A Neighborhood Watch Program is a program of neighbors watching out for each other during the workday, eve- nings and vacations. Its purpose is to create an alert neighborhood by using simple crime prevention methods. The Program works through the mutual aid of neighbors watching out for each other and their properties. Join Ser- geant Tom McDonough from the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department and learn: How a Neighborhood Watch Program can assist law enforcement and keep our neighborhoods safer, how to start a Neighborhood Watch Program in your neighborhood or on your street, how to improve the security of your home and crime prevention tips, and personal protection and safety tips for kids. Please respond by calling 899-4411 so we can insure enough handouts. If you forget or have a friend who would like to attend, come anyway. The family would like to acknowl- edge the professional cour- tesy extended and presence of the Saratoga County Sher- iff’s Department, NYS Troop- ers, local fire departments, lo- cal and long distance towing/recovery companies, ambulances, EMTs, para- medic vehicles, area busi- ness owners, friends and family who expressed their sympathy at Bill’s services and the kindness extended throughout; this has helped to lighten our burden and was a tremendous blessing. A scholarship in Bill’s name is being formed that will assist in funding the education of young firefight- ers. Thank you for your pa- tronage and we look forward to continue serving you. Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and col-lected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn gener-ated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption

fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. E.P.

Stars for Our TroopsCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots or-ganization that is growing fast across the USA. We take re-tired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. Did You Know?Interactive electronics are poised to be all the rage for the 2012 gift-giving season, as Flying Super Grover® and Bouncy the Happy to See Me Pup® figure to generate significant interest. In addition, a classic interactive electronic toy is making a comeback this year. Developed in the 1990s, Furby® was one of the first interactive toys for kids. Its reincarnation has more expressive LCD eyes, more emotions and various fur colors. It even comes with an iOS app. Children can have fun teaching their Furby to learn English and respond through play.

Tree Lighting TipsLighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Un-tangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but light-ing a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the profes-sionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t pro-duce a multi-dimensional ef-fect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is ac-tually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to pre-vent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an in-ner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual ap-peal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

Did You Know?Online shopping has expanded considerably in the last several years. Although Black Friday and its online counterpart, Cyber Monday, may seem like the best times to gain the lowest prices on merchandise, it actually could pay to wait a little longer. Merchants may offer deep discounts on premium items that haven’t moved during the last days of the holiday shopping season, typically between December 21 and 24. This includes big-ticket products, such as fine jewelry, furniture and televisions. It is possible to take advantage of deep price cuts the closer you get to Christmas Day. Keep in mind that you may have to pay a premium for getting those gifts delivered on time, which could offset the savings. Therefore, it might be a wise idea to present gift recipients with a photo of what they will be getting for the holidays and deliver the item a day or two later.

Did You Know?Making a list when holiday shopping can help you avoid spend-ing more than your budget allows. Rather than be caught off guard, carefully make your shopping list and include everyone you intend to gift. Purchase one or two extra generic gifts just in case something comes up. It is much easier to afford holiday giving when you can divide your budget by the number of gift recipients rather than having to add on gifts after the fact. Also, in the event you are left with extra gifts that were unnecessary, you can return them after the holidays and use the money to treat yourself to something nice or donate the gift or the re-turned funds to someone in need.

Out-Of-The-Box Themes For Your Holiday PartyParties are an integral part of the holiday season, when friends and family gather to celebrate and give thanks. For holiday hosts, parties are a great opportunity to make the season even more festive with an event that guests won’t soon forget. The following are just a few themes to make your holiday party as memorable as it is merry.* Christmas Sweater Party: Christmas sweater parties have grown in popularity over the last decade, when revelers have tried to outdo one another with the most outrageous holiday-themed sweater. Give prizes for the most outlandish sweater and let guests know early on so they can begin their hunt for a holiday sweater that’s so ugly or outrageous you can’t help but love it.* Christmas Costume Party: Costume parties aren’t just for Halloween. This holiday season, consider making your holiday bash a costume party, encouraging guests to dress up as their favorite characters from holiday tales like “Frosty the Snow-man,” “A Christmas Carol” or any of the host of beloved holi-day legends.* Caribbean Christmas: The weather come the holiday sea-son may be the one thing to put a damper on the festivities. To combat blue feelings from potentially inclement weather, consider a Caribbean theme for your holiday party this season. Rather than wearing sweaters and long pants, wear beach attire and give the party a touch of the Caribbean. Outfit your home

in beach decor and serve food and drinks reminiscent of the Caribbean instead of more traditional holiday fare like eggnog and gingerbread cookies.* Film Festival: Holiday movies are another tradition of the season, so why not invite friends and family over for a holiday film marathon? Include classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story” and encourage guests to submit their own favorites for consideration. * Christmas Karaoke: For those who love to belt out their favorite holiday tunes, consider throwing a Christmas karaoke party that allows guests to perform their own renditions of their favorite Christmas carols. Purchase a home karaoke set and ask guests in advance of the party if there are any particular songs they’d like to perform.

Annual Christmas Tree SaleBALLSTON SPA – For more than 40 years the Ballston Spa Rotary Club’s main fundraiser has been selling quality Christmas trees. As has been the tradition, tree sales will once again begin this year on the day after Thanksgiving in the Curtis Lumber parking lot on Route 67 in Ballston Spa. Trees are sold daily from 10am until 8pm. Dark green, long lasting, and fragrant all trees are the very desirable Balsam Fir. The attractively shaped trees range in height from 6-½ feet to 8-½ feet and are priced at $40 or $45 each. There are also a limited number of taller trees, which are priced higher. Staffed with volunteers and supported by local businesses, proceeds from the tree sales are donated throughout the year to local non-profit organizations supporting those in need in our local community, and international projects promoting good will. This year the Ballston Spa Rotary Club will also be collecting non-perishable food items and new or gently used coats for the needy. (P)

Lucky

April

Cuddles

Sophie

Lucky is a good dog who just wants attention and to be loved. She can "sit” and "shake" and is working on "down". Lucky loves to have her belly rubbed! She will chase balls and toys and she will fetch for you and even "drop" her toy/ball for you to throw it again. Lucky is working on not jumping on people, but she's a puppy and that's what puppies do so it will take some time. She is crate trained and goes in willingly when

her foster family has to leave. Lucky does chase cats, so she'll be better off in a home without cats. You may call 518.428.2994 for more infor-mation or fill out an online Adoption Application.

April is a 6-year old treeing walker Coonhound who weighs 60 pounds. She loves attention,

playing, and going for walks. April has been an outside dog so she does tend to be vocal and must be leashed when you take her out. April

and her foster mother are working on Sit, Down, Stay, Place, Out, Off, Come, and Heel. She is also spending as much time as possible in the house in

order to learn her "indoor manners". April has not shown any aggression and gets

along with her foster family's cat.

Poor Sophie! Her owner passed away and left her behind. Sophie is a very affectionate

6-year old who would do best in a quiet home with a woman.

Cuddles is a 6 month old little darling that showed up amongst a colony of feral cats- and she is anything but! She’s a sweet, cuddly, shiny

black princess of a kitty.

In my last couple of columns, I’ve written about the legends and lore of the plants we share the holidays with (along with some winter driving adventures). While reading about holiday plants, I came across all kinds of interesting Christmas lore. Take Santa for instance. The Jolly Old Elf is subject to a good bit of ridicule by some for being a commer-cialized figure that detracts from the “true” religious meaning of Christmas. While its true that Santa’s been used to sell everything from cola to cars, the evolution of Saint Nicholas to our modern Santa is a rich tale that reaches back to the early days of Christianity.

The earliest legend of St. Nicholas tells us that he was born into a wealthy family in Asia Minor around 200. Though wealthy, Nicholas’ family was well known for charitable kindness. An only child, Nicholas was devoted to the prayers and fasting that his religion demanded. Eventually Nicholas inherited his parents fortune as well as their love of giving. Indeed, he devoted his whole life to investing that fortune in the well being of the unfortu-nate; especially children.

One of the earliest accounts of Nicholas’ goodness revolves around the three young daughters of a local noble family. It seems that the family had fallen on hard times and their fortune had been lost including the dowries of the three daughters. Without hope of marriage, the three daughters resolved to sell their bodies to restore their families fortune. Nicholas overheard their plan and resolved to solve the dilemma. He snuck through the village at night and dropped a bag of gold coins through an open window. He did this three nights in a row, providing each of the daughters with a dowry to replace those that had been lost. This episode led, eventually, to St. Nicholas becoming the patron saint of not only maidens but of pawnbrokers and bankers as well. Even today the symbol used to identify a pawnshop is three gold balls representing the three bags of gold that St. Nicholas delivered so many centuries ago.

Nicholas’ reputation as a protector of children was solidified by a miracle he per-formed shortly after he had been elected as Bishop of Myra. The story goes that a mother had placed her infant into a pot of water over a fire to give it a bath. When the mother heard that the famous bishop, Nicholas, was in town she rushed to see him, forgetting all about her baby. When she met the Bishop, she suddenly remembered her baby in the pot over the fire. She begged Nicholas to help her. Nicholas calmly told her to return home. When she arrived, she found the baby laughing and playing with the bubbles in the now-boiling water.

Nicholas’ best-known miracle occurred during a great famine. While all in the countryside were starving, Nicholas went to the city’s port. There were grain ships there that had stopped on their way to Alexandria. Nicholas promised the captains that, if they would unload a part of the grain to feed the citizens, it would be restored before they reached Alexandria. Reluctantly, the captains did as Nicholas bid and not only was their cargo miraculously restored but the unloaded grain increased as well providing enough grain for bread to feed everyone through two more years of famine!

There are many other miracles that are attributed to the Holy Bishop Nicholas in-cluding the grisly tale of three scholars (some accounts say three boys) who were murdered and dismembered by an evil innkeeper who hid the parts in a pickling barrel (or baked in a pie in another version). The innkeeper’s crime was invisible to all but Nicholas who finds the victims and restores them to life through prayer. As accounts of these miracles spread throughout the land, Nicholas became popular as one who protected the young and weak and could be counted on to come to their aid in time of need.

Tradition places Nicholas’ death on December 6th in 342. Even in death, St Nich-olas continued to serve the weak and infirm through oil that is reported to have flowed from his tomb. The miracles attributed to this oil are as awe inspiring as the miracles performed by St. Nicholas himself. In the 800s, Nicholas was canonized and eventually embraced as the patron saint of countries as far east as Russia, as far south as Italy and as far west as The Netherlands.

By 1000, St. Nicholas was the best known saint throughout Europe and western Asia. He was established as one who performed miracles and delivered gifts in the dead of night. At this time, St. Nicholas was generally portrayed as a tall, thin man with a dark beard dressed in the red robes of a bishop. The anniversary of his death was widely celebrated. More next week…thanks for the read.

Four Essential Tips To Make The Most Of Your Résumé(StatePoint) Job hunting can be a frustrating experience. Many times you can apply for what seems like the perfect job only to never hear back. With most open positions receiving an over-whelming number of applicants these days, it’s extremely important to set yourself apart from the pack.

The most essential part of landing an interview is your résumé. Often your résumé is the only representation of you a hiring manager has. Typically, employers don’t spend more than a minute or two looking over a résumé -- a small amount of time to make a great impression.

“Landing an interview for the job you want is hard enough, especially now with so many people going after the same position,” says Michael McAuliffe, President of Family Credit Manage-ment, a non-profit consumer credit counseling service. “If your résumé contains flaws, from poor choice in wording to an overly-complicated format, then your chances of getting a call go from slim to none.”

Give yourself every chance possible to get the job. Make your résumé stand out among the crowd by following these four tips.

Proofread!

A misspelling or grammatical error on a resume could lead to your résumé getting tossed out at first glance. Use spell check and have a friend or family member look it over as well. You never know where an error could be lurking on the page.

Get Expert Help

Expert résumé review, such as the service offered by Family Credit Management, can be an invaluable resource for any job-seeker. Seasoned hiring professionals look over résumés to cor-rect any mistakes and offer advice as to how the résumé can be improved and be better received by prospective employers. Some companies charge for this service, but non-profits like Family Credit Management offer their expertise for free.

You can e-mail [email protected] to get feedback on your résumé and cover letter. You can also find contact information and more information about Family Credit Management’s services at www.familycredit.org.

Be Appropriate

A major red flag for hiring managers is an inappropriate email address. You don’t want to be remembered as a joke, you want to stand out for your abilities. “With free email services like Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo, there is no reason not to have a generic email address consisting simply of your name,” says McAuliffe.

Formatting

Hiring managers need to be able to quickly find the information that matters most to the position. Using an unusual format could cause some of your accomplishments to get lost in the jumble. Make it as simple as possible for the hiring manager and stick with a traditional format.

So take good care of your résumé. It is the first step to landing the job you want.
