Dear friends, We welcome our speaker from Caritas Australia, who will talk to us this weekend during the homily time about the work of Project Compassion, and how our contribution to their work is making a real difference to alleviating poverty and disease in our world. I also wanted to share with you some thoughts on the gospel of John this weekend, where Jesus engages the Samaritan woman at the well in a long conversation about living water, which ultimately leads to her faith In Jesus. The gospel is about offering the promise of eternal life, in this gospel passage called ‘living water,’ to those who feel burdened by sin. There are many layers of meaning in this gospel which hinge upon our understanding of the relationship between Jews and Samaritans, religious and cultural practices which form the basis for this conversation between Jesus and the woman. The Samaritan woman goes to the well in the middle of the day, because she is a sinner in the town, and no-one wants to associate with her. Normally the women of the village would go in the cool of the evening to the well and discuss the talk of the village. But this woman has had five husbands, now living with a sixth man who is not her husband, as Jesus points out to her. Jesus, is the seventh man in her life, and in Jewish tradition seven is the perfect number. Likewise, the are in John’s gospel seven ‘signs’ or miracles as they are called in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The water jug she carries is a reminder of the burden of sin she carries around with her. Jesus, knowing everything about her doesn’t judge the woman, but rather accepts her as a person, and invites here to drink of the water of life, which is Jesus himself. It is this woman the sinner, who then calls the others in the village to believe in Jesus as the Messiah. Like the woman in the gospel Jesus wants us to be free of our burden of sin and shame, whatever may be weighing us down. He accepts our frailty and invites us to drink of him the water of life so we will never be thirsty again. Lent is our time of prayer and drawing closer to God. It is about engaging in deep conversation with his healing love, and merciful forgiveness. Let us open our hearts and minds to receive his gift of living water, so that we will never be thirsty again. SCHOOL ENROLMENTS I would invite all those parents wishing to apply for Primary and Secondary Catholic Schools to forward the Parish Priest Reference form to the parish office, and I will send the forms when completed directly to the school for which you have applied.
