THE small crowd, at the recent Doctors and Nurses Night, dug deep to raise thousands for a cure for cancer.
Only about 30 people attended the evening at the Prince of Wales Hotel, which included an auction of 21 items. The autographed and framed Gold Coast Titans shorts raised the most funds with the highest bid of $615.

SOMETIMES the worst conditions bring out the best in us.
This was definitely the case with Blackall resident Janelle Dickson, who after experiencing first-hand life in Africa, a third world country, is now raising funds to build a school there.

BLACKALL Junior Rugby League had a very successful finish to their season recently when players and their families attended the presentation lunch.
This year the club fielded three teams in the Central West competition, Under 8’s coached by Alan Hinds, Under 10’s coached by Dwayne Kangan and Under 12’s coached by Peter Hauff.

BLACKALL’S flooding put on a show but so did Saturday’s Springtime Festival.
Road closures stopped a number of people attending the annual festival, however, local residents still managed to raise about $13,000 for the Blackall Hospital.
Director of Nursing Frances Calleja said organisers were happy with the event, considering the wet weather.
More than 500 people raised about $21,000 for the hospital at last year’s record event. This year, only about half the number of people attended the festival.
“It was really great considering we had so much rain and roads were closed,” Frances said.
“We can now buy critical machinery that we can use for patient care,” she said. Funds raised would also be spent on the auxiliary house, which provided free accommodation for families of sick patients.
The wet weather caused a change of venue from Banks Park to the Blackall Cultural Centre but a lot of the planned festivities were still held.
Professional entertainer Mick Lindsay performed at the festival and there were a number of stalls to engage residents’ attention. Frances would like to thank the Blackall Hospital Auxiliary for hosting the Springtime Festival and community members for their support.
For more photographs from this event see page 9.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESKIT was a big Barcoo River this week here in Blackall after a 260ml fall of rain in Tambo. It certainly has been an exceptionally wet spring for Queensland in general and especially so for us here as September/October are considered our drier months; perhaps I should say can be very dry leading into summer.
I would like to say thank you to our wonderful SES team who are always ready when needed such as when the Barcoo River is in flood. The entire community appreciates your attention to safety and all the time and effort of training, which ensures the team is always ready for action.
Congratulations to the Blackall Hospital Auxiliary for their extraordinary efforts to ensure their annual fete happened despite the wet weather. The community support was evident as residents enjoyed the evening’s entertainment. I am sure the Blackall Hospital will benefit greatly from the 2010 fete.
Congratulations also to Leanne Munro who was elected the
chairman of the newly formed Blackall Common Advisory Committee. This group, with the assistance of the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council staff, will create a new Blackall Common Management Plan to ensure a sustainable future for this unique area, which we are so very fortunate to be able to use. A similar group and Management Plan have worked extremely well for the betterment of the Tambo Common and all who use it.

SOMETIMES the worst conditions bring out the best in us.
This was definitely the case with Blackall resident Janelle Dickson, who after experiencing first-hand life in Africa, a third world country, is now raising funds to build a school there.
“I felt joy living in what we would think as absolute deprivation,” Janelle said.
“The joy of the people and the warmth in the love that they showed to us; I think that’s one aspect I would always remember,” she said.
“There were many life-changing moments.”
Janelle said they faced massive challenges on a daily basis like the issues of poverty and the spread
of diseases but it was education that was close to her heart.
As a guidance officer in 10 schools in the Longreach region, Janelle felt education was the area where she could help those in Africa. “It’s my social responsibility,” she said.
She wants to raise $3000 to construct a school building that would fit a library/classroom in it.
Janelle has raised about half of this amount already.
She is planning a “Plates for Poverty” fundraising event to be held in Blackall in early November. Look in upcoming editions of the Barcoo Independent as details become available.
To make a donation contact Janelle Dickson on 0458 574 275.

Ross the champion againROSS Browning is the “A” Grade Singles Champion for the eighth time. Ross and last year’s winner Gumby Chapman had a very good final on Sunday; the scores close all the way. After 27 ends, Ross led by only 23-21, but managed to edge away to win 31-24. In sets of nine ends, Gary Whitfield and Ron Robinson had a very close first two sets, with Gary winning 9-7 then Ron levelling, winning 8-6 in the second. Ron then not firing a shot in the third set, losing 10-1. In trebles, Michael and Col Spinks with Dally Holden were a bit too strong for Loretta, Roy Black and Wayne Richardson, winning 22-9 but Loretta was the best player on the green with about 14 touchers. Next week’s bowls: “B” Singles: G. Whitfield v C. Pfingst (Spotter T. Hayward); Handicap Singles Final: R. Browning v M. Pfingst (Spotter Gumby). Publicans Fun Day will be held on October 24 with all players and nominations welcome.

Blackall digs deep for cancer fundraiser
ABOVE: Jo Sharpe, Lauren Stapleton and Alison Smith ‘sick’ at the recent Doctors and Nurses Night.
Prince of Wales Hotel manager Neville Dolinski said only one of the two autographed Adam Harvey DVDs went up for auction with the remaining item to be donated to another worthy cause. The Doctors and Nurses Night, along with the two earlier events, the Girls Night Out and the Blokes Afternoon, raised a total of $3450.20 for cancer research.

The committee this year is: - president Priscilla Dendle, secretary Lavina Anderson, vice presidents Luke Johnson and Jodie Meehan-Johnson, treasurer Donna Richardson, Thursday Night Club race secretary Jane Caralon, registrar Zoe Johnson, fundraising coordinator – position unfilled, catering officer – position unfilled, (at present Lavina Anderson and Donna Richardson are looking after this area, if you can help by taking on this position it would be greatly appreciated). Zoe Johnson has been wonderful enough to continue assisting the club in all areas with her many years of knowledge and expertise. Katherine and Garry Dendle and Zoe Johnson were also made life members.
Blackall Amateur Swimming Association would like to invite swimmers and non-swimmers of any age or ability to join their club. They offer comradeship, fun and support in attaining your goals and a chance for a swim for fitness, leisure, fun and competition. The objectives of the club are to encourage all levels of swimming skills, provide opportunities to develop your swimming skills, focus on teamwork and friendship, encourage self discipline and self motivation as a means of excelling and achieving your goals and to have fun whilst swimming or socialising at all times.
On club nights swimmers must nominate before 5.45pm at the official desk so that club can commence at 6pm sharp. The club can only run weekly club nights with the assistance of parents. They ask for your help in regards to timekeeping, marshalling, recording, lane ropes amongst other jobs. If you would like more information please contact president Priscilla Dendle on 4657 6626.
BASA held its first club night on Thursday, October 7. President Priscilla presented three awards from the Swimming Australia Junior Excellence Awards Program. This program recognises, rewards and encourages children aged from nine to 13 years who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia. There are four levels of achievement: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Green. Jamie Johnson, 12, who is away at boarding school this year, achieved “Green”, which was accepted by her mother Zoe Johnson. Pagen Arnold, 10, also achieved “Green” and Josh McErlean received a “Gold”. BASA would like to take this opportunity to congratulate these students.
Thursday night was a sprint night where children swam 15m, 25m or 50m in each stroke. Due to the weather, numbers were down, but those that swam had an enjoyable night and are looking forward to a good season. Swimming was all finished by about 7.15pm, just in time before some light rain fell. They had a birthday cake for Todd Richardson, who unfortunately left with Zane early and missed his own cake! Thanks Todd, Donna said you wouldn’t mind us eating your cake. Happy Birthday Todd!
Visitors and new members are most welcome, hope to see you at Swim Club.

RAMS at last week’s Terrick Merino sale averaged $884, the first time the Keogh-owned stud has passed the $800 barrier, and all 89 rams on offer were sold.
Mark Walker from Rosedale, Longreach paid the top price of $2100, also a record price for Rick and Jenny Keogh.
These results were despite the number of registered buyers decreasing from 18 to 16.
Elders northern wool sales manager, Maurie McNeill said those attending were there to buy.
“The improved price this year can be attributed to a number of factors, none more so than the qualities the rams displayed on the back of better seasonal conditions and excellent preparation,” he said.
“The draft of rams were very well grown and displayed good carcass traits as well as the usual bright, soft handling, well nourished wools.”
The rams were presented straight out of the paddock, which the stud regards as an important criterion.
Average prices for Terrick Merinos have steadily increased from $520 in 2004 and $567 two years later to $745 in 2008.
The top price in 2004 was $850, and in 2008 it went to $1600.
Volume purchasers last week included Peter and Thumper Clark, Longreach; David and Heather Morton, Isisford; the Wood family, Blackall; Peter and Donna Batt, Jundah; Brian and Gaye Tully, Quilpie; Bill and Sally Cripps, Blackall, and Peter and Lorna Evans, Blackall.
Support was also received from the Picone brothers, Blackall; McKay and McKay, Longreach; Graham Moffatt, Longreach; and David and Genevieve Counsell, Barcaldine.
Rick Keogh said the smaller crowd had been a concern but felt that was more to do with the wet weather and people getting behind with their work than any lack of interest in sheep.
“Merino ewe lambs are making as much as fat lambs at the moment and there’s a bit of upside in the wool market so it’s a very positive outlook,” he said.
“Most things are cyclical; I always thought things would turn round for us. There’s a lack of sheep in Australia, full stop and there will be for some time yet.”
