Merry Christmas NORWALK — AT&T U- verse, AT&T’s cable network serving nearly three million wireless subscribers, debuted a three-part feature on 2010 PBA Tournament of Champi- ons winner Kelly Kulick on Wednesday. The magazine- style feature profiles Kulick’s historic victory at Red Rock Lanes in January 2010 and includes a segment about her family life which reveals the values and dedication that have become hallmarks of her bowling career. A third part, which was shot during the PBA World Series of Bowling, basically asks, what’s next? The AT&T U-verse Sports feature, which can be viewed at no cost on AT&T U-verse’s web site, not only provides unique insight into today’s most accomplished woman AT&T U-Verse Sports Airs Three-Part Feature of Kelly Kulick bowler, but presents profes- sional bowling in a highly fa- vorable light as the demanding sport it is. The AT&T U-verse SPORTS presentation can be found at http://uverseonline. att.net/uverse/exclusive. It also airs on AT&T U-verse’s cable network and on AT&T’s mobile phone system. Kulick will return to Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas Jan. 15-22 to defend her title, but this time the stakes are much higher: $250,000 to win. And the competition will be even more intense. Every PBA member who has ever won a title is eligible to compete for shares of the record $1 mil- lion prize fund. The finals will return to ABC Sports – after a 14-year absence – on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. PATCHOGUE—Two-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour champion Mike Fagan of Patchogue, N.Y., joined a group of stars from a number of sports at the 13th annual March of Dimes New York Chapter’s Chairman’s Club Dinner on Dec. 2 at the Mar- riott East Side Hotel in New York. The “Champions for Ba- bies” dinner brought together 200 people from the fields of business, retail, insurance, sports, and more to raise mon- ey for the March of Dimes’ programs of research, commu- nity services, education, and advocacy. The evening included si- lent and live auctions, sport- themed food stations and in- teractive sports areas hosted Mike Fagan Join Sports Stars for New York March of Dimes Benefit by star athletes. Fagan manned a Wii bowling station where he challenged other sports stars to games of Wii Bowling “even though I’m not very good at it,” he said. The dinner was hosted by CBS sportscaster Greg Gum- bel. Among the athletes attend- ing were Carl Banks (NFL), Gerry Cooney (boxing), Dar- ryl Dawkins (NBA), Gigi Fernandez (tennis), Jacquelyn Frazier-Lyde (boxing), Cullen Jones (swimming), Bob Lanier (NBA), Doug Mauch (PGA), Dikembe Mutombo (NBA), Nicole Powell (WNBA), JoJo Starbuck (figure skating), and Kerri Strug (gymnastics). “It was a special night for a great cause,” Fagan said. “I’m proud to support the March of Dimes.” BALTIMORE—Danny Wiseman is the Lumber Liqui- dators PBA Tour’s No. 1 auto racing fan, but he could only manage a seventh-place finish in the Celebrity Chase Tracker fantasy game, in which a group of noted celebrities tried to pick winners during the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Indianapolis Colts tight end Dallas Clark won the celebrity “pick ‘em” contest over inter- nationally-known chef Emeril Lagasse. The Gracious Few Danny Wiseman Knows Bowling, But Does He Know Nascar Racing? rock band finished third. Wiseman did finish ahead of such celebrities as chef Mario Batali, author Janet Evanowich, former New York Yankees outfielder Bernie Wil- liams, and former American Idol singing star Katharine McPhee among others. “I should have just gone with (five-time NASCAR points champion) Jimmy John- son,” lamented Wiseman, who finished third in the contest a year earlier. RENO – Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore., dominated the match play finals Thursday to win the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Sta- dium. Smith, a former PBA Tour exempt player, returned to the center where he won his only title – the 2003 United States Bowling Congress Masters – to post an 11-5 match play record for a 37-game total of 8,290 pins, including match play bonus pins, for a 25-pin victory over Tom Hess of Ur- bandale, Iowa. As Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitation- al champion, Smith earned $6,000 and an automatic “Elite” field berth in the $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas Jan. 15-22. “It’s been awhile since I won against a field with this many bowlers from across the country,” Smith said. “It’s a good feeling.” Smith declined the oppor- tunity to compete for one of seven exemptions to bowl on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour during the 2011-12 sea- son. I’ll bowl in the Tour- nament of Champions and the USBC Masters, and maybe the U.S. Open. We’ll see how I do in the Tournament of Champi- ons and Masters first. “I’ve bowled in the Tour- nament of Champions before,” he added. “I’ve done OK. Not as well as I’d like, but it’s nice to have a spot in the Elite field, which means I won’t have to bowl the qualifying round. It’s without a doubt the biggest tournament of the year, but I’ll just try to be patient and bowl well. I know I’m as good as anyone else when I’m playing well, so we’ll see what hap- pens.” The PBA Regional Players Invitational was open to play- ers who qualified among the competition point leaders in their respective regions during the 2009-10 season. Lil Wayne, Nelly, Reggie Bush Join Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational Field Hip-hop, NFL, NBA stars team up with

PBA champions for Super Bowl Sunday telecastNEW ORLEANS, La. (Dec. 20, 2010) – Celebrity A-listers competed on the lanes with profes-

sional bowlers for charity last week. Hip-hop giants Lil Wayne and Nelly, along with New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush joined five PBA champions and host Chris Paul of the New Or-leans Hornets for the third annual Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational at Riverboat Lanes on the New Orleans Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.

The pro/celebrity doubles event, which supports Paul’s charitable CP3 Foundation, will air on ESPN on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. ET, for the third straight year as part of the PBA’s TV schedule.

Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour stars participating were PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber and Norm Duke, former PBA Rookies of the Year Jason Belmonte and Rhino Page, and former PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, all members of Storm Products Pro Staff.

The standing-room-only crowd consisted of personnel from all four branches of the military and their families from the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.

“The Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational has grown to be one of our most anticipated events every year,” said PBA Deputy Commissioner Tom Clark. “Chris and his superstar friends love bowling with our stars and the PBA is proud to partner with the Paul family on behalf of the CP3 Foundation, which continues to brighten kids’ lives.”

In the doubles competition, Weber paired with fellow St. Louis native Nelly, Duke teamed up with Lil Wayne, and Malott and Bush were an imposing pairing. Belmonte and Paul partnered in an effort to defend their title. The teams competed in a stepladder finals for the unique Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational trophy. Page took on the four celebrities in a new “Super Clash” shootout to kick off the festivities.

NBA superstar LeBron James and the PBA’s Jason Couch teamed up to win the inaugural Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational in 2008. Other celebrities who have competed in the event’s history include Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Ludacris, Lamar Woodley, Jack Del Rio and Hines Ward.

Paul founded his CP3 Foundation in 2005 as a tribute to his late grandfather and the Winston-Salem, N.C., community where he grew up and starred at Wake Forest. The foundation has provid-ed funding for activities ranging from a scholarship program to food drives to recreational support programs for underprivileged children in both Winston-Salem and New Orleans.

Paul, an avid bowler who frequently refers to bowling as his “second-favorite sport,” is on his way to another NBA All-Star season. Both Lil Wayne and Nelly are Grammy-award winning artists with new recordings currently at the top of the Billboard charts. Former USC star Bush helped the Saints win their first Super Bowl title earlier in 2010.

“What better way to get ready for the big game on Super Bowl Sunday than watch this spectacu-lar PBA event earlier in the day on ESPN?” Clark said. “Not only are the bowlers and celebrities great personalities, they share a love of the sport of bowling and competition at the highest level.”

LAKE FOREST—He may be little but he sure is mighty! Sam Grayson is only eight years old but his desire and determination to be a good bowler is heads above any bowler this young, that I have ever encountered, in my life time. Usually bowlers are a lot older than eight and have a few seasons of bowling under their belts before they set their sights on shooting a 200 game and a 490 series.

Sam and his brother, Jack, started bowling less than a year ago when their parents, Joe and Laurie took them to Forest Lanes for their first family-bowling outing.

Both boys enjoyed the ex-perience and shortly thereafter they joined the Saturday morn-

Sam Grayson, Eight-Year-Old Junior Bowler, Shoots 202 game at Forest Lanes

ing junior league.Approximately 25 weeks

later, Sam holds the highest average in the Junior divi-sion of kids between 8 and 12, throws a left handed hook, and displays the form and fol-low through of a professional. Need I mention that his team is

in first place? Sam and Jack also golf

with their father and Sam is a great baseball player while Jack’s passion is trains. Not toy trains, mind you, but an-tique trains and sophisticated engines.

Recently Jack and an adult partner won 2nd place in the “Little Gobbler” Fund Raiser Tournament. Great Job guys!!!

Forest Lanes Junior Bowl-ing program has three divi-sions; Bumpers; ages 3 to 7

Juniors; ages 8 to 12Majors; ages over 12

Bring your children and put them in the league. Maybe they can become as good as Sam.

avid bowler and veteran. As a former deployed veteran, these phone cards are a much appreciated gift. Thank you to CBW for all their efforts and support to our deployed service members and their families.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

TOP DEAF BOWLING STORIES OF 2010Looking back to the beginning of the year and from there to year’s end, this writer regretted

having missed getting the results of Eastern Association of Deaf Bowlers and Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association tournaments and other deaf tournaments, so for the top deaf bowling stories of the 2010 year he had to pick from what had been printed in Bowling News.

1. MALUCCI’S 243 AVE. LED SNUSBC ASSOCIATION FOR 2ND YEAR IN ROWThis story about the remarkable feat of a deaf bowler leading his local bowling association for

2nd year in row. The year before during 2008-09 season Carl Malucci, Las Vegas left-hander rolled 246 average and was surprised to get the top average honors from his local SNUSBC association. This feat never happened to a deaf or hearing-impaired bowler before. In recent 2009-2010 season Malucci finished with 243 and 241 averages in his two leagues and was doubtful of leading his association again. This writer thought so too but we were wrong. Malucci got the honor again, a remarkable accomplishment of a deaf bowler for 2nd year in row.

2. CANADIAN GEORGE HALAS ROLLED BACK TO BACK 300. A Canadian hearing-impaired right-hander George Halas became first of his country’s deaf and

hearing-impaired bowlers to roll back to back 300 and asked this writer if any US deaf bowlers had done this feat. This writer replied yes, Kenneth DeGroff had done it twice that got him in the USBC record book. Halas, a three-time member of Deaf Team Canada rolled his 300s in first and 2nd games in his home league on one pair of lanes and moved to another pair to finish with 199-193 for 992. He could have hit a 800 series if he stayed on the first pair. Nevertheless being first of his country deaf bowlers is quite a feat.

3. MALUCCI HIT 795-723-815 FOR DEAF RECORD HIGH 2333 ALL-EVENTSCarl Malucci, Las Vegas became the first deaf or hearing-impaired bowler to break the 2300

all-events barrier when he rolled 795 in team, 723 in doubles and 815 in singles for a gigantic 2333 total all events in So. Nevada-California Deaf Bowling Ass-n tournament. Massive as the score seems but with his zero handicap in this 100% handicap tournament it placed 2nd in all-events, his 795 only helped his foursome team to first place and his 815 which is also a record in singles placed him 2nd too.

4. SO. CALIF. DEAF TRAVELING LEAGUE HONORS THIS WRITER FOR 50 YEARS SERVICESo. Calif. Deaf Traveling League ended its 50th year with a banquet honoring its retiring founder

and only secretary treasurer Connie Marchione for his 50 years of service. Marchione who bowled in each of the entire 50 years, was the only one did so of the 309 deaf and hearing-impaired bowlers who did bowled for just a year or more. The league started with 6 teams of trios and grew through hardships up to 12 teams and down to a singles league for a season and back to 6 teams of trios.

5. MALUCCI’S 4SOME MIXED TEAM SET DEAF RECORDS WITH 2811 AND 1009As Carl Malucci goes, so does his foursome mixed team following his lead for the past two

years in making new records. This time last January in its Red Rock Lanes league his team of Melchora Lee, Joey Harris, Barrett Lee and the maestro, himself hit games of 943-878-990 for new deaf mixed team record 2811. Later on the team replaced its record of 990 game with 1009.

Comments? If any of you readers disagree with the above because you knew or read about a deaf bowler making better achievement or feat than above during 2010 year, kindly let this writer know at [email protected]. It will be appreciated.

LAS VEGAS

TRAVEL LEAGUEBy Alice

Meglemre

ANAHEIM — The annual Christmas pot luck and op-tional gift exchange headlined Monday’s bowling at Lin-brook Bowl. As usual, it was super. Thanks to Roberta and her helper, Mary Meglemre, for getting the buffet tables ready and thanks to all who participated. Charlie “Santa” Williams did his usual good job taking care of the gift ex-change and there were lots of goodies to choose from for those who got early strikes. Bettie Wells gets the honor of being the bowler getting the last gift but this scribe came close. I finally got my strike while there was still three gifts to choose from.

Kathy Parrish led the honor roll Monday with218-583, fol-lowed by Betty Phillips 564, Nancy Soto 210-541, Cyndie Martin 525, Pris Mauricio 513 and Bernice Williams 508. Top team, Fountain Bowl #2, lost a couple of games Monday now posting 33 wins, followed by Cal Bowl #1, 29; Bowling News 28; Keystone #1, 26; Keystone #2, 25.2; Cal #2, 25; Cerritos, 22 and the rest of the league trails with 18, 17, 16.2, 16 and 14 wins.

Erma Palmer’s son brought Erma to Linbrook Monday for her annual visit to the league and she’s hopeful the medics will approve her trip to Vegas this year. Another welcome visitor was Martha Under-wood and she brought me a 57 year old copy of the Bowling News that contained one of my columns. She passed her 90th birthday but she sure has aged well and looks 20 years younger.

A special thanks to Betty Phillips and Barbara Bishop for providing candy canes for every bowler. In addition to being a great sheet service, they provide weekly handicap and scratch sidepots.

When you read this, Christ-mas is Saturday and we hope everybody has a good one. Now we look forward to the New Year and hope it will be filled with health, wealth, hap-piness and lots of good bowl-ing scores for each and every one of you!

NEXT WEEK: 9:30 A.M. Monday, December 27 at Lin-brook.

by Aimee Gomez

DOWNEY—Sysco’s Vernon Adams 269-247-255/771 and Charlie Kinstler 248-268-246/762 showed just how much they want to win the round, leading their team to four wins over Bowlers De-pot. Jeff Carr 278-202/674, Steve Gurrieri 244-215/656, and Raul Rosales helped their team pull out the second game win, but they did not get close the other two games. Sysco now has 26 wins and sits in a great position with one week left in the round while Bowlers Depot dropped to third with 22.

On the next pair, Brylaw Accounting’s Billy Myers Jr. 244-201-248/693 and Charles Zelaya 231-224/650 did the same thing, taking four from Junior Amateur Tour, whose Aimee Gomez 244/614 had the lone sixer. With the four wins, Brylaw moves into second with 24 wins and will challenge Sysco for the round as Junior Amateur Tour fell to fifth with 20 wins.

Storm Products used Leonard Ruiz 230-219-257/706, Paul Varela 300-215/703 and Ramon Tor-res 269/642 to take four from Katie Jakes Bar and Grill’s Jon Brandon 247-200-241/688, Kevin Yamauchi 212-258/662 and Matt Cormack 213-211/608. Storm moved up to fourth with 21.5 wins and Katie Jakes dropped to sixth with 19.

Zavala’s Taqueria took four from Clyde’s Video Games thanks to Jeff Garrison 214-235-236/685 and Paul Danforth 258/611, while Ramiro Garcia of Clyde’s put up the lone six on his team, 216-224/616.

Pro Approach won four from Linder Insurance. Charles Weeks of Pro Approach led the pair, 225-225-262/715 and got help from teammate Alex Garcia 210-221/621. Gary Duran 237-221/650 and Aaron Hodges 212-212/617 of Linder broke six, but only pulled out the first game victory.

Threadworks took advantage of bowling four on three against Herzog Insurance and swept using Eric Snow 246-208/640 and Ryan Okamoto 243/605. Lee Liu 231-230/640 shot six for Herzog.

Arnold Cheesman 207-257/656 and Juan Camarena 205-221/608 led Bowlium to a sweep over ABTA.

In the final matchup, Key Container started off the night looking good thanks to Ezzard Jones’ front ten 287, but that turned out to be their only win against Tifco. Jones led Key Container 287-212/657 and Tom Jackson led Tifco 206-226/626.

Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas. Take care and see you all soon.

Juanita made her mother, Alberta Stoute ‘s famous Mac & Cheese and Rob brought some fabulous divinity. Until the first week of 2011, Happy New Year.

SCHROEDER & SCHROEDER Are Moving Upby Frank Weiler

MURRIETA — Schroeder and Schroeder isn’t a law firm. No, Schroeder and Schroeder is a father and son bowling team. DEREK SCHROEDER and his dad STEVE are teammates on the “A FAMILY TREE FLORIST” trio bowling team, at Cal Oaks Bowl.

They compete on Thursday night in the 640 Scratch League, and until recently were hitting more low notes then a musician playing a base drum. Then suddenly Schroeder and Schroeder went from averaging 200 each to 240 each.

Within a few weeks, they moved from the stairs above the basement to the penthouse door. Watch out team number eight! Last week Derek rolled a 791 (213 - 290 - 288) with a four pin separating him from a 800 series. Dad Steve posted a solid 680 as the Schroeder Squad went 24 - 0. Derek’s big series came on the heels of last weeks 749.

PAUL NILSEN led his team to twenty points (20 - 4) with a 300 and 781 (246 - 300 - 235).MATT MURTISHAW made the 7 - 10 split on his way to 709 (213 - 279 - 217). By the way, it’s that time of year again

for all of us to thank the Bowling News for keeping us informed and bowling wise.
