivate about 30 addicts tobe admitted for treatment. Many of these have been in more than once,some on their own initiative but most of them Henki has worked hours withand brought personally to detox centers.In October he had been able to rent a garage for those without a placeto sleep who were seriously working on entrance. In fact he had slowlybuilt it up to the place he was bedding down 7 addicts each night afterfeeding them their one sparce meal that day. Several were on

waiting lists to be admitted for treatment and Henki was glad to be involved in this work after the break this summer.Then from the most unexpected corner, trouble arose. We'd always expecteddanger from the pushers and dealers seeing their customers being removed. Instead the police began agitation! After a conference with apolice at the station, Henki thought the matter was solved. The next dayall the mattresses and bedding were confiscated and the addicts informedthey could no longer sleep in that garage.Henki is now awaiting a meeting with the chief of police, the mayor, asocial worker and a welfare man. We know the last two are sympatheticand quite impressed with what Henki has been able to do "single-handed"and without the use of methodon-substitute drugs. We know our God andprayers on Henki's behalf have provided the strength and protection andsuccess Henki has received until now. We trust it will continue to thefurther amazement of the officials and glory of God so request you topray without ceasing.With the situation as it is, along with still being without transportationHenki's work among the addicts has reduced to talking with them and encouraging them as best he can. Sometimes it seems pretty discouraging andunfair so we have to wait on the Lord to work out all things for good inHis own time, for we know He is in control!
