So what happened in Reno that all Citrus Belt bowlers should know about? How about our own Darron Peters leading the BOWLERS JOURNAL Na- tional Senior Singles Tourna- ment. Darron headed to Reno about a week ago and gener- ated enough electricity on the lanes to light up my ipad in- box. As his scores appeared on my screen it seemed as if Apple’s 4Gs were pulsating like a movable icon. Scores too hot to handle. After bowling well in the USBC Open Tournament [All Events 2129 (4th), Singles 719 (27th) and Doubles 1344 (6th)] Darron marched to the far end of the Bowling Sta- dium and laced up his shoes again for the Bowlers Journal Tournament. There he bowled even better. While things went well dur- ing practice, carry improved as the competition continued. His senior singles series of 740 (197 - 300 - 243) placed him in first place. With partner CLIFF CONNORS he posted a solid 1376 (740 and 630) for fourth place. Last year Darron and Cliff bowled 1341 for a Citrus Belt’s DARRON PETERS Leads Seniors at Bowlers Journal Championship by Frank Weiler top ten finish. If Darron’s singles score holds up, he may be the first Citrus Belt bowler to win a Bowlers Journal national title. Come July we will know if our guy takes home the “BLUE RIBBON” and a hefty check. Darron Peters NORWALK — One of the most notable pinfall mile- stones a grassroots bowler can accomplish is membership in the United States Bowling Congress Open Champion- ships’ 100,000 pinfall club, a feat long-time PBA member and current Storm Products Vice President-Public Rela- tions Bob Hart accomplished recently in Reno. In his 58th USBC Open appearance, Hart became the 14th bowler to join that elite club. By way of comparison, Australia’s Jason Belmonte is the first member a new PBA 100,000 pinfall club, and it only took him five years to do it. The reigning PBA Player of the Year is the first player to surpass that milestone in PBA World Series of Bowling competition, knocking over 101,431 pins in 456 games (a 222.43 scoring pace). Sean BELMONTE, WALTER RAY WILLIAMS JR. ACHIEVE PBA PINFALL MILESTONES Rash will likely become the second member of the WSOB 100,000 pinfall club this fall in his sixth World Series. Rash has a 99,717 total for 445 games, averaging 224.04. While membership in any 100,000 pinfall club is note- worthy, PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. has established a standard for PBA Tour competition that will be hard to beat. Williams closed the 2012-13 PBA Tour season as the first-and-only player to knock down more than five million pins in PBA Tour com- petition. As of Dec. 31, 2013, Wil- liams had bowled 22,926 games in 775 PBA Tour events and knocked down a total of 5,019,834 pins – a lifetime av- erage of 218.95. To put WRW’s career into perspective, an average league bowler rolling 100 games in a season would need to aver- age nearly 219 for a little more than 229 years to match that feat. Williams’ closest chal- lenger is fellow Hall of Famer Pete Weber who has toppled 4,650,511 pins in 21,482 games during a career that be- gan in 1979. Weber has aver- aged 216.48 in his 750 PBA Tour events. 6 Gamer - $300.00 1st Place SUNDAY, May 4th at 5PM • Entry Fee: $50 check-in 4:30 Oil Pattern Used TBD” OPTIONAL - Sidepots $6 - Blocks $4 • Call Jon at (949)770-0055 for more info.

Got a complaint? step up!Seems since merger mania took over and all the changes in USBC and our local and state asso-ciations, enthusiasm for being a part of the process is disappearing. A lot of what centers around making an organization a success is being able to have eyeball to eyeball communication on solving problems. With strong individuals ascending to the helm sometimes it is difficult to ever get your point across. There is a way to do this. Step up! If you don’t like the way something is going and are not just a chronic complainer, you can be heard.

1) Be sure you complaint is sound – have the facts2) Put your argument together – in writing so you don’t ramble3) Offer a solution and be prepared for reasonable discussion.

I am hearing people complain about so many things but you can’t change or fix anything if you don’t sensibly state your case and offer a solution. Our meetings are democratically run and you do have the opportunity to speak. Meetings? Oh, yes, you need to come to the meeting! With delegates opting out of attending meetings you are leaving the decision making up to a few and no one ever hears your input because you are preaching to the choir.

We can affect change. We can work together but we need to show up to state our case. Step up!

LAKEWOOD — CAL Bowl was our host. We got a great semi tough fair shot as 179 entrants came and enjoyed the day. The cut scores were decent, +71 for the men and +45 for the women. Super Se-niors were added to the board (two Men and one Woman) Ray Varela, Bob Selner, Sierrie Herradura, and Teresita Abing. This gave us 39 bowlers mak-ing it to the semi-finals.

High qualifiers for the tournament were Kmel Cu-nanan +156, and Kerry Lucka led the Femmes +140. The Match Series worth $5,000 (5 K 5- Grand) and Kmel draws the score, a 526 matched by two of our Loyal Members Ge Ge Gabriel, and Emilio Flores YES! They gladly shared $2,500 each and Yes!! they were buying the Beer :=)) Congrats to both men who are Super ABTA Members and deserving to say the least! We have a carryover of $195 and estimate the Match Series at $1,250 this Saturday at Action Lanes.

In the 3-6-9 Roll-off worth $2,900, Kevin Collier and Johnny Tran couldn’t eliminate one another so they shared the $50 Consolation Cash. The 3-6-9 is Now $3,000 at Action Lanes. Big Buck are in store for us there!!

In our optional doubles, leaders were Kelly Wynn, and Kmel Cunanan 1407 $130 edg-ing Du Quach. Michael Kong 1407. $110 also Ed Abarca and Chris Kelly 1407 $110. There

was a total of $1,300 paid out in doubles and 206 paid spots with low to cash of 1364. The Weekly Doubles are 100% Payback to our Members as an added perk.

During the 4 pm and 6pm squads, we will be using a sign up card for doubles. This means you will need to pay for all entries on your card and list the names you want to double with. This is to help us out with doubles as the number of entries during these two squads is taking us too far into the first, and must be recti-fied!!.

Leading the Semis was William Ele with a nice +130. So he gets the advantage of sit-ting out and bowl for the Ti-tle. Runner-up was Rithy Ath +100. He gets a first round Bye and will enter in round-2 of the Top 16 Single elimina-tion roll offs. All 39 bowlers cash. The top 16 advancing to the Roll offs.

William had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $1,920. He drew a 249 with no winner so we estimate the Match Game at $3,250 Saturday at Action Lanes.

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In Round One , the seven being eliminated received checks of $100. We advanced to Round Two seeing Mien Barcelona, William Garrett, Rodolfo Mar-tinez, and Easy- Ed Abarca. They finished 6-9th Places and $105 each.

Now down to the final five

bowlers. In match one Marina Suos edged Fred Ringor on the final Ball 219-217. Rithy Ath downed Edmund Del Mundo in a good one 231-217. Ed-mond and Fred are 4th and 5th with nice bowling and Rithy to meet HIS BETTER HALF Marina:=) for the Right to bowl for the title vs Mr. Ele..

The match was on and again, another good match from both bowlers. The match was close thru the first five frames, and saw both bowlers with slim leads. After the fifth frame it was Marina who held a slim lead. During the next three frames it was close and going to the 10th Marina led but she opened, Rithy struck and won the close match. Ma-rina is 3rd with great bowling, and Rithy off to the title game vs William Ele.

The title game now! Wil-liam started on the left lane and 3-6-10 split/open. Rith Spared and both are clean with Rithy stepping up and doubles in frames 4-5 taking a lead. William had a 5-10 split in the 6th and Rithy with a double in frames 7-8 took a huge lead. William splitting again in frame 9. It is over as Rithy wins in a 244-212 score to take home his second ABTA Title in fine style and a nice $2,700 1st prize with the Cash N Carry Bonus. William who bowled very well til the end would take home $500 for his second place finish.

Congrats to Rithy who I have gotten to know. He is a

Very fine young gentleman and his bowling has surely improved in the period he has bowled with the ABTA. He is one of the nicest guys around and we are proud that he wins title #2.

William Ele, also one of the Good Guys and a long time ABTA Member got his first title. He has been runner-up 3 times. William is very well-liked by all great bowling!!

Marina, a past Champion, bowled very well in 3rd place, and almost got her second title. Her better half was surely bet-ter at CAL by 3 scant pins:-) She is a Sweet Lady and we are glad to have her with the ABTA. Great Bowling Ma-rina!!

Rithy Ath hails from Long Beach and Married as said, to Marina! He used a Zero Grav-ity drilled by ABTA Member Charles Weeks! Charles also bowled the event, along with his pretty GF Lanae Kent-ner. He thanks #1 fan Marina for support, also Royce An-geles and Jean Colian ABTA Members who gave support. He missed his friends who couldn’t be at the Event. Con-grats again Rithy!!.

Inaugural central Valley Masters Tournament Proves

To be a huge success!by Bette Addington, California Bowling Writers

BAKERSFIELD — When a group of bowling friends from Bakersfield got together and joined forces with Team Nightmare and decided to try and have a local tournament and see what happens, they had absolutely no idea how good it would go over! They formed the Central Valley Masters Tournament and their Tournament Directors included Greg Barraza, Jr., John Curtis, Bryan Reid, Mindy Reid, Craig Henderson, Rick Matthews, Mike Curtis, Ian Byers, Ron Andrews, Zack New-man and Chris Gregory. They had three weeks to pull this off and that they did! With the help of Facebook postings, and their directors visiting leagues and running Win-A-Spot tournaments for just $5, you could sense the excitement in our local bowling community to give this event a shot.

And that they did! The handicap event was held on Sunday, March 30, at Regency Bowling Center with the first of two qualifying squads at 12 noon. Bowlers just kept arriving and signing up and before they knew it, they were putting not two to a pair of lanes but four or five since they had 65 entries in the first squad alone!! All the lanes at Regency were full! How long has it been since you’ve seen that kind of participation? And it wasn’t all local bowlers—they drew bowlers from Las Vegas and guys from up north and guys from down south. Regency was abuzz!

The Tournament Directors stuck to their guns and did oil the lanes between the qualifying squads which threw the 2:30 second squad back some due to the tremendous turnout. But the bowlers didn’t mind and many from the first squad decided to stay and bowl the second squad. With a rea-sonable $60 entry fee, the second squad drew an even bigger number of entries—79! Tournament bowling is back thanks to the efforts of this group who did an outstanding job with their first-ever event. Director John Curtis shared, “I just wanted to take the time and thank the team for doing a phenomenal job. It’s awesome that we can throw a tournament in three weeks and have that much success. There were a few hiccups that we ironed out the second squad. We had 144 entries and paid 24 spots with the top 5 paying $1200, $750, $600, $500 and $400. We paid out $880 in the scratch series and we had 99 brackets. We are going to make some changes that we may have overlooked. We value your feedback—it is the only way it will get better. I want to thank Regency Lanes and Mike Hefley from the Bowlers Edge Pro Shop who did a great job taking care of the lanes. Thank you everyone that supported the tournament and the bowlers that bowled but most of all thank you to Team Nightmare for working so hard to make this tournament happen. I hope other bowlers will get inspired to do the same and get Bakersfield back into bowling tournaments.”

For those that didn’t get a chance to bowl, this tournament had two qualifying squads and bowl-ers bowled five games across ten lanes in a squad. The top five bowlers from both squads then advanced to a TV-style Roll-off.

Congratulations to the Top Five of this event: 1st place – Matt Jones of West Hills; 2nd place – Richard Brantley; 3rd place – David King; 4th place – Don Apple; and 5th place – Danielle Looney.

Although no date is set yet for the next Central Valley Masters event, you can follow them on their Facebook page or visit their website at www.centralvalleymasters.com.

The Perfect Game by Steve Felege

A “Beatles Tribute” brought to you by: Carol “Mama” Mancini

YOU SAY GOODBYE.....Carol: Well Steve, it’s a sad day.Steve: Why do you say that? It’s spring! The sun is shining, birds are chirping.....Carol: Exactly! It’s time to say, “Goodbye!” to another bowling season. Doesn’t that bother you?Steve: Look at the bright side Carol; it’s been a good year. Thanks to Frank Weiler, a lot of your bowlers got serious about saying, “Adios!” to their old skills too.Carol: We certainly gave them a lot to think about. Didn’t we?Steve: We sure did. Do you think they took any of our advice seriously?Carol: Who knows? We’ll find out next season. Any final thoughts as we say, “So long!” to 2013-14?Steve: Just one. Every bowler needs to understand that they have room to improve, even the best of the best. Becoming a better bowler doesn’t mean going to the lanes and practicing what you already do well. It means saying, “Bon voyage!” to your comfort zone and trying new things.Carol: Like what?Steve: Like: -rolling games using different targets. -delivering shots with varying wrist positions. -starting closer to, and farther back from the foul line. -practicing at different centers. -buying that new ball you didn’t get for your birthday.Carol: Are you saying that experimenting makes you a better bowler? Steve: Absolutely! Trying new and different things makes everyone a more complete bowler, able to say “Sayonara!” to insecurity.Carol: That’s important!Steve: It sure is, but elevating your skills also means practicing things you do poorly.Carol: Like shooting the corner pins?Steve: Bingo! Every right hander hates seeing a ten-pin after making a good shot. Lefties hate the seven pin. The only way to bid “Farewell!” to hatred of those spares is to become proficient at making them. Carol: And the only way to become good at making them is.....Steve: Shoot at them a lot! Spend a whole game delivering both shots at nothing but the ten (or seven) pin. If you can rent a lane for an hour of “shadow bowling”, that’s even better.Carol: That’s frustrating when you’re used to practicing for high scores.Steve: I know it is, but “practice” scores are meaningless. They only matter during competition. High scores result if you can leave a corner pin then say, “Auf wiedersehen!” to it with your next shot.Carol: So the message here is......Steve: Remember your passion for the game. Don’t settle for your same old average! Say, “Alo-ha!” to mediocrity.

.....AND I SAY HELLO!Steve: So, are you still sad about the end of this season? Carol: Heck no! Say, “HELLOOO!” to summer leagues.Steve: Say, “Hello!” to new techniques.Carol: Say, “Bonjour!” to competence. Steve: Say, “Hola!” to confidence.Carol: Say, “G’day!” to your newfound game.Steve: You will never bowl the same.Carol: So just say, “YO!” to bowling fashion.Steve: And then say, “HEY!” to renewed passion.Carol: In case you think we’re being silly......Steve: We want YOU to be the “Most Improved!”..........Really!Carol: Think of all the respect you’ll get.Steve: Then say, “YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET!”Comments or question? Email them to us at: [email protected]

the PBA Eddie Elias, began with eight teams competing in a single-elimination bracket to deter-mine the winner. Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds were conducted in January at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., with the championship final conducted at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

BURBANK — Seven years ago, my husband stopped bowling. Just like that! Done. Finito. No more. Since then, it has been my mission to get him back on the lanes. Not an easy task, as he is a very determined man. Or should I say, just plain stubborn?

He’s a good bowler. He once bowled a 300! Unfortu-natelyitwasinpractice,buthedidit!Hehasaverified700series. Still, he claims to be mediocre, not good enough. I can only claim those titles in my dreams!

Well, this past week victory was mine and we went to buy him a new ball (he had given all of his away!). It just so happened I had ordered a new one for myself days before sowewere there together, getting fitted, ogling thenewshoe styles and yakking away with our ball man/coach.

Theoldtimescamefloodingback.Itwasexhilarating!Ourfirstpracticeshotswith thenewballswere tentativeat best but soon the rhythmswere flowingandwewereactually having fun. It felt awesome to have my best friend/partner back with me doing the sport for which I have such great passion.

The moral of this story is you really can go back home... even if the ‘house’ is your local bowling center.

Bowling News is proud to bring you....

The beginnings of most sports are shrouded in mystery, to put it mildly.

But there is no doubt that the father of organized pro-fessiional bowling was Eddie Elias, the one of a kind pio-neer who comes along only every century or so. To succeed at such undertakings, you must have unlimited energy, pa-tience and the lofty hopes of a dreamer who believes.

Eddie’s dream lives on, half a century after he came into the spotlight, convinced he would do what no one else had done, convinced he could convince all, even those who needed a little nudge, or a big push.

The young lawyer had to sway players, proprietors, press, manufacturers, sponsors — in short — the entire bowling industry — and the world outside of bowling.

No person ever did it better or did it at all before he came along. He created a tour where bowlers could earn alivingforthefirsttimethroughtheirtalentonthelanes, justassomanyotherathletesdidintheirchosenfield.Hebrought credibility to a sport that never had its due visabil-ity. He vaulted bowling to the heights of national network TV and top bowlers became household names because of the highly rated shows.

Elias spurred generations of bowlers into thinking they could make it big, and gave them what they needed, the opportunity. Even if they didn’t make it, they could try, and trying is a learning experience in itself.

He uplifted the status, not only of the most talented of bowlers, but all bowlers, and the perception that bowling is asportforall,fromyoungstersunderfivetooldsterspush-ing 100.

Though Elias left us in 1998 he remains in so many ways. His ideas are still used and memories of him inspire. Eddie always called the pro bowlers “his boys” but he helped every bowler and every group he could whenever he could, despite a heavy schedule with many of his clients fromallfields.

As Phil Donahue said, “Long before free agency, long before pro sports rose to billion-dollar levels, there was Big E., bargaining his heart out for big and small clients alike.”

Elias has many monuments to his life in bowling, his Hall of Fame elections, his citations from every group in the sport, his innovations that thrive.

Now there is the Edward G. Elias Bowling Center on the campusofTheUniversityofAkron, hisalmamater, afittingway to memorialize the life of Elias and his legacy.

His always caring wife, Peggy, and daughters Rainy and Annie, and many others have and continue to give the cen-ter their full support in every way.

The center is now in operation with the vitality and future plans Eddie would have loved. Future plans call for special bowling events for youth and various scholarship plans and any venture that will enhance the sport with particular at-tenton to the young people everywhere.

Donations are being accepted to develop the center’s future as a center of bowling, its history and traditions, and the values so well exhibited by one of the greatest names in bowling history — Eddie Elias.

Contributions, large or small, can be sent to The Univer-sity of Akron, Department of Development, Elias Bowling Center, Akron, OH 44325-2603.

This is the kind of giving that grows our sport. IDLE BOWLING ThOUGhTS

...Itisamazingthatpeoplefinditdifficulttounderstandwhy the merger that created the United States Bowling Congress has run into some sharp pebbles in smoothing the road. You can’t take more than 100 years of habits and experiences, millions of bowlers, hundreds of paid workers, hundreds of thousands of volunteer workers, a changing sportandbusiness, andexpectallthepiecestofittogethras quickly as a frist grader’s puzzle. Patience not only is needed, it is a must from all involved.

... Bowling balls are expensive, but they always were.Back in 1907 the newest rubber bowling balls sold for $15. For many, that was more than a week’s pay. And those good looking high top bowling shoes set you back any-wherefromtwotofivebucks,buttheylastedforyearsandyears.

... An old newspaper clipping, dated Oct. 25, 1897, reported that Detroit had four bowling leagues that year. In three of them “palm” balls were used, and in a newly formedsix teamcircuit thenew“finger”ballswereused. And here we are, 110 years later, and the rage in some areas is two handed palm bowllng.

... Watch the great instructors in action. They not only teach, they inspire.

... A very little boy told me about the match he had against one of his friends. It was close all the way until he knocked down a pin in the seventh frame to win out, 1-0.

... Good guys never finish last, not if they are goodenough.

by The Great ManciniDOWNEY — AMATEUR BOWLERS TOUR was the

target for LINDER INSURANCE this week. LINDER won game one by 76 pins and thought they were lined up but failed to take into consideration that Nicole’s 90 game was afluke;andwouldnothappenagain.

A.B.T. captured #2, #3 and totals to lead this round by one game. So these two teams will be matched again this coming Monday to duke it out one more time.

Look who’s watching the stats, hoping for a split at the top and a sweep for one of them ----- J.A.T. (14), PINO’S PIZZA (13), BOWLERS DEPOT (13).

For thirty-two weeks there has been pressure, now REAL pressure has teams leaping up the cashing ladder with each win; especially important to teams not making the roll-off. The guys have always professed they bowl the league for the competition, friendship, and bragging rights — money is 4th on the list.

THE PROFESSIONAL APPROACH spearheaded by Billy Myers Jr’s 670 jumped from 18th place last week to 7th this week.

On the reverse side, LOS ALTOS TROPHY dropped from 6th to 17th. These two teams changed places on the leader board and still came away friends!

On the U.S.OPEN pattern next week scores will drop, frustrationswillflare, ballswillbebanishedandgameswillbe won by smaller margins. Of the 288 games bowled this week, 204 were under average. YIKES!

Checking the side action, looks like Leonard Ruiz was the Kegel King Kasher, second pot with 247 (plus Advi-sors Pot) and a third game split with Dave Korach.

Zack Jellsey tucked away the bucks for game one and Larry Campbell took some Advise and tossed a winning 238.

PINO’S PIZZA tallied up the high series of the night on 604 Ramon Torres, 576 Chuck Weeks, 553 Josh Tajiri and 642 by Leonard Ruiz. They played ZUNIGA’S PLUMBING which had a 2326 but only won ONE from PINO’S. Let’s give the guys their dues! Vic Fabris 583, David Cogswell 524, Eric Espinoza 595 and Greg Neuer 624 just ran into the best of the night.

Congratulations to Scott Poddig, named California Bowling Proprietor of the Year!
