Meetings held in both Blackall and Tambo for a SWOT Analyses (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of tourism in the Blackall Tambo region were attended by those interested in the creation of the Blackall Tambo Regional Council tourism plan which will take us on into the future, ensuring a structured approach to offering the visitors to our area the very best tourism experience we can possibly offer! We want to make sure they return time and time again.

A meeting in Isisford of representatives of the department of Transport and Main Roads, Barcaldine Regional Council, Barcoo Shire, Longreach Regional Council and Blackall Tambo Regional Council discussed the progress made over the first four years of the Jericho to Yaraka road project and the necessity to plan for the progress of the work for the next six years of the project. Everyone agreed on the necessity to begin a campaign to ensure adequate funding is forthcoming to complete the entire project recognizing a significant shortfall in the railway funding. It proved to be a very interesting meeting for Manager of Works Paul Martin and myself, meeting all parties in this collaborative arrangement which will benefit our entire region.

Congratulations to the Blackall Magpies on their wonderful win on Saturday evening. I am sure it was a fun night all round.

Another winner in the Blackall Tambo Region was Tidy Towns’ Young Legends State Award winner Ronan Robinson! I was delighted to be able to accept the award on Ronan’s behalf at the Tidy Towns State Awards presentation dinner here in Brisbane during the time of the Local Government Association of Queensland State Conference. I was also able to accept a thirty year certificate of participation in the Tidy Towns competition on behalf of Tambo. Hard to believe that the awards have been going for so long bringing a great sense of community pride to our entire state.

The Local Government State Conference has proved to be an interesting one for the Blackall Tambo Regional Councilors attending, Deputy Mayor Peter Skewes and Councilor Sally Cripps, with six resolutions in the conference agenda. All were successfully endorsed by the delegates voting on the issues presented. Guest speakers from the city of Toronto in Canada and Thames Coromandel District Council, New Zealand, both female, presented the most interesting addresses on the solutions they have implemented to negate the problems of waste management and climate change. It has been great to catch up with many friends and associates in local government statewide.

Blackall Amateur Swimming

Association

Notice of Annual General Meeting

5th September 2009Commencing at 10.00am

Blackall Multipurpose Sport and Rec Centre

All interested families are encouraged to attend to ensure a successful 2009/10 season.

WOOROOLAH rural fire brigade first officer Garry Hauff says every farmer should be prepared for this summer’s bushfire season by creating an electronic property map.

“This year is going to be a problem for us,” Mr Hauff said.

“Thank goodness we don’t have the hazards around us like in Victoria – most houses have clear land around them.

“But I have still been on everyone to give me a map of their property.”

Mr Hauff made this suggestion at a free property computer mapping workshop run by AgForce Projects through funding from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country at Blackall last week.

Mr Hauff has been with the Wooroolah rural fire brigade for 20 years. He said the approaching fire season is shaping up to be one of the worst he has seen; with a build-up of vegetation combined with an early, hot start to summer.

“If I’m in charge of a fire, I have to have a map showing where I can get water and where tracks are,” Mr Hauff said.

“Knowing where the flush valves are in irrigation lines is handy too because you know where you can go to fill up your truck. One thousand litres doesn’t take long to go through.”

AgForce Projects spatial project officers showed the 16 attendees at the Blackall workshop how to create a property map with an emergency management plan layer.

It also went through how to create a grazing land management plan and map and record a property’s infrastructure, vegetation and water points.

Blackall cattle grazier Bruce Alexander of Warringah marvelled at how easy and inexpensive mapping software and GPS devices have become.

“Just like a new car, they have more features now,” Mr Alexander said.

“I went around years ago with a GPS worth about $20,000 and now with this new mapping I should be able to put the coordinates to use better.”

Free upcoming workshops in the Blackall region are being held at Alpha next month on Tuesday, September 8; Barcaldine on

Wednesday, September 9; and Aramac on Thursday, September 10.

Workshops are open to all producers. Places are limited and participants should register by calling 3238 6039 or emailing [email protected].

Rural fire-fighters say property maps will help this bushfire season

Garry Hauff (right) and his son Geoff and daughter-in-law Kylie stressed the importance of a property map to prepare for the bushfire season at a workshop in Blackall last week.

THIS year marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Mary MacKillop; foundress of the Sisters of St Joseph who established schools in Augathella, Tambo and Blackall. Two Sisters of St Joseph from Quilpie, Sr Anne Hoey and Sr Margaret Andersen, visited these communities to retell the Mary MacKillop story.

As the parishes of Augathella and Tambo and their priests, Fr Peter Doohan and Fr Matthew Moloney, gathered to celebrate Eucharist, the Sisters retold the story and the Josephite connection with the communities.

In Blackall the Sisters were welcomed by Principal Tim Franzmann, students and staff of St Joseph’s school. With story, song and prayer they retold the story led by Sr Margaret, who had taught at St Joseph’s in 1986. Gathered in the Mary MacKillop room of St Joseph’s school, parishioners and the school community also recalled the place that the school has in the Josephite story along the Barcoo.

BLACKALL walked away with around 21 medals from the Sunset Carnival in Longreach last weekend. All students from Blackall’s St Joseph’s and the Blackall State School gave it their best shot at the carnival with temperatures reaching 37 degrees and competing against children who are training on a regular basis.

Rana Smith competed in the boys 11 years events with medals for first in the 100 metres and 200 metres. In his heats on Saturday he blitzed the field with very good performances. Rana was selected to run in the handicapped event with runners who were placed first in their age groups. With some runners starting at 100 metres and others at 80 metres, Rana was leading the race with 30 metres to go when the back markers caught him and he finished in sixth place. Rana was also selected in the North West team and will compete in Brisbane later this year.

Sophie Negus competed in the girls 10 year events, placing second in the 100 metre, 200 metre and 800 metre events. In the 100m Sophie was beaten by just half a second and by just

three quarters of a second in the other two events.

Bonnie Lawrence competed in the girls 18 years 8oo metre event and ran well to place second. Bonnie also finished third in the 200 metre and 100 metre events, coming home strong in the last 50 metres of all her events.

Dylan Dolinski competed in the boys 16 years discus to place first with a throw of 35.960 metres. He also threw 11.660 metres in the shotput to take out second place. After being unable to reach these distances all week, to finish with two medals was a good reward for Dylan who gave it everything on the day.

Sam Fletcher placed third in the 100 metre event and third in the long jump and shotput for boys 10 years. He had some tough competition but did his school and Blackall proud.

Will Butler jumped to first place in the long jump, second in high jump and second in the 100 metre and 200 metre sprints for boys 12 years. Will was unlucky in his sprints, only missing out on first place by around half a second.

Cholette Smith placed third in the girls 15 years shotput, waiting

around all day on Saturday to compete in the 37 degree heat.

Andrew Davison competed in the boys 11 years shotput on Sunday morning.

Kate Baillie finished a close fourth in the girls 11 years 100 metre final on Saturday afternoon just missing out on a medal.

Also competing over the weekend was Kyle McPaul in the triple jump where he placed third and picked up a third in the 100 metre and unplaced in the 200 metre event.

Letter to the EditorBlackall, please take note. There

is a young man in this town, raised by a single mum, who has beaten all schools in the Central West in his division of athletics.

As a runner of 100 metres and 200 metres, he is the first to be chosen from Blackall in the last 10 years.

As I have stated before, he comes from a single parent family and needs Blackall’s support. There is an account opened at the Commonwealth Bank in the name of Terana Smith. Get behind him Blackall; the boy wants to run in the Olympics. That is his one wish. Get behind him.

RETIRED mechanic from Blackall, Kevin Harlow, took out the major prize in the Deaf Lottery, at its draw on July 2.

The lottery, drawn six times a year, has a first prize of $350,000.

A regular visitor to Toowoomba, Mr Harlow is a friend of Pam Jukes of Clifford Gardens who has been selling tickets in the Deaf Lottery for more than 20 years.

“Pam told me she was going to sell me a winning ticket,” Mr Harlow said.

“She got it right.”

Having spent 40 years as a tradesman, Mr Harlow said the winnings were a great retirement boost for he and his wife, Sharyn.

Mr Harlow chose a new Toyota L a n d C r u i s e r with some of his winnings and would take the rest of the value of

the prize in gold bullion. He said he planned to spend

some of the winnings on a caravan so he and his wife could tour around Australia.

Deaf Services Queensland uses the proceeds of the lottery to help deaf community members to live sustainable lifestyles and to assist the hearing community to learn about sign language and deaf culture.

THE much anticipated rugby league match between the Blackall Magpies and Tambo Eagles was played last Saturday evening before a large crowd of supporters in mild conditions at the Blackall showgrounds.

The game was the first of two between Blackall and Tambo which have been on the drawing board for some time as neither town was able to form a team for this year’s Central West competition. The second game is to be played in Tambo on a date still to be decided on.

Blackall put the first points on the board on Saturday night after some good hit-ups and solid defence from both sides, with a try to Ady Walker, converted by Matt McLane.

Further tries to Blackall were scored by Matt Wemyss, Beau Frame, Matt McLane (3), Jeremy Barron, Shaun Lindenburg, Guy Elliot and Tutu Ratima. Matt McLane landed a further six conversions to take the final tally to 54 points.

Tambo’s tries were scored by

Malcolm Johnson and Cam Crozier with both conversions unsuccessful resulting in a total of 8 points at the final whistle.

While there were some familiar faces on the Blackall team including Andrew Lloyd, Josh Duncan, Guy Elliot, Jeremy Barron, Mitch Horsten, Ady Walker, Lachlan Krieg, Blake Carolan, Matt Ganes, Andy and Dave Picone and Matt and Mark Wemyss; there were also many new players out on the field.

New to Blackall this year, Tim Franzmann is the principal of St Joseph’s Catholic school. Tim played rugby union during his school years and later switched codes to play rugby league at university.

Tim Ludgate works for Grant Daniel Long and played junior rugby for the Pittsworth Danes and union while at college.

Matt McLane comes from Inverell and played league as a junior and senior first grade levels with the Inverell Hawks and Tingah Tigers. He

by Townsville University and R o c k h a m p t o n North’s seniors.

Beau Frame is an Inverell boy currently employed by Landmark

Blackall. Beau played junior league for Inverell, followed by union at St Joseph’s Nudgee College in Brisbane in the 1st XI, and senior league with the Inverell Hawks 1st grade team.

Chris Neville also comes from Inverell and is currently working at Swan Hill station. He played junior league for Inverell juniors and both union and league at Farrer Ag College.

Shaun Lindenburg and Steven Catchinda are with the WORC here in Blackall. Shaun played junior footy in Brisbane, while Steve has played previously in North Queensland.

Rick Woolley originally hails from England and has played union before. Rick now works as a carpenter in Blackall where he has lived for approximately a year. Andrew Otswald is from Rockhampton and played league at St Brendan’s in Yeppoon. He currently operates Reo Plant Hire and is working in the Blackall area. Dane Claydon and Dan Korff both work at Ravensbourne in Blackall. Dan is a Coonabarabran boy who played junior union and later senior union with the HayCutters at Hay. Dane comes from Miles and played league at St Brendan’s in Yeppoon. Dan donned a Tambo jersey on the day to help boost their numbers, along with Paul (Fudgie) Allen who has previously played for the Blackall Magpies.

The game was refereed by Eddie Austin, assisted by linesmen Dan Burton and Peter Ward. The Blackall Magpies are grateful to the people who helped with the gate, canteen, BBQ, bar, strapping, trainers, the Magpie mascot and Junior Magpies for the loan of their gear.
