 A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

n this issue Robert Bauval (co-author ofThe Orion Mystery and The Message of the Sphi nx ) joins the growing list of

cutting-edge researchers who have con-tributed their by-line to th is publication. Sinceincept ion five years ago, Atlant is Risin g au-thors have included the very best of today’spublished wri ters—John Anthony West, Chri s-topher Dunn, Zecharia Sitchin, Jeane Man-ning, Eugene Mallove, Rand Flem-Ath, DavidHatcher Childress and others. Moreover, ex-clusive interviews have included the likes ofGraham Hancock, Colin Wilson, EdgarMit chell, James Redfield, Dannion Brinkleyand (in this issue) Jean Houston. Indeed, con-sidering that among these pages can be found more credible paradigm-busting information (including photos) than in any other publication, any

place, few could argue that w hen it comes to ancient mysteries, alternativescience and unexplained anomalies, AR has become the ‘magazine ofrecord’.

This is not to say, how ever, that we are prepared to rest on our laurels. On the contrary, from where we sit, it is clear that ahead lie many excitingnew frontiers and that our mission is just beginning.

Our mail and telephone response indicates many areas where theunique AR formula eventually could be effectively appli ed—i.e. book-publishing, sponsored research, education, mass media, cyberspace, etc. Itseems that many of our suppor ters already envision us at t he forefront ofthe campaign to change the w ay people on earth think—a view which w eattribute more to farsightedness than to a firm grasp on the immediatelypossible. At present w e remain somewhat restri cted. Eighty-four pages pub-lished quarterly can barely scratch the surface. However, given suffi cient

time, as well as the cont inued and grow ing support of our loyal readers,we rule nothing out.For the moment w e wi ll content ourselves w ith announcing a few

favorable developments.New in this issue, a consolidated catalog section (see page 72) for stu-

dents of our subject matter will offer expanded one-stop shopping in oneeasy-to-use resource.

Long-suffering subscribers to the Atlant is Risin g video series will bepleased to learn that our th ird tape English Sacred Sites: The Atlantis Con- nection has been completed. Hopefully, by the time you read this all backorders w ill have been shipped and you w ill agree wi th us that it was worththe w ait . The completion of these first three show s, as you might imagine, represented a major challenge to our resources, but one which w e believewas well worth pursuing.

Our web site is finally getting the upgrade it has needed for some time.Watch for many improvements as we endeavor to make atlantisrising.comthe kind of resource our readers deserve.

By the way, web surfers: don’t forget to go to the Extraordinary NewsNetwork (x newsnetw ork.com) to hear our i nterviews wi th leading-edgeresearchers like Christopher Dunn and John Anthony West.

COLD FUSION QUI BBLES

Your article “Cold Fusion Proven”by Eugene Mallove (Atlantis Rising #19) states that a nuclear process is oc-curring at low energies in cathodeloading experiments done by many re-searchers worldwide. Yet, while thereis ample evidence for nuclear activityin heavy element and helium produc-tion, coupled with surges in heat

output, the specific nuclear mecha-nism wh ich so easily bypasses our tra-ditional understanding of the quantumworld remains obscure. “Low EnergyNuclear Reactions” and “ChemicallyAssisted Nuclear Reactions” are simplynames for a real but as yet unexplainedscientific phenomenon.

I would like you and your reader-ship to note that all physical processesare subject to and mediated by thespacetime environment defined by spa-tial geometry and gravity, time rate ofpassage, and virtual particle produc-tion, distribution, range and annihila-tion. At the quantum scale, both the

uncertainty relation balance betweenconjugate variables in strong nuclearforce reactions and the strength of neu-trino/matter coupling in weak nuclearforce reactions are dictated by localspacetime geometry.

Therein lies the explanation for ex-perimental evidence of nuclear reac-tions at low energies. There is no ex-otic and previously unknown nuclearmechanism at w ork—these are just thesame nuclear processes, w hich we al-ready understand quit e well now oper-ating in a distorted spacetime environ-ment. Researchers worldwide usingcathode loading techniques have un-knowingly been modifying spacetimeproperties in the local regions sur-rounding atomic nuclei and it is thisdistortion of vacuum geometry at lowenergies which then allows normallyimprobable nuclear processes to pro-ceed.

My poster paper (was) displayed atNASA’s Breakthrough PropulsionPhysics Workshop in 1997. Severalquantum level rationales for localizedspacetime distortion at low energiesare proposed based on nuclear spin or -

ientation manipulation. Elements of

these rationales are also present incathode loading experiments alongwith possible indirect influences basedon background radio frequency fluxes, test cell alignment with the solar neu-trino flux, andtest cell workingmaterials. Anyconfirmation ofspacetime manip-ulation w ould bemost significant.A technologicalrevolut ion basedon the exploit a-tion of spacetimeproperties ofspace, time, andgravity would ulti-mately dwarf t hemere discovery ofa cheap energysupply.

The full com-pendium of pro-ceedings for theNASA conferenceis now availablefrom the NASACenter for Aero-Space Informa-

tion, phone 301/621-0390, publicationNASA CP 1999-208694. The compen-dium also contains plenary sessionpresentations on LENRs found in ex-periments by George Miley at the Uni-versity of Illinois and on possibleweight changes in solids suspendedabove spinning superconductors(spacetime distortion?) in experimenta-tion being done by NASA scientists.

In summary, there is no need to hy-pothesize previously unknown nuclearprocesses or behaviors to explain re-sults from cathode loading experi-ments. Inadvertent and previously un-recognized modification of the local

spacetime environment at low energiescan by itself explain these test resultsas proceeding from known nuclear in-teractions. Reflect and enjoy.

DINOSAUR DIMENSIONS

Ted Holden’s mathematical miscon-ceptions found fresh airing in yournew Portals section (#19, Impossible Dinosaurs ). He favors using themodern formula holding that a creature

doubling its physical measurements

will be eight times heavier but onlyfour times stronger to argue that dino-saurs could not have carried around allthat weight so the gravity in whichthey existed must have been less than

it is today. He isfond of bol-

stering thi s argu-ment by using

the wingspan ofthe teratom to

demonstrate con-cordance, that

the bird couldn’thave flown i f

gravit y were asstrong as it is

today.Mathematics

is only as valid asits assumpt ionsand in Holden’s

case the assump-tion is that dino-

saurs carriedaround the bulk

they did becausein today’s gravita-

tional field thebones would

support an

amount of matter that equaled thatbulk. Evolution does not produce bonestrength to suppor t w eight t hat doesn’texist. Having agreed to the computa-tion of dinosaur bulk using presentmeasurements of gravity, Holden cor-rectly concludes dinosaurs couldn’thave carried that bulk around. He thenabandons logic to propose that thegravity used to compute the bulk musthave been less. With bulk proportionalto bone strength and weight propor-tional to bulk, if less gravity were theanswer then the strength of the boneswould dictate even more bulk re-quiring that Holden propose even less

gravity unt il the dinosaurs were infinitein size and gravity didn’t exist.

The answer is the dinosaurs did notcarry the bulk around because thematter the bones carried w as heavier asthe result of a greater rather than lessergravitational force. The matter thebones evolved to carry was just theskin and muscles needed to p rotect thecreature from the environment ratherthan the mass of flesh modern measure-

HINDU CHRONOLOGIES

Visionary Egyptologists such asZachariah Sitchin, John Anthony West, etc. have done an excellent job of doc-umenting the evidence for advancedcivilizations in remote antiquity and

their possible demise due to geologicalcatacylsms, but the question as to whythe scientific knowledge itself was notrediscovered until now, has remainedunanswered. In his book The Holy Sci- ence , Swami Sri Yukt eswar, mentor ofParamahansa Yogananda, provides amissing piece of the puzzle.

Greek mythology speaks of fourages, the golden, silver, bronze, andiron ages. The ancient Vedic textsclearly delineate these four ages: theSatya Yuga, or golden age of 4,800years, the Treta or silver age, of 3,600years, the bronze or Dwapara age of2,400 years, and the Kali, or iron age of

1,200 years. In his introduction to The Holy Science , Sri Yukteswar gives anexplanation of the four ages, how longeach one is, and where the history ofthe last 12,000 years falls with respectto them. The period of 11,500 B.C until500 A.D. consisted of a 12,000 year DE-SCENDING cycle, meaning that man-kind as a whole was not advancing, butslowly declining during this period. The period from 11,500 B.C. until6,700 B.C. was a descending goldenage, meaning that mankind in generalwas much more highly developed men-tally and spiritually than now, with agradual decline. The period from 6,700B.C to 3,100 B.C was a silver age, notas advanced as the golden age, still de-clining. From 3,100 B.C until 700 B.Cwas a 2,400-year period of Dw apara orthe bronze age, declining. Finally camethe very lowest age, or Kali, the 1,200year iron age from 700 B.C. until 500A.D. During the four respective ages, mankind, on the average, uses 100%,75%, 50% and 25% of his brain ca-pacity.

Beginning in 500 A.D. mankindreached the lowest part of the cycle.

ments of gravity require hanging onthe bones. Not realizing that the fleshdinosaurs carried might itself havebeen heavier than it is today, early di-nosaur artists submerged the oversizeddinosaurs in swamps to displace the

bulk computed by current gravity con-ditions.

Which raises Holden’s concor-dance, bird flight. If gravity were lessin the past, then the atmosphere wouldhave had less weight and i t w ould havebeen diff icult even for birds of present-day size to fly. The fact that large birdscould fly demonstrates that in the pastgravity was greater because, like mantarays flying in the sea, the only way thata creature with a 25' wingspan couldfly is if it glided in a highly pressurizedand therefore soupy atmosphere, onewith greater than 15 pounds per

square inch and thus one resultingfrom a stronger field of gravity.Although the Portals note didn’t

specify, Holden believes that his atten-uated gravity resulted from orbitingblack holes. There is no physical basisfor black holes just as there is no phys-ical basis for the mass/gravity concept, both being mathematical constructsbased on the same types of misconcep-tions Holden lets creep into his dino-saur computations. However, if gravitywere proportional to something masswas doing, cooling, rather than to itsmere existence, then a cooling planetwould provide a basis for a diminishing

gravity and explain why dinosaurbones evolved to hold more weightthan they could carry today.

HELICOPTER H ERESY

I am an Egyptologist who has beenworking with John West on researchregarding the Red Pyramid, and I wasgoing to make a presentation at theSphinx conference that w as to havetaken place this month in Cairo, ex-plaining why I think Egyptologistsneed to take the plausibility of an earlydate very seriously. I am contacting

In Atlantis Rising #19, in the Con-tents and on p. 12, you reproduce asection of hieroglyphic text from theSeti I t emple at Abydos in w hichRichard Hoagland has identified flyingmachines, including a possible heli-copter. The text looks to me like a pa-limpsest (overcarving or overwriting) ➛

3  N   E   W   P   R  I   N   T   S  Then w e began a 12,000 ASCENDI NGcycle during which man’s mental andspiritual capacities began to once againincrease. The period from A.D 500 toA.D 1,700 w as an ASCENDING iron orKali age. Then, beginning in 1,700 A.D.mankind entered the ascending bronzeor Dwapara age. This age, which will

last 2,400 years, is marked by an under-standing of different forms of energy, interplanetary travel, etc. It’ s the age oftechnology. This wi ll be follow ed by anascending silver or Treta age of 3,600years when mankind as a whole de-velops telepathic and other mentalpowers, finally followed by a 4,800year ascending golden age, duringwhich our deeper spirit ual side is moremanifest. Technology as we under-stand it becomes largely superfluousduring the golden age, as our mentaland spiritual powers come to the fore. Then we begin again with another de-

cli ne. These ups and dow ns are causedby cyclic variations in the earth’s posi-tion relative to certain spiritual radia-tions emanating from the center of ourgalaxy, which affect man’s mental ca-pacities and therefore the rise and fallof civilizations...

Egypt and India preserved theknowledge from previous advancedcivilizations (Atlantis in the Treta Yuga,Lemuria in the Sayta Yuga, or goldenage) more successfully than otherplaces, as they were evidently betterprotected from the drastic geologicaland climatic upheavals which occurredin many parts of the world.

Douglas Gray Los Angeles,

PS: There have been many, many ofthese 24,000 year cycles during themillions of years mankind has been onthis planet. During past cycles, man-kind has built spaceships, settled Mars, etc.

GEOLOGICAL SEESAW?

During the last ice age 5-millioncubic miles of ice sat on North Americaand 5-million cubic miles of ice sat onEurope. This combined 10 millioncubic miles of ice could push up a landmass of rock of almost 3 million cubic

miles. (Rock is about 3-1/2 times asdense as ice). When the ice age was re-moved from North America and Eu-rope, North America and Europe roseup higher and the continent of Atlantissank beneath the seas.

If it were possible to put the iceback onto the continents of NorthAmerica and Europe, then we will in-deed see the continent of “AtlantisRising” (again) .

NEW FRENCH DIG TO SEEK PLATO’S ATLANTIS SOURCES

Did the Atlantis story originate w ith Plato? (graphic from English Sacred Sites: the Atlantis Connection )

The University of Paris excavatorsare expected to complete at least theirpreliminary digs by late summer orearly fall. They are particularly chal-lenged by the uncertainty of ancientSais’ location. Some eighty years ago,the noted German archaeologist LeoFrobenius, speculated that because ofthe similarity of the modern city’sname and its proximity to the site’s es-

timated position, todays Sa EI-Hagarshould cover the one-time capital ofthe Saite Dynasty. Based only on thisold, educated guess, Sais may or maynot lie where the French are presentlyconducting their research. If it is, theirchances of finding the Temple of Neithare good, because this sacred structurewas supposed to have been a massiveexample of ceremonial architectureand the foremost feature at Sais. Nearly

a century before Plato, the Greek histo-rian, Herodotus, visited the Templeand w rote of i ts splendor.

Originally known as Sais. it wasamong t he fi rst sites supposedly visitedby the Smsu-Hr, the “Followers ofHorus.” They were maritime culture-bearers said to have arrived near thedawn of dynastic civili zation at the NileDelta from over the sea in the far west,

where their sacred homeland sank be-neath the waves for divine punishmentof its sinful inhabitants. This parallel“myth” made the Temple of Nelth auniquely appropriate setting for an ac-count of Plato’s drowned civilization. In any case, Sais’ lost pillar could bethe most revealing piece of the puzzlesince he used it as the basis of h is ownAtlantis story, twenty-four centuriesago.s  BY FRANK JOSEPH

researchers from the University of Parisobtained long-sought-for permissionfrom Cairo authorities to Initiate a su-pervised dig Sa EI-Hagar . Located onthe Delta’s Rosetta branch of the NileRiver, the city and its environs wereplaced off limits by military authoritieswho forbade any foreign-sponsored ex-cavations in the vicinity for decades. The recent repeal of official restrictionsmeans that investigators are permittedto search for remains of the Temple ofNeith, in Sais, as the cit y w as ancient lyknown to the Greeks. It was here, Platowrote 2,400 years ago, that a columninscribed wit h the story of Atlantis wastranslated for visitors. Its existence andthe accuracy of its translation were ver-ified by another renowned Greek phi-losopher, Krantor, about 200 yearslater, and again as late as the 5th Cen-tury B.C.E. by Proclus, the outstandingthinker of late classical antiquity.

Follow ing the collapse of the Romanworld shortl y thereafter, the Temple ofNeith, with its Atlantis pillar, fell Intoruin and disappeared. Its rediscoveryand translation would silence genera-tions of skeptics who insist that Atlantis

was just a fictional allegory of Plato’sconceptualized utopia. More impor-tantly, recovering the Egyptian sourceupon which he based his Atlantean dia-logues, the Timaeus and the Krit ias ,could be the most convincing evidenceon behalf of Atlantis-as-fact, short offinding physical remains of the sunkencivili zation itself.

HEALING DNA CODES CAN BE FOUNDIN THE BIBLE, RESEARCHERS CLAIM

hen Michael Drosnin’s The Bible Code made the best seller lists in

1997, millions were exposed for the

first time to the notion that a previ-ously hidden design in ancient scrip-ture apparently could be unlocked toanswer many questions about today’sworld. Among followers of the eso-teric, however, the idea was nothingnew. Stan Tenen, for example, hasdemonstrated that all the letters in theHebrew alphabet, of w hich t he originalBible was composed, were created ofshadow s cast by the hand and containprofound meanings emanating from ahigher dimension.

The latest entry in the field comesfrom two American doctors who insistthat they have found codes in The Book of Numbers , which can be used

W

to repair damaged DNA. Dr. JosephBarber and Dr. Leonard Horowitz saythey have found nothing less than anelectromagnetic frequency code for“miracles”.

Using the ancient Pythagoreanmethod t o reduce the verse numbers ofa particular segment in The Book of Numbers  to single digit integers,Barber discovered a series of electro-magnetic sound frequencies. These, he

says—though once know n and under-stood by the church to have healingproperties and used in GregorianChant—have been lost.

Barber, a naturopath, and Horowitz,a public health authority, spent sixyears investigating the imp lications andhave produced a new book, Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse (Tetrahedron Press). Now other scien-tists, including Dr. Lee Lorenzen, awell-known researcher in water crystal-lization methods, have begun to con-firm many of the pair’s conclusions, in-cluding that the discovery “may bebeneficial in delaying the aging pro-

cess.”Dr. Leonard Horowitz

NEW STUDY VALIDATES POWER OFPRAYER TO HEAL SERIOUS ILLNESS

ew research is buttressing thecase that prayer can play a crucial

role in the curing of serious illness. Theevidence will come as no surprise to82 percent of the American public, which according to Time Magazine al-

ready believe prayer can work healingmiracles. For more than two decades Dr.

Norman Shealy, a neurosurgeon andfounder of the American Holistic Med-ical Association, has been investigatingclaims of extraordinary healingthrough divine intervention. His questtook him to the Philippines where hew itnessed psychic surgeons use only

N

he alternative healing theories of Bio-magnetism and its re-lated fields of ‘energy medicine’ are getting new support.

Recent experiments with dogs at the University of Oklahomahave shown that low-level magnetic fields can cause eitherslow ing or speeding of heart rate and other related alterations.

Medicine professors Benjamin Scherlag and William Yama-nashi used Pico-Tesla electromagnetic fields across the chestcreated by a device called a Jacobson Resonator to induce thereported alterations.

The results suggest that new noninvasive methods maysoon be available to cont rol heart rate and cardiovascular func-tions, as well as add fuel to arguments that low-level magne-tism can be used as a therapeutic tool.

For years the claimed benefits of magnetic techniques hasbeen hotly disputed by the medical establishment, forcingmanufacturers of magnetic-therapy products to avoid makingany health claims, on pain of government sanct ion.

bratory frequency.Shealy’s concl usion in a new bookSacred Heal ing—The Cur ing Power of Energy and Spir itu ali ty  (ElementBooks) is that all healing ultimatelycomes from a divine source and all ill-ness stems from an imbalance or sick-ness in the spirit of the individual pa-tient.

series of documentary videos.Entitled Engli sh Sacred Si tes: The

Atlantis Connection , the new 40-minute program continues the assaulton mainstream academic thinkingbegun by its two popular predecessors,Technologies of the Gods (the case foradvanced prehistoric technology), andClash of the Geniuses: Inventing the Impossible (the story of breakthroughinventions and their prevention).

English Sacred Sites: the Atlantis

Connection pulls together pow erful ev-idence linking Stonehenge, Avebury,Glastonbury and many other English lo-cations wi th an advanced ancient ordernow lost to history. Written and nar-rated by Atlantis Rising editor DougKenyon, the video is based primarilyupon the discoveries of Cambridge-trained scholar and author John Mi-chell. The program demonstrates howa mysterious network of perfectlystraight tracks, laid out for hundreds ofmiles across the English landscape, proves the great advancement of pre-historic science. Michell’s deep insightinto the origins of English culture illu-

minates a startling new vision of theroots of civil ization.

Among the few who have viewedthe program, the early consensus isthat beautiful on-location footage inter-spersed w ith spectacular 3-D animationand a great original music score makeEngli sh Sacred Si tes , not only movingand persuasive, but entertaining aswell.

GREAT PYRAMID REOPENS DOORSIN TIME FOR MILLENNIUM MADNESS

opened at midnight December 31.Originally called in to work on the

ventilation system in 1993, Ganten-brink used a robot camera of his owndesign to explore the shaft and revealwhat appeared to be a door with han-dles at the end. Antiquities officialswere subsequently enraged w hen Gan-tenbrink went public. But many stu-dents of the spot, including GrahamHancock and Robert Bauval have spec-ulated that the “door” might lead to acache of ancient records, an idea, ofcourse, derided by the establishment.Nevertheless, public pressure, if notthe appeal of expanded tourism, hasprevailed upon Hawass, who has alsopromised on that same new millen-

nium eve to place a gold encased cap-stone at the apex of the Great Pyramid.

For those interested in the truth ofancient origins and not the hype, thereremains a lingering concern that lostbehind all the smoke may be some-thing incredible, albeit real. If so, itseems unlikely that we will learn aboutit from the Egyptian Antiquities Au-thority.

Oh, by the w ay, the pow ers that be

have also announced the second pyr-amid at Giza (the so-called Chephren)will now be closed for a year. Seems anew ventil ation system is needed.

And who, indeed, can dispute theneed to clear the air at Giza?

he Great Pyramid is open for busi-ness again. The year-long restora-

tion by Egypt’s Department of Antiqui -ties is complete, so now the crowdscan return, at the rate of 300 per day, without the special appointmentswhich have been required for the pastyear. Unanswered are questions frommany quarters concerning secret tun-neling and other alleged efforts by au-thorities to carry on clandestine investi-gations.

Gaballah Gaballah, Egypt’s chief ar-chaeologist points to the work of Egyp-tian and French restorers, which is, heclaims, “compatible with the loftinessof the great monument.” Also cited arethe carefully mended cracks, the

cleaned up graffiti and the installationof a new lighting and ventilationsystem.

No further public statements wereforthcoming concerning further investi-gations of the so-called airshaft fromthe Queen’s chamber as explored byRudolph Gantenbrink. Nevertheless,Dr. Zahi Hawass, under-secretary of theGiza monuments is on record prom-ising that “Gantenbrink’s Door” will be

hen astronomer Halton Arp pub lished The Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies in 1966, hewas coun ted among th e wo rld’s most credible authorities on cosmology. But the

research published in that book would ultimately rup ture his relationship to the scien-tific mainstream, while fueling one of the most far-reaching scientific controversies of the twen tieth century.

Arp’s meticulous examination of each galaxy and its environment led h im to an ex-citing new discovery—that these galaxies are not isolated island universes, but are vitallyconnected. His systematic observations showed that active galaxies and quasars, large

and small spirals, quasar jets and x-ray clouds are all interac ting dynamically with eachother. But th is conclusion left astronomers perp lexed and eventually invited outrage. They

had come t o understand that the se objects in space w ere separated by vast distances. Tosee the connections betw een galaxies and quasars, they would have to unlearn whatthey already “knew” about a phenome non called redshift. Virtually all of modern cos-mology rests on an interp retation of this phenomenon—the shifting of the light spe c-

trum toward red w hen an ob servedbody is moving rapidly away from theobserver. It is redshift, wh ich enablesastronomers to calculate the velocityand distance of remote galaxies andquasars. And th is velocity calculationis the singular foundation supp ortingthe en tire edifice of modern theory.Remove the foundation and on ly a

house of cards remains. The hypothe-sized Big Bang, the “official” age andsize o f the observed universe, “dark matter,” and many of the favoritemathematical exercises of cosmolo-gists depen d on the assumed relation-ship betw een red shift and velocity.

The key to Arp’s analysis is the re -pe atedly-observed linkage of galaxiesand quasars. The standard interpreta-tion says that low-redshift galaxies arenearby ob jects and th at high-redshiftquasars, though con sistently ob-

served adjacent to such galaxies, must reside at the ou ter edges of the universe. In oth erwords, the visual proximity of the two can on ly be an accident. But Arp’s analysis showsthat the visual prox imity of quasars to nearby galaxies is far too consistent to be e x-plained by chance.

By analogy, imagine astronomers peering at a forest. Their theory p laces brown tree-trunks nearby and green leaves in the background , beyond the forest. For the leaves tobe seen from so far away, they must be incredibly bright—and much larger than th e treetrunks. But what if all of the observed leaves are close to a tree trunk, and where thereare no tree trunks there are no leaves? In effect, that is Halton Arp’s observation in hisfirst book, Quasars, Redshifts an d Controversies. He is simply telling us that ‘leaves be-long on trees.’ Quasars and galaxies go together.

But now th ere is more. In his latest book, Seeing Red: Redshifts, Cosmology, an d Ac-adem ic Science, Arp tosses in an additional admonition: “branches belong o n tre es,too.” With the help of recent x-ray satellite observatory images (ROSAT), he shows thatthose sup posedly remote quasars are actually connec ted to nearby galaxies by observ-able streams of gas.

Archaeologists FindHuman/ NeanderthalCrossbreed in Rabbit Hole  The remains of a four-year-old boy, showing traits of both human and Nean-derthal, was discovered by an archaeolo-

gist in a rabbit hole in Portugal. Thechild was ceremonially buried with redochre and pierced shells. Scientists saythis is the first evidence indicating that itmight have been possible for humansand Neanderthals to mate.

This can only mean that, in th ese observed cases, redshift is not an indicator of ve-locity. Quasars are not th e largest and most remote objects in the universe, but arenearby; and all of the reasoning involved in the Big Bang hypothesis and its derivativesimmediately collapses.

From Halton Arp’s first attempt to publish his discoveries in the Astrophysical

Journal (1967) to the present, h is work has been de layed, rejected, and scorn ed bynearly every astronomical publication. Soon allocation committees began denying tele-scope time for any project remotely conne cted to h is thesis. And yet, despite the profes-sional disgrace and the systematic obstructions, Arp refused to b e dete rred. Thoughforced to leave the count ry to pursue h is work, he is now w ith the p restigious MaxPlanck Institute in Germany. And gradually a generation of more open-minded re-searchers is learning of his work and seeking his counsel.

The un iverse we see through Halton Arp’s eyes is more alive than the conventionaluniverse of scattered shrapnel left over from a primordial explosion. Galaxies are beingborn and are evolving dynamically as we observe them. In its birth, a galaxy is ejectedfrom an active parent galaxy as a quasar, with its distinctive, high redshift. But as it ma-tures it loses this excess redshift—at least on e variable comp onen t of re dshift is a func-tion of age not a function of velocity. Arp shows u s how to trace the lineage of galacticfamilies, even our own Milky Way, for three or more generations. The universe we seebecomes smaller, more compact. But the limit of Arp’s universe, “the universe it is pos-sible for us to see,” become s much larger, much older, with n o end in sight.

Halton Arp’s books tell the w hole story of connection, e jection and evolution of gal-axies. They include the history of how the discoveries were made and the dep lorable re-ception the ideas have received by conventional science. And in th e p reface to Seeing

Red he issues a challenge: “I believe we must look for salvation from the nonspecialists, amateurs and interdisciplinary thinkers—those who form judgments on th e generalthrust o f the e vidence, those w ho are skeptical about any explanation, particularly offi-cial ones, and above all are tolerant of oth er p eople’s theories.”

ince the 1950s, wh en the first satellites were p laced in orb it around the e arth, thespace program has built first-class, deluxe, high-cost programs, without worrying

But what’s it going to cost? In response to a speech by George Bush in 1989, NASAput together a p lan to send a manned ex pedition to Mars. Bottom line, about $450 bil-lion dollars. Congress, reflecting constituent’s shock, said “no” again and again, everytime a new version of this plan was proposed.

Then along came Robert Zubrin. He’s slashed the price of exploring Mars to less thana fifteenth of NASA’s original estimate. And more—he shows how the less costly pro-grams are better as w ell. He talks about cheape r orb its that allow for longer exp lorationtimes and safer journeys. And he prop oses several ways to go native—using resourcesavailable on Mars for manufacturing fuel, air, water and food, rather than carrying it allthe way from earth.

ith the advent of the printing press in the 15th cen tury, when t he lit-

eracy level of some societies had reached critical mass, human con-sciousness changed—for the better and for the worse. Reading andwriting promulgated a left-brain imbalance that can be correlated withthe misogynist hysteria of witch burn ing, massacres and patriarchaldominance of whole populations.

These are the claims of Dr. Leonard Shlain, a vascular surgeon.Backing up his thesis with cop ious references, footnotes and bibli-ography, Shlain has linked the rise of complex societies interms of brain science and arrived at a new synthe sis of thehistory of human beh avior.

With increased literacy, people began to think in amore linear, abstract, sequen tial and p redominantly left-brain manner, c ommonly associated w ith masculineskills and values. The written word is employed to dis-criminate, analyze, and dissect the world into pieces, objects and categories. The right brain is holistic, simulta-

neous, synthetic and concrete. It supports communica-tion skills, metaphorical thinking, music and art and iscommonly associated with feminine skills and values. Bothsexes use both sides of the brain all the time, but the skillsof literacy require bot h men and women to sh ift predominantly into their masculineside, the left hemisphere.

Although right-brain religious messages of love and tolerance clearly benefited humansociety, when written dow n they we re often used to den igrate and destroy. The letter of the law demolished the feminine principle. Monoth eism persecuted p olytheism.

Part of Shlain’s thesis is that with the advent of radio, films, TV and computers ourspecies is entering a new age of integration. The p endu lum is swinging back towards thecenter in that bot h our right and left brains are increasingly engaged toward a ne w syn-thesis. Environmental restoration, healthcare, childcare—all reflect right-brain femininevalues w hich are enh anced by the considerable gifts of masculine left-brain technologyand organization.

In 1954, Nobel laureate Maurice Allais was studyingthe Foucault pendulum, seeing if he co uld find w ays tochange the steady course of the pen dulum by making theweight out of different materials (glass, iron) or changingthe temperature or air pressure. He happened to b e ob-serving during the June 30, 1954, and October 22, 1959,total eclipses of the sun. He detected “anomalies in themovement of the ... pendulum” during the time when theEarth, the Moon, and the Sun were aligned.

Two NASA researcher s, David Noe ver and RonKoczor of th e Marshall Space Flight Center w ill be stud-ying this 50-year-old mystery on August 11, 1999, the lasttotal solar eclipse of the cent ury for observers in the Northern Hemisphere.

our score years ago, most astronomers th ought o f the un iverse as a much d ifferentplace than we know it today. They accepted only one galaxy, the Milky Way, and

they pictured it as a ring-shaped object with the sun near the center. It was made up of clusters of stars of various sizes and densities. The 1920 mainstream astronomersthought that w hat we know today as galaxies were cu rious small clouds being repelledby light pressure from the Milky Way and would eventually evaporate into noth ing.

The great debate betw een Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis at the April, 1920meeting of the National Academy of Sciences was one of the milestones in the discov-eries that shaped today’s concep t of the universe. From our p resent viewpoint, both of the debaters were wron g. They agreed that th e universe was a great deal smaller than as-tronomers today “know” it is. Shapley argued (for the mainstream viewpoint) that theMilky Way was 300,000 light-years across, taking up most of the space in the known uni-verse. Curtis presented mathematical evidence that the Milky Way is only 30,000 light-years across and that t he sp iral nebulae are galaxies similar to the Milky Way.

You can read a reconstructed version of the debate here:WEBLINK: www.antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/htmltest/gifcity/cs_real.htmlWithin a few years after the debate, astronome rs reached the consensus that Heber

was mostly right. The Milky Way is 100,000 light-years across, but it is one spiral galaxyamong millions in a much larger universe. Today most astronomers are certain that theyknow the e ver-expanding size and shape of the un iverse and someth ing about its finiteage and explosive origin.

But is that the final word on the subject of cosmology? Are stars really isolated fusionfactories? Did the un iverse really begin in a Big Bang 12 billion years ago? Some re-searchers consider these to be op en que stions, and they continue to look for convincinganswers.

t the feet of Miami’s ritzyhigh rises, days before oneof the most significant ar-cheological finds in NorthAmerica was to be bull-

dozed, science researcher RichardHoagland arrived on scene. Recoveringfrom a heart attack (now doing well),and detained in Miami for medical rea-sons, warning bells went off in Hoag-land’s head when he visited what hasbecome known far and wide as theMiami Circle.

“I was angered, I was shocked, Iwas confounded,” Hoagland told At- lant is Rising .

The geometric precision of thecircle and the apparent astronomicalalignments of the site made it clear t hat

Athe Circle should be studied, not de-stroyed in the name of real estate de-velopment.

“Locally, nothing had been done tostop the destruction,” Hoagland said, although the site had been discoveredseveral months prior, in September of1998.

Instinctively, Hoagland picked upthe phone and called the most pow-erful man in America when it comes toancient mysteries and the unexplained,radio-talk ti tan Art Bell.

Hoagland teamed up with Bell andactivist Robert Ghost Wolf, launching acampaign of nightly radio updatesfrom the Circle on the Art Bell Show.In the daytime hours, Hoagland andGhost Wolf organized local citizens. They instigated a nationwide cam-paign, faxing everyone from local tele-vision stations, to the Miami developer

who intended to bulldoze the site, tothe Miami mayor and county archaeol-ogist, to the White House.

“Literally tens of thousands ofpeople responded,” Hoagland said.“And the next day, near the site, therewere back-to-back television trucks, lined up with all their antennaepointing toward their home stations. The whole thing tur ned around .”

On February 18, less than a monthlater, Miami-Dade County mayor AlexPenelas signed an executive eminentdomain order that placed the fate ofthe Miami Circle in the cour ts—withthe county of Miami Dade fighting thecity of Miami to preserve the site.

 ALTERNATIVE ARCHAEOLOGY

UNDERWATER TOWERS

LOCATED NEAR JAPANour years ago, sport diversnear the Japanese island ofOkinawa were shocked to ac-cidentally find a stately archstanding on the bottom of the

sea. About forty feet beneath the sur-face, the monument resembled Incastructures with which the divers werefamiliar, particularly for its nicely cutand precisely placed blocks of enor-mous stones. But who could have builtsuch an impressive feature, how longago and for what pur-pose? Was it part of asunken cit y? If so, howhad it come to arrive atits w atery grave?

These questionswere still circulatingamong the Japanesepublic, w hen more man-made stonework wasdiscovered in the gen-

eral vi cinit y of Okinawa. The new finds includedcircular foundations laidout in deliberate pat-terns, a slant-roofedbuilding identical to an-cient shrines foundashore, and a netw orkof paved boulevardsconnecting at least several underwatersites.

But an even more dramatic dis-covery w as made by divers in Sep-tember, 1996, near the small island ofYonaguni, 311 miles away. At 80-footdepths, they found a pyramidal plat-

form 160-feet long rising more than 60feet from the ocean floor in tiers andgreat steps from a foot to a foot-and-a-half on its southern flank. work with John Anthony West at theGreat Sphinx of Egypt’s Giza Plateau. The professional geologist and the re-nowned Egyptologist combined theirexpertise to convincingly demonstratethat the sculpted enigma crouching in

the Lower Nile Valleyis thousands of yearsolder than Establish-ment academics be-

Civilization itself,5,000 years ago.

Proof lay in the abun-dant evidence of se-vere water damage

suffered by theSphinx at a time

when Egypt’s climatewas radically dif-

ferent, with seasonally heavy rainfalls;in other words, the monument musthave already existed some 7,000 ormore years ago, not as recently as the2600 B.C.E. date insisted upon by con-ventional scholars. The erosional forcesof w ater over time may have also eradi-cated the Yonaguni structure of anytell-tale tool marks which could con-firm i ts man-made origins.

Dr. Schoch personally dove on thesunken feature several times. He foundthat it “is composed predominantly ofvery fine sandstones and mudstones ofthe type we geologists call the LowerMiocene Yaeyama Group. Rocks of thi s

type contain numerous, well-defined,parallel bedding planes that allow easyseparation of the layers, and they arecriss-crossed by many joints and frac-tures running parallel to one anotherand vertical to the bedding planes.Yaeyama Group sandstones lie ex-posed along the southeast and north-east coasts of Yonaguni Island, and Iwent there to see how they weatherunder current conditions above water.

in Ireland, replicates a celestial pointon Earth and anchors our world in theeternal.” He menti ons that the Egypt iantemple-island of Phil ae w as simi larlyoriented to the Tropic of Cancer 7,000years ago. It was about that same timethat the Yonaguni monument stillstood, at least partially, above sea-level,following the last ice age. Was theresome direct relationship between bothmonumental sites, even though theywere separated on opposites side ofthe world?

he world is full of mysteries. And given its mysticaltraditions, no place in the world remains moremysterious than India, a country and culture saidto be rooted in pr imordial timelessness.

Westerners have frequently tried to fathom themysteries of Mother India, and Western scholars, relativenewcomers on the world stage, have consistently tried todate Indian civilization according to western time lines, as-suming an intellectual superiority that routinely dismissesthe accumulated w isdom of millennia, including cult ural tra-

ditions that speak of humanity’s origin, lost continents, andadvanced prehistoric civilizations. But that wasn’t always the case. In the mid to late 19th

century, when scientific ideas about human origins had onlybegun to take shape in Europe, many early geologists and ar-chaeologists accepted the idea of the biblical Flood and lostcontinents (for w hich they found much hard evidence), evena landmass in the Indian Ocean—the great Southern Cont i-nent of British naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace. Even today, mainstream science theorizes that such landmasses musthave existed: Gondw analand and Pangea, though they arerelegated to extremely ancient epochs, 180 to 200 millionyears ago.

MOTHER OF ALL MOTHERLANDS

Lemuria, the term for a lost cont inent in the Pacific or In-dian oceans, came to l ife in the 1860s when geologists founda str iki ng similarit y betw een fossils and sedimentary strata inIndia, South Africa, Australia and South America. These geol-ogists surmised that a great continent must have existed inthe Indian Ocean or at least a land bridge or series of islands, and it was named Lemuria by the English biologist Philip LScalter after the lemurs of Madagascar. Madame Helene Bla-vatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society, w rote ext en-sively in the late 19th century of Lemuria, and in the 1920s,Colonel James Churchward claimed to have discovered cer-tain ancient tablets in India describing long lost Mu (Le-muria), a golden civilization said to have existed in the Pa-cific. Churchw ard devoted his life and study to br inging thelost Lemurian culture to l ife in a series of books.

Continental drift theory, which proposes the extremelyslow drifting of continents, and then plate tectonics, did

away with Lemuria in the minds of many, while satisfyingone of the essential tenets of modern scientific thinkingabout origins, uniformitarianism , which states that all nat-ural developments on Earth come about extremely slowly, incrementally, and in a more or less uniform fashion. Greatfloods, global cataclysm, and the submergence of continentsin recent prehistory smack of the biblical, and so the anti-biblical Darwinists of bygone days imposed the doctrine ofuniformitarianism  upon the early geologists and archaeolo-gists. The idea that large-scale cataclysm had anything to dowith prehistory, once considered heretical, only recently

came into fashion, on the heels of evi-dence that a large impact asteroidstruck the Yucatan area, causing theextinction of the dinosaurs many mil-lions of years ago.

But consider the ancient southAsian traditions that mimic the findingsof the early geologists, those that sayan inhabited continent once existed inwhat is now the Indian Ocean, a beliefthat thrives to this day among peoples

of southern India, Sri Lanka, and in theislands of the Andaman Sea off Ma-laysia.

One tradition emerges from ancientSri Lankan w rit ings, referring to a lostcivilization in the area now occupied

by the Indian Ocean and a landmassthat connected the Indian subconti-nent with the island of Sri Lanka, thekind of tradition dismissed as fable bythe modern day intelligentsia:

“…in a former age,” an ancient SriLankan text states, “the citadel ofRawana (Lord of Lanka), 25 palacesand 400,000 streets were swallow ed bythe sea…”

The submerged landmass, according

One man removes a piece of bonefrom its bag and holds it gently in hisleft hand. It s edges are weathered andworn. It looks like a vertebra, a joint ofa spinal column. In his right hand theman holds a pen resting on a piece ofpaper, on which he’s written thenumber of the envelope, the date and

his own name. He writes more, “Largebrown, white and gray mammal, four-footed, hoofed or split toe, walks ontoes. Appears mooselike with verylarge ears or possibly antlers.”

contained some 500,000 volumes ofworks, ranging from philosophy, as-tronomy, medicine, science and, mostprobably, the famous Hermetic tractsthat were to so much influence theItalian Renaissance fifteen centurieslater.

Legend has it that Ptolemy also com-missioned seventy-two sages to trans-late the Hebrew bible into Greek. Theyapparently completed the task in sev-

enty-two days. Still known today as theSeptuagint, i t i s this version that servedas Scriptures until the so-called KingJames Version .

In 48 B.C. Jul ius Caesar w as be-sieged in the Bruchion area wherestood the Library. To force his way out,he ordered that the fleet in the harborbe set on fire to detract the Egyptianforces led by Achil las. It is said t hat oneof the vessels set on fire collided withMuseion and the Library was badlydamaged by fire. Some 70,000 bookswere reported lost. But the greater partof the Museion survived.

Eight years after that event, it is

known that the library of King Per-gamum was sent by Mark Anthony to

Alexandria and the books probablyhoused in the Museion as well as in anew and smaller library called the Sera-peum, set in the western side of thecity. There is much controversy as to

whether the Serapeum became thenew seat of learning. At any rate, it iswell documented that the books of thegreat library, whether housed in theMuseion or t he Serapeum—or indeed inboth—were stil l much i ntact by thefourth century A.D. But toward the endof the fourth century A.D. the fate ofthe Library, as well as all other ‘pagan’temples in Egypt , was sealed by therise of Roman Christianity under thePatriarch Theophilus. omething quite extraordinaryis happening in the run up tothe third millennium. As ifwaked up by the mantra of anew spiritual age, the city of

Alexandria on the northern Mediterra-nean coastline of Egypt is experiencinga strange and exciting renaissance.

At the center of this renewal is theconstruction of the new library, which

bears the classical name: BibliothecaAlexandrina. The project is fundedthrough UNESCO at the tune of $300million and is being constructed by aBritish contractor, Balfour Beatty. Ac-cording to the latest estimates, theworks should be completed during thelatter part of the year 2000. Designedas a modern high-tech structure, itsroof shaped like a sort of sloping pyr-amid, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina willserve as a world repository for bookson the humani ties—a sort of modern-

day version of the fabled ‘Hall ofRecords’ of Atlantis. The Library, likethe Pyramids and the Great Sphinx, hasa universal appeal. Yet unl ike other an-

cient monuments, the Library ismostly known for actually not

being there—or rather forhaving been destroyed and

its intellectual t reasure-trove forever lost to

the world.

The origins of theancient library and

the story of its even-tual destruction are

shrouded in semi-legends and contro-versies. In 332 B.C.

Alexander the Greatinvaded Egypt and

founded the city ofAlexandria. Designed

along astrologicalalignments, the citywas intended to be

the intellectual centerof the Hellenic world.

After the death of Al-exander, one of h is gen-

erals Ptolemy becameking of Egypt. Crowned as

Ptolemy I, Soter ( ‘the Savior ’) in305 B.C., the monarch w as a

sensitive and learned man deter-

mined to create the dream of h is prede-cessor. He commissioned the construc-tion of the Museion or ‘Palace of theMuses’. This building, which was toserve as a center of learning, was set inan area known as the Bruchion andwas almost certainly the first ‘univer-sity’ complex known to the world.

The idea was to collect books fromall over the known world so that they

could be put at the disposal of scholarsas well as any member of the generalpublic who wished to consult them.Other than the huge source of ancientmanuscripts available from withinEgypt itself, Ptolemy devised a cleverploy. He ordered that all books foundon vessels coming to the port of Alex-andri a should be handed to the Library.A copy would then be made and re-turned to the vessel and the originalstored in the Library it self. It is said thatat the height of its glory, the Library

Caesarion, a temple built by Cleopatrain honor of Caesar and which alsoserved as a library, was wrecked andplundered by a Christian mob.

In 391 A.D. the so-called edict ofTheophilus calling for the closure of all‘pagan’ temples was read to the popu-lation of Alexandria. The Christians, taking their long-sought revengeagainst the ‘i dolaters’ as well as thescholars and erudi te of t he cit y—which

they also deemed ‘pagan’—threw them-selves on the Serapeum, the Museionand eventually on all the temples of an-cient Egypt and, with pick axes, spadesand all other tools they could get theirhands on, set about to plunder and de-

stroy these sanctuaries. The end of the enlightenment pe-

riod of Alexandria is symbolized by thefate that befell the lovely Hypatia. Per-haps the world’s first woman scholar,Hypatia was a gift ed mathematicianand philosopher and had founded thefamous Neoplatonic academy of Alex-andria. While riding alone in herchariot, she was pulled down by a

Christian mob, dragged into a church, stripped naked and cut to pieces withabalone shells.

By the time the Arabs invaded Egyptin 642 A.D. and were handed the keysof Alexandria, the city had longstopped being a center of learning andhad fallen, like the rest of the Christianworld, into a deep and dark age of big-otry and religious zeal. Yet much of thecity’s architectural splendor still sur-vived. When the Arab general, Amr, en-tered the city he so marveled at whathe saw that he wrote these words tothe Caliph in Medina: “I have taken acity of which I can but say that it con-

tains 4000 palaces, 4000 baths, 400theatres, and 12000 shops…”

And other Arab writers were to re-port that:

“Alexandria is a city containingmuch marble in pavements, buildingsand columns (colonnaded streets). Thecity was all white and bright by nightas well by day. By reason of the wallsand pavements of white marble thepeople used all to wear black and redgarments; it was the glare of themarble which made the monks wear

black. So, too, i t w as painful to go outat night, for the moonlight reflectedfrom t he white marble made the city sobright that a tailor could see to threadhis needle wi thout a lamp…”

Although Alexandria flourished for awhile under the Arabs, the canal thatsupplied water to the city from theNile silted up and the city fell into de-cline. By the time Napoleon came in1798, the population had dwindled to

a few thousand, and all that remainedof the marvelous metropolis was a fewobelisks and the ruined city walls.

After the defeat of Napoleon’s armyat the battle of Alexandria under theBritish, Egypt was placed under the

rule of the Khedive Mohamad Ali. De-termined to modernize Egypt, Mo-hamad Ali opened wide the doors ofthis ancient land to foreign investorswho helped him rebuild Alexandria. In1882 the British fleet stormed Alexan-dria and made Egypt an unofficial partof the British Empire. It is from this pe-riod till the late 1950s that Alexandriabecame one of the most cosmopolitan

cities in the world, with Greeks, Ital-ians, Maltese, French, English, and Ar-menians all mingling with the indige-nous Arabs. Wonderful baroque stylebuildings were raised, public gardens, squares and the longest seafront prom-enade in the w orld.

In 1956, after the Suez War, therebegan a mass exodus of the cosmopol-itan society, leaving the city to fall intodecline again. By the late 1980s thecity’s population had mushroomed to 6million souls and begun to break at theseams. Drainage overflow ed, garbagewas left uncollected, streets were unre-paired and the wonderful old-style ar-

chitecture was systematically de-stroyed to make way for cheap housingblocks. Luckily, in 1997, a new gov-ernor, Dr. Abdel Salem Al Mahgoub, took the initiative to restore the city toits past glory.

Architects, engineers and sponsorsall joined forces to help him in thistask. A man who has played a pivotalrole in this new renaissance of the cityis Mohamad Awad, an architect whowas educated at the famous VictoriaCollege and who got his diplomas in

Sw itzerland and France.Awad has been a relent less cam-

paigner for the proper restoration ofthe ancient monuments and what heterms the ‘Cosmopolitan City’. He hasfounded the Alexandria RestorationTrust and is now in charge of severalprojects to embellish the city. Amongthem is the restoration of the CanopusWay, the oldest street in the world stillin use and the pride of the ancient Ptol-

emaic city. It runs from east to west,w ith one end know n as the Gate of theMoon and the other the Gate of theSun. In its heydays under the Ptolemiesit was flanked with colonnaded arcadesand luxury villas and palaces. Knownas the Rue Fuad until the 1950s, it isnow called Horeya Street. I met Mo-hamad Awad in his offices in June todiscuss the future of Alexandria and itsnew role in the world.

“Here in Alexandria,” said Awad,“was invented algebra, Eucl idean ge-ometry, modern astronomy and Neo-platonic philosophy. It was in this citythat the hermetic texts and probably

the Gnostic writings were composed. It was here that Jesus became one w ithGod and that the Trinity was con-ceived. It was here that came all the‘greats’—Alexander, Caesar, Augustus,Mark Anthony, Napoleon, Churchi ll—topay homage. Alexandria is a symbol ofwhat is best in civilization: learning andknowledge and, most of all, cosmopoli-tanism, where different creeds andraces learn to live peacefully side byside and mutate, exchange and blendinto a creativity that made the world abetter place to be in. Isn’t this worthrestoring?”

As a native of Alexandria myself, Icould only agree with Awad. But mythoughts went back to the new librarythat is being built. Wouldn’t it be won-derful i f the Rosetta Stone was re-turned here by the British to be placedin i ts central hall? Wouldn’ t th is be awonderful mil lennium gesture of good-w ill and renaissance for this bereavedworld?

As if to show their approval, thegods of ancient Alexandria have de-cided to join in the restoration. Re-cently two teams of French archaeolo-gists and divers have rediscoveredmany of the ancient palaces and tem-

ples that were sunk in the easternharbor after a huge tidal wave hit thecoastline in ancient times. Jean-YvesEmpereur, who l eads one of the teams, believes he has also found the remainsof the ancient Lighthouse, the Pharos.Sphinxes, obelisks and statues havealso been retrieved from the sea. A fewof t hese, Empereur has stated, w il ladorn t he entrance of the new library.

Will Alexandria and its famous Mu-seion experience its Second Coming?Only time will tell.

NOW THE STORY IS TOLD receding every greatadvance and many of

the setbacks in our history, the geniuses of both lightand darkness, have battledfor the hearts and minds ofthe rest of us. But, despitethe stubborn resistance ofthose committed to theprimitive notions of earlierages, the outrageousimpossibilit ies of onegeneration continue tobecome the revolutionary

breakthroughs of the nextand the basic necessities ofthe future.

Still... in the 20thcentury, while theMarconi's...the HenryFord's...the Thomas Edison'shave succeeded in capturingmost of the attention, others with technologicalprowess bordering on themiraculous, strangely, havegone unnoticed. Men withnames like Tesla, Moray,Rife, Russell andSchauberger, laboring inalmost complete obscurity, and achieving almostincomprehensiblemiracles--free energy,anti-gravity, transmutationof the elements, physicalrejuvenation and more--were yet largely rejected, ridiculed and despised by thescientific establishment of their day. But now, a few decades later, a new breedof inventors, scientists and researchers is making rapid, if yet unpublicised, strides toward unraveling the astonishing secrets of those unsung giants whopreceded them. Today, many of these new technological magicians findthemselves on the threshold of breakthroughs, still believed, by many, to be thestuff of hallucination.

If shared openly, these secrets could solve major p rob-lems for humanity.

How does a dysfunctional speciesregain power over its destiny?

Jonathan Eisen of New Zealandgives one answer, in his new edition ofSuppressed Inventions and Other Dis-

coveries . “Somewhere we know w ithinthe human spirit is a place of creativityso powerful and so encompassing thatgiven half a chance we can change thiscourse, change this moment andchange history.”

This article visits others who reallydetermined to help humankind“change this course” and acknowledgean obstacle facing us—out -of-cont rol“black operations” sucking up taxpayerdollars and not sharing with citizensthe resulting know ledge.

Science-related secrecy predates in-cidents such as the 1947 Roswell, NewMexico reports of a crashed UFO. In

1941 the atomic bomb was born in se-crecy. In a few years, more than a half-milli on Americans were involved in theproject. Dr. Carl Jensen, professoremeritus of communication studies atSonoma State University, says “Suc-cessful information-control practicesemployed by the Manhattan Projectpaved the way for the news manage-ment, manipulation and obfuscation...”

The growing secrecy culture fed on

fear. And on greed. My father, a U.S.marshal in Alaska during World War II,saw military-purchased bulldozersrusting on Alaskan beaches as sym-bolic. He said corruption of the na-tional character began when defensecontractors got a taste of free-flowingmoney and learned that bureaucratscould easily be conned. It ended theera in w hich “a man’s word” —his integ-ri ty—was his most valued asset.

President Dwight Eisenhowerwarned about the “military-industrialcomplex”. Today, an entity within thatmultibillion tax-dollar complex runs“black ops”. “Black” means even theU.S. Congress is kept ignorant of theamounts of taxpayer money that go to

certain operations and of what’s devel-oped with that money. Black ops areformally called Unacknow ledged Spe-cial Access Projects (USAPs).

“If we’re ever going to allow theLight to flourish on this planet, weneed to take a close look at what isbeing done in the shadow s, becauseit’s subverting everything that we’retrying to bring forward.” That quote,by investigative reporter Lars Hanssonon a Laura Lee radio show , many be-lieve sums up t he secrecy problem.

tones he adds that we won’t get to thebottom of the secrets until the publicdemands it. Although people arelearning through the Internet, Cheva-lier says it’s no substitute for publicmeetings in stirring up action and ef-fecting change.

At the conservative end of the end-secrecy groundswell is retiring SenatorDaniel Patrick Moynihan, formermember of four presidential cabinets

and former representative to theUnited Nations. (Hillary RodhamClinton is circling around the NewYork constituency that elected him forfour terms.) In his 1998 book Secrecy he concludes: “It is time to dismantlegovernment secrecy, this most perva-sive of Cold War era regulations. It istime to begin bui lding the supports forthe era of openness that is already

upon us.”However, in

Moynihan’s indexthere’s no mention

of UnacknowledgedSpecial Access Pro-

jects. If Dr.Greer iscorrect about most

government officialsbeing kept out ofthe loop, perhapsMoynihan doesn’teven possess deep

know ledge ofUSAPs. How ever hedoes document se-crecy as a mode of

governmental regu-lation since World

War I, and howagencies gather

power by keepingsecrets from eachother. Did youknow the CIA

started life as a committee? Its mandatewas to sift briefing papers for the presi-dent. Of that, 5,789,625 documentswere classified in the government’sfiscal year 1996.

Secrecy is viewed w ithin a broaderperspective in a relevant chapter ofThe Truth , a free book on the web(www.thewordistruth.org) by SiliconValley physicist and entrepreneur Jo-seph Firmage He’s sat across the tablefrom leaders in science and the mil itary

who’ve confirmed the truth of recov-ered technology. “The best private in-formation I have been able to secure isthat the organization responsible formanaging the domain is comprised ofless than 1,000 people and w as longago privatized and pulled entirely out-side of the machinery of the politicaland military command structure.” In-siders report to a self-selected gov-erning body, mostly industrialists, helearned. “It is believed that a growing

“We estimate that this break-through occurred between 1954 and1957. Ben Rich of Lockheed Skunk-works, prior to his death, confirmed toa CSETI consult ant that we alreadyhave the means to travel among thestars, but these technologies are lockedup in black projects and it would takean act of God to ever get them out tobenefit humanity.”

Perhaps we caneach be helpers inthat “act” . Greer sug-gests grassroots ac-tion, as do re-searchers Richard

Boylan, Larry W.Bryant of MUFON,Peter Gersten, BradSparks of CitizensAgainst UFO Secrecy(CAUS), StephenBassett of the Para-digm ResearchGroup, and otherscalling for a UFOballot init iative.Former astronautEdgar Mitchell asksfor congressional in-vestigation of re-verse-engineeredtechnologies. Dr.Brian O’ Leary sug-gests amnesty forscientists involved in the secrecy cul-ture. Michael Lindemann reports UFOissues on Jeff Rense’s talk radio showSighti ngs .

Another approach is that of RemyChevalier of Connecticut, who I firstknew as an activist who connects envi-ronmental and free energy sectors.Later I learned he’s a grandson of phi-losopher Georges Gurdjieff and son ofan influential French newspaperman, and thus grew up among revealing con-

other times thought they were it, butthey were wrong: we’re it!”

Houston’s work has often focusedon the “Mythic” dimension. A Mythic Life (Harper San Francisco, 1996) wonhigh acclaim from t he crit ics. She

points out that most of us live ten to ahundred times the experience of ourancestors and at a level of intensifica-tion they never knew. Because of this,we have the opportunit y to expand ourlives to “mythic proportions.” Deeplyinfluenced by Joseph Campbell’s book,The Hero with a Thousand Faces (which she first read at the age of ten!),Houston feels that myth is “the DNA ofour becoming... It is encoded in our bi -ology, part of the psychic template, part of the patterning of our possi-bility,” she says, noting that psycholo-gist Carl Jung referred to mythic and ar-chetypal structures as a kind of ‘tertiaryorgan system’. “Myth gives us a cartog-raphy of inner space and a mapping ofmany routes we can take towards alarger, more archetypal life.” Having de-cided there were too few female arche-types, Houston set out to forge a newone. At 14, she formed a teen-age“gang”: “It was me and 12 boys on mo-torcycles,” she recalls. “We rodearound East Texas evangelizing and‘saving’ people...Some people would

say that those days never ended,” shelaughs.

Houston has developed what shecalls “Sacred Psychology,” focusing onmoving the “local,” ego-based self intothe We Are realm, where an individual

can communicate and co-create withsaintly or mythic archetypes, a pathshe sees as much more productive thantraditional psychological analysis, andone which she describes in detail inher book, Search for the Beloved .

“Our age tends to ‘pathologize’rather than mythologize’,” she says, “ sowe often miss the patterns of possi-bility, the weave of wonder that fillsour lives.” In contrast, some of ourforefathers, including Thomas Jef-ferson, tended to mythologize, seeingthe social pathol ogyaround them as opportuni-ties to reinvent t heir

country. “ Their letters,”notes Houston, “are filledw ith affirmations of grati-tude for the pattern ofchallenge and opportunitywithin the play of theirlives, as if some divine ar-chitect w ere helping themto realize the fundamentalpossibi lit ies just beneaththe surface.” She has ex-plored the life of ThomasJefferson in depth in herbook, Publi c Like A Frog ,explaining that he is “ thearchetypal American.”

According to Houston, America hasa guiding archetype which she calls,“The Hopeful Explorer.” “America istapping into depths of itself that itnever had to before,” she says. And, assomeone who figuratively kisses theground when she returns from abroad,she offers a perspective shared bymany immigrants: “In spite of all ourhorrendous shadows and problems, westill have a level of honoring of citi-zenry, a kind of humor about our-selves, a frontier mentality where any-thing is possible. And the level ofvolunteers here is truly extraordinary;

the percentage of Americans in serviceto others is well above that of other na-tions.”

Having traveled extensively (shesays she is one of the best-traveledpeople who has ever lived), Houstonsees herself as a “global midw ife,”helping cultures give birth to a richerversion of themselves as they find aplace in the emerging planetary com-munity.

As a consultant to the United Na-tions, UNICEF and other international

JEAN HOUSTONagencies, she presents transformationalworkshops to people and organizationsall over the world. For her, this meanstotal immersion in the culture she isvisiting, choosing to live among thepeople, even in humble conditions, and, sometimes risking her life. I’vebeen shot at, had tanks chase me, beenin the middle of wars and plagues, youname it,” she says. Undaunted, she w il ltypically go in and meet with the local

leaders, learn their cultural stories and, over a period of ten days or so, assistthe entire village to enact them. “Whatemerges,” she says, “is a sense of truecommunity, ideas for reformingschools and education and practicalways to enhance indigenous traditionsand spirituality w hile joini ng the globalsociety. As we’re going global, indi-vidual cultures are becoming more ofwho they are, not less”, emphasizesHouston. Her husky, almost androgy-nous voice moves easily from accent t o

accent when she recountsher adventures, reflectingthe years she spent in the-ater and her ongoing loveaffair with drama and cul-

ture.Her secrets to

astounding energy and en-durance are frequent

workouts with a trainer,daily psycho-physical exer-

cises she developed w ithher husband, Robert Mas-ters, a wonderful sense ofhumor and “a lack of self-consciousness.” “So many

people are caught up inwhat others are going to

think,” she says. “They’re bags of skin, dragging around dreary lit tle egos!”She’s been free of such constraints

from an earl y age; at fourteen, she wasalready 5'11" tall, comfortable with her-self, fascinated with the world aroundher and eager to assist those less confi-dent. “My parents taught me the valueof service, the glory of it, the sheer de-light in being able to reach out toothers and see others responding...Asense of community came naturally tothem and w as given to me,” she says.

She advises that, today, teenagersneed a way to acknowledge their pas-sage into adulthood. “We need rituals

for adolescents where they go on the‘night journey’ and learn the secrets ofthe t ribe; creative challenges and expe-riences that are both scary and awe-some. Allow them to die in some senseto their childhood, and they are thenreborn to taking on the full responsibil-ities of maturi ty. When w e create pow -erful rites of passage for youngpeople,” she states, “ we see an end tothe suicide pacts.”

 ANCIENT MYSTERIES

s  BY STEVEN SORA

small island off the fog-shrouded coast of NovaScotia may conceal theworld’s greatest treasure, that of the order of the

Knights Templar. Missing since thefourteenth century, the treasure of theTemplars is reputed to contain massive

amounts of gold and silver bullion, thecrown jewels of royal European fami-lies, religious artifacts sacred to both Ju-daism and Christianity and documentsthat may be as explosive now as whenthey were buried. The current ownerof what has been dubbed “theMoney Pit” estimates the value ofthe potential treasure to beover one billi on dollars.

The history of the Oak Is-land excavation begins in1795 when three young menwith time on their hands de-cided to search for CaptainKidd’s booty. On tiny Oak Is-

land they found a ship’stackle hanging from a treebranch and a nearby depres-sion in the soil. After diggingtwo feet down they reached alevel of carefully laid flagstones, notnormally found on the island. They dugfurther and at ten feet reached anoaken platform. Successive platformswere found at twenty and thirty feet, encouraging the diggers but surpassingtheir abilities. Several years later a com-pany, the Onslow Syndicate, wasformed by several prominent citizensto explore further. The oak platformscontinued until at the 90-foot level aninscribed stone with a simple code re-vealed that treasure would be foundonly “forty feet below”. The code mayhave been a false clue leading theminto a booby trap. The shaft was soonfilled with seawater that would notonly stop further excavation; it wouldremain an unbeatable obstacle for thenext tw o centuries.

A series of flood tunnels had beendug from coves on both sides of the is-land. The seawater entered from clog-proof drains concealed with coconuthusk and eelgrass. For nearly tw o hun-dred years work has continued in an

on-and-off fashion as one treasurehunter after another would invest onefortune after another in pumps, indrills, in coffer dams to stop the sea-water, and even heavy construction ma-chinery. To date the money pit hasyielded only a handful of items in ex-change for millions of dollars and fivelives it has claimed. Gold chain, an ironscissors, a piece of undecipherableparchment are among the paltry re-

wards to date. There has been a wealthof theories.

The popular but implausibletreasure of Captain Kidd, has holes, thelargest being that most of Kidd’streasure was found on Gardiner’s Is-land, off the eastern end of New York’sLong Island where the Gardiner familyhad allow ed a host of pi rates access tohis domain. Hidden payrolls of Frenchand British ships are possible, but the

motive of constructing such a massivevault is thin. From Vik ings to UFO’s, Az-tecs to Huguenots, the list gets longer, but the combination of means and mo-tive is the litmus test. One plausibletheory has a battered Spanish treasureship driven off-course by storm, di-verted by currents to Nova Scoti a.Mining engineers construct the booby-trapped vault, hide their precious

goods, and attempt a return to Spain toget a stronger ship. On route, anotherstorm finishes the work of the first. Thecrew and their secret perish. Until theMoney Pit gives up its treasure, the de-bate will go on unresolved.

Concurrent with the two-hundredyears of excavation, the owners of theMoney Pit and several independent re-searchers have been attempting to de-termine just what treasure does liebelow the surface.

In 1954 the owners of the Money Pit

and gold of the temple of Jerusalem to-gether with manuscripts and docu-ments that w ill add to man’s know ledgeof human history. From other sources, the belief that the documents con-cealed may include the earthly gene-alogy of Jesus Christ. The Holy Grail, ac-cording to Holy Blood, Holy Grail authors, may not actually be a chaliceor dish, but a bloodline extending fromKing David through Jesus to modern

times. One int riguing clue is that SirFrancis Bacon wrote of preserving im-portant documents in mercury. Flaskswith a residue of mercury have beenfound on Oak Island.

While the debate remains unre-solved, the indisputable truth is thatsomeone with a great deal of knowl-edge and engineering expertise wentthrough a lot of trouble to concealsomething. And that they finished theircomplex project at least before 1795.The carbon dating process pushes thedates back as early as 1390 and as lateas the 1660s. Who might have had themotive to construct such an elaboratecomplex before European colonizationreached Nova Scot ia? Who would hadsuch an important treasure to protect? And who might have had the ability andthe manpower to design and constructsuch a device?

Around the year 1118, the nine menthat made up the original Knights Tem-plar returned to France from Jerusalem.Ostensibly their mission had been tomake safe the roads for Christian pil-grims visit ing the Holy Land—a seem-ingly overwhelming task for a handfulof men. The real purpose might havebeen completely different. The early

knights stationed themselves in thestables of Solomon’s Temple and basi-cally conducted a treasure hunt. Whenthey returned, they received a heroeswelcome and w ere the subject of St.Bernard’s attention. Bernard of Clair-vaux preached so powerfully on behalfof the Christian warriors that he builtthe tiny group into an order, rivalinghis own Cistercians. The difference wasthat the Knights Templar were warriormonks. Pledged to the church and theirorder, answering to no earthy powerotherwise. Young men from wealthyfamilies of Europe flocked to join theorder, pledging their inheritance. No-

bles donated land and estates. Soon theTemple would grow into Europe’s firstbank. Europe’s first families wouldpledge jewels and land as col lateral forloans from the Templar bank.

Ironically, Templar success wouldcontribute to the order’s downfall. No-bles grew envious of the wealth andpower of the order but it was not until

was so great the order would fail. The debt of King Philip of France to

the Templars was great, in terms ofboth the money they had lent the kingand in saving his life from the mobs ofParis. There was, however, no mutualadmiration between the borrower andthe lender. When the King asked to

join the order he was refused. His hos-tility to the order induced him tomount false charges against the Tem-

plars and to bring in the Roman Pope.In one fateful day, Friday, October 13,1307 the armies of France w ould attackTemplar headquarters and arrest hun-dreds of knights. They would be tor-tured until they confessed to anycharges leveled by their torturers. These included devil worship, homo-sexuality, spitting on the Cross andworshipping an idol in the form of a se-vered head. Many would die during tor-ture; others would be burned at thestake.

While the goal of defeating theorder had succeeded, the real goal ofKing Philip had failed. Before thatfateful October day, the Paris Temple, the headquarters of the world’s onlybank, had been tipped off. The treas-ures had been loaded on wagon trainsand carried overland to the port of LaRochelle. There the wealth of theorder was placed aboard Templarships. The Templar fleet then simplydisappeared.

The destination of the Templar fleethas been debated since. Templarsmight have found refuge in Portugalwhere their organization survived asthe Knights of Christ. They might havefound refuge in England under King Ed-

ward, who would take his time inseeking out and prosecuting Templars. The numerous islands off the west andnorth coasts of Scotland are a verylikely refuge. Templars and the King ofScotland had much in common. Bothsuffered under the ban of excommuni-cation, and both would soon be underattack by King Edw ard of England.

Robert the Bruce earned his excom-munication by stabbing his rival todeath on the altar of the GreyfriarsChapel. He gathered two importantbishops and several nobles and hadhimself declared king on the Stone ofScone. After Robert the Bruce declared

himself king of Scotland, he had ironi -cally become an outlaw. He spent yearsliving in caves, losing one familymember after another to the English, only to emerge victorious at the Battleof Bannockburn. While hi story recordsmany wars and batt les where the Eng-lish army was the better-trained andbetter armed force and went to battle
