BRUNEI NEWSPAPERS PART I By Nellie Dato Paduka Haji Sunny

Introduction

Wikipedia defines newspapers as “containing information, news and advertising often feature articles on politics, crimes, sports, economics and finance. Most traditional papers also feature an editorial page containing personal opinions of writers.”

You will find a wide variety of information in newspapers, including editorial opinions, letters to the editor, photographs of events, places and people, obituaries, entertainment features such as horoscopes, weather forecasts, advice column, gossip, life style, food column, reviews of movies plays and restaurants, classified adverts, announcements, display adverts of products and services, cartoon and comic strip.

Nobody can deny that newspapers are an essential and a ‘must have’ source material in any library, information, resource and learning centres big or small. They can be found in public libraries, special or academic. Some holdings may be small but some may extend into a specialised collection holding invaluable information dating back from the earliest print of the national cultural heritage treasure and an excellent primary source for researchers. Newspapers best describe any event first hand, depicting actual coverage based on the literary content as written by the journalists.

There are now five types of newspapers:

Daily

A daily newspaper is issued every day, sometimes with the exception of Sundays. Sunday editions of daily newspapers tend to be larger, include more specialized sections and advertising inserts, and cost more.

Weekly

Weekly newspapers tend to be smaller than daily papers.

National

Most countries have at least one national newspaper that circulates throughout the whole country.

International

International editions of national newspapers are scaled down to remove articles that might not interest the wider range of readers.

Online

Virtually all printed newspapers now have on-line editions. Web-based newspapers are now common place.

Brunei Newspapers- Chronology Newspapers first appeared in Burnei Darussalam in the 1950s. The first being Salam Seria in 1952 produced by the British Malaya Petroleum Company. The paper carrying company news was intended for its employees. This was followed by the Borneo Bulletin in 1953, the Pelita Brunei in 1956. Most of the newspapers had their printing presses based in Kuala Belait until at least the late 60s. The first three papers have remained until today joined by newcomers like Media Permata and the Brunei Times. Today the Borneo Bulletin, Pelita Brunei, Media Permata and Brunei Times remain as the leading and main daily national papers in Brunei Darussalam. Year started Name Publisher Circulation Price
