The Adult Education Department has

partnered with Sussex Coast College to

expand the range of learning

opportunities available to you.

Whether you are hoping to learn

something new or to develop existing

skills, there is something for everyone

whatever your age, aptitude or ability.

You can test the water with a one day

workshop, a short course or you can

take the plunge and sign up for a full

year’s course.

Learning can help in many aspects of

life: from getting a job and improving

your career prospects to doing

something you enjoy and meeting new

Credit Crunched? You may not need to

pay the whole fee in one go. Most course

fees over £100 can be paid in 2 or 3

instalments, ask at the community office

for details. We have a small fund in case

of hardship. All cases will be dealt with on

an individual basis.

If you are unhappy with the service that we provide, please let us know as soon as possible in order for us to make improvements. BACH FLOWER REMEDIES Carrie Yuen (17300) Spring into a journey of simple healing with Dr Edward Bach. Dr Bach’s philosophy is one of simplicity and this was reflected in his final completed work – the 38 flower remedies which gently ease distress and combat ill health by enabling harmony and peace to flood our lives. The aim of this course is to learn straightforward descriptions of the remedies and other practical information to be able to use the remedies in everyday situations. Traditionally herbs have been used in Spring to cleanse the body after Winter. You will learn how to identify and use Spring herbs as tonics and for general health. ☼ HAND REFLEXOLOGY Carrie Yuen (17302) The hands and feet are a map of the body, they plot areas of malfunctioning organs and muscles and the body’s structural framework. Organs and muscles are joined by a network of nerves to tiny points on the hands and feet where energy terminates. Come and learn how to carry out this ancient therapy safely and effectively to help yourself, family and friends. Although foot reflexology is the more commonly known method of treatment, hand reflexology has been found to achieve the same results and of course, the hands are more accessible than the feet. In just one day you will gain a better understanding of the principles of infusing plant material in oil and produce your own massage lotions for various ailments. have been accepted, developed and in

use for thousands of years in many other

cultures. It has existed for many

centuries in Chinese, Indian and some

Middle Eastern and Greek civilisations.

They include different approaches and

techniques for treating the whole person.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING Lucy Thomas (17312) An introduction to Chinese brush painting is a relaxing, exciting way to unleash creativity and learn new techniques. You will be able to use a brush in free flowing movements, not needing to worry about making mistakes as each stroke is spontaneous and free. You will learn some basic principles and be shown how to paint Chinese characters (words) in an easy to follow method. You will produce artwork to be proud of! This course is open to all abilities. Come along and enjoy some creative cultural fun. Monday 22/09/2014 7-9pm Fee £48 5 weeks DRAWING AND WATERCOLOUR PAINTING Val Mays (17313) Learn the tricks and techniques for successful drawing and painting in watercolour. Gain confidence using your pencils, brushes and watercolours in a friendly, relaxed class. This course aims to explain and demonstrate the basic steps: line and tonal drawing, colour mixing, watercolour techniques and developing your own style. This course is complete in itself or may be followed as a basis for progression to a more advanced course or to join an art group. EXPLORE YOUR SEWING MACHINE AND SEWING SKILLS : BEGINNERS Karen Wintle (17318) This course aims to nurture and develop confidence and ability with a range of basic machine skills and techniques. You will explore both basic sewing machines and how to use an overlocker. All students will complete a basic skills folder to take away for future reference and produce at least three simple practical garments. Wednesday 24/09/2014 7-9pm Fee £80 10 weeks EXPLORE YOUR SEWING MACHINE AND SEWING SKILLS: INTERMEDIATE Karen Wintle (17319) Following on from the beginners’ course, you will develop more advanced knowledge and skills. Complex techniques will be explored and applied to garments and other textile projects of moderate difficulty. EXPLORE YOUR SEWING MACHINE AND SEWING SKILLS: FURTHER ADVANCED Karen Wintle (17321) This course will move on from the advanced sewing course incorporating all the skills and techniques learned so far. The possibilities of 3D pattern cutting and draping will also be explored. It would be useful for students to have a mannequin for this purpose but this is not essential as some students may wish to continue to work with commercial patterns. Students will be encouraged to work with more challenging fabrics and develop garments with complex internal structures. Tuesday 23/09/2014 7-9pm Fee £80 10 weeks

☼ JEWELLERY UPCYCLING Julie Tucker-Williams (17322) Ever think about what to do with those bits of broken jewellery and treasured objects you can't bear to part with? This creative course will give your imagination a kick-start and introduce you to the basics of jewellery making. Don’t worry if you don’t have unwanted beads as there will be a chance to purchase on the day along with silks, wires, clasps and chains priced from £5. This class is for all abilities. JEWELLERY DESIGN AND MAKING Julie Tucker-Williams This course aims to teach and build confidence in the use of basic jewellery tools. You will learn sawing, soldering, cabochon stone setting and texturing. Apply your new-found skills in a creative, experimental and challenging way. Think tradition, design modern, make original! KNIT ONE, PURL ONE Jackie Post (17329) Knit your way to a new hobby and learn how to knit from scratch. You will be taught basic stitches, how to cast on and off and how to read a pattern. ☼ MAKE YOUR OWN SAMPLE BLIND

Sharon Hamby (17330) During this one day course you will make a sample blind, learning skills for a professional finish. You will be taught how to measure accurately, calculate materials, consider different design options and the benefits of alternative hanging methods. Some basic sewing skills would be helpful but not essential. You will need to bring your own sewing machine. Saturday 18/10/2014 9.30am-3.30pm Fee £35 1 day ☼ MAKE YOUR OWN SAMPLE CURTAIN Sharon Hamby (17331) During this one day course you will make a sample curtain. You will be taught how to line a curtain and finish with header tape, showing you all the tricks of the trade to produce professionally finished curtains. You will learn how to measure accurately, calculate fabric quantities and pattern match. Some basic sewing skills would be helpful, but not essential. You will need to bring your own sewing machine. WOOD SCULPTURE FOR BEGINNERS Martin Brockman (17338) Even if you have never held a chisel or can’t draw a design, this course will help you build your confidence and show you the correct technique to achieve the results you desire. Learn how to identify timber, planing and carving shapes, finally learning about surface finishes. SILVERSMITHING Owen Madhlope Phillips This course is suitable for students of all abilities. If you are new to silversmithing you will be shown how to shape the silver, solder, planish with a hammer, pierce using a small saw and finally polish to a mirror finish. Silver may be purchased from the tutor, cost dependent on weight. We’ll provide the pallets and the tutor, you provide the creativity and together you will produce a unique item for home or garden. Saturday 18/10/2014 9.30am-3.30pm Fee £38 1 day ☼ WILLOW WEAVING Martin Brockman Using seasonal woods, you will be instructed on how to create an ornamental structure to display in your garden, whether it has a practical use or is purely decorative. ☼ CHOCOLATE HEAVEN WORKSHOP Tina Wakeford (17348) This one day workshop will show you the skills to cover and decorate a chocolate cake with beautiful chocolate roses, curls, cloth and fans. This is no day to calorie count but just have fun and learn the art of creating a cake that will be admired by all, then demolished to the last crumb! Saturday 25/04/2015 9.30am-3.30pm Fee £35 1 day SUGAR CRAFT: CARNATIONS AND ROSES Tina Wakeford (17349) Create beautiful roses and carnations all made from sugar paste. You will learn how to handle the paste and be taught how to work colour into your flower, making it look almost as good as the real thing. By the end of the course you will have created handmade flowers ready to adorn any cake. All abilities welcome. From creating your own character to illustrating a book cover or poem. There are no boundaries in illustration. There will be something for every new illustrator on this course and it will be fun, dynamic and inspiring, bringing out your artistic abilities and giving inspiration! MANDARIN CHINESE FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS Xiaoyao Ma (17403) Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world with more than 1.3 billion Chinese people that can speak Mandarin. This course is specifically designed for those students who want to grasp the fundamentals of Mandarin Chinese as well as an understanding of Chinese culture. DRUMMING: YOU COULD BE IN CUBA Jamie Harris (17409) Spend ten weeks imagining you are in the favelas of Cuba learning how to play rumbas, Abajua, afoxe and more. Afro-Cuban rhythms form the basis for much of Cuba’s modern music such as salsa or Mozambique. They are traditionally performed without any other instruments other than drums and voices, also with dancers (tuition not included).
