COLUMBARIUM EXPANSION:Several months ago the Columbarium Committee began planning for our next expansion project as the current phase is projected to be full within the next two years. After reviewing multiple sites on the campus, the commit-

tee determined that the best location to expand the columbarium was the open space between the front of Clare Hall facing the main parking lot and the existing columbarium. The committee has been working with architects, arborists, a construction firm, and the City of Raleigh on a design plan for the expansion. The Parish Finance Committee and the Diocese of Raleigh have also been involved. We are now at a point where we are close to put-ting shovels in the ground. This phase of construction is expected to take 6-8 months to complete. As the site will require significant drainage mediation work, the trees in this area have been removed. Some of the trees were not well and at their end of life, some were in the direct path of where actual structures and under-ground piping will be, and others, if left, would have been very costly to remove later from the enclosed courtyard and would have caused damage to the new area. Someone recently asked how this project will be funded. The project will be self-funded by the Columbarium Endowment Fund. When we sell a niche, a portion of every sale goes into this endowment fund for perpetual care and future expansion. It is now sufficient to fund the expansion. Funds removed from the endowment for this project will be replenished by future sales of new niches. We look forward to providing further updates as we move forward.

Kathleen Owen, Director of Parish LifeParish Life Ministries

Over the last few years, there have been many headlines highlighting how divided we seem to have become. I remember being told as a child that if I didn’t have something nice to say, then I should say nothing. It’s a lesson I’m still working on, to be fair, but it speaks to the standard of civility our parents modeled and expected of us. So whenever I get an opportunity to share an uplifting story, I make sure to share it everywhere I can. One of those examples came to me earlier this week, and I hope you feel a sense of hope and wellbeing as I share it with you.

Back in July of 2019, Fr. Steve Kluge and I were called to visit someone at Rex Hospital. A lady named Rae had gotten an upsetting diagnosis of cancer and was facing some complex surgery. Fr. Steve anointed her, I gave her a prayer shawl from our Prayer Shawl ministry. She was touched that someone would have creat-ed something so pretty to give to some-one they didn’t know. We were about to leave when I felt compelled to share my own cancer story in hopes that it would give her something to hold on to over the coming days. We shared a bit more con-

versation and she said that some years ago, she was great at crochet and used to make sweaters, blankets, etc. She said that when she felt better, she would like to make a prayer shawl for the ministry to bring comfort to someone else. Over the coming months, her diagnosis was more and more challenging. Fr. Steve and I went to visit her all the way out in Clayton. She looked tired and her spirit seemed burdened, but not broken. We talked, we listened, we prayed. As we were leaving, she reminded me that she still had plans to dust off her crochet hook, get out a pattern and make that shawl. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure she would have the strength. A week ago, a friend of Rae’s called me and said that the shawl was ready and she wanted to bring it to me. We met and Rae gave me a beautiful cream-colored shawl that she had lovingly crocheted. She said that it was so important to her to pay forward what she received during the visit from Fr. Kluge and me, two strangers, but also the kindness of the person who made her shawl. Rae is still battling cancer. She has had many more surgeries, but she recently had a clean scan. She is grateful for this good news, and happy for the things she can still enjoy. She finds comfort in comforting others and she is sure God still has plans for her here on this earth. So whenever you can, be kind. Espe-cially to strangers. You have no idea the impact you could have. If you are in need of some kindness, or would like to share kindness with others, please contact me at [email protected] or 919-847-8205x241. If you’d like more information about our Prayer Shawl Ministry, please contact Cindy Cardello at 919-846-8825 or visit https://www.stfrancisraleigh.org/prayer-shawl-ministry/.

They’re here! Our students have ar-rived! What a special blessing it was to welcome our little people to preschool! The first week of the new school year is now complete- phew! I think both teachers and students were happily exhausted by Friday! All of the teacher’s extra effort, planning, preparation, and care that went into making sure this past week was the first of many successful and fun ones over the upcoming year, really showed. While there were certainly some tears shed by a few of our first time students, it didn’t take long before their enthusi-asm matched that of returning students. The teachers created an environment in which you could almost touch the excitement and energy created by being

able to come to school together. Prior to COVID, we might have taken for granted a little the gift of being able to come back together to see old friends, make new ones, and enjoy playful learning with each other. The threat of reperucs-sions from COVID are always there, but perhaps, the silver lining is that we appreciate all that we have in our preschool and school community a little more deeply. While COVID was never far from our thoughts, at least we could put it away for a few hours each day to thorougly appreciate the smiles, take in the laughter, and marvel at the magic created with all of the eager anticipation of the new school year.

Upon further reflection, I can truly say that I think that the teachers and I appreciated the retun of the students like never before. Their joyous presence, many giggles, and enthusiastic proclamations of “This was the best day ever!” filled our hearts even more this year! I know that I am giving an extra bit of thanks to God that are stu-dents are back with us. Please join me in a prayer of gratitude for all that they bring to us today and will bring tomorrow! We are truly blessed and grateful! Please also continue to pray for good health, happy learning, and a wonderful school year ahead for everyone! To learn more about becoming part of our incredible preschool family and the opportunities we provide, please visit our website at www.preschoolatstfrancis.com or contact Shelley Freeman at: [email protected].

Beginning Again...Without FearRev. James Sabak, O.F.M.

Every new school year is filled with excitement and trepidation. Excitement for the newness of it all, the chance to begin again, to explore and discover new things, to reconnect with and build new friendships and relationships. Trepidation because we cannot know fully what the year may hold, what challenges we may face, and what transformation we may willing or unwillingly have to undergo. Most school years begin this way, that is, until these past two school years. The Franciscan School opened the 2021-2022 school year this past Wednes-day with an oddly familiar feel. At the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year, we thought we might have left behind the social distancing, the masking, the small classroom cohorts, and the hybrid experience of education. Yet apart from continued masking for the time being, the year began with a palpable excite-ment and joy, which after eighteen plus months was not only remarkably uplifting, but it was also undoubtedly infectious. It was as if we had almost forgotten what it was like to be The Franciscan School. We wondrously welcomed back not only our student body, faculty, and staff, but also welcomed the return of the unique jubilance and revelry that makes

The Franciscan School a place where learning and growth are an equal match between mind and heart.Yes, there was also trepidation. Would this be a year of taking more steps back-ward? Is continued masking a harbinger of more restrictions and protocols? Would we relive all over again the last eighteen months of anxiety and confusion? But these questions did not have the same power and control over us as they had in the past. We knew what dark days were and are, and at The Franciscan School we are determined not to allow the darkness to have the upper hand. The joy of returning, of classrooms filled with our friends, of teachers and aides excited to share their wisdom opens the way for a different, more authentic, more sincere beginning to this school year. And what makes this possible? It is again remembering who we are as The Franciscan School. We are a community who finds its core and its identity in the revelation of Jesus Christ through the lens of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. Both faced many trepidations, especially when God asked them to leave behind all they knew to embark on unknown and uncharted paths of discovery. They did

so trusting that God could accomplish good through them, and because they went forth without fear. It is the fearless-ness of Francis and Clare that drives The Franciscan School ever forward; a fearlessness grounded in hope that God can make sense out of the challenges and struggles we face.Gathering once again in the courtyard of the elementary school, the entire study body opens each day with Morning Prayer. Crowded together around the great statue of Saint Francis and the wolf of Gubbio, we are reminded how God through the life of Saint Francis brought peace and understanding out of chaos. In this chaotic world in which we live, it is our responsibility at The Franciscan School to teach our students how to bring hope out of chaos, to discover and enact solutions that defeat our fears, and to know that standing by, with, and for one another God makes all things possible.More information about our parish school, The Franciscan School, can be found on our website at www.francis-canschool.org/ or contact Principal Mike Watson at [email protected].

Over the last half dozen years, our parish has helped resettle two refugee families into Wake County through our partnership with the local resettlement organization called the U.S. Committee for Refu-gees and Immigrants (USCRI).We now have the opportunity to help once again as USCRI begins to ramp up their resettlement efforts. Will you join our effort? We are looking for a core group of parishioners willing to lead this effort in the coming months that involve preparing an apartment with donated furniture for the family, welcoming them into the country, and providing ongoing support in the form of transportation, ESL tutoring, and mentorship. There will be orientation, training, and support of this journey from USCRI and St. Francis parish staff. You can check out our webpage, https://www.stfrancisraleigh.org/ref-ugee/, or contact Trevor Thompson, Director of the Office of Justice and Peace, [email protected] with any questions.------------------Related to this, many of us have been glued to the news coming out of Afghanistan this past week. After 20 years of war, unimaginable violence, and so many lives lost, it’s heartbreaking to see a worsen-ing humanitarian crisis unfold before our eyes. Our focus now must be on the safety of the people who remain in Afghanistan — American citizens, our allies, and those in danger of violent retribution from the Taliban. The U.S. has a moral obligation to help the Afghan people. We received word this week from USCRI that North Carolina is preparing to welcome Afghans who assisted American troops and are now fleeing for their safety. If you are feeling called to immedi-ately help with housing, education, or employment opportunities for these individuals who will be looking to rebuild their lives and restore their hope, please contact USCRI directly – 919-334-0072x4000 or [email protected].
