The design of the house is unique as they have front door only. This is relate with their belief that once they are given sustenance by God, it will remain in their house. Their houses consist of three parts which at the top (store), middle (sleeping place) and the lowermost (place their livestock, mainly pig). There is a ‘virgin house’ that specifically use for unmarried, virgin girls. All unmarried girls in the village will stay with their parents during day time and will sleep at this ‘virgin house’ at night and taken care by special appointed nanny, similar to grandmother. However, there are several tourist tips if you plan to visit this place such as: a) When shop for souvenirs, handicrafts or any of their products, never touch or show your interest if you are not serious on buying. They will conclude that you will purchase upon touching their selling items. b) Always refer to your small notes of currency exchange as the seller will manipulate the price by converting it to our local currency, sound to be very cheap but actually they manipulate the figure. c) Reject the offer nicely because they will approach you when you pass by their shop / stall (unless you have tour leader’s flag with you). If you made them angry, they may cast a spell or even ghosts silently.

Do you plan to visit Medan? If you do, don’t forget to include Samosir Island in your itinerary. Based on personal experience, this place is worth to visit in order to know the history and culture of Batak people. We have an academic trip to Medan on 3-6 Mac 2016 under Tour Planning and Guiding (HTT353) course. d) Be careful with the words you are saying, it could be offensive towards the locals and the locals are surely strict.

e) Since the population of people in Samosir Island are 99% Christians and 1% Muslims, kindly observe the exposure of selling items (especially cloth) to their dogs that freely mingle around the store. Maybe not to buy can be a wise decision!

Acara Amal Jom Free Market 2016Oleh: Fatimah Abd Ghani

Apa keistimewaan ‘Free Market’?
