HOST FAMILIES NEEDEDCAPITAL DISTRICT - The Doane Stuart School in Rensselaer, NY is in their second year of their international student pro-gram. The school recently announced it will be bringing in even more students in the fall. So the school is looking for host families within a 30-minute radius of the school. Most of the current students plan to graduate from Doane Stuart and hopefully get into an American college or university. The schools have noted that being so far from home and doing something so important can be a lot of pressure on these students, and that a good host family can make all of the dif-ference to these students. The students look to their hosts and peers to learn about American culture. For instance, many of the students who have never seen snow have taken an interest in snowboarding and also snow tubing. The stu-dents are from various parts of China and have very diverse interests. Some of the students have become very interested in basketball and play on the high school team and others have formed bonds based on a mutual appreciation of video games. The students have even created a Chinese Club at the school to teach American students about Chinese customs and traditions. To learn more about the program visit www.gphomestay.com or e-mail [email protected]

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF
NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.
CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs pro-vide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to de-velop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empow-ering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly ba-sis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

After being cooped up for so many months, we’re all anxious to get outside and clean up our yards and get on with gardening projects. Even though it is still very cool, there’s a lot that can get planted right away. Fruit trees, rose bushes and even hardy fl ower bulbs like lilies can be planted now even though freezing temperatures and even another snowstorm (I know, I know) are still a possibility. These plants are hardy and are perfectly capable of en-during through the vagaries of early spring weather. In fact, it is actually better to get hardy plants in the ground as early as possible so they can take advantage of cool soil to grow a strong root system. Of course we’ll want to wait another month and a half before we start planting tender bulbs like dahlias and such. If you’re unsure about what you can plant right now, just drop by your local garden center and they’ll be happy to fi ll you in.
Planting seems simple enough but, through all my years of garden retailing, I’ve noticed that most plant deaths are not caused by bugs or lack of water but ignoring “proper planting depth”. Planting depth refers to how deeply the plant is set into the soil. Most folks do a great job preparing the soil using peat moss, bone meal, and other additives to insure survival and growth. The BIG MISTAKE PART 1 usually occurs at the fi nal stage of the planting process. If, for instance, you’re planting a tree, you’ll dig the hole only as deep as the ball or pot that contains the roots. At the bottom of the hole you’ll blend an equal amount of peat moss with the original soil. For an average sized tree or shrub, you’ll want to add about a cup or so of bone meal into this blend. The soil at the bottom of the hole should be very loose since you’ve been mixing it.
Next, (and this is where the BIG MISTAKE PART 1 occurs), you should place the tree into the hole and check for PROPER PLANTING DEPTH. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. In other words, the plant’s stem or trunk should NOT be sunk below the level of the surrounding area. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel is handy) across the planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground. If the plant is too low, remove it from the hole and add soil to the bottom to raise it up until you get it at the proper level. This seems trivial but it can make all the differ-ence to the plants’ health and survival.
Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant (the dividing line on the plant be-tween what is above the ground and what is below) is at the proper level, fi ll in the rest of the planting hole. You can add more peat moss and bone meal around the sides of the root ball but make sure that the top 1/4 of the hole is fi lled in with just the original soil with no peat moss added. Peat moss improves the soil’s ability to retain moisture. When added to the surface, peat moss will dry out and, in a wick-like manner, draw moisture from below the plant, drying it out.
This is the point where inexperienced gardeners make the BIG MISTAKE PART 2. When you dig a hole then fi ll it with a large root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. What do we do with it? At this point many will opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. I guess it looks cozy; like tucking the plant in or something. I really don’t know why it’s done. The point is: DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system to the branches and leaves above. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. This will collect water and direct it down to the root system below. The importance of maintaining proper planting depth extends to 99% of planting situations. There are rare exceptions (like tomatoes) but it is a rule that is best obeyed. From maple trees to marigolds and even your houseplants. You should also take care when applying bark and other mulches not to pile them up against the stems and trunks of plants. I’m always (sadly) amazed when I see trees with bark mulch piled in a volcano shaped mound around the trunks of trees. Remember: roots is roots and stems is stems. Bury the roots but let the stems be free to breathe. Thanks for the read.

RECENTLY RETIRED AND LOOKING FOR MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEER WORK?
SARATOGA REGION - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9-12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to stu-dents as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are a recently retired woman looking for some mean-ingful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffi nsurance.com.

HOW TO GIFT A VEHICLEGenerous friends or family members frequently opt to give away an older-model car to some-one who may not have the means to purchase a car of their own. Vehicles are a necessity for those who live in areas where public transportation is unavailable or inconvenient, and gifting a car can have a signifi cant impact on the life of someone who will be on the receiving end of the present.
While gifting a car may seem like a straightforward transaction, some steps need to be taken to ensure the process is conducted in adherence to the law. Various states and provinces may have their own specifi c rules, so it is best to contact your local department of motor vehicles offi ce. The following are some general guidelines. Transfering a vehicle to another person, whether it is a gift or a sale, involves transfer of the title as well. A vehicle title is a legal docu-ment naming a person or persons as the owner of the vehicle. The title contains the current owner's name and residential address. It also includes the vehicle's identifi cation number, or VIN, the date the car was sold and the mileage on the vehicle at the time of sale.
Depending on where you live, transferring the title may be as simple as writing "gift" on the title. Otherwise, you may need to fi ll out forms to transfer the title to another person. Some people draw up a bill of sale with a nominal dollar amount to include with the title to show documentation of the transfer of ownership. Additionally, the recipient of the gifted car will fi ll out paperwork, which includes tax information. Again, depending on where you live, there will be rules about tax exemptions or taxes that must be paid on the vehicle. This is another time when contacting the motor vehicle department is adviseable. Keep in mind that who-ever is doing the gifting may not be able to use the car as a tax write-off . The United States Internal Revenue Service notes that you cannot deduct the value of gifts you make other than those given to registered charitable organizations.
It is common courtesy to ensure the vehicle is in good working order prior to giving it as a gift. This way the recipient isn't faced with a bevy of costly repairs. Take the car or truck in for a tune-up. Be sure it has a fresh oil change and that it has been washed and vacuumed. This way the recipient gets the maximum benefi t from this generous gift.

Albany, NY (March 27, 2014) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2014 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.
