HOST FAMILIES NEEDEDCAPITAL DISTRICT - The Doane Stuart School in Rensselaer, NY is in their second year of their international student pro-gram. The school recently announced it will be bringing in even more students in the fall. So the school is looking for host families within a 30-minute radius of the school. Most of the current students plan to graduate from Doane Stuart and hopefully get into an American college or university. The schools have noted that being so far from home and doing something so important can be a lot of pressure on these students, and that a good host family can make all of the dif-ference to these students. The students look to their hosts and peers to learn about American culture. For instance, many of the students who have never seen snow have taken an interest in snowboarding and also snow tubing. The stu-dents are from various parts of China and have very diverse interests. Some of the students have become very interested in basketball and play on the high school team and others have formed bonds based on a mutual appreciation of video games. The students have even created a Chinese Club at the school to teach American students about Chinese customs and traditions. To learn more about the program visit www.gphomestay.com or e-mail [email protected]

We call it “A Night of Craft Beer and Military Gear!” Come and sample dozens of different specialty beers and wines. Many vendors will be represented, such as Druthers, Steadfast, Blue-line Brewery, Ledge Rock Hill, Frederick Wildman, and more. Talk to the vendors who produce them locally and learn what makes them unique. Find a new favorite beer. Travel back in history as you stroll through the New York State Military Museum. Visit our great new exhibits, like our Civil War exhibit, the G.I. Joe exhibit and more. There will be tons of local restaurants providing deli-cious food for the evening: Maestro’s at the Van Dam, Merry Monk, Druthers, and more. Hundreds of people joined us last year, and we know that this year will be a sell-out as well. We’d like to invite you this amazing event. This is a fundraiser, and all proceeds will go to the Friends of the New York State Military Museum and the Saratoga Springs Lions Club. We look forward to seeing you there. NYS Mili-tary Museum, 61 Lake Av-enue, Saratoga Springs. Tick-ets $35 advance, $40 at door. Must be at least 21 years old to attend. www.friendsoft-henysmilitarymuseum.com

TIPS ON SAVING MONEY WITH AN HVAC SYSTEM

(NAPS)—There’s good news for homeowners who want to re-duce their energy costs. With a little bit of homework, savings are possible.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most Americans are paying more for electricity and natural gas than they did four years ago, with the average household utility bill now about $1,900 each year. And, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

To reduce these costs, the experts at the Luxaire® brand of

heating and air conditioning rec-ommend the following:

• Adjust your thermostat. By raising your thermostat just a few degrees in mild temperatures and lowering it in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating and cool-ing system work less to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Programming your thermostat to accommodate your family’s time away from home and sleeping schedules will also help to ensure that your system is operating only when you need it.

• Install a dehumidifi er. Humidity can make the air feel hot-ter and heavier in warm weather. By removing the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavily on your heating and cooling system to make the air comfortable.

• Perform regular maintenance. Clean air fi lters, seal any duct leaks and make sure the areas around your system are clear of obstructions. According to the EPA, improper insula-tion can reduce system effi ciency by up to 30 percent.

• Have your existing home comfort system inspected and serviced by a qualifi ed technician. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak effi ciency. A knowledgeable technician will also be able to recommend a new, more effi cient replacement system, such as ENERGY STAR®–qualifi ed equipment that can help you save money on energy bills.

• Learn more. To learn more about effi cient products that can help you save money and energy, or to fi nd a heating and cooling contractor, visit www.luxaire.com.

According to the Department of Energy, heating and cool-ing accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

HOME PROJECTS PERFECT FOR SPRINGThe rejuvenating spirit of spring makes this beloved season an ideal time for homeowners to take stock of their homes and properties and address any issues that arose during the winter. While some homes make it through winter unscathed, the harsh weather of the year’s coldest season can add several tasks to homeowners’ springtime to-do lists.

While some projects are best left to the professionals, others can be tackled even by those homeowners with little or no DIY experience. The following are a handful of projects tailor-made for spring.

Inspect the gutters

Gutters tend to bear the brunt of harsh winter weather, and come spring gutters are in need of inspection if not repair. Winter winds, snow and heavy rainfall can compromise the eff ec-tiveness of gutters, which can easily accumulate debris and detach from homes during winter storms. In addition, gutters sometimes develop leaks over the winter months. As a result, homeowners should conduct a careful inspection of their gutters come the spring, being sure to look for leaks while clearing the gutters of debris and reattaching gutters that might have become detached from the home on windy winter days and nights. When reattaching loose gutters, make sure the downspouts are draining away from the foundation, as gutters that are not draining properly can cause damage to that foundation and possibly lead to fl ooding.

Take stock of roof shingles

Much like its gutters and downspouts, a home’s roof can suf-fer signifi cant damage over the course of a typical winter. Shingles may be lost to harsh winter winds and storms, so homeowners should examine the roof to determine if any shingles were lost (lost shingles might even be lying around the property) or suff ered damage that’s considerable enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal on shingles, especially those that suff ered signifi cant damage during the winter. If left unchecked or unaddressed, prob-lems with damaged shingles can quickly escalate into larger issues when spring rains and summer sun inevitably arrive, so homeowners should prioritize fi xing or replacing damaged shingles as quickly as possible.

Check for freeze damage

Frozen temperatures can be hard on humans and homes alike, but unlike humans who can stay inside when temperatures dip below freezing, homes are forced to withstand the ele-ments throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced.

Examine the lawn for low spots

Once a lawn has thawed out, homeowners can patrol their properties looking for low spots in the yard or even low spots within spitting distance of the home’s foundation. Such spots increase the likelihood of flooding. Flooding near a home’s foundation increases the risk of potentially costly damage, while low spots on the lawn that go ignored can make great breeding grounds for insects, including mosquitoes, when the weather warms up. When low spots are detected, fill them in with compacted soil. Compacted soil can prevent spring rains from flooding a yard or damaging a home’s foundation.

Assessing potential property damage is a rite of passage for homeowners in the spring. Though some damage is significant, oftentimes even novice DIYers can work their homes and properties back into shape in time to enjoy spring and summer.

RECOGNIZING TERMITE DAMAGEHome ownership can be an unending series of adventures, especially for those homeowners who love good home improvement projects. Some projects are fun and improve the value of a home instantly, while others are undertaken to address a potentially serious issue.

Discovering that termites are taking up residence where you live can be disconcerting, but termites are a very common occurrence. Understanding termites and recognizing the signs of termite damage early on can help homeowners reduce the havoc that such critters can wreak on their homes.

Termites are social insects that live together in colonies. These colonies eat nonstop, dining on wood and other cellulose plant matter. They also eat materials made from plants, like fab-ric and paper. According to the National Pest Management Association, termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage a year. Studies show that queen termites can live up to decades under ideal climate conditions while workers and soldiers live approximately one to two years.

While there are many varieties of termites, all are silent destroyers capable of chewing un-detected through housing structures. To eradicate termites, homeowners must first identify the insects and then contact a termite management specialist to address the pest problem.

Spotting termites

Termites may not always be visible. Subterranean termite homes are usually formed in soil, where the termites build elaborate tunnel systems that channel through to above-ground food sources. Drywood and dampwood termites may live within the wood they consume and be undetectable until the wood collapses or rots away. Homeowners often realize they have a termite problem when they witness swarming termites. At this point there already may be a mature colony at work damaging a home. Swarming, winged termites form in a mature, established colony. Winged termites emerge and fly off looking for mates. Afterward they will locate a new breeding site and form another colony, potentially spreading infestations through multiple locations. Winged termites are attracted to light and can be seen by win-dows and doors in spring.

Other signs of termites include accumulation of soil or dirt at the base of wood structures or

the foundation of a home. There also may be fissures or cracks near wood surfaces. Some-times “frass” or termite droppings can be seen. They appear as rough, granulated sawdust.

Covered mud tubes, or channels of mud leading from the soil up the foundation of a home, are indicative of the presence of termites. Even if termites are no longer present in these tubes, that does not mean the termites have moved on. They simply may have chosen a new path to your home.

Keeping termites away

Once termites have been identified, it is time to eliminate them. This means getting rid of water and food sources that are close to a home.

* Repair leaky faucets and other water drips in and around the house.

* Keep gutters and downspouts clean.

* Seal entry points around water and utility lines or pipes.

* Divert water away from the foundation.

* Keep lumber, firewood or paper away from the foundation of the home.

* Clear away stumps and tree debris.

* Prevent untreated wood from contacting the soil.

Treating termites

It is very difficult for homeowners to get rid of termites by themselves. Very often they require the work of professionals. A termite exterminator will conduct a visual inspection of a home and property and may do extensive testing involving expensive acoustic or infrared equip-ment to probe the soil beneath the house.

Depending on the species of termite, the exterminator will suggest various treatments. These may include the application of pesticides and making areas around the home less hospitable to termites. Severely damaged wood may need to be removed and replaced.

Termites are problematic in many areas of the world. These insects often stay hidden and do serious damage that can cost homeowners a fortune. Treating termites promptly is essential.

HOME TIPIf there is a custom tile or specifi c design that you real-ly like that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen or bathroom, think about us-ing it as an accent instead. Rely on less expensive tiles for much of the room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want. The fi nished project will look high-end, but you will likely have stayed within your budget. You also can save money by shopping at a re-use center or one that sells remnants and leftover ma-terials from larger jobs. For example, it’s possible to fi nd a piece of marble or granite that would fi t perfectly as a countertop in a bathroom.

9 WAYS TO IMPROVE CURB APPEAL

Homeowners who want their homes to make strong fi rst impressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes with strong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcoming feel to all visitors. Improving curb appeal need not be expensive, and the following are a handful of ways to improve the appear-ance of your home.

1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one with a custom design. This helps the home stand out from other properties in the neighborhood.

2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border be-tween the driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat and well kept.

3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting. Out-door lighting also makes properties safer to traverse at night.

4. Clean a home’s exterior to remove mildew or discolorations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other outdoor elements.

5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonal color. Homeowners without the time to plant can consider contain-

er gardens, which don’t take much time to assemble but still add appeal to a home’s exterior.

6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to restore color.

7. Add shutters and accent trim to a home’s exterior to im-prove on the beauty of the house.

8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stain to an existing fence.

9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways to make entryways more impressive and inviting.

THE BASICS OF CLEANING WINDOWS

After a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from fi nding its way into a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on multiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably.

* Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows.

* Vacuum windowsills and tracks fi rst to remove a good deal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them.

* Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean windows. The squeegee helps to prevent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.

* Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineff ective.

* Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.

* A mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.

* Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

GET IN THE ZONE(NAPS)—You may be better able to win the race for (storage) space with your closet, if you heed a few hints.

Although everyone’s closet storage dilemmas vary, a systematic method of organizing your stuff can lead to the highest level of effi ciency. Besides, when your closet is clutter free, your mornings can run more smoothly, giving you the right mind-set to tackle the day.

• As you begin to sort through the contents of your closet, remember the 80/20 rule: You wear 20 percent of your clothes 80 percent of the time. The rest just takes up valuable, reach-able space.

• Arrange your collection by category, grouping shirts, pants, suits, dresses and so on. De-pending on the nature of your ward- robe, you can also separate casual clothes from those you wear to work or on special occasions.

• Add a center tower of shelving on each wall for frequently used items. It creates a place for folded things such as T-shirts, sweaters and denim.

• Pants, shirts and dresses can be kept on hang rods, making them easier to access.

• Upper storage shelving (above the highest hanging rod) can be for seasonal clothes you use less often as well as pieces you rarely use at all.

• Personal and activity items such as your everyday watch, wedding ring, wallet, keys and phone can stay within arm’s reach on a waist-level shelf or drawer.

• Shoes worn most often should be the easiest to reach. Keep special party shoes or rarely used running shoes on the fl oor or way up high.

• When space in other areas of the home is tight, keep luggage and other items tucked away in your walk-in. These occasional items can be hidden away and pulled out when you need them.

• Don’t underestimate the power of closet accessories. Closet systems, like those from Clos-et-Maid®, can be outfi tted with drawers, doors, cubbies, jewelry trays and pullout rods, put-ting every last inch of space to work. To learn more, go to www.closetmaid.com.

PRACTICE GARAGE AND WORKSHOP SMARTSCompleting home improvement projects on your own can be both rewarding and financially responsible. A growing number of homeowners are dabbling in do-it-yourself projects, rec-ognizing both the personal and financial rewards of such undertakings. As more and more homeowners perform their own renovations and other improvement projects, many are out-fitting their homes with state-of-the-art workshops and transforming garages into a do-it-yourselfer’s paradise.

Safety is vital in any workshop. During a typical home renovation, homeowners will use all sorts of dangerous tools and chemicals, and even the simplest mishap can result in a serious

injury. Following safety rules can reduce the risk of injury.

Know your tools

Before novice do-it-yourselfers begin working with power tools, they should familiarize themselves with their owners’ manuals and the operating in-structions. Some home-improvement retailers of-fer classes in various home renovation projects and may be able to teach tool usage. Do-it-yourselfers should consult professionals with regard to proper

tool use and safety. Do not use tools for purposes other than what the tool was intended to do. If machine guards are provided, they should be used and never removed.

Wear safety gear

Eye, ear and breathing protection are key in any workshop environment. Dust and chemical

gases may be present when working with certain products, and debris can be kicked up and enter the eyes, causing irritation or even blindness. Loud power tools can damage sensitive ears, especially when used in a contained room. Always wear goggles, sound-muffling ear-phones and dust masks when working.

Assess physical well-being

Do-it-yourselfers should never work with machinery if they are feeling sick or fatigued or while taking medication that can affect concentration or alertness. All it takes is a moment of distraction to cause an injury.

Never surprise anyone who is working with power tools and keep unnecessary people out of the workshop, where they might chat and distract others from the tasks at hand.

Factor in ergonomics

Failure to work in comfortable conditions can result in repetition injuries or muscle strain. Make the workshop as comfortable as possible. Ensure the work table is at the right height. Use a rubber mat on the floor to reduce standing fatigue. Have a stool or chair available for taking breaks.

Keep a clean shop

Power cords strewn around the workshop present a tripping hazard. They also make it pos-sible to drag sharp or heavy tools off of tables and workbenches if the cords are pulled or tripped over. A neat workshop is a safer workshop. Pay attention to where tools are kept and keep cords manageable.

Dress appropriately

Loose clothing and hair can become tangled or lodged in equipment. Do not wear jewelry.

Dress comfortably but appropriately for the workshop, being sure to wear sturdy shoes.

Lock it up

Children and pets are curious and may wander into a workshop to explore. They can become seriously ill or injured by the bevy of chemicals and tools used for common projects. Some items are flammable and sharp and should always be out of reach. Locking cabinets and drawers can keep tools inaccessible. Also warn youngsters against entering the workshop unattended.

As more people engage in do-it-yourself projects, homeowners should reacquaint them-selves with safety procedures.

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE ERECTING A FENCE Fences serve many purposes on a property and can even add visual appeal and value to a home. A fence can eff ectively delineate property borders, serve as a safety barrier and keep pets and children from wandering into the street.

According to Zillow, an online real estate database, erecting a fence on a property in an area where fences are common usually increases the value of the home, putting it in line with similar properties nearby. However, this may only be the case if the fence is installed profes-sionally and matches other fences throughout the neighborhood.

Homeowners planning to install a fence should fi rst secure a copy of their property surveys. A survey of the property is often conducted upon purchasing a home and/or when the land and home is being assessed. If you do not have a survey, you can hire a professional to con-duct one.

The survey will be handy because it clearly marks property lines. Depending on the local reg-ulations, fences may need to be installed a certain num-ber of inches or feet within the property line. Your mu-nicipality and building code offi ce will be able to guide you further as to what is le-gal. Reputable fencing com-panies that work in the com-munity should also have a good understanding of fenc-ing regulations.

A permit is typically needed to install a fence. Either your contractor or you will need to apply for the permit be-fore construction can begin.

It is best to follow the law so that the fence can be installed in a manner that is consistent with local regulations and will not be subject to potentially costly removal.

As a courtesy, speak with your neighbors about your fencing plans. The fence will separate your properties from one another, and your neighbors may have certain feelings about what they want to look at. Even if a neighbor is not sharing the cost, it is a good idea to discuss fencing with your neighbors in an eff ort to reduce the likelihood of confl ict down the road. Fences have been points of contention between neighbors, and you don’t want a previously amicable relationship to turn sour.

In some instances, neighbors will be excited about the prospect of a fence and may want to share the cost. Fencing contractors may off er discounts for multi-home installations, so it pays

to inquire with the neighbors for that reason alone.

Homes with pools may need fences as a safety precaution. Be sure they fi t the protocol. They may need self-latching/locking gates to prevent entry to the yard.

A fence can be a good investment, but homeowners must take the appropriate legal mea-sures and consider their neighbors before erecting any fences.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INDOOR AIR QUALITY

(NAPS)—The quality of the air in your home should always be a priority, but during the colder months it’s particularly important to monitor it.

The Problem

One of the most common air-quality problems in an indoor environment is particles in the air, such as allergens, viruses, bacteria and other contaminants. You have longer exposure to these particles when you’re inside for a long time in the winter, and just because you can’t see these pollut ants, it doesn’t mean they’re not there. These lightweight particles can stay suspended in midair unless properly removed, and smaller particles can sometimes cause the

most adverse health eff ects.

The human body’s immune system is able to deal with a certain level of contami-nants. However, once aller-gens or other airborne pol-lutants reach a threshold, negative health eff ects and allergic reactions can occur.

“When the temperature drops, people tend to spend more time indoors, which means more time sharing air in a confi ned area,” said Kent Kuff ner, indoor air qual-ity product manager, Carrier. “In addition, the air is noto-riously harsh and dry in the winter months, so evaluate

your home to ensure that the air quality inside is optimized no matter how severe the weather gets outside.”

What Can Be Done

Fortunately, by reducing the contaminant levels of airborne particles through proper indoor air-quality technologies, these problems may be alleviated. Here are some hints on how:

• Air purifi ers clean harmful microscopic airborne pathogens from the conditioned air and some even capture and kill them to prevent them from re-entering the home.

• Another common issue during the winter is dry air. Installing a humidifi er can help main-tain proper humidity during heating season and help you avoid itchy, cracked skin, dry nasal passages and static electricity. It may even reduce the drying that can damage wood furniture and fl ooring.

“An added benefi t to properly humidi-fi ed air is that it feels warmer than drier air,” Kuff ner said. “When the humidity is right, you can actually lower your thermo-stat during heating season and stay more comfortable while saving on utility costs.”

• Air infi ltration is also a big concern. Today’s homes are built for better energy effi ciency, with tighter construction and less air infi ltration. While that’s great for maintaining temperatures, it means air can become stagnant and stale in your

home, especially when you and your family are spending more time indoors.

You need fresh air in your home and that’s where a ventilator helps. It works with your heat-ing and cooling system to allow clean, fresh outdoor air into your home without jeopardizing your comfort.

Who Can Do It

When evaluating your home’s indoor air quality, it’s important to discuss it with a certifi ed heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) contractor. All these helpful solutions can tie right into your home comfort control, making it easy to monitor and regulate indoor tem-perature, humidity and air quality.

Healthy living starts with having a healthy home. A practical solution could be the right indoor air-quality products.

A PEST-FREE HOME OFTEN STARTS WITH A CLEAN KITCHEN

(NewsUSA) - Kitchens have always been a familiar gathering place in the home. However, in addition to attracting family and friends, common household pests often stake out the kitchen as their nesting grounds due to the abundance of food and hiding places.

As winter is typically the time of year many pests seek food and shelter inside homes, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reminds homeowners that many pests, such as cockroaches, fruit fl ies, rodents and others can contaminate food, spread bacteria and in-crease grocery bills from having to replace ruined food.

“Keeping our kitchens clean may not be a foolproof way to prevent any and all pest infesta-tions, but a few proactive steps can go a long way in ensuring the only visitors enjoying the food are those homeowners have invited,” noted Missy Henriksen, vice president of public aff airs for the NPMA.

The NPMA recommends the following preventative measures to ensure your kitchen, pan-try and home remain pest free:

* Immediately wipe up any crumbs or spills from countertops, tables, fl oors and shelves.

* Store food in airtight containers, and dispose of garbage regularly in sealed receptacles.

* Only purchase food in sealed packages that show no sign of damage.

* Add a bay leaf to canisters and packages of dry goods like fl our, rice and other grains -- the pungent scent repels many pantry pests.

* Check expiration dates on baking ingredients before use.

* If you keep fresh fruit on the counter, check it often for signs of over-ripening or decay. As female fruit fl ies lay an average of 500 eggs on the surface of fermenting fruit, it’s best to dispose of the fruit in outdoor trash cans to prevent those eggs from hatching in your indoor trash.

* Run your garbage disposal regularly.

* Don’t let dirty dishes pile up and stand in the sink for long periods of time.

* Don’t leave pet food and water bowls out for long periods of time.

* Install door sweeps on ex-terior doors, and repair dam-aged screens.

* Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains.

* Seal cracks and crevices on the outside of the home and around the kitchen, es-pecially around stove and water pipes.

SMELLY FIREPLACE?After a long season of use, fi replaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and fl ue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring clean-ing is to cut down on odor. After using a fi replace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the fl ue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and fl ue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fi replace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF

NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC off ers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your fi ling status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple fi ling jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefi t. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and fi ling requirements must be met. You must fi le a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to fi le. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs pro-vide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to de-velop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empow-ering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly ba-sis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffi nsurance.com.

Welcome New Patientswww.optimumhealthmedicalgroup.com/family-practice Even as I enjoy getting out on the snowshoes to enjoy the last of the snow, I welcome

any sign that spring is near. One of those signs is when our resident bluebirds have arrived

home for the season. Anyone who has ever seen a bluebird knows the feeling of surprise and

joy that accompanies a sighting of these lively creatures. Since they are not overly shy of

humans and nest and feed in open areas, bluebirds are some of the easiest birds to watch and

learn about.

They are territorial so once you’ve seen them in an area, odds are good that you’ll be

able to visit and observe them on a regular basis. Those with a large lawn or property adjacent

to open fi elds can attract their own resident bluebirds so they can enjoy them on a daily basis

during spring and summer. I am lucky to be able to host a pair of bluebirds and the little

effort needed to attract them to your yard is amply rewarded by the color and liveliness they

add to the little bit of the world we call our garden.

The easiest way to lure bluebirds to your property is to provide bluebird-nesting boxes.

If you would like plans for a bluebird-nesting box go to the NYS Bluebird Society webpage

at www.nysbs.org. If you purchase a bluebird box, all you need to know is where to mount

it to attract bluebirds.

Your bluebird box should be mounted on a post (wooden or metal). Mounting on trees

is not advised, since it may allow predators to gain access to the box. Your bluebird-nesting

box should be mounted with the bottom a minimum of 3’ from the ground. 4’ to 5’ is con-

sidered optimal. In our cold climate, the box should be mounted with the entrance facing

southeast, away from our colder prevailing wind. Since bluebirds hunt for insects in lawns

and meadows, it’s best to locate your box adjacent to these open areas. To help fl edglings

survive, try to place your boxes where there is a fencepost or tree within 100’ of the entrance

hole. This will give young bluebirds an easy, safe perch to reach on their fi rst fl ight from

the box.

Since bluebirds are territorial, nesting boxes should not be placed closer than 100’

apart. If you have swallows in your area, they may compete with bluebirds for nesting boxes.

In this situation, it may be necessary to place two boxes 5’ to 15’ apart. The swallows will

occupy one box, leaving the other available for the bluebirds. Since bluebirds are on the

increase in New York State, properly placing nesting boxes on your property is very likely to

attract younger pairs of bluebirds with the possibility that they, and their offspring, will return

to your area year after year.

To lure nesting bluebirds to your area, have your nesting boxes up as early in spring as

possible. As soon as the bluebirds return to the area, they’ll start investigating possible nest-

ing sites. After that it is simply a matter of keeping the boxes clean and safe.

In fall or early in spring before the bluebirds arrive, the nesting box should be cleaned out.

Remove any old nesting material and then scrape out dirt and debris with a putty knife or

wire brush. Old nesting material should not be left on the ground near the nest but removed

from the area to prevent parasites that can harm baby bluebirds in the nest. Washing out the

nesting box with a spray of 1/10 bleach/water will sterilize the box any it is ready for the

season.

THE DANGER OF SMOKING

WHILE DRIVINGUsing a cell phone, texting and drinking alcoholic bev-erages are all activities that can lead to fi nes or arrest if done while in a moving ve-hicle. But in some areas, it is already illegal or may soon be, to smoke in a vehicle if in the presence of children.

Since 2006, several communities across North America have implemented laws to prevent smoking in cars when chil-dren are present, and campaigns for smoke-free car laws are poised to continue.

The public has become increasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, in-cludes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products. Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formaldehyde, lead, butane, cyanide, and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to a smoker's body and hair and can even surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic.

Asthma, heart disease and cancer may result from contact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small enclosed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers

hazardous air quality, even if a window is down. What's more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery off -gas back into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car.

The developing bodies of children and their small stature put youngsters at risk for greater complications from cigarette smoke, although any passenger is at risk.

Laws vary depending on location and typically apply to children ages 16 and under. Smokers are urged to quit smoking for their health and the health of others. But those who continue to smoke should refrain from smoking when inside a vehi-cle, especially when children are present.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County

Expanding Visibility Of Southern Saratoga County

Businesses And CommunitiesThe online marketplace is becoming crowded with web-sites, social media, and other concerns all vying for your marketing dollars. There are great choices out there, but I’m rather partial to one run by the organization that has earned the trust of the local community over the past 47 years. Last August, The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County entered into an exclusive partnership agreement with the Town of Clifton Park, the cliftonpark.org website, and the Clifton Park Center mall to promote our part of the County and highlight the businesses and organizations which make their home between Exit 13 and the Kosciuszko Bridges. The cliftonpark.org website, run by a local business based right in town, is the official site of the Town of Clifton Park. By linking with the Chamber’s southernsaratoga.org website and that of southern Saratoga County’s largest shopping center (www.shopcpc.com), we can showcase the many great services that are available in this part of the County and differentiate ourselves from other Tech Valley communities, giving potential customers a clear choice as to where to spend their hard-earned dollars. Similarly, we’ve helped to showcase the important work of local nonprofits, various community groups which help the needy in our hometowns, as well as local governments. Many communities within southern Saratoga County also have local websites connected with their com-

munity business organizations (for example the Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, and Malta BPAs, the Mechanicville-Stillwater Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Waterford Community Business Alliance) and those sites are also linked to the southernsaratoga.org website as well as our Face-book pages. These days, it’s important to swiftly navigate the various web sites and find needed services. Thankfully, connecting with fellow businesspeople and other commu-nity groups has never been easier. Simply visit one of the sites mentioned above, call (518) 371-7748 or email me at [email protected] for more information.

Subaru “Share the Love” Check Presentation to Mohawk Hudson Humane Society at Goldstein Subaru

Menands, NY – On Saturday, March 15, Goldstein Subaru and Subaru of America presented a check to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) and announced the

results of the annual 2013 “Share the Love” campaign which began in December 2013.

To celebrate the record-setting year for the "Empties for Animals" recycling program, the Society also presented a special award to the Goldstein Auto Group for their program partnership, which began in 2011.   e "Empties for Animals" bottle and can recycling income was a little over $109,000 for 2013, an increase over  2012 total of  $99,000. In 2011, the program totaled close to $74,000. MHHS volunteers sort  the bottles and cans by distributor and  as a result, the Society receives 8 cents per can and bottle instead of the typical 5 cents.   e Goldstein Auto Group encourages people to drop bottle and can donations at each of their dealerships and their special "Empties for Animals" van delivers them to the Society and will even pick up large donations. For every new Subaru purchased or leased from Goldstein Subaru, 1754 Central Avenue in Albany, from November 21, 2013 and through January 2, 2014, Subaru of America donated $250.00 to the owner’s choice of participating charities.  Goldstein Subaru partnered with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for the annual year-end campaign and kicked-o the program on Saturday, November 23rd with a Share the Love Pet Adoption Event. e Society, located at 3 Oakland Avenue in Menands, is open for adoptions seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 10AM to 6PM, Saturday from 10AM to 5PM and Sunday 1PM to 4PM.  In addition, cats are available for adoption at the Society’s satellite locations at the PetSmart stores in Glenmont and Latham as well as the Petco store in Cli on Park.
