JOIN LENTEN ROSARY CHALLENGE FOR WORLD PEACEBALLSTON SPA Our Lady Queen of Peace Prayer Group at St. Marys Church in Ballston Spa invites you to be part of a Lenten Rosary Challenge for World Peace from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. The Rosary Telethon will run throughout the 40 days of Lent until April 5. Were in-viting everyone to join us in pledging to pray one Mystery of the Rosary each day during this time, said Josie Uhlinger. Our goal is to reach 33,000 Rosaries prayed to Our Lady imploring her sons divine mercy to save this world that is now in crisis. Noting the Rosary may be prayed at any time at your convenience, individually or with your family or friends, Mrs. Uh-linger said the key is to pray the Rosary devoutly from the heart, as Our Lady instructed the children at Fatima to do in 1917. A display showing weekly progress of completed Rosaries will be posted on the bulletin at the back of the Church together with a pamphlet titled Pray the Rosary Daily -- which details how to say the Rosary. The community is also invited to join in Our Lady Queen of Peace prayer meetings on March 17 and 31. For more information, Josie Uhlinger at 885-9620 or Cheryl Smith at 587-9856.
MENTORS NEEDED FOR LOCAL NON-PROFITCAPITAL REGION Spring is coming and with it a time to renew, re-group, and re-prioritize. What better way than to begin a new volunteer oppor-tunity! I am I can, a mentoring program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the program. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your student on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the students life. The organization is currently looking for men-tors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to sup-port girls in Shenendehowa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please visit our website at www.iamicanachieve.org or contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 688-3010 x102 or at Avon@scherffi nsurance.com.

Peter Alessandro
As you may know, my firm markets personal insurance for life, disability, health and long term care. In addition, we provide professional tax consulting and preparation of business income tax returns, including trusts and estates.
After working thirty-three years for the New York State Judicial Branch in the financial division and serving twenty-eight years in the U.S. Army on active and reserve duty, I had the opportunity to be the principal in my own business and chose that over a traditional retirement.
My objective is that clients could be better served once their needs and goals are identified and solutions developed from among the companies that meet stringent requirements to do business in New York State. By using cost and benefit analysis, clients can be better served by obtaining the most value for what they are willing to spend for voluntary benefits. This can ef-
fectively be accomplished by brokering to multiple companies rather than dealing with just one company. Similarly, no client should pay more taxes than required and it is essential that all credits or refunds be
provided in spite of the complexity of the tax code. There are income tax free provisions available and some penalties of the Affordable Care Act can be avoided, but they are not automatic. Professional advice for tax preparation can be rewarding.
My business philosophy is to do what I enjoy most, which is helping people. Many years ago when my older brother was ill one Saturday morning, he asked me to deliver orders for a butcher shop where he worked. That was my first job at 13 years old and since that time I have built up a lifetime of qualifications to serve clients. I am fully licensed as a NYS insurance broker for over 30 years. My BBA degree was earned from Bernard Baruch College in NYC in 1969 as well as an accounting certificate from Siena College in 2003. The Enrolled Agent designation, which allows taxpayer representation in civil matters before the IRS, was earned in 2013.
If you need any assistance- in the areas discussed above or simply would like to discuss your particular situation, feel free to contact me at 518-250-0913 or e-mail [email protected].

2015 PROJECT EASTER BUNNY CAPITAL DISTRICT Floydwarriors.com Helping Families Cope with Cancer, One Household at a Time is very pleased to announce its 6th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. Floy-dwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan began this effort after experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one bas-ket up for her son while in the middle of chemotherapy treat-ment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012, 225 in 2013 and 290 in 2014. Our goal is to collect enough new small toys and candy for 350 baskets this year and add yet another oncology center to our list of glad recipients. HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Jasper is a Boxer/Hound mix about 3 years old who weighs 40 pounds. He is a fun loving high energy dog! Jasper loves to run around and play with other dogs, go for car rides,
and meet new people. Because of his high energy it is best he is with older children. Jasper would do well with another dog and a fenced-in back-

meet his new family. Julius is a talker that just loves to tell you all about
his day - the toy mice he caught, the evasive string under the bed....and his
long sleepy naps. Julius is very affectionate with people and with his fellow foster kitty
housemates. Julius and his sisters were rescued from a horse barn in Troy and are so happy to be warm indoors. If you are looking for a sibling pair Julius has two cute orange sisters Kasia and Katrina. Julius has so much personality and is an
amazingly enjoyable little man. Julius is great with other cats, dogs and would be fine with children.
Whoever adopts this little guy will be so lucky!Julius is ~ 4.5 months old as of 2/1/2015, neutered, up to date
on his shots and negative for FIV/FeLV.For more information, please contact us at 518-428-2994.

Leigh-Poes Pups
Darla
These two pups ended up in a high kill shelter as an owner turn in. Can you
imagine. They are sweeties and beautiful to boot. They
were born on New Years Eve and are about 9-10 weeks old. They have been given shots, wormed and vet checked.
This is Darla! We pulled her in her final hours before she was
facing the unthinkable. She is simply stunning and absolutely loves attention. She is approximately a 15
week old Shep/Boxer/Pit mix that has had her vaccinations, health certificate, de-wormed,
and more. She seems to be very smart and would make a great addition to any family.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten. The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or con-tacting [email protected]. VFW #358 MEETINGS

House website at www.fisherhouse.org.
For most of us there are plenty of vegetable and flower seedlings available at the garden center to choose from in spring so you may not feel the need to start any seeds. However, there may be a tomato variety that you want to try that youve never seen available as a seedling, or an uncommon annual flower that you want to try out. In this case, youll need to start your own. But howand when do we start our seeds? For instance, a tomato seed pack might say, For best results, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting time. The beginner will say, Yeah, well what day is that? The average last frost date for the Albany Airport is May 7th. That date seems wildly optimistic to me. We often get frosts after May 7th. For our area, I think May 15th - 20th makes more sense, and theres no reason to rush planting only to risk a late frost. Tomatoes and peppers stall when temperatures go below 50F, so waiting to plant them often results in an earlier harvest than from plants subjected to too many cold nights early in the season. In my garden in the Glenville Hills, I generally shoot for planting the week before Memorial Day. T he next step is to get a calendar and combine the information on the seed packs to come up with a logical schedule for starting our seeds indoors. First mark Planting Week (May 15th-20th) on your calendar. Then mark the week previous to Planting Week 1 week meaning one week before planting. Mark the week previous to that 2 weeks and so on until youve marked up to 10 weeks before planting. 10 weeks before planting should end up being second week of March (6th - 12th). Now look at the information on the seed packs to see how many weeks before planting we need to get the seeds started indoors. For instance, heres the info on the pack of eggplant seeds: Now that weve got a calendar custom made for our growing season, we can easily figure out when to start these seeds indoors...sometime in mid-March. You can tape the seed packs to your calendar on the week that they need to get sown or just write them into the correct week on the calendar. There are a few, like onions and leeks, that need to get started 10 weeks before our frost-free planting date. The real flurry of seed starting occurs between 6 and 8 weeks before planting. On the calendar, thats the last couple of weeks of March and the first week of April. There are some seeds that only need to be started a only two or three weeks prior to planting week, like theses zinnias, so you really need to read the directions on the seed packs. You might be thinking, Why not start them as early as possible so the seedlings will be further along when I plant them? If you have a greenhouse you might get away with that. Most of us are starting our seeds on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights. Space is at a premium and the larger plants crowd each other and get leggy as they compete for the light. Leggy, spindly transplants will struggle to survive once they get outside. Its better to have smaller, sturdier plants when its time to put them in the ground, so follow the directions on the seed pack and youll have the right size plant at the right time. There are plenty of vegetables that dont need to wait for planting weekto get started from seed directly in the garden. Peas seeds like to get planted at the beginning of April as soon as the soil can get worked. Spinach, chard, radishes, potatoes (from seed potatoes) and many others can also be planted before our frost free planting date in mid-May. Indeed, most of what we call cool weather crops can produce 2 crops per season; one from an early sowing for early summer harvest and another mid-summer sowing for a fall crop. This is something that new gardeners need to understand. I think many new gardeners have the belief that you plant in spring and harvest in the fall. This is true for some vegetables like potatoes and some of the larger tomato types. The real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from these crops that we seed directly in the garden. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Once you go through a season with well timed plantings youll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. Learn to read the information on the seed packs and trust the seeds. This is the way to really make you garden pay maximum dividends. Thanks for the read.
