RESPONSIBILITIESOF MEMBERSHIP
Candidatesshouldbe awareof the followingresponsibilitiesof membershipin the AACR.Activemembersmust pay annualdues,a majorportionof which is designatedfor a subscriptionto at leastoneof the AACR'spublications.Newlyelectedmembersof the AACRwho havealreadypurchasedsubscriptionstoCancerResearch,CellGrowth& Differentiation,or CancerEpidemiology,Biomarkers& Preventionat the higher,nonmemberrate will receivereimbursementof the unusedportionof thosesubscriptionsonce their first year's membershipdues are paidin full.
All correspondingmemberselectedafter May 23, 1985, arerequired to pay an annual assessment in lieu of dues. Thisassessment,which is equivalentto that portion of the regularduesthatpertainsto supportof activitiesotherthanpublications,is imposed to defray the cost of sending AACR publications to

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP
The AmericanAssociationfor CancerResearch(AACR)is ascientific society consisting of laboratory and clinical cancerresearchers. It was founded in I 907 “tobring together activeinvestigatorsof the cancerproblemfor presentationanddiscussion of new or significant observations; and to foster research incancerandotherphenomenaof growth.―Membersof theAACRenjoythe followingbenefits:
1. subscriptions to the journals Cancer Research, CellGrowth& Differentiation,and CancerEpidemiology,Biomarkers& Preventionat the reducedmemberrate;
2. the privilegeof sponsoringan abstractfor presentationatthe AACRannualmeeting;
3. an advance copy of the Program and Proceedings pertaining to eachannualmeeting;
4. a reduced registration rate at all scientific meetings;5. early notification of events in the AACR's series of special
conferences;6. subscriptions to any future AACR journals at reduced
memberrates;7. reduced rates for the AACR Employment Register;8. the benefit of AACR's public education activities;9. the receipt ofAACR newsletters, meeting announcements,
and an up-to-date membership directory.
QUALIFICATIONSFOR MEMBERSHIP
Activemembershipin the AACRis opento investigatorswholive in the Americas, and who have conducted two years ofmeritoriousresearchthat hasresultedin publicationsrelevanttocancer. If a candidate is working in a research area not directlyrelatedto the cancerfieldbut hasconductedresearchof exceptionalscientificmerit,heor shemayalsoqualifyfor membership.
Correspondingmembershipis opento qualifiedpersonswhoare not residentsof the Americas.The requirementsfor correspondingmembershipare the sameas those for active membership.VisitingscientistsfromoutsidetheAmericaswhointendto return to their countriesof originsoon after submittingtheirapplicationsshould apply for correspondingmembership.Allotherindividualsshouldapplyforactivemembershipandtransferto correspondingstatus at a laterdate if they shouldleavetheAmericas.
PROCEDURESFOR APPLICATION
Thereare three deadlinesfor receiptof a membershipapplication: March 1, July 1, and October 1 of each year. TheMembershipCommitteewill reviewall completeapplicationsforactive membership that have been received by these deadlinesandwillsubmitrecommendationsoneachcandidateto theBoardof Directorswhich formallyelectsall members.The sameprocedure is followed by the Special Memberships Committee whichreceives applications for corresponding membership. Persons wishing to apply for associate membership must usethe officialapplicationform on the reversesideof theseinstructions.Eachcandidatefor associatemembershipmust be nominated by an active member in good standing of the AACR. Threecompleted copies of the form should be submitted; at least oneof these copies must carry the original signatures of both thecandidate and the active member nominator. The applicationform may be submitted to the Association Office at any time.
After reviewof applicationsfor associatemembership,the ExecutiveDirectorwill notifycandidatesof theirelectionor deferralwithin one month of the receipt of the application form. A checkintheamountof $20,whichrepresentsoneyear'sduespayment,must accompanythe application.This fee will be refundedtoanycandidatedeemedto beineligiblefor associatemembership.Checksshouldbe in U.S.currency,madepayableto AACR,Inc.,anddrawnon a U.S.bank.Sendthe threecopiesof the application form and the $20 dues payment to:

Associatemembersmustpayannualduesin anamountto bedeterminedby theAACRBoardof Directors.Duesfor 1992havebeen set at $20 per year. If an application is submitted by August31, the accompanyingdues paymentwill be credited to thecurrentyear.CandidatessubmittingapplicationsbetweenSeptember1 andDecember31 mayindicatewhethertheywishtheirdues paymentscredited to the current or forthcomingyear.Candidatesshouldbeaware,however,that associatemembersmay sponsor an abstract for the annual meeting only if their duesfor thecurrentyeararepaid.Forexample,anassociatemembersubmittingan abstract in December1991 for the forthcomingannualmeetingmusthavepaidduesfor 1991.Anynewlyelectedassociate members of the AACR who have already purchasedsubscriptions to Cancer Research, Cell Growth & Differentiation,or CancerEpidemiology,Biomarkers& Preventionat the higher,nonmemberratewill receivea refundfor the unusedportionofthat subscriptionuponreceiptof their paymentfor a member'ssubscription.
EachFall the AACRwill sendto currentassociatemembersan invoicefor dues for the forthcomingyear. Paymentof thisinvoicemust be accompaniedby a statementsigned by theassociatemember'scurrentregistrar,dean,or departmenthead,verifyingthe member'scurrentacademicstatus. The Association's By-Laws state that dues are payablefor each year inadvanceonor beforeJanuary1of theyearto whichtheyshouldbe applied.An individualmay be an associatememberfor amaximumof five years.Eachyear in which an individualpaysdueswill countas onefull yearof associatemembership.Thus,an associate member who pays dues for 1991 may retainassociatemembershipuntil December31, 1995.
