FROM THE MAYOR’S DESKMANY town residents have had extraordinary problems with existing drainage, which was unable to cope with the excessive water from recent downpours. The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council staff has been busy visiting the problem areas and they are looking for solutions to this problem caused by the unseasonal heavy rainfall.

The Blackall Industrial Estate drainage project, undertaken by Town and Country Industries Pty Ltd, has made great progress despite the constant rain periods; there are very few of the stockpiled pipes left on the river bank with the loam pile much reduced as well. This project will drain about one third of the town together with the industrial estate. The council is looking to plan for the future in this area, which hopefully will begin steps to alleviate problems experienced in other areas of town.

The Blackall Saleyards was the venue for a well attended and very successful Droughtmaster Bull Sale on Tuesday, October 12,

with all lots clearing and prices remaining firm with a top price of $13,000 being paid.

October 19 saw a good line up of 88 well presented Santa Gertrudis bulls for the 25th Annual Barcoo Breeders Bull Sale. Keen bidding from the buyers definitely gave the vendors, Local Studs, Forrest Park and Drensmaine, a very good sale indeed. Congratulations to saleyards manager David Carter and his staff on the presentation of the selling complex; it certainly did look wonderful.

OUTBACK Group owner Ian Kinsey is expanding his multi-million dollar portfolio with another two businesses; one still in the planning stages, the other near completion.

Owner of Ian Kinsey Outback Chemist, Toy Kingdom, Outback Variety Store, 5 Star Handimarket, and Outback Emporium, Ian will now open the doors to Furniture One in late November/early December.

On a 2000 square metre block, Ian said the former Retravision and Thrifty-Link buildings plus additional land at the back, had huge potential for expansion if

Blackall embraced the Furniture One store.

He said it could end up being the size of a Harvey Norman in years to come.

Ian said initially there would be two or three full-time people employed.

“Instead of moving money out of town, I’ve invested back into Blackall,” he said.

Ian also plans on opening another grocery store in Blackall.

“I would be looking at some time next year (for grocery store opening).”

This could see the employment of maybe another 10 people in town, he said. Ian also owns a number of houses in Blackall.

Ian continues to expand his business portfolio

Outback Group owner Ian Kinsey looks forward to opening these doors to his next adventure, a furniture shop.

Blackall State School supports Day for DanielBLACKALL State School will be participating in the Day for Daniel this year by holding a child safety awareness event supporting the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established in 2005 by Denise and Bruce Morcombe following the tragic abduction and suspected murder of their 13-year-old son Daniel in December 2003.

To promote the foundation’s aim of making the world a safer place for our children, an annual awareness ‘Day for Daniel’ is held involving schools and local communities. This year’s Day for Daniel is Friday,

October 29.Now in its sixth year the

Day for Daniel continues to grow on a national scale and is recognised as Australia’s largest participation event of its type.

It is the foundation’s aim that the Day for Daniel becomes a national day for child safety awareness with schools and communities across Australia participating.

Last year more than 700 schools and businesses from all across Australia took part and this year up to 500,000 school aged children are expected to participate.

These education activities are designed to provide life skills for children in a fun and informative manner without the fear factor. The Day for Daniel is not a memorial day – it is a learning day for our children.

Schools and businesses can register through the website www.dayfordaniel.com.au

Club’s youngest member wins Handicap SinglesMITCHELL Pfingst became the youngest bowler ever to win a club singles final when he narrowly defeated veteran Ross Browning on Sunday.

Even though Mitch had a big handicap advantage, he played very good bowls to hold on. After leading 29-21 Mitch looked an easy winner but Ross, as usual, dug deep to get to 28-30 behind and was holding two shots when Mitch put one right on the kitty to win 31-28.

In another very good and close B Singles, Col Pfingst and Gary Whitfield went head to head all the way, being 26-all after 28 ends then 30-all after 35 ends. Col drew shot with his last bowl to win 31-30.

In social bowls, Loretta, John and Brad defeated Tracey, Will and Trevor 20-12 while Judy, Julie and Ville defeated Peter, Roy and Roland 23-7.

Next week’s bowls: Publicans Day will be held on Sunday; if all names can be in by Saturday afternoon please to make it a lot easier to start somewhere near time. The start time is 9am.

Tambo Arts Council turns 50

This picture is of ‘My Fair Lady’ produced in 1979; from left, Jenny Donaldson, Patrina McLeod, Joy Noble and Bob Martin. The show ran for three nights in Tambo and then toured to Charleville for a night in the Charleville Town Hall.

THE Tambo Arts Council was founded in 1960 by community members starving for entertainment and cultural experiences.

The early years saw the committee arranging and funding concerts of international calibre including pianists and the Russian ballet. Local talent was utilised to present musical performances; ‘The King and I’, ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’.

Affiliation with Queensland Arts Council has ensured a steady stream of varied shows and recitals interspersed with Tambo performances and amateur dramatics over the years.

Today Tambo Arts Council continues to strive to enhance and expand the artistic and cultural experiences of the Tambo community, produce the community newspaper The Grassland Whisperer and manage the exhibition program for the Grassland Art Gallery.

To celebrate half a decade the Tambo Arts Council are hosting a weekend of festivities. On Saturday, November 13, there will be a celebratory dinner with entertainment and guest speakers at the Tambo Shire Hall followed by a lunchtime exhibition opening of Metka Skrobar’s ‘Beneath Earth and Sky’ at the Grassland Art Gallery on Sunday, November 14.

FROM THE EDITORIT’S amazing to think that a Blackall resident was able to see first-hand such a massive, historical event like the canonisation of Australia’s first saint.

Some of us may have wished that we could have witnessed Mary MacKillop’s canonisation in Rome, but it was way more than a pipe dream for Fiona Russell. She felt the happiness, the patriotism of other Australians, and the joy of all nationalities. She saw the Pope, even if he was a figure in the distance, she was there. This is something that she will always remember.

It’s a great example to remind local residents, particularly our youth, that you can achieve your dream, no matter how big it is or where you live.

Fiona overcame financial and family concerns to make her dream a reality.

When you put your mind to something and totally commit to it, it is amazing what you can achieve.

It’s not long before our year 12 students will graduate from school and move into the next stage of their lives. This is the time for local residents to show encouragement and get behind our youth. It’s a significant yet stressful time in their lives.

The achievements of our youth are achievements for the Blackall-Tambo region. We should be proud of them and help them achieve the best that they can.

We wish them all the best for their future and look forward to celebrating their successes.

We also look forward to Fiona’s return to Blackall so we can hear more about her experiences in Italy.

Dear Editor,This World Teachers’ Day (October 29), what better

way could there be to show your appreciation for the hard work our children’s teachers do every day than to back the campaign to secure state schools a fair slice of the funding cake?

Our state school teachers do a fantastic job bringing a first class education within the reach of all Queensland’s children, whatever their background. But the current Federal Government funding model is starving state schools of badly needed resources and has to be changed if investment is to be directed to where it’s needed most. State schools currently receive only 35 per cent of Federal Government education funding, even though they are responsible for almost 70 per cent of enrolments. How can that be fair?

It’s time to give our state school teachers and principals the resources they need to keep building a successful and vibrant future for our state. Visit www.forourfuture.org.au and have your say now.

Steve Ryan,Queensland Teachers’ Union president

Dear Editor,This week is National Carers Week (October 17-23) –

and while the spotlight is on the army of carers Australia-wide for this week, we should remember that for many, it’s an ongoing commitment for 52 weeks of the year.

For these hidden heroes of the Australian health system, supporting a family member or friend with depression, anxiety or a related disorder can be a round-the-clock commitment.

With about one million people in Australia experiencing depression and over two million with an anxiety disorder, there are literally hundreds of thousands of carers involved.

Being a carer can have an enormous impact on a person’s relationships, work and social life, as well as their physical and mental health. Despite this, their commitment and the problems they face often go unrecognised.

Research shows that due to the constant and sometimes overwhelming nature of their roles, carers are often at greater risk of developing depression.

National Carers Week coincides with beyondblue’s Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month when we ask people to help raise awareness of these illnesses and talk openly to help reduce the stigma and assist people to seek help.

While I write to express beyondblue’s heartfelt thanks to carers, I also want to encourage them to think about how they can take good care of themselves - all year round.

beyondblue’s free resources to help carers are available from www.beyondblue.org.au or by calling the beyondblue information line on 1300 224 636.

Our thanks and regards to all the carers across Australia this week – and year round.

Leonie Young,beyondblue CEO

The Centre Within is a practical ‘how-to’ course designed to give you the tools

and techniques to achieve what you want out of life. We talk about the problems that most people have, and explore the many ways those problems can be solved. While most people can relate to the stories and situations we talk about, participants at the course are never asked to reveal any personal details.

Presented by Helen Everingham At the BLACKALL MEMORIAL & SPORTS CLUB

Coronation Drive

Saturday, 30th October and Sunday, 31st October, 2010 9.00am to 4.00pm each day

This practical two-day course is about.....

…. feeling good …. living your dreams

…. enjoying happy relationships .... increasing your prosperity

… achieving “Peace of Mind”

The Centre Within teaches you the attitudes and techniques to achieve all of the above

Self esteem is one of the most important keys to our success and happiness. We look at why we often feel put down and inferior and how we can raise our self esteem to become more effective human beings in our relationships and in our achievements.

One of the worst things in life is not getting on with people – particularly those we love. Understanding why we do the things that stop us from having the very best relationships is vital in learning how we can effectively improve our dealings with other people.

We look at the attitudes and techniques that successful people use and learn how we can all be abundant and increase the prosperity in our lives.

We explore what stops us from having “Peace of Mind” and learn how we can work towards that magic balance that helps us achieve happiness, good health, wonderful relationships and a fulfilling life.

THE Blackall Cultural Centre will turn into “The Toy Kingdom” for one wonderful evening when Dance Blackall in association with the Blackall State School P&C present their annual concert, “The Magic Toyshop”.

They say strange things happen in the toyshop after hours. The security guards at the shop have often found things like buttons missing off the toy soldiers lying out in the open on the floor early in the morning and fairy wands scattered in unusual places…………. From little stars, fairies and butterflies floating round, Cinderella dolls

and music box dancers that come alive, to Mermaids from the water and Shirley Temple Dolls – Dance Blackall’s Magic Toyshop will truly come alive on the night of Saturday, October 30.

There will be a bar operating and hot food to purchase for dinner along with tea/coffee and a plate of goodies for dessert. Tickets can be purchased from either the Blackall State School administration or St Joseph’s Catholic School administration. Tickets will also be available on the night.
