Four PWBA Players Who Got Snubbed In The Draft

by Lucas Wiseman

1. Kelly KulickA lot of fans were stunned that Kelly Kulick was

passed over in the draft despite being ranked just 19th on the PWBA Tour points list in 2019. If you look at her ca-reer as a whole, Kulick without question deserved to be on a team. With five major wins on the women’s tour and even a major win on the predominately men’s tour, Kulick would have been a solid option for either team. The 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions winner even has past ex-perience in the PBA League having competed for the NYC Kingpins. But in a draft that seemed to be more about what the players have done lately, Kulick was left out.

The draft to determine the 10 PWBA players who would make up the two new all-female teams in the 2020 PBA League had virtually no surprises. Miami and Phoenix managers Bob Learn Jr. and Kim Terrell-Kearney took the Top 10 players as ranked on the 2019 PWBA points list, although not in order. That said, there are a lot of players who were hoping to be drafted who were left out of the league this time around.

Here’s a look at four of the biggest snubs from Tuesday’s draft from FloBowling Senior Editor Lucas Wiseman.

2. Shannon PluhowskyIt’s clear the managers on the men’s teams put an

emphasis on having a left-hander on the roster. Six out of the 10 men’s team have a left-hander on them with many of those being selected in May’s draft. Given left-handers have had success at Bayside Bowl, home of the PBA League, you would think Shannon Pluhowsky, the top-ranked lefty on the board, would have been selected. Pluhowsky, who has admittedly underperformed since the PWBA returned, is a major champion, has loads of Team USA experience and was a standout collegiate player. Not drafting Pluhowsky was a major missed opportunity by both Miami and Phoenix.

3. Diana ZavjalovaIf you look at it simply based on 2019 performance,

maybe Zavjalova didn’t deserve to be drafted. But when you look at the bigger picture, Zavjalova has been one of the best players on the PWBA Tour since it relaunched in 2015. She’s a two-time USBC Queens champion with four overall titles (only Kulick had more among those undrafted) and she had a stellar collegiate career at Web-ber International. If you remove her 17th position on the PWBA points list in 2019 and look at the four previous years, Zavjalova’s average spot on the points list was sev-enth – a strong indicator.

4. Rocio RestrepoLike Zavjalova, the story is much the same for Rocio

Restrepo. The Colombia sensation had a brutal year in 2019, finishing in 27th on the points list. But you can’t just look at the stats to tell the full story. Restrepo missed many events due to health issues and that prevented her from making the impact on the PWBA Tour we’ve come to expect. She’s also a four-time PWBA champion and from 2015-2018 finished an average of 6.5 on the PWBA points list. Restrepo was tremendously undervalued at 27th on the 2019 points list and deserved more consideration.

The California Bowling Writers has adopted Operation Freedom Paws! Operation Freedom Paws nonprofit organization was founded by “California Bowler and Veteran” Mary Cortani in 2010 that has provided service dogs and training support to veterans and others who suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, complex PTSD, traumatic brain injury and other physical, neurological, psychological and mobility needs. According to experts, service dogs help empower people with disabilities to live quality lives. Operation Freedom Paws carefully matches cli-ents with their specially chosen four-legged com-panions, most of which come from rescue shel-ters. The partners then begin a 48-week program which trains the clients to train their own dogs. At the end of the program, they’re certified together as service dog teams. TOURNAMENT - Circle Lanes w/Bo Burton (flyer)13-Plus Hours of Bowling Memories with Nelson Burton Jr.

A few weeks ago, I penned an article about the backup ball that Anthony Simonsen showcased on national television during the Summer Clash at Bowlero Lanes in Jupiter, Florida. Anthony stole the show for the first eight rounds of the tournament brandishing the left-hand motion delivery that had not been displayed since Hall of Fame members Dick Weber and Nelson Burton Jr. flaunted the style way back in 1971.

The smooth style of Nelson Burton Jr. in the photo that I provided with the article reminded me of a time when we first met at AMF Circle Lanes in Bloomington, Illinois. My usual cohort, Dick Weber, was unavailable for the Grand Reopening Celebration that we had planned to follow after the installation of AMF MagicScore, so Dick suggested that I give Bo (Burton’s nickname) a call.

Burton could not have been more congenial and put on a grand show for the better part of thirteen hours before the hometown keglers. It all started with a Youth Bowling Instruction Clinic at 9:00AM, followed by a Bowling Exhibition and Tournament at 11:30AM with all the local youth bowlers. At 2:00PM we had an autograph session for one half hour, and then a combined adult and youth squad of tournament bowlers at 2:30PM. We finished off the day with an Adult Bowling Instruction Clinic at 5:00PM, and the final adult squad of tournament bowlers at 7:00PM.

After all of that bowling, I remember Bo saying something to the effect of, “Weber warned me about your events.” Once again, I had forgotten to offer Burton a break, even for lunch, and apologized to the Hall of Famer, but just like Weber he was gracious throughout and could not have been a better representative for AMF.

During the Bowling Exhibition at 11:30AM, I had a chance to bowl with Mr. Burton. We were both rolling in the 220’s for the first couple of games when Bo asked me how I was playing the lanes. I was a bundle of nerves but managed to spurt something out that must have made sense to the St. Louis native, and he proceeded to roll a near perfect 279 in the final game. Perhaps he was just toying with me the whole time… just like Mr. Weber!

When I got back to AMF World Headquarters in Westbury, New York later that week, I was told by Woody Woodruff’s secretary that he would like to see me in his office. Oh no, I’ve done it again, I thought to myself, as I remembered not even offering Burton a lunch break during the 13-plus hours of instruction clinics and tournament squads.

However, as was the case with Weber on so many occasions, I was rewarded with my tenacity of putting on a good show for AMF, when Woody presented me with a handwritten note from Mr. Burton:

When Weber Wasn’t There, I Could Always Count On Boby Dave Williams

August 27th at AMF Circle Lanes in Bloomington, Illinois - You’ve got a good man there! See ya in the fall.

Best, BoI miss those days at AMF. It was a special time and we

all worked together like one big family.

RE: COVID-19 Related Closure of Bowling Alleys

My name if Frank P. Durante and I am a league bowler. I used to bowl two leagues and one practice day each week. But now I am in my early 70’s and because of bad arthritis in my right knee, I am only able to bowl one league and I do not know how much longer I will be able to do that. I use a knee brace and at times need to rely on a cane to help me get around. There have been days just taking a step was an effort to overcome the pain. Bowling is how I got my exercise and it kept me moving. Now with the COVID-19 pan-demic all I do is stay inside and try to stay safe. The lady I am with is also in her 70’s. We only go shopping once a week during the senior hours and buy just what we need for the week versus over stocking like many other people. We wear a mask at all times when around other people.

Bowling the one league is the only exercise I get. I enjoy watching it on TV or being a spectator at the bowling alley. But most of all, I love being up on the lane bowling. I am not a pro bowler but can bowl with the best of them. Bowling, I have good days and bad days but even when I was still working a bad day bowling was better than a good day at work. The only other time we get out each week is when one of us has a medical appointment. I have not gotten a haircut since before the first quarantine. Now you have some of my background.

What I want to say as far as spreading the Coronavirus at this point is that it is the

people not masking in public. Outside of proper hand washing and contact precautions, I do not know that social distancing makes a difference if you are masked. According to research I have read, if you are not masked, even six feet of social distancing is possibly not enough, and it could be as much as fifteen feet.

The bottom line, as you have expressed in multiple press interviews, is that it all comes down to wearing masks and/or face shields when out in public when not being able to maintain proper social distancing. Another problem is when eating and drinking in public around other people. So now it comes down to the question of why the sud-den rise in COVID-19 cases? The answer is simple, groups or gatherings of people not wearing masks and/or face shields are open to being infected and infecting others. The list includes the following events just to mention a few: protests, riots, sporting events,

by Frank P. Durante

and other venues where large groups congregate without proper social distancing and without required masks or face shields, as well as other large gatherings by groups, families and individuals for special life events that do not take the necessary precautions.

The problem is not with the league bowlers because we are required to wear masks and/or face shields covering our nose and mouth at all times. Prior to the first quaran-tine, our league had fourteen teams with three bowlers per team. After the quarantine was lifted, we ended up with ten teams with a total of 30 bowlers in our league. At the bowling alley, masks and/or face shields are required to be worn at all times and everyone has their temperature checked. Additionally, two lanes are left empty in be-tween team pairs to maintain some spacing and social dis-tancing standards. Our league has also ordered enough face shields for the whole league for the entire bowling season at an approximate cost of $8 each, which I believe is small price to pay for keeping everyone safe and be-ing permitted to continue bowling the season. I also think there should be no food or drink served, especially alco-holic beverages, except for bottled water or necessary food for special needs for certain health conditions. There is a main COVID-19 test site just up the street from our bowl-ing alley, perhaps it would be possible to have one of the testers come to the bowling alley once a month to test the league bowlers as an additional precaution. In addition, I believe the leagues should mandate that if you do not want to wear a mask you will not be permitted into the bowling alley or to bowl on the league. If a bowler refuses to mask or leave, then the team will forfeit the game and not be awarded any points.

In closing, I am asking that you please think about what I have said and give careful consideration to reopening the bowling alleys for league bowling only, which is an organized activity with rules and a code of conduct very different from recreational bowling. I do not feel the need to protest taking this issue to the streets or demonstrations but hope that this personal appeal on behalf of my league and our bowling alley will achieve the same result. I am a Vietnam veteran and served my country as a U.S. Marine with pride and am now asking for your reasonable consid-eration in return.

Thank you for your time reading my letter and for your consideration.

For the love of bowling, Frank P. Durante

Ciminelli continued from page 1ranks up there for meaning the most; this is near the top. The loyalty, the support, the family type love that I got from friends close to me throughout my struggles and es-pecially recently when it got real bad, I don’t even have words for that.”

The move to a full-time construction job is a natural fit for Ciminelli, who according to his bio on the PBA’s web-site holds a degree in construction engineering and project management from Erie Community College.
