bletchingley golf club

Bletchingley is a family-owned golf club that first opened for play in September 1993.The course is surrounded by beautiful undulating countryside,

with many mature trees and panoramic views overlooking the North Downs and Weald. It is built on sand, which means we remain open when many other golf courses are closed due to wet weather. At 6,513 yards the course offers a varied and challenging par of 72.

We have a pleasant and friendly Clubhouse providing excellent facilities for our members and guests. Our restaurant serves splendid food, and our large function room can seat up to 120 covers.

The Professional Shop is always well stocked with equipment and clothing at competitive prices, and we provide an excellent teaching service, including a state of the art video/computer digital facility, for all abilities.

There are thriving Men’s, Ladies’, Business Ladies’, Seniors’ and Juniors’ Sections, with many organised golfing competitions and social events.

Visitors and golf societies are also invited to avail themselves of our famous Bletchingley hospitality and play our excellent course. We look forward to welcoming you here in the very near future.

The Course

bletchingley golf club

We boast a beautiful and mature golf course offering a fine challenge to golfers at all levels. Panoramic views, overlooking the North Downs and Weald, create a perfect

backdrop for a layout which has made best use of the interesting and undulating topography.

A variety of mixed and mature trees, including many fine oaks, provide essential course definition and a mature stream creates several interesting water features ensuring that every hole provides a very different challenge. Constructed on rich sandy loam, the course is playable all year round.

Our Course Manager, Paul Howard, and his staff work tirelessly to present a first-class golf course throughout the year. The owner, Granville Wise, continues to invest large amounts of money on the course and we have been undertaking a major bunker programme that will take in 25 bunkers per year in order to improve the look and the playability of our golf course for all to enjoy.

The course has a par of 72 and measures 6,513 yards from the white medal tees. The front nine, with three par-5s, is by far the longer of the two, extending to 3,447 yards. There are three par-3s on the inward nine, which offers its own challenges, not least of which are several water features which must be carefully negotiated.

If you have never played Bletchingley before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie

in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Steven Cookson, our Golf Manager and Head Professional.

Hole 1, 429 yards, par 4A generous fairway welcomes your first shot of the day, keep your drive up on the right side of the fairway and let it feed down into the centre. Your second shot, although with a mid iron, is a visually deceptive one, it appears shorter than it actually plays. It takes a brave player to land the ball on the back shelf of the green. Even when you are on the green it is not a guaranteed two putt.

Hole 2, 173 yards, par 3An excellent par 3 easing you into your round nicely requiring a tee shot to a green surrounded by bunkers although the green is a generous width. Favour the short side of the green as trouble lurks long.

Hole 3, 472 yards, par 5This short par 5 hole provides you with an opportunity to get one back on the course. However, accuracy is at a premium with a fairway bunker to the right. Out of bounds runs up the left side of the hole and trees will catch you out on the right. Once on the fairway you will be able to lay up to your perfect wedge distance or for the longer hitters an opportunity to go for the green in two.

Hole 4, 377 yards, par 4A long straight drive up the right side of the fairway will leave you in perfect position to attack this small green. Be aware, though, that anything short will be eaten up by the greenside bunker and par from there would be a good score.

Hole 5, 427 yards, par 4Hopefully you are now prepared to tackle the tricky 5th tee shot! A classic risk/reward shot, and one, which if taken on, must be committed to. The longer hitter, if they so choose, can aim across the trees leaving a short pitch into the green, but for the player who has to take the longer route a carefully placed tee shot is required to avoid the trees on the left and the out of bounds on the right. This leaves a second shot of around 200 yards, which has to be threaded between the trees.

Hole 6, 467 yards, par 5Requires an accurate tee shot up the left side which will bounce round to the right. The bigger hitters must be aware of the fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway, and if found will prevent you from hitting this reachable par 5 in two. The second shot must be aimed up the left side as anything right will leave you in heavy rough. The green is guarded by numerous bunkers.

Hole 7, 239 yards, par 3This picturesque par 3 looks out over the Surrey hills but don’t let that take your mind away from your game, as this is a very long and difficult hole that requires a solidly-struck long iron or wood where accuracy is vital if you are to find the putting surface. Too long, however, is where the trouble lies, with out of bounds lurking!

Page 10: Bletchingley Official Corporate Brochure 2012

bletchingley golf club

Hole 8, 372 yards, par 4A straightforward hole and a chance to relax. Good straight hitting and a well-judged pitch should leave you with a good birdie chance. Just remember to land the pitch a little short of the hole as the green runs from front to back!

Hole 9, 491 yards, par 5This is a good par 5 up the hill with out of bounds all up the left of this hole. Bunkers guard the right side and a bail-out tee shot can punish the weak. The line for the second shot is just to the left of the right-hand fairway bunker on the hill. This will leave you a simple pitch to a relatively flat green.

Hole 10, 366 yards, par 4The 10th hole will look pretty simple on the tee but be aware of the fairway trap and heavy rough on the left side as this gathers up many golf balls, The second shot is slightly downhill so be careful with your club selection. This green has many undulations and a two putt will be a job well done!

Hole 11, 533 yards, par 5A good par 5 and for the long hitters the line is over the trees on the right side, this will give you an opportunity to reach in two but be aware of the water that lurks to the right of the green, a sloppy second shot can so easily find a watery grave!

Hole 12, 155 yards, par 3Set in a quiet part of the course, but not as tranquil as it appears. The pond is there to collect the errant tee shot and not only for beauty, though an over-safe shot played too far to the right from the tee will be caught by one of the bunkers. Now you have a really frightening shot out with the green running away from you and water waiting to gather your ball. Par is a good score on this hole!

Page 11: Bletchingley Official Corporate Brochure 2012

bletchingley golf club

Hole 13, 300 yards, par 4Although the 13th hole is very short it has the most severe slopes of any green on the course so after the positional tee shot, you must find the same level as the flag on your second shot or a dreaded three putt is all too easy.

Hole 14, 193 yards, par 3Another fantastic-looking golf hole, this par 3 is straight downhill and club selection is vital as too long a tee shot will leave a real tricky pitch back.

Hole 15, 504 yards, par 5This requires a good straight tee shot that will automatically bounce to the left, the bunker is also well placed and may stop the longer hitter in his tracks. The second shot is slightly round to the right and very much uphill. For the average golfer this is a three-shot par 5 onto a green that is heavily guarded with bunkers waiting to eat up those loose third shots!

Hole 16, 438 yards, par 4The 16th can be played in two ways, the long and brave take the tee shot over the crest of the hill and leave themselves a tricky downhill lie for their second shot. But the majority will leave a blind second shot, hitting over the hill and down towards the green so a well picked-out line is needed to ensure that your ball does not run into any trouble.

Hole 17, 156 yards, par 3Another par 3, the 17th hole is one of the best holes on the course. Tall trees flank the hole, which creates a natural theatre, but it makes club selection difficult because of the swirling wind.

Hole 18, 389 yards, par 4A testing par 4 hitting up towards the church tower. A good solid tee shot just left of the bunkers will leave you a mid to short iron into a green that is well protected. A lack of concentration with the second shot can also end up wet if you lose the ball to the right of the green.

The Head Professional and Golf Manager at Bletchingley is Steven Cookson, who joined the club in 2008.

Steve and his team are on hand in the Pro Shop to give you the advice and information you require to make sound buying decisions.

We are stockists of all leading manufacturers of drivers, fairway woods, utility woods, irons, wedges and putters, including Titleist, TaylorMade and Ping.

Even better, why not get your club or set of clubs made to fit your individual swing by taking advantage of our popular custom fitting service? Many recreational golfers play with clubs which are ill-suited to their swing, but with a few simple measurements you could have your own purpose-built equipment. This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

If you are attached to your current set of clubs, they can be given a new lease of life with new grips or shafts.

The professional team are committed to allowing you to get the most from your game and you can look the part too thanks to our wide selection of clothing.

The Pro Shop is also the place to go to hire pull trolleys. Buggies can be hired too, although booking in advance is advisable. We also stock gift vouchers, the perfect present for the golfer in your life.

If you have the commitment and desire to lower your handicap then Head Professional Steven Cookson will be delighted to help you achieve

your goals, whatever they may be.

All areas of your game can be examined, whether it is a quick fix to something that has just gone wrong to remodelling the golf swing of an experienced player who is in search of sustainable long-term improvement.

Golfers can book a free 15-minute consultation before they invest in any lessons. They can speak to Steve, he can then assess and tell them what he thinks they need to change and they can decide from there the best way to progress.

A plan is discussed and agreed upon so that students are given a focus in their quest to be-come better, more consistent players.

Steve believes in the basic fundamentals, keeping it simple and producing a swing that can repeat, working with the physical abilities of the individual golfer. Video analysis is available if required.

Sometimes the technique is fine, but not the thought process behind the selection of shot, and that is where an on-course playing lesson can be a huge benefit.

Discounts are offered for a package of lessons booked at the same time and these make the ideal Christmas, birthday or anniversary gift.

To book your free consultation or a golf lesson, call Steve Cookson on 01883 744848.

Excellent instruction is nothing without the facilities to put those newly-learnt skills into action, working on them until they become

second nature.

Here, again, Bletchingley scores highly for the conscientious golfer looking to maximise their potential and lower their handicap to become the best they can possibly be.

To the right of the 18th fairway and green there is a practice ground where Head Professional Steven Cookson holds most of his lessons. Around 250 yards in length, flags and yardage markers help add focus for those striving to get better.

Open to members of the public as well as members, sleeves of balls can be hired from the Pro Shop.

There is an excellent chipping area on the practice ground, together with a practice bunker to work on another important area of the short game. Two very nice putting greens mirroring the fine surfaces to be found out on the course can be found just outside the Pro Shop.

A practice net close to the first tee enables those with time at a premium the chance to get loose before embarking on their round.

The Junior Development Programme at Bletchingley Golf Club is structured to encourage and educate children of all ages

on all aspects of the game, whilst having fun in a safe environment.

The club is working towards earning the English Golf Union’s GolfMark accreditation. This is an independently-audited national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities.

Golf is a healthy outdoor pursuit and a sporting passion which can last a lifetime. Learning the basics of the game as a youngster is so much easier than trying to grasp the techniques and skills involved later in life.

Listed below are the privileges that are available as a Junior Member: • Extensive playing rights (subject to handicap) • Regular competitions • Group coaching throughout the holiday periods • Full use of the clubhouse facilities• Full use of practice facilities We introduced a Junior Academy Membership in 2009 with the aim of encouraging the much younger golfer and help to produce budding stars of the future.

When playing on the course, the Academy Member must be accompanied by an older junior or playing adult. Academy Members will have the option of starting each hole from the 150-yard marker, so they are not overpowered by the full length of the course, thus making the game of golf as enjoyable as possible.

Group lessons will be available to all Junior Academy Members and the course will be available to play from 3pm in the summer and 1pm in the winter, seven days a week.

Members at Bletchingley enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs,

together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

Men

The men are keen supporters of the competitions run by the county, entering the Surrey County Inter-Club Four-Ball Competition, better known as the Kelso Hamilton Trophy, and the Surrey Fives, an inter-club team knockout competition contested by five players per side.

In addition, around a dozen friendly matches are enjoyed throughout the year at weekends, both home and away against clubs from Surrey and South East Kent.A friendly round of a golf is enjoyed before refreshment in the clubhouse and any member is able to put their name forward to represent the club in these very sociable matches.

Within the club itself, there is a Stableford and medal every month and in addition there are a great many honours board competitions. One of the highlights, the men’s Club Championship, is played over 36 holes with the best gross score the winner.

An important date in the Bletchingley calendar is the Festival of Golf weekend, where two board competitions run over consecutive days. The Bletchingley Masters is open to men and women who have handicaps of 12.4 or under. It is played in three stages, with players being eliminated at each stage. The top four players then contest the final in September.

Ladies

The Ladies’ section at Bletchingley GC is made up of around 80 ladies and represents a cross-section of ages and golfing interests. We cater for the serious golfer with monthly medals and qualifying Stablefords and inter-club county competitions for all handicap levels. We also have fun competitions and informal Monday morning roll-ups for those who are more inclined to chat than worry about their handicaps! New members are always made very welcome and quickly integrated into the section by means of our “godmother” system.

Ladies at Bletchingley share equal rights on the course; Ladies’ day is Thursday and there are also dedicated tee times on some weekends. Most

weekends throughout the year there are Club competitions that full 7 day ladies can participate in. Besides the more serious competitions there are also Ladies’ and Mixed friendly matches scheduled both during the week and at weekends.

The section organises two short golfing breaks a year, one in the spring, the other in the autumn. There is also an active Bridge section for friendly games throughout the year as well as a Winter League which involves matches against other golf clubs.

The Ladies section is proud to support nominated charities through a mix of bridge, golf and social activities.

Seniors

Bletchingley Golf Club’s Seniors’ Section has developed into one of the most active and successful of its kind in the area since its launch on 12th January 1994 when there were 24 in attendance at the inaugural meeting, nine of whom are still playing.

Membership is open to all male golfers over the age of 55 in playing and non-playing categories. Non-players are able to participate in a wide variety of social and other non-golfing events in accordance with the BGC Constitution.

The focal point of the week for the Section is Tuesday morning when the course is reserved for seniors for Stableford and medal events as well as inter-club and ‘fun’ matches. Typically around 60 take part in a structured pre-booked tee time set-up with players split into three sections, Gold, Silver and Bronze, on a handicap and competitive basis. However, the spirit of the Section is more fully reflected in the relaxed atmosphere of the clubhouse where an extensive menu, friendly bar and convivial company provide the ideal environment for reliving golfing triumphs and forgetting the mishaps.

There is no shortage of golfing or social opportuni-ties on and off the course but events are carefully arranged and balanced to avoid overkill. They range from an annual Invitation Day to Sample Tuesday, organised Away Days and Inter-Club Matches. In more detail they are:

• Inter-Club Matches - An expanding fixture list has resulted in the Section currently playing 11 matches home and away against other leading clubs in the area.

• Invitation Day - Once a year Seniors are able to invite a non-member for a round on a designated day.

• Sample Tuesday - This is another opportunity for members to invite non-members along to take part in a Tuesday morning event to familiarise themselves with the course and sample Seniors’ hospitality.

• Away Days - Individual members use their initiative to organise golfing trips at home and abroad. Recent overseas trips have included visits to courses in Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and France while the West Country is a popular location for domestic touring.

• Internal - Competitive matches against the

bletchingley golf club

Ladies and Junior Sections and the under-60 club members are an important part of the Bletchingley calendar, providing the opportunity for the Sections to meet on and off the course.

• Last but not least the Seniors make the most of the festive season with a Christmas Lunch and Christmas Dinner where partners take pride of place.

BOFS Section

All men over 50 are eligible to play with the BOFs but only if you enjoy your golf and good company. If you are interested, join us at 8am on Wednes-days. There are usually about 20 to 25 of us turn up even if the weather is a bit doubtful.

As part of our regular roll-up, we take part in the monthly mid-week Stableford which helps keep our club handicaps at the correct level.

Our golfing programme includes home and away matches with other clubs, a match against the Ladies Section, our own BOFs Championship, at least one Away Day and at Christmas time we have a fun competition and Christmas lunch.

Why choose us?

We have an invaluable reputation over the last four decades, our non-commission salesmaen are there to insure that dealing with Merstham Glass is an enjoyable experience whether you are just having a piece of glass cut, having new sealed units, changing your windows or having a brand new Conservatory we make it our aim to leave you happy with the service and the work. We do not advertise heavily because we believe our best form of advertising is YOU the customer, for years much of our work has come from repeat customers and recommendations.

Another important reason to choose Merstham Glass is our knowledge and experience in the trade, we have researched and found the best products in the industry from handles, hinges and locks to the frame profile to provide the best products, in fact we never stop our interest in products becoming available.

Quality service and value for money.

Our after sales service is something we are very pround of, because we have been around since 1972 our customers have the peace of mind that when we give a 10 year guarantee we will honor it, we are not a ‘here today gone tomorrow’ company.

Many of the staff at Merstham Glass are long standing employees; we do not subcontract fitting work, like many of our competitors. We do use a few known self employed fitters to help our team during busy times, we also use two known builders to form bases and brickwork for conservatories and to assist when fitting lintels but they remain firmly under our control.

For more information regarding our full range of products and services or to arrange a free no obligation estimate give us a call. Our friendly, experienced team will be more than happy to help.

Bletchingley Golf Club extends a warm welcome to all visitors. Our green fees repre-sent fantastic value for money.

Reduced rates are available to guests of members, juniors, holders of the county card and for those able to play late in the afternoon when the course is at its quietest. Often we run special offers during the winter months, details of which can be found on our website.

We have also installed an Internet Tee Reservation System which allows members and visitors to book tee times through the club website at any time.

Please take a moment to visit our website and read our rules on dress regulations. A minimum standard of smart casual dress is required in all areas of the clubhouse at all times.

We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible.

Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course.
