    Bitter kola: antidote to malaria at no cost?

    Kola nut or bitter cola.

    The attractive nature of the kola nut and bitter cola a snack for refreshment.

    An evergreen tree of up to thirty-three meters in height, Bitter Kola has thick slash and grayish-brown bark and buttressed

    trunk. It bears greenish-white flowers and orange-coloured fruit, carrying brown seeds embedded in the pulp. Bitter kola is a

    type of kola found in parts of Nigeria. Its biological name is Garcinia Kola and it belongs to the family of Guittiferal.

    Consumption of kola nut and bitter cola in the African community dates back to pre-historic times. In fact, it is the custom of

    the Ibos from Nigeria to present kola nut to visitors as a way of welcoming them. Their neighbours in Yoruba also see it as

    essential requirements for a marriage ceremony.

    Kola nutsConsumption or serving of bitter kola is however not restricted to ceremonial events or as snack. Its medicinal

    uses for malaria make it the relish of many people in Ile Ife, the cradle of the Yorubas.

    Bitter kola is good in preventing malaria.

    Bitter kola is a medium sized forest tree found throughout West and Central Africa. The seed, also known as false kola is

    eaten as refreshment in Nigeria as a cure for:

    general aches in the head, back, etc.,and also as a de-wormer.

    Igbo medicine men prescribe the fruit for arthritic conditions.

    Mastication of bitter kola relieves:

    coughs,

    hoarseness,

    bronchial and

    throat troubles.

    It is said to be a remedy for:

    dysentery,

    osteoarthritis,

    antidote against poisoning and

    considered aphrodisiac.

    Considerable experimental evidence has been adduced to support its chemical constituents against several ailments in the

    community, including malaria. Traditional healers had been prescribing bitter kola for the treatment of malaria. Under

    laboratory conditions, they found that extracts from bark, stem and seed of bitter kola tree inhibit the growth of malaria

    parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) by at least 60% at a low concentration of 6 mg/ml (1999, a group of researchers in

    Kinshasa, Congo). The chemical constituents in Bitter Kola have anti-malaria properties, because of its quinones and

    kolaviron contents which are found to have anti-malaria effects. The bark, the stem and the seed of Bitter Kola all contain

    anti-malaria properties. Its chemical constituents called Kolaviron, when it was tested on malaria parasite, it had significant

    anti-malarial activity, It has other effects on the human cells.

    Nigerian researchers have also developed herbal cures for malaria that can take care of resistant strains from a cocktail from

    local plants that includes bitter kola. A typical cocktail developed by a plant taxonomist at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka

    (UNN) and Ebonyi State University, South- east of Nigeria, Professor Jonathan Okafor, consists of:

    Morinda lucida (commonly called local cinchona or Brimstone tree.),Nauclea latifolia,

    lemon grass,

    male pawpaw leaves,

    Moringa oleifera (drumstick tree),

    mango bark,

    bitter kola and

    guava leaves and bark.

    Medicinal health benefits attributed the widespread use of plants in traditional medicine.

    Bitter Kola also known as:

    Aki Ilu in Igbo,

    NamijinGoro in Hausa and

    Orogbo in Yoruba,

    Bitter Kola [Garcinia Kola] seeds are chewed to treat:

    bronchitis,throat infections and;

    an infusion of the root with little salt is a remedy for Asthma (according to Dr. Gordian Obute of the Department of Plant

    Science and Biotechnology, University of Port Harcourt).

    The fruit, seed, nut and bark of Bitter Kola have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat many forms of

    ailment.

    Century long practice of using Bitter Kola to treat chest colds. Bitter Kola improves lungs and respiratory functions by

    enlarging the alveolar ducts [a small air bag in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged with the blood]

    and improving the strength of the fibers in the lung tissue. This is attributed to Bitter Kolas high antioxidant content

    (Journal of Pulmonary Medicine).

    Researchers have discovered that Bitter Kola has clinically significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects on patients

    with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, characterized by pain, inflammation and limitedmovement in the joints, according to the National Institute of Health. The causes of osteoarthritis include joint injury,

    obesity and aging.

    Bitter Kola nut can be chewed for the treatment of symptoms of cold like cough and catarrh. It is also cures male impotency

    and the building of strong immunity against infectious diseases.

    Bitter Kola also serves as a snake and insect repellant. The nut helps to expel dangerous snakes and destructive ants from

    your home. It can also be taken to detoxify the body system when food poisoning is suspected.

    Medical experts have advised Nigerians to regularly eat bitter kola, as it is a potent antibiotic, which could be effective in the

    treatment of many ailments and infections.

    Bitter kola is used in the preparation of herbal drugs either as nourishment, supplement or herbal remedy (Bartholomew

    Brai, the Nutritional Biochemist at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research).

    If a patient on medication chews bitter kola; aside this, bitter kola does not have any other side effect.

    Bitter kola has lots of health benefits, like the treatment of:

    cough,

    sneezing,

    cold,

    diarrhea,

    tuberculosis,

    bacterial infection and

    fever.

    It improves lungs function by expanding the alveolar ducts and sac in the lungs thereby improving and strengthening the

    fibres in the lung tissue.

    There is no recorded side effect to the regular intake of bitter kola, adding that it was all round medicinal.

    Bitter kola has chemical compounds that could help the breakdown of glycogen in the liver (Emeka Amaechi).

    Bitter kola has antioxidant properties used as tonic for the liver and the gall bladder, which helps detoxifies the body

    system.

    It clears the voice by stimulating the production of mucus along the lining of the vocal tube which softens the dry throat.

    Bitter kola is anti-poison. When food is suspected to be contaminated by bacteria, chewing of bitter kola will prevent the

    development of any infection or poison.

    It also reduces eye pressure and relieves arthritis by reducing swelling, pain and increase joint movement.

    By using a picture of a kola nut when talking about bitter kola you are misinforming people who don't know better. I don't

    actually know anything about bitter cola, but I know a lot about

    kola nuts (not bitter kola) can be chewed to release energy and hold back thirst and hunger, and yes they are also bitter When

    grated green (not dried) and cooked (not just steeped) with almond milk and sugar they are delicious. You can grate the dry

    nuts also,or grate them and let them dry, and you still get a nice tasting drink that can take care of food poisoning & many

    other things.

    The AWESOME benefits of cooking the kola nut gratings within minutes would require pages of notes. Do NOT confusethis with bitter kola.

    Bitter cola is highly medicinal, I chew it twice a week.
