We have been blessed with a great school year! Last fall began with bright promise as we opened the doors to the new Perino Science Center and our students’ academics were taken to a new level.

Thanks to our strong alumni network and support of wonderful family and friends, I am excited to announce the Development Department surpassed all its goals and roared to a great finish this fiscal year. We were deeply moved by the phenomenal success at this year’s auction; read all about it on page 8. I have never known a network as loyal as our St. Bede family; we are a Catholic school success story because of the passion and commitment of so many people. Businesses near and far have helped in remarkable ways to assist with our fundraising efforts and the Alumni of St. Bede are legendary for their continued loyalty and support of our students.

You are making it clear that you are dedicated to improving the St. Bede experience for future generations and want to do your part to keep our tuition low and accessible for each and every student that wants to be a Bruin. Thank you for the wonderful support you continue to offer St. Bede in so many ways.

I invite you to come back to campus not just this September for Homecoming but for your visit “home” anytime! Come and see first-hand the amazing things happening at St. Bede and the students who continue to make us all very proud as the next generation of Bruins ready themselves to make a difference in the world of tomorrow.

It is an honor to serve St. Bede and witness the recent campus transformation; as St. Benedict once said, “Always We Begin Again.” It is in the Benedictine spirit that we celebrate these accomplishments and look ahead with joy to the new school year.

May God’s blessings continue to be upon you for your generosity and support. We cannot roar without you!

We ROARED to new heights netting $350,000!

The St. Bede Auction and Special Events roared to new heights netting $350,000 and surpassing our goal by $80,000 closing out another fabulous year of generosity. What a phenomenal accomplishment! Our Fund-A-Need – Secure Our School topped over six figures for the first time ever raising $120,000, and well exceeding our goal of $90,000. This will fulfill a new Safety and Security Initiative providing St. Bede a Turn Key Campus-Wide Video Surveillance System that is being installed this summer. Additional funds raised have allowed us to expand the depth of the project providing even more security in additional areas on campus. With a lead gift of $10,000 from the Miller Group Charitable Trust, paddles were raised high and often. Mr. Angelo Perino '80 and an anonymous donor each generously made a gift of $15,000 to add to even more excitement. Mr. Kim Keutzer '70 generously offered a $5,000 match at the $100 level and by the time that level was done; $11,200 had been raised for St. Bede.

Special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, The J.A. Happ Family Foundation, our Spirit of St. Bede Sponsor, Geneva Holdings LLC, and our Green and White Sponsors, Cawley Chicago and Tee Group Films.

The night once again was a sell out with over 320 people in attendance and over 100 new attendees.

Mobile bidding is a key to our success and truly impacted the auction to make our goal. Every year our mobile bidding audience grows and more and more people participate both in the room and remotely. New this year was St. Bede’s Golden Ticket which was quite the hit with all 100 tickets sold before dinner. The Golden Ticket offered the opportunity at $100 per ticket for one lucky winner to pre-select a LIVE auction item.

John Spencer as Master of Ceremonies and Catholic Charity Auctioneers Chad and Jill Coe from Deefield teamed up this year for the Live Auction. Some of those highlights included an exclusive Silver Oak Package

donated by David and Kary Duncan, which sold for $16,500, and the exclusive Rich Harvest Farms package in which Jerry Rich generously matched.

The overwhelming amount of support from our Bruin community was sensational. Thank you to everyone who helped make our Auction and Special Events a success. Your generosity is what makes it possible to keep our tuition low and bridge the gap of over 58%. Bonnie Prokup has done an outstanding job in the organization and execution to make this event possible and to reach these amazing totals for St. Bede.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, supporters and underwriters and to our amazing parents and extraordinary volunteers who dedicated their time in support of St. Bede Academy.

A group of twenty St. Bede juniors and seniors took a trip of a lifetime to Peru and were able to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World up close and in living color. This year’s trip to South America began in Lima, the capital of Peru, where students toured the city and sampled its unique cuisine. Students then visited different areas of the country such as Cuzco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. Students were able to familiarize themselves with life in Peru through hands on service projects and authentic interactions with locals. This allowed our students to build confidence in Spanish through language lessons that correlated with the curriculum the Spanish Department had put together. As students worked with locals and a series of small community based projects, they were immersed in the culture expanding their fluency and experiencing life as the Peruvians do. “The goal of these trips is to help our students return home with a better

SBA faculty member Stephanie Haskell-Free and her husband, Michael accompanied ten students on a trip to Greece for a unique educational experience. Their trip began in Athens, namesake of the goddess Athena, where they walked in the footsteps of ancient Greeks at the Acropolis. Their next steps took them to the top of the Acropolis where they looked out across Athens to see the Parthenon’s mighty 2,400-year-old columns. It was here, that the students learned about the Shrine of Dionysus before traveling down to the Acropolis Museum.

It was then on to Delphi, home of the Oracle of Apollo one of the most popular sites in Greece where students viewed the Ancient Theater and the Archaeological Museum. From Delphi, students travelled to Olympia birthplace of the Olympic Games to see the ruins where athletes trained and the artifacts in the Archimedes museum.

A tour of Mycenae allowed them to participate in an olive oil lesson where they tasted a variety of oils and discovered how to identify the differences in quality. The tour allowed the students to see the Citadel and Treasury of Atreus and the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Mycenae. Students were also able to explore the Great Theatre and the Archaeological Museum of Epidaurus before learning about ancient Greek ceramics at a pottery class where they created their own unique piece of Grecian pottery.

A cruise on the Aegean Sea, took the students to the Temple of Poseidon and the town of Napthio which gave them the opportunity to enjoy the cuisine, shop for souvenirs and mingle with the locals.

In 2020, students will travel to Austria, Germany and the Swiss Alps!

understanding of what meaningful service means as well as realizing the similarities and differences that interconnect us all,” says Señora Gonzalez, one of St. Bede’s Spanish teachers. For many of our students, this was the first time they traveled without their parents. These experiences are ones to remember for a lifetime. The incredible opportunities that come with travel are methods the department uses to bring the language to life for its students. We are extremely grateful that the Foreign Language Department has put together such a well thought out and planned international program that allows Saint Bede students to experience the world like never before.

Students and chaperones worked together with the locals from Ollantaytambo to help them build a small shop in their village.

Our students enjoyed making new friends from the school in Nanning.

STUDENT TRAVEL

Learning Centuries of Rich History and Culture in ChinaMarcia Wagner, SBA Dean of Residential Programs and several St. Bede students boarded a plane and embarked on a journey to the other side of the world. Starting in the south of China, the students first toured Guangzhou and attended classes with students at local schools, learning about typical Chinese school breakfasts and lunches and trying their hand at Chinese calligraphy. After touring Guangzhou and visiting the site of an ancient buried road, it was off to catch the train and speed 415 miles inland to Nanning. There, students stayed with host families and experienced life in a Chinese household. They were treated to local delicacies such as duck and chicken feet as well as many of the exotic fruits common to the region. Visiting one school that grows all of their fruit on-campus, the students were able to participate in cutting down a banana tree and sampling fresh kumquats straight off the branch. While making new friends at the schools in Nanning, customs were exchanged by teaching local students how to make Easter eggs and learning a traditional Chinese song and how to make five-colored glutinous rice. The group was awed by the beautiful flowers and scenery while visiting the China International Garden Expo. Upon arriving in Shanghai, students toured the Bund at night and shopped on Nanjing Road after their visit to the Oriental Pearl Tower. Then it was on to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and the Humble Administrator’s Garden before packing up and getting ready to head home.

This chance to share a part of our culture and learn more about others will help enrich the lives of St. Bede students now and in the future.

Students and faculty marked the first full year of learning in the spectacular new

Perino Science Center. The communal areas were buzzing with excitement as the school year began; the larger classrooms allowed us to host students

from local grade schools for a variety of collaborative learning sessions and hands

on lab experiments. The PSC has proven to be an incentive for the future as it has attracted prospective local and international students for enrollment, and given us an updated venue to hold annual events and group meetings, increasing our exposure throughout the community.

Our vision to modernize the school continues with Phase 3 of the Legacy Project. This phase will revitalize our beloved main building. Local contractors will install improved lighting and new electrical service to support technology needs and air conditioning. All learning spaces on the main floor and second floor will be renovated. New flooring will be installed in the hallways to match the interior in the PSC and all walls will get a fresh coat of paint. The majority of our wooden doors and wooden floors will be refinished and new lockers and furniture will complete the renovation.

The fundraising plan for this Phase has been used effectively by Catholic high schools for decades – graduating classes rally each other and call each other to solicit gifts and pledges to fund the renovation of a classroom. Classes and donors are welcome to dedicate a classroom in honor of a monk, teacher or classmate. A few classes are on board with a goal of raising $100,000 or more each. We need a dozen more classes to join the cause to make this Phase successful. Of course, as a private institution, St. Bede will always need and welcome gifts from individuals, families and businesses.

The cost of these renovations is a very practical and achievable goal of $2 million. The most critical need for Phase 3 is new bathrooms. At a cost of $300,000 the existing toilet tower will be updated with new plumbing, fixtures and receptacles. Construction will include men’s and women’s bathrooms on both the first and second floors. Thanks to the generosity of a major donor and other generous contributors, we are able to begin the project on one floor this summer. We have a balance of $75,000 to reach our total bathroom goal. Your gift to help fund the completion of this project in full would be greatly appreciated. Please call me at 480-737-4090 to do your part and make a difference for St. Bede Academy.

Sincerely,

Matt McGinnis '85 Director, Legacy Project

During his long career as a pharmacist, Gene owned and operated several independent pharmacies in the Chicagoland area, and it was as a pharmacist that he became interested in orthotics, especially custom-made bracing. As a result, he entered Northwestern University’s Prosthetic and Orthotic Program in 1989 and was certified by the American Board for Certification shortly thereafter. In 2002, Gene was included in the initial group of orthotists to be licensed by the State of Illinois. As owner and President of Ballert Orthopedic, he developed that company as the leader in the evaluation, fabrication, fitting and adjustment of orthotic and prosthetic devices in the Northern Illinois region. Over the years, Gene filed patent applications for several orthotic devices, which are either pending or have been granted, including a cranial helmet for infants that is commonly used to correct skull deformations in infants. Earlier this year, Gene sold his company to Scheck & Siress. Gene has lectured extensively on cranial molding helmets and the orthotic treatment of neuromuscular disease at Northwestern University’s Orthotics and Prosthetics Certification Program, and has provided countless educational in-services to Chicago-area physical therapists, nurses and physicians. 20 • THE BEDAN RECORD

It is with great joy that we have come to celebrate the wonderful gifts, talents and experiences that

Br. George, Br. Nathaniel and Fr. Michael have shared with us throughout their many years of service at

St. Bede Abbey & Academy. We are proud to share their journey of profession with our Bruin family.

Br. George Matsuoka, OSB

Br. George Matsuoka was born in Chicago on August 27, 1921. George was raised by his father for a short time after his mother’s death before making the difficult decision to entrust George’s care to the religious sisters of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ who staffed the Angel Guardian Orphanage. When George became interested in the religious life he went first to St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. It was the early 1940s just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Since George is of Japanese descent, traveling in those days became problematic. Indeed, the F.B.I. arrived at St. Meinrad to interview Br. George. The agents gave him a choice: return to Illinois or be sent to an internment camp in California. On his journey back to Illinois he stopped at St. Bede Abbey entering the community on December 7, 1942.

Upon arriving at St. Bede it was discovered that George was willing to do almost any kind of work. He worked first in the bakery and then the print shop. When he finally received a driver’s license he began to make deliveries for the print shop. It was not long after that it was noticed that these delivery trips took longer than expected because Br. George would stop along the way to give a tin of cookies to one of his many friends. As Br. George grew older and retired from the print shop, he began the practice of greeting academy students at the beginning and end of the school day to shake their hand. He enjoyed this so much it became his main ministry, which he did with a smile each and every day. Br. George personified St. Benedict’s directive to receive everyone as if they were Christ. The student and alumni of the academy continue to have great affection and reverence for Br. George.

Recently we had to make the difficult decision of sending Br. George to live at St. Joseph Nursing Home. Br. George’s mounting mental and physical limitations made it difficult for us to offer him the adequate health care he needs. He is adjusting well to his new surroundings and still walks around with a smile on his face and a hand outstretched to greet people. Pray to God in gratitude for the many blessings Br. George has given us and join us in honoring his 75 years of profession as a monk of St. Bede Abbey.

Mail for Br. George can be sent to St. Joseph Nursing Home 401 9th St, Lacon, IL 61540.

Shaking the hands of students at the beginning and end of the day became his ministry and he did so with a smile, each and every day.

Br. Nathaniel Grossman, OSB

Fr. Michael Calhoun, OSB '89

Br. Nathaniel Grossman was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. His father was the Assistant Director for Operations & Finance at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The many hours that Br. Nathaniel spent at the museum during his youth imbued him with a great love for and knowledge of art. He attended Benedictine High School in Cleveland, operated by the monks of St. Andrew Abbey, and after his first two years of college he joined the monastery, which sent him to St. Bede Abbey for a year of novitiate training. At the end of that year he concluded that his vocation was really to St. Bede, for which he professed vows on September 1, 1969.

After obtaining an undergraduate degree in philosophy from St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1971, Br. Nathaniel went on to earn a Master’s degree in English from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1977, with a concentration on Anglo-Saxon, Medieval and Renaissance British literature. He taught English on and off for a number of years at St. Bede Academy, where his students found him to be a dedicated and challenging teacher.

After Br. Nathaniel retired from teaching, he was appointed choir master in the abbey and as such, found and produced both texts and music for the monks’ celebrations of Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. He has also served the monastic community as postulant director, novice master, and master of junior monks, and also as subprior and prior. Over the years he has gone on to serve the monastery as sacristan and been responsible for creating flower arrangements for the abbey church. When the Ordinary of the Mass was revised several years ago, he returned to his work with music, adapting old and composing new settings for its various newly translated texts.

In recent years he has suffered a number of illnesses which have, to his dismay, limited his participation in community activities. The number of cards, gifts, and visits that he has received from former students is a testament to the impact that he has had on their lives. Let us remember Br. Nathaniel in prayer as he celebrates 50 years as a professed monk at St. Bede Abbey.

Fr. Michael Calhoun was born in Belvidere, Illinois. When he was young his parents moved to Utica where he spent the entirety of his childhood. He came to St. Bede Academy as a freshmen in 1985 and graduated in 1989. Late in his senior year of high school, Fr. Michael and his parents met with then Abbot Marion to discuss his desire to join the abbey. Abbot Marion related that a critical first step was attending and graduating from college. So Fr. Michael was sent to St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After finishing the formation program to become a monk at St. Bede, Fr. Michael was sent to teach religion in the academy. After three years of teaching, Fr. Michael went to study at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity as well as a Master of Arts degree in Scripture. He was ordained to the

priesthood in 2002. To prepare himself to work in the St. Bede Abbey formation program he attended St. John’s School of Theology in Collegeville, Minnesota where he graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Monastic Studies.

At present Fr. Michael is the sacristan for the community’s worship services, the novice master, the Prior of the monastery, and teaches two religion classes in the academy. When Fr. Claude Peifer died in 2014, Fr. Michael took up the challenge of completing the reorganization of the Abbey Theology library. While the task of reorganizing is completed, Fr. Michael continues to add to the collection. He has recently submitted an application for admittance to the online program through the University of Illinois in the hopes of obtaining a Library Science degree. Let us pray for Fr. Michael as we celebrate his 25 years of profession as a monk of St. Bede Abbey.
