A Life Cut Way Too ShortAlan Thompson, Orange County

Board Member Passes....by Joy McGregor

Alan Thompson passed away Friday, August 28th due to complications from recent surgery. He was only 59 years old. He was a “dyed in the wool” board member. He was elected director to the OCBA board in 1990 and moved up the ranks to the office of vice president. After our merger, he was elected as a director to the OCUSBC board. In 2002 Alan was the proud recipient of the envious Jim Pontius, Director of the Year award for his commitment and continued support of bowling. Alan was also the OCUSBC Lane Inspection Chairman and just loved the “very” early am trips to certify lanes; he enjoyed putting the “Stamp of Approval”, mostly, on the centers’ certification form. When the office owned the famous Bowling Trailer -- you know, the great fun draw at the Orange County Fair for many, many years ... well, Alan worked that too! He was fondly known as “OC Bowling Council Trailer Person.” Alan worked part time at the Orange County Association office for a number of years until his most recent health problems. His forte was working on computers and that was “His Job” at all our tournaments, along with working the popular bracket table.

A little known fact about Alan -- he loved country music and line dancin’. I don’t know if he owned the traditional black hat and boots but I understand he could boot scoot with the best of ‘em. But we will always remember Alan for his love of bowling and his promotion of the sport which he did oh-so-well!

Alan inherited his love of our sport from his dear mother Al-ice who was our champion volunteer and just the sweetest lady; so well thought of in Orange County that she was honored with a special appreciation award November 19th, 2005 at our Hall of Fame Ceremony. Like mother, like son. She preceded Alan in death October 15th, 2006.

Alan is survived by his daughter Alishea who lives in Ari-zona and three brothers, Ray of California, Randy of Colorado Springs, Co., and Curt who resides in Seattle, Wa. There are no services planned at this time. Sympathy cards may be sent to the Thompson family in care of OCUSBC, 13896 Harbor Blvd., #5-A, Garden Grove, Ca. 92843.

I don’t know what Alan’s favorite country song was but I think Garth Brooks’ famous rendition of “The Dance” is so very fitting and a touching send off ... You will be remembered Alan!

DOWNEY—Our first trip to Del Rio was great and the change to 10:30 a.m. was not bad at all, actually some oth-ers, besides me, thought so too.

We were pleased to per-sonally meet and say thanks to Dean Lopez, at the Del Rio desk when we arrived, for the super job he does typeset-ting our weekly column at the Bowling News. Also, league sponsor Carol Mancini who ar-rived before we finished bowl-ing and we also thanked her too for her continued league support.

Scoring was super and sev-eral high marks changed on the sheet but we won’t report them until the league settles down after Labor Day. If you miss bowling next Monday, you can make up for it with a free game on Saturday, Sep-tember 5, when USBC fea-tures it’s “Back to bowling” event nation wide. On that day any and everyone may bowl a FREE GAME in participating centers. Officials expect it to surpass the millions who par-ticipated last year. Call your favorite bowling establish-ment for further details.

Five teams are tied with 6 wins for first place and indi-vidual scoring honors spot-lights Jamie Vallier 218-596, followed by Myrt Owens 223-576, Vi Wilson 203-563, Bert Martinez, first week back in the league after a couple years absence, 562, Margo McClain 215-541, Dee Phipps 203-537 and Shanta Pittman 531, Doris Lewis 529, Aresia McGee 518, Karen Mauricio 515, Dynasty Williams 510, HedySchoner 215-507, Wanda Weaver 500, Kathy Parrish 210 and Char-ron McKnight 202.

When the league returns to bowl on September 14 at Val-ley View, we will be greeted by new GM Bob Edwards. We will miss Ann, who transferred to another AMF center, but she filled in all the details to Bob about the Vegas league and he says he’s looking forward to meeting us. Valley View has been on the schedule as long as it’s been open and that’s many years.

POT POURRI: Thank you to the bowler who brought a big box of avocados from the lucky ones who got some be-fore they vanished. Sorry I did not learn her name but they were appreciated by those who got some. Also, we got a phone call from the past last week from Lois Nankervis. She bowled in the league many years ago and even when she had to quit, she remained on the sub list. If she failed to get a ride with someone, she would call a taxi to transport her from her Wilmington home to where we were scheduled to bowl. Gee, I think it was more than 20 years ago since we saw her and we are delighted to hear from her. She is still bowling and sends best wishes to those who remember her.

NEXT BOWLING DATE: 10 a.m. Monday, September 14 at Valley View. A remind-er that the Las Vegas Charter bus/hotel $75 deposit is due September 28. The $100 bal-ance will be due February 1. Everything stays the same as preceding years except the date, which is being scheduled the last weekend of March be-cause Easter falls on the first weekend of April.

Kevin Gannon & Jeff Garrison Win S.S.T at Cal Bowl

LAKEWOOD—You knew this was going to be a special tournament when Corky De Maio opened with 1069 for his first 4 games and Herman Ferguson closed with 823 for his last 3. Andy Clark and Kevin Gannon each had a 300 Saturday and Kevin had another Sunday. Mike Rausch led the Super Seniors qualifying with a plus 429, and it took plus 223 to qualify.

Herman Ferguson led the Seniors with a plus 402 and it took plus 224 to qualify. Ferguson was unable to hold off Jeff Garrison Sunday who won all his matches to take the Senior Title. The SST would like to thank the Southwest Carpenters for leading the fight for the Labor Day Holiday and for the added money for this pre Labor Day Tournament.

Over next stop will be October 3 and 4 at Cal Oaks Bowl in Murrieta. This will be a doubles tournament and one team mem-ber must be 55. Prepaid entries are eligible for the drawing for the Brunswick Ball. Floyd Clay Director SST

“Iron Mike” Wins $1,622 Match Series at Friendly Hills (L—R) Mike Benavides had a 582 Match Series which was drawn for the Big Pot and he happily took home a nice pot of $1,622. He is holding future ABTA Member (his cousin) Maddix Aquino, at right is ABTA Director Bobbie who offers her congratulations. Best $2.00 entry he has ever had says “Iron Mike”.

Dancel “299” at Friendly HillsAnthony Dancel fired a “299” game in the semis at Friendly Hills Lanes leaving a 9 pin on his final shot. He will reaceive Sapcial Awards from the ABTA for his fine feat. His dad Bert (ABTA Member) was quite proud!

N O RWA L K — P a t r i c i a Lin stepped up and won five straight matches and finally edging the top seed Anthony Dancel in the title game to win her first ABTA Title, and take home a tidy $1,600 for her suberb effort.

The scoring was a tough shot put out by Friendly Hills and very fair also. It was an adjusted tournament shot for our event. Making the cut were Men +46 and the ladies +8 to make the semis and also added were Super Seniors Ping Tu-bera, Tom Dahl, Lonzell Bur-nett and Bobbie Mc Collum.

A fine turnout of 272 bowl-ers saw 67 Semifinalists take the floor, of which all would cash and the top 16 to advance to the single elim finals with 3 women min guaranteed to the top 16.

The scoring was conten-tious with a young man from Pomona Anthony Dancel fir-ing a big 299 scratch game to lead the final at +136. In sec-ond place was Joseph Micheri at +129. So Anthony will sit out and bowl for the title. Mi-cheri to enter into the second round of the top 16 finals. It took a +45 Men and +28 for the 3 guaranteed women to make the top 16 Single Elims.

Gerald Sanchez, Ceasar Marcella, Cecilia Ling, Hoi Kwong Chan, Mark Fisser, Jason Buenviaje and Frank Skelly lose out. They received checks of $115 each in 10-16th places.

Round two had James Samson, Julie Nguyen, Marv

Patricia Lin is ABTA Champion at Friendly Hills (L–R) Marvin Crowder 4th, Anthony Dancel (runner up) who also fired a big “299” game, “Champion” Patricia Lin $1,600, Joseph Micheri Jr. 3rd, and James Samson 5th.

Round three saw Patricia Lin whack Derek Lee 223-191. Joseph Micheri the same to Tony Tang 243-226. Tony and Derek were 4th and 5th with fine bowling and $135 with Patricia and Joseph to meet for the right to bowl Dan-cel for the title.

The semi-final match was on. Patricia out bowled Mi-cheri as he could not carry. It was Patricia in a 209-188 win and Joseph was 3rd and $210 with Patricia on the way to the title game. Joseph bowled very well!

The title game was on Anthony elected to lead off, and did so with a spare and the split in frame 2. Patricia split, spared then opened and struck. After Dancel doubled in frames 5-6 it was very close but he then chopped the 1-3-6,and they both opened in frame 7. He would need a double to win the title and went light Brooklyn leaving a solo five pin and the title went to the pretty lady from Alham-bra and a nice $1,600 also! A nice win by a very nice lady. Patricia is petite in stature but bowled LARGE at Friendly Hills for sure. She is well liked by all who know her and is very Deserving. Congrats Patricia.

Great bowling By Antho-ny Dancel (One of the Good Guys) who came so close. He really is bowling well! The same with Joseph Micheri!

ABTA Notes: Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Marvin Gal-sim Sr. +155 Men and The-resa Fiore led the gals +86. They will get paid entries to any regular event for the fine bowling.

The Doubles were headed by Marvin Galsim Sr. and Vuong Do 1444 and $180. We paid 32 places and a great $2,310 in the $5 doubles.

The Match Game was UN-matched at a 272 game drawn by Galsim! We will have a $3,500 Match Game this weekend at West Covina with the balance going to a reserve pot. There is already $1,595 in the pot!

The Match Series was Matched at Friendly Hills, by “Iron Mike” Benavides 582 series got him $1,612 for a $2.00 entry fee. We will es-timate the pot at $1,450 this weekend ! For $2.00, you can’t top that!

The 3-6-9 was NOT hit ei-ther as Donald Pulliam missed on the first shot. So we go for $600 at West Covina Lanes this week in our Big Labor Event there!

The ALL NEW Ladies pot went to Esther Tambio who had a 271 handicap game good for $50. We will pay more places this week in West Covina. Good deal for $2.00.

ABTA League CanceledThe Thursday evening ABTA League scheduled for Valley View

Lanes is canceled due to non response of the League and lack of suf-ficient teams to create a great payfoff our bowlers.

We do thank the 9 teams, and others who committed and will hope to have a League again to be hosted at Valley View or past Center CAL Bowl.

We need at least 16 teams to create a great Payoff which added Mon-ey was included. We wanted to have a $7,000-8000 first place which is unattainable due the fact that all teams get a fair return in the way we operate the league.

Again thank you to all and No thanks for the people who wouldn’t even give a response. One way or the other who have bowled in the past making it even harder to organize. It is hard to organize in this fash-ion. Again thanks to the Teams and Individuals who tried and committed Good Luck to YOU.

Citrus Belt High Trio Game Revisited by Frank Weiler

HEMET — Recently I wrote that three bowlers at Cal Oaks Bowl set a Citrus Belt record for a game by three bowlers (trio) at 819. Then my friend JOEL RICKETTS, proprietor of PINS and NEEDLES PRO SHOP in Hemet Lanes, notified me that a trio at Hemet Bowl rolled a 822 game in 2005.

To be exact, it was April 2005 in the Monday Night Scratch League that George Billioux (300 game), Dave Sandoval (300 game), and Bret Irish (222 game) bowled 822. Thanks Joel for setting the record straight.

There were twenty-nine men who averaged 230 or better for sixty games or more this past season. While that number is nor-mal for recent years, this years average leader was the first Citrus Belt bowler to average 250 or better for 21 games or more.

While BOBBY CAMPAGNALE’S 250 average for 28 games did not qualify for our season’s high because the minimum 60 games weren’t bowled, breaking the 250 average barrier rates as one of the top accomplishments of the Citrus Belt season. Cam-pagnale did post 60 game averages of 243 (78 games) and 240 (93 games) and is the first of our bowlers to ever post two official averages of 240 or better in one season. My hat is off to my friend Mr. Campagnale.

The national average record, for 60 games or more bowled, is 261.

Citrus Belt president MIKE RADDEMAN wishes to con-gratulate our “TOP TEN” bowlers and looks forward to seeing them competing in this seasons annual Citrus Belt Men’s Only Tournament in November (14th - 22nd.) and our annual Citrus Belt Open Tournament in April 9-18, 2010. Both tournaments will be at ABC Moreno Valley Bowl. Watch for the Citrus Belt “TOP TEN” Lady Bowlers in a future article.

From the desk of

Linda JohnsonCOVINA—The Greater

Southern California Bowling Council met on Saturday, Au-gust 15th at the Orange Coun-ty USBC Association office. This council was formed as a support group for the local associations since USBC dis-continued the Field Represen-tatives.

At our meeting the Second Annual Singles Tournament application was finalized and will be held on Sunday, Sep-tember 20 at the Bowl –O-Drome Lanes in Torrance. Entry forms can be found at your local association office or local bowling centers in the Southern California area.

During the council meet-ing the new USBC awards structure was discussed. They have decided to give magnets instead of emblems, which for women bowlers is okay. However the male bowlers think it is a joke. The awards are for GAMES and SERIES ONLY!!! No More All Spare, Triplicate, Dutch 200, Over Game or Series Awards. However, would you believe, you can purchase them if you would like.

The Bowling Council ap-proved to create a Petition against the changes that have been made. We are asking all members of the USBC to sign the petition in hopes they might hear our cry and pos-sibly come up with a new di-rection which would be better received by the bowlers.

Dressel Mellows

by Mary Lynly

We all know him as the journalist extraordinaire at Bowlers Journal but who is Jim Dressel? In the current August 2009 BJ there was an old picture of him with a group of men and I wondered who the guy with all the hair was.

Journalist Jim Dressel has been pounding the lanes for bowling for 34-plus years and is known for asking the hardball questions in inter-views. He is turned on by cleverly ferreting out information that no one else could, and when he sees an angle, he’s like an Alaskan Eagle spot-ting salmon. His interviews and other articles are always revealing and thought-provoking and he says when he spots something that needs to be brought to the bowling public’s attention he considers it his job to do so.

He was born July 29, 1940 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, the second child of John and Ada Dressel. This means he’s a Leo in Zodiac terms. Leo, regal lion who is self expressive, self confident, dramatic, dominant and a leader. It also says Leos need to learn a sense of humility and warmth. He attended local schools and said he was somewhat of a whiz in chemistry in high school and thought he would pursue that in college but realized the advanced courses were not for him so he changed his major to Math with a minor in English when he attended Lebanon Val-ley College. Can you picture Jim behind a saxophone? He played in a regular band and dance band in high school.

He did a stint in the Military and was an actuarial assistant. He got into the Insurance business when he was discharged, and having become involved in bowling also found himself writing some stories covering bowling events. “There’s not much to do in winter in the Midwest or East, so I thought bowling sounded good,” he quipped. Jim rose to a 194 bowling average and was no slouch at golf either with a five handicap before back problems did him in. I asked about surgery and he said, “It only hurts when I Golf or Bowl.”

Norm Edelman, Editor of Kegler Publications liked what Jim was writing and asked him to go to work for Kegler. While with the Kegler, Jim took on the task of a poll of veteran bowlers to determine the best women bowlers of all time. Editor of Bowlers Journal Mort Luby was taking notice of Jim’s work, liked what he saw and talked to Jim about coming on board with BJ. Jim considered Bowlers Journal the premier publication on bowling and was receptive to the offer. It took a year but in 1975 Jim Dressel began his career with the BJ. Some said he wouldn’t last beyond two years but one thing they didn’t know was that Jim Dres-sel does not like to fail. His passion for Bowlers Journal and his work elevated him to Editor in 1994 and he is in his 34th year with the publica-tion now serving as executive editor. He also wrote a syndicated column for 10 years but decided he needed a change and gave up the bowling column when he switched to baseball (for Tuff Stuff magazine).

So, how did Dressel become the journalist he is? He already had an affinity for writing and had minored in English in college. He liked to read and went in search of material that could help him be a premier writer. He said when he found an author that didn’t put him to sleep — Rudolf Flesch — and read everything he wrote. He anointed Flesch as his writing guru and his passion for the written word developed.

He says somewhere along the line it appeared that interviews were his forte and he enjoys challenging journalistic principles. He also says he probably ticked some people off over the years but always tried to “call a spade a shovel” and get the point across. He has interviewed every industry leader over the years at least once.

He keeps in close touch with his daughter Lindsay, a fifth grade teacher, and he says with a father’s pride, “She’s beautiful.” Lindsay is recently engaged and I wonder if her fiancé has had his interview yet?

I liked his interview in BJ with Jason Thomas and said I thought he liked this fellow a lot. He said he likes guys that are “off the wall.” The interview he did with “Bowling Guru” Bill Taylor was 12 pages in the BJ - appropriate for a fellow like Taylor. He reflects on one group interview he did with Dick Weber, Don Johnson, Earl Anthony and Mark Roth, his idea being to show each of these bowlers at a different stage of their careers, and the difficulty in trying to get four A-type bowlers to settle down for an interview. Jim said he was probably the only one who had the nerve to ask the very powerful Alberta Crowe when she planned to step down after 21 years as WIBC President. Did he actually influence her? Who knows, but she did step down. Jim was the one of the few bowling journalists who managed to get into former PBA President Steve Miller’s world. Miller was known for not letting anyone in. He is most proud of having brought industry leaders and competitors Fred Florjancic of Brunswick and AMF President Phil Knisely together. No small feat to get two busy industry moguls to take the time for an interview but I am sure being interviewed by Dressel meant he would tell it like it was.

Jim Dressel has not been uninvolved. He was president of the Bowl-ing Writers Association of America in 1994 and said he was the one and only president who secured a presidential citation for the Hall of Fame inductees – at that time, it was Anne Marie Duggan and Mark Roth. This takes work. He is currently a mainstay on Bowl.com’s Phantom Radio and the Phantom says, “no one knows more about bowling that Jim Dres-sel.” He assists Phantom Radio with a quarterly review of what’s hap-pening at all levels of the sport.

He has been much honored for his work with over 40 writer awards. He says he writes for his own enjoyment. Any writer knows how dif-ficult it is to get a column out when you are not necessarily motivated so enjoying what you do helps. Dressel is also the recipient of the BPAA Wapinsky award; Mort Luby Sr. Memorial award (which is the BWAA’s Hall of Fame honor) and most recently in 2004 the John Davis Award.

Like a lot of us, he believes bowling is in trouble and needs a messiah to help it out of the morass. He believes that revitalizing team bowling is the answer to reviving bowling. When bowling was most prolific in the glory years, team bowling was where it was with leagues for every level of bowler and each center had a classic league to aspire to. The classic leagues were always a draw with neatly uniformed teams, good bowling and much competitive enthusiasm. He noted when Pro Bowling came on the scene many of the top bowlers in leagues pursued national and regional tours and it gutted a lot of the house classic leagues. We agreed that the connection that the local associations provided to membership has been squandered. He believes we take too many things for granted in this industry – perception is not fact. The adhesive that kept things together is missing.

We agreed that BPAA Executive Director John Berglund, a unique personality, had accomplished bringing unity to the industry and that new BPAA president Jim Sturm seems to have a good understanding of what needs to be done to grow the sport. Dressel believes bowling must change to get better. How to accomplish this is the $64 question?

It is time for the Power Poll again and I asked if he thought the top power people had actually had any significant affect on motivating the membership. We agreed that the circle of people affected by the group as a whole was pretty much tunnel focused on a few - youth bowling, col-legiate bowling, the elite bowler and the pros. Dressel moved from 18th to 13th in the last poll – so, people do think he makes a difference. He thinks the poll depends on one’s position in the Industry.

Although he admits to being the predator when covering stories in earlier years, he says he believes he has mellowed. He’s still opinionated because that’s what people who make a difference are but under that omi-nous façade and enviable shock of hair is a good sense of humor and a kind heart. He chaired the Flowers for the Living award for 16 years and he is a Founding Member and regular supporter of the Bowling Founda-tion. He is a sports nut, likes good movies, folk music, walking, reading, a good steak and Italian food and – he loves to write. Oh, and you can throw in a good cigar now and then.

I asked if he had ever considered writing a book and he said his one regret is when Andy Veripapa, who liked Jim’s style, asked him to write his book. Jim was busy and couldn’t take it on. In retrospect he said he should have done it.

When Jim agreed to this interview he said he would probably regret it and most of all he didn’t want me to make him out to be something he isn’t. I hope I made him out to be something he is.

He currently resides in Palatine, Illinois – “a hotbed of bowling” he says listing Tom Kouros and Les and Lyle Zikes as residents. A Dressel fan and regular reader of his articles – I have come to the conclusion that Jim Dressel is the voice of reason. He makes people think.

A Thank you letter from the Heart - from Mark and Denise Roth

Dear Bowling Family,First, an update: Mark is home, and working hard at rehab. He is holding his own, and on a good day can

walk approximately 300 feet at a time. (with the assistance of a tripod walking device) He uses an ankle brace for his left ankle to hold his foot in place as he walks. (He still has little or no use of his left ankle- without the brace it is difficult to walk) Nothing more with his left arm/hand as yet...small movements at best; but every little movement - is a wonderful thing! It truly is the small things in life that count the most.

Time has passed by so quickly. It is almost Fall; just the other day (Mary 31st) it seemed we were waiting for Summer. Mark was still enjoying and talking about the ceremony in which he was inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame in Reno - the first part of May. We were all packed for the Vegas tournament - which we ultimately didn’t make. It’s a strange feeling to be seeing fall items in the stores because we can’t really remember summer this year... It’s a vague memory.

Every day & night the past few months were spent in the hospital or rehab with Mark - and for the life of me- thinking back - when I did go home during that time, I couldn’t tell you what the weather was like on any given day. Summer 2009 has gotten away from us, but we look towards the up coming seasons with much hope of brighter tomorrows.

At certain times during this past few months we would wonder, ‘is this just a bad dream? or is this real?’ - then leaving that thought behind - because it was too mind-boggling to try and come to the harsh reality of what this would actually mean long term. We had enough to do with just getting through each day. We were going through the motions, but putting the emotions aside until we were in a better place to be able to face them. We had to do what we had to do at the time.

Mark was so physically weak, but trying so very hard to move his left side (with everything he had) for even the slightest of movements; being wheeled in and out for yet and still another test, and trying to find something he could eat as the stroke affected his swallowing. He could only eat mechanical soft foods for the first month. No fries! No burgers!... just thickened liquids. Everyone who knows Mark knows how much he loves his fries - and how difficult the “no fries” period had to have been for him . . . (lol).

Needless to say he lost 15 lbs. very quickly! (but has managed to regain a few pounds to date) As for me - I was tired - very hurt- and sad to see Mark in such a bad place, I had many conversations with God . . . still do. I stayed in“ shock mode,” and did what I could to support Mark and make him comfortable.

However, a couple of weeks ago, the shock of it all wore off, and reality hit! Mark was released from inpa-tient rehab and came home. Reality hit us square in the face... this is real! We were scared -what now? - Can we do this? Life as we knew it had forever changed; things will never be the same.

A few days into being home- the flood gates opened up - even to hear the guys were back out on the summer tour - and just knowing that Mark may never ever be able to be out there bowling again - was a very painful reality. It seemed unbearable. But moving forward - Mark continues with such determination, and moves through his difficult days like the Champ that he is. At 58, Mark is too young not to have a chance at continued rehab, and to try to make as much of a recovery as he possibly can. He is committed, and is amazingly determined as only Mark Roth would be. He’ll need rehab for the rest of his life - Rehab he wouldn’t be able to continue if it weren’t for all of your help. Thank you for all of the tournaments that have already taken place, and for all of the up- coming tournaments. Thanks for coming together to help give Mark a fighting chance.

Although we have many, many, many more miles in our journey, we are very thankful for the progress Mark has made. We are so very thankful for our friends, the entire Bowling community, (Mark’s extended family for 40 years) family, and fans . . . without them we wouldn’t have the strength and help we need to carry on. The song “Carry on” by Kansas - Mark’s song to help him get pumped up before bowling when he was out on Tour; the same song that was played for him at the USBC Hall of Fame Induction this past May. And every time his cell phone rings - it’s sings out -”Carry on my way ward son -there will be peace when you are done.” His song has taken on new meaning today.”

We have So many thank you’s to go out. . .we’ve sent many. . .but have so many people yet to thank. Some people we don’t even know how to reach. And, how do you say thank you when thank you just doesn’t seem like enough? We’d like to thank some CLOSE and very SPECIAL FRIENDS - Lifelong friends Johnny Petraglia, Parker Bohn, Judy Soutar, Kurt Harz, Bobby Rogers, Chris Monroy, Ray Shackelford, Jerry Francomano, Mark Wagoner, (Goober), Marshall Holman, Danny Wiseman, Hal Farber, Don Corcoine, Neil and Nicole Feincold, Dave Juric, Rose Johnson, Joan Gurney. . . I don’t think you guys realize what great strength you’ve given to Mark and I through your prayers, calls, cards, flowers, raffles, tournaments, donations, “words of encouragement” and “just checking in with us every few days - just to let us know you are out there - and you care”. You kept us going through the darkest of hours- and for that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You held us up - and you probably don’t even realize just how much your help has impacted our lives. You guys are all Angels.

Many, many thanks to a friend -Kurt Harz -from Brunswick for the donation of the Mark Roth image bowling balls to be raffled off at the various tournaments. Your generosity is over whelming..

Stan Kodish, take a bow - and a Standing O to you our friend! Thank you, a million times - thank you . . . thank you . .thank you. There will be a place for you in heaven.

A huge and heart felt thank you to Troy Greisen and everyone at The Bowling Foundation; All of our good friends at the PBA, USBC . . . Mark Sabintine- PBA Lane Man, Mike Tryniski at Lake View Lanes, Bob Johnson and Jim Dressel and everyone at Bowler’s Journal, Bowling Writers, Friends - Jim and CJ Goodwin at Stars and Strikes, Senior Bowlers and Stops -Thanks to the Centers for helping Johnny P. with Mark Roth Ball raffles. Thank you to all of regular tour guys, Nick Melnikoff -Bowler’s Paradise thank you. Thank you for all the Newspaper Articles, Press Releases, etc. Thank you to all of the centers that have run or will be running tournaments.

A big thank you to all of the Doctors at St Joseph’s and University Hospital, Syracuse, NY, all of the rehab facilities, especially St. Luke’s Heath Services in Oswego, NY. You guys are wonderful! Thanks for going the extra mile! Many thanks to Dan Markind for all of your kind help.

And Thank you to all of the Fans and for the fan mail! You are the greatest! The outpouring to Mark from people all over the world has been amazingly touching. People felt a great

loss in hearing the news of Mark’s paralysis. Most of the fans have let Mark know that he has been a Hero and inspiration in their lives for many year s- and he always will be. Devastation is the word used by fans most often as they wrote. The news truly shook many people. I told Mark ,”I feel for your fans”. . . they are in pain...they are really feeling it.

A very special thank you to Kirk Von Krueger and Fred Schreyer of the PBA along with all of our friends at the PBA, for all of the prayers, well wishes, cards, flowers . . .it mean so much. Thank you for naming the up coming PBA Plastic Ball Tournament in March the Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship. It is truly an honor- Mark is really proud, and happy he’s here to enjoy it.

Thank you to our family... thanks for being there. We love you. If there is anyone we’ve failed to mention . . . Please know we thank you. You are ALL truly amazing people! We Love You All,Mark and Denise Roth

Steve Smith Dazzles in Oak Tree Lanes 6 Gamer

by Ryan Richardson

DIAMOND BAR—On Sunday August 23rd at Oak Tree Lanes we concluded our last leg of our summer tourna-ment series. We had 23 entries paying out $1,100.00 in prize money plus $420.00 in side pots and blocks.

Steve Smith started hot and really never looked back shoot-ing a 804 series (270-279-255) winning the first block and second game side-pot. Steve continued his hot bowling win-ning the 2nd block, shooting (289-194-279) for a 762 and a clean sweep of both blocks, also securing another tourna-ment win.

Congratulations Steve on a great summer. Brittany Page came in and impressed everybody shooting (266-226-258-267-259-233). Brittany se-cured second and pushed Steve to finish strong. Brittany also won the 3rd game side-pot.

Rob Young was strong all day, finishing in third place shooting (278-212-256-244-206-227). The last spot to cash came down to the 10th frame of game 6. Last months win-ner Jason B put together a nice final block (279-222-247) and watched Vern Adams slam a 9 pin in the tenth to give Jason B a two pin edge over Vern for the final cash spot.

Other side-pot winners were Bob Drake’s 279 in game one and Tim T.’s 255 in game five. I would like to thank everyone for coming out and bowling in our 6 gamer on behalf of Oak Tree Lanes management.

The turnout was great and I look forward to seeing every-one back in October. Check the Bowling News for date and time.

ABT Celebrates 32nd Anniversary at Cal Bowl

LAKEWOOD—The Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT), the largest and best tournament club in the United States, is set to celebrate its 32nd year with its annual Labor Day Anniversary tournament this weekend at Cal Bowl. The club was originally designed for bowlers who averaged 189 and under. The club’s purpose was to give those bowlers the opportunity to compete with those of similar abilities on a handicapped basis for a minimum guaranteed prize fund and to receive the accolades normally reserved for higher average bowlers. In March 1995 the ABT introduced a Master’s Division open to bowlers averaging between 190 and 220. Four years later, in July 1999, the maximum average was changed to 225. ABT averages and handicaps are based on the highest verifi-able average in the past three years based on 80% of the difference in your average and 225.

Although the ABT is not a professional organization, it is a private membership bowling tournament organization governed by Rules, Regulations, Policies, and Grooming Standards and consists of the Classic and Masters Division.

The ABT was patterned after the Professional Bowlers Associa-tion with some modifications for amateur bowlers. Qualifying for the ABT is three games instead of the 18 games used by the PBA. There are other differences in our semi-finals and finals format as well, but the general idea is to provide a similar environment to that used on the PBA tour.

During the first 32 years, the ABT has expanded to 21 branches in 11 states with more than 165,000 members and has paid out in excess of $200 million in more than 20,000 tournaments. The ABT Branch in Orange County conducts a minimum of 40 events per year. A schedule of upcoming tournaments can be found in the ABT racks at most bowling centers in Orange and Southern L.A. County bowling centers, as well this paper, and on the ABT web site www.org.abtbowling.com

The ABT conducts a minimum of one National Tournament each year, and in the past few years has increased the National Tournaments to two per year. The just concluded Summer National at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas paid out just under $500,000.

Orange County Branch of the ABT invites you come and join in our anniversary tournament this weekend at Cal Bowl. General Manager Leonard Ruiz has guaranteed that the shot will be very fair for all bowlers.

The tournament kicks off on Friday night, with a squad scheduled for 7PM. This squad features side pots guaranteed at a minimum of $125 per game, as well as one in every four bowlers in each division advancing to the semi-finals on Monday afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday, our first squad begins at 1PM with squads every 90 minutes with the last squad beginning at 5:30PM. On Sunday evening at 7:30PM, we will hold our semi-finals and finals for the Tournament of Champions. To be eligible for this special side tournament, you must have been an ABT champion in any division in the past 32 years. We will then be back at 11:00 for our last qualifying squad of the tournament.

We will also be running a SCRATCH beat the board event using the same squad times on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and the final squad on Monday at 11:00am. You do not have to be a member of the ABT to bowl the scratch portion of this event. No past PBA champions will be allowed to compete in the scratch portion of this event. We will also have a SENIOR beat the board event for all bowlers 50 and older.

We will be selling raffle tickets and offering prizes daily. Prizes include future tournament entries, Storm Ball, & Storm Bags.

Professional Approach Bowling Supply located inside Cal Bowl will be offering the Storm Virtual Gravity for the amazing prize of $185 including grips subject to stock on hand. We hope to see you this weekend at Cal Bowl.

Yes! Phone Cards Make a Difference

by Mary Lynly

The California Bowling Writers are starting their 6th year of plugging their Phone Cards for the Troops char-ity. We’re off to a great start with numerous donations in memory of loved ones. What better way to honor them and provide something that links families to loved ones in the armed services and away from home?

If your mail box is like mine – there are tons of orga-nizations that want donations. I hope you keep yours close to home. A phone card means a lot to that fellow or gal in the war zone fighting to keep our nation free.

We were blessed with the remainder of a 1,000 minute phone card from the Bowling Writer’s Association of Amer-ica board of directors. There is 790 minutes remaining and we hope to trade them for smaller cards.

Letters from families told us that the little phone card was among their most prized possessions and offered a taste of home when they were in 110 degree heat and having sand for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We are so lucky to live in America and this phone card effort means a lot to CBW. Donations since inception total $23,610.40. Help us exceed last year’s donations and get those cards off for Valentine’s Day in 2010.

Donations may be sent to: Tina Martin, Treasurer, Cali-fornia Bowling Writers, 57 Shields Avenue, Novato, CA 94947-3877.

The Stars Shine Bright Deep in the Heart of Reno

by Jackie Wyckoff

RENO—The 43rd Annual Nor Cal Bowling Centers Youth Bowling Association All Star Banquet was held at the Reno Events Ballroom on Saturday, August 22, 2009. The event celebrated the achievements of one hundred of Northern California’s brightest and most talented youth bowlers with over five hundred of their family, friends, teammates and coaches in attendance to honor them. Willie King, NCBC President, presided over the evening’s events and Mike Hillman was an excellent Master of Ceremonies.

The evening started with eleven-year-old All Star Shelby Throntveit of Harvest Park Bowl singing the National Anthem. Shelby was obviously quite nervous but she has a lovely voice and a talent for singing. Not many of us would attempt to sing that song. We were then touched by a lovely photo tribute to California Bowlers serving our country in the U.S. armed forces, set to the music of Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” produced by Stacy Aldred who also created the photo montage for the All Stars.

First on the agenda was the presentation of the youth scholarships. Lauren Orgeron received two scholarships for a total of $700; Christopher Davidson, Brian Lim, Robert Villasenor and Jennifer Yates received $500 each; Michael Fujita, Jr. received $400; Jesse Anzelc, Josh Ciochon and Ashley Jones received $250 each; Samantha Chong and Robert Tuck were awarded $100 each. Including tournament and honor awards NCBC awarded $45,985 in youth scholarship money for the 2008-09 season.

Ric Hamlin of Steve Cook’s Bowling Supply was presented the Pete Lusich Memorial Award. This award is presented annually to the person whose dedication and contributions maintain the highest standards of Youth Bowling in Northern California.

A highlight of the evening was the inaugural NCBC YBA Hall of Fame inductions. The freshman class roster was a veritable who’s-who of Nor Cal bowling. Don Hillman, Pete Lusich and Lois Shumake were inducted in the Leadership category and Leanne Barrette-Hulsenberg, Kim Terrell-Kearney, and Tish Johnson in the Performance category. The families of Lusich and Shumake accepted posthumously in their honor. Kim and Leanne stayed on stage after they were inducted, to help present the All Stars with their awards. Certainly this was a thrill for our young bowlers. Tish Johnson was unable to attend.

Honoring the All Stars was the next item on the agenda. This was the “main event” and the reason why most of the five hundred plus attendees were there. We were not disappointed. A photo montage of the All Stars was presented on the big screens.

Anyone who thinks that kids today are on the wrong path needs to attend a NCBC YBA All Star Banquet. The youngest honorees were just six years old and the oldest, twenty-two. Each of these youth bowlers stepped up on stage and accepted a plaque and medal with honor and (mostly) humility. Some of the older bowlers were “roasted” by Mike Hillman but it was all in good fun and there was a lot of mutual respect and admiration going around that huge banquet room.

It was definitely a bittersweet moment for those senior youth bowlers who were being “aged out” of the USBC programs, due to a recent rule change. It is unfortunate that our governing body could not find a way to grandfather those affected into the age change ruling, rather than just cutting them loose with little advance warn-ing. These bowlers are mostly college students who were counting on another year of scholarship eligibility to make it through these tough economic times. NCBC YBA has allowed them one more year of eligibility – even as adult bowlers. Nonetheless, several accepted their last-ever youth scholarships at this event.

The event catering was done by the Eldorado Hotel and Casino and there is none better in all of Reno to feed a large group for a special event. I was delighted to have been treated to “Mama Carano’s” incredible mushroom ravioli signature dish along with the tasty tri tip, the yum-o chicken and all of the many side dishes. Oh, and don’t get me started on the dessert table! No one else could have fed that many, in such style, in that short period of time.

This year the kids had a few added bonuses. On Friday evening a hospitality welcome reception was held and approximately sixty of the one hundred All Stars attended with their families. A huge spread was provided by NCBA Youth Committee chairman, Dennis Ganduglia of Double Decker Lanes.

On Saturday afternoon the National Bowling Stadium hosted an adult-youth bowling tournament. This was the first time the All Star Committee included ancillary events surrounding the banquet and the response was overwhelming. A second squad was added for the tournament on Saturday morning, filling both squads to capacity. Bob Thomas, Operations Manager of the National Bowling Stadium told us “It was such a great joy to see all of the support for the NCBC Youth All Stars here in Reno. It shows just how important it is for families and friends to come together and share in the experience of youth bowling. The National Bowling Stadium is proud that we were able to be a part of it.”

Steve Cook’s Bowling Supply, Storm, Brunswick and Dexter Shoes sponsored a youth bowlers’ clinic on Saturday morning. Lee Upp, Western Region Sales Manager for Storm Bowling said “The clinic was great and well-received by both the youth bowlers and their parents. There is a wealth of talent out there in Northern California. Our coaching staff was impressed by many of the bowlers who came through the clinic and we hope to be associated with the event next year.” Upp noted that the clinicians were a bit overwhelmed in the beginning due to the sheer number of kids who wanted to participate, but once they scheduled a second session on Sunday things settled down. He estimates they had 70-80 youth bowlers attend the clinic over the weekend.

NCBC President Willie King credited Mike Hillman of Cloverleaf Family Bowl for his vision and dedication in bringing all the components of the weekend to fruition. “Without Mike, none of this would be happening,” he stated.

The bowlers received All Star status in one of ten categories: Bantam Girls & Boys aged 9 and under; Prep Girls & Boys, 10-12 years old; Junior Girls & Boys, 13-15 years old; Major Girls & Boys,16-18 years old; and Major Girls & Boys 18-21 years old.

My youngest sister Judy passed away last week. A seperate article written by her son is to the right..She was a great bowler and coach.

Julia “Judy” Campise (1931-2009)by Dominic Campisi

My Mom loved bowling. She was a true bowler in her heart and in her soul. Most real bowlers keep bowling for as long as they can because of their love for the game. Real bowlers that love the game will read everything they can about bowling, go to schools to take lessons, and watch the pros over and over again on tape to make their game better. My Mom was that way. My Mom knew she had thrown her last ball and I could see how sad it made her inside, but she never said a thing. She never won a major tournament or bowled a 300 game, but she was one of those people who knew the game so well and the fundamentals of it. She could watch you throw the ball once and tell you ev-erything you were doing wrong and why you were having prob-lems. She reached the height of a 190 average in the days when the bowling balls were hard rubber and they had the Wednesday night Women’s Traveling League. Mom had her greatest friend-ships with the other people she bowled with. These friendships have lasted and never ended throughout the years.

When I was young my Mom would coach the kids on Sat-urday in the junior leagues, something she did voluntarily and always found away to teach the kids she coached the four step approach. Watching the kids going on the approach and throw-ing the ball, she had a way to make them understand and execute the fundamentals of the game.

I watched the last few years has her fluid approach started to decline because of the soreness in her hips and shoulders, but she never gave up and continued to bowl. She was one of those bowlers who never showed emotion when she bowled, or when she walked back to sit down after a frame. It was the same if she had got a strike or missed the ten pin. She had those haunting bowler stories that all lifetime bowlers have, like the solid eight pin that cost her the 300 game or losing that big tournament with a ringing ten in the tenth frame. She would just shrug her shoul-ders and say that’s bowling. Whenever I was down about my own game she would bring up those stories or situations that had happened to other bowlers and tell me it happens to everybody and there will be a next time. When her Brother Connie was voted into the Bowling Hall of Fame for his bowling writing she was so excited and proud of him it meant almost as much to her as it did to him.

The last time my Mom was in a bowling alley she was on her way to practice like she did every Sunday when she fell down the steps and hurt her back. Little did we know that it really wasn’t her back but something more serious. She was such a good coach even while she lay in bed and I explained to her what I was doing she could tell me what I was probably doing wrong and sure enough she was always right. The last few years I watched my Mom’s average slip way downward. Most of her friends she bowled with all those years, no longer bowled anymore because they could not accept the decline in their skills or for physical reasons. I watched her face as she bowled and could see how hard it was for her to accept missing that spare. No one else could see it unless you really knew her. I could see when her hip would not let her slide or when her arm hurt so badly because the shoulder was torn but she kept on trying for the love she had for the game and never stopped until that time she fell. She was always happy when Sam my brother or I bowled really well and in a way I always felt she took some credit for it. So God, if there is bowling in heaven please let her have that 300 game, because nobody deserved it more then my Mom, Judy Campise. Dominic Campisi 8/28/09
