BUSY TIMES FOR 5/6C5/6C has had a very busy year of activities. Many students have enjoyed various sporting and musical opportunities and represented the school well. Students have visited the art gallery and cinema in Murwillumbah and visited a careers day at South Tweed. They have participated successfully in the showcase of work morning and the choral speaking eisteddfod and opened the classroom for education/book week activities. All of this as well as completing English, Maths and other subjects. Talk about multi-tasking!

FAR NORTH COAST REGIONAL DANCE CAMPCongratulations to Cate H who recently attended the Far North Coast Regional Dance Camp in Port Macquarie for 3 days. It was a great opportunity for her to extend her skills in dance with instruction from Sydney Dance Company tutors and other vari-ous professional instructors. Cate also enjoyed performing and making new friends amongst the group of talented dancers she worked with. Great effort , Cate!

ELIZAS’ GREEN THUMBSIt’s all in the name, Eliza H and Eliza B. Here’s their first crop of peas!

5/6B SCIENCE DAY AT THE PRESCHOOLOn Thursday 15th of August, 2013 our class went to the preschool and showed the kids some science experiments. We did the exploding lunch bag, lava cups, sparkly explosion, peppery skin, bucket and ball, swirly colours, soap boats, under pressure, chicken cups and the finale was mentos in a bottle of diet coke. I think it was a good day and I hope to do it again sometime. Billy

THE LITTLE PEOPLE’S COMMENTSAllyarna: “One was like a volcano – the coke bottle and mints. I liked the popping one. It went pop!”

Bella: “They were cool. The ball stayed in the bucket. I liked it when the bags exploded.”

Lacey: “I liked it when they had a race with the bags popping.”

Sam: “I liked the one with water and pepper. I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

Stella: “I think they were good. My favourite was the cup with the glitter that exploded.”

Casey: “I liked the water how it didn’t come out. That was amazing.”

Chloe: “They were fun. I liked the first one (with pepper and water). It all went back.”

Jack: “It was great. They put colours in.”

Freya: “I liked the one that popped.”

Jarah: I love the one exploding up with glitter, vinegar and cooking powder.”

Mia: “I liked the coke bit.”

Natasha: “They let me have a turn at the experiments.”

Reuban: “I liked stirring stuff around.”

Ruby: “I liked the two exploding ones.”

Samara “They were good. I liked them and one made a sound like a chick.”

Siana: “I like the cup with glitter in it and it exploded.”

Tanja: “I liked the exploding ones.”

5/6B hopes that the Pre-School children enjoyed doing their experiments as much we enjoyed showing them how to do them.

2013 DEBATINGThis year, 17 Stage 3 students were involved in debating. We entered the Premier’s Debating Challenge and debated during 2nd term. For the most part, students had not experienced debating and worked hard to learn all the intricacies of debating. The Premier’s Debating Challenge is not an easy competition, as not only do students need to understand the skills, they must also work as a team, within a one hour timeframe on a previously unknown topic.I am very proud of their efforts. Although we did not advance to the finals round, I am certain that the students have gained valuable skills that will hold them in good stead for future debating and hopefully our students from Year 4 and 5 who had the opportunity to be an audience for some of the debates, will feel confident to join in next year. Sharon Butler

BEEP! BEEP! ROAD RUNNERS For the last 10 weeks students have been in-volved in an optional lunch time activity each Wednesday called “The Running Club”. It began as part of our “Live Life Well” program where we wanted to encourage students to be active each lunch break. Each week we started off with some long and short runs for students to be involved with. Up to 40 students participated each week including students from all grades. Students would then be involved with activities run by students in Years 5 and 6. Thanks very much to all students who worked hard to organise activities and make it fun for those involved. The students who ran events include: Sam P, Jack T, Marshal G, Erin B, Holly W, Shiana L, Indra C, Ezekieal P, Olivia P, Alyssa T and Alycia F.

PUBLIC SPEAKINGRecently all students have delivered a speech for class Public Speaking which is part of the Talking and Listening component of English.Following class and stage finals we have three finalists who go onto represent our school at the Tweed District Public Speaking Finals being held at Banora Point on Thursday 5th September, 2013. The representatives will be Maddison M from Stage 1, Amy R from Stage 2 and Mia D from Stage 3. Good Luck girls. Julie Stuart
