Title: Let’s Protect the Forests

Box 1: The fast pace of gasification of many dwellings in Armenia during the last several years has great influence on volume reduction of illegal logging. In 2003 the number of registered gas users was 132,612 and in 2010, it increased to 610,000 (increased by about 4.6 times).

Box 2: The greatest contributor to the disappearance of Armenian forests is the timber industry. According to the latest data, annual timber felling volume comprised around 340,000 m3. It should be noted that growth of forests has largely declined: in 1980s 3000-5000 ha forests were planted and only 1200 ha in 2000s.

Box 3: Only 31% of Earth is covered by forests and over 40% of oxygen is produced by tropical forests.

Box 4: Each year around 400 thousand m3 of forests are felled throughout the world. About 100 million ton of timber is used annually for paper production. To get 1 ton of processed paper, 17 trees are needed.

Box 5: One tree produces 180 liter oxygen within a day. Each individual uses 360 liter oxygen during a day and slightly more if engaged in intensive work: 700-900 liter. 1 ha forest absorbs 120-280 liter of carbon dioxide and produces 180-200 liter oxygen during a day.
