EARLYRAYS

he days of robotically exploring the in-terior chambers of the Great Pyramid at

Giza are not over. In fact, a team from Leeds

University in England, under the supervisionof Egyptian Antiquities Director ZahiHawass, will attempt to go where no one hasgone before, at least since the days the an-cient structure was built.

At issue are so-called shafts sloping up-ward from the north and south walls of theQueens chamber which appear to terminateafter 60 meters at mysterious doors. In 1992,engineer Rudolf Gantenbrink was the first tosend a small robot up the south shaft and tophotograph what appeared to be a doorequipped with copper handles. Gantenbrinkhad been operating without the blessing of Hawass and soon was given his walking pa-

pers. No further effort was made to follow upon Gantenbrink’s discovery until 2002 whenanother robot—this time with Hawass ap-proval and a worldwide television audience—climbed the passage leading from thechamber’s south wall, approached the“door,” and then proceded to drill through it.On the other side of the barrier, though, wasyet another barrier. Subsequent explorationof the north passage from the chamber pro-duced a similar result. That was the waythings were left until this year when Hawassannounced the new robot project.

According to Dr. Robert Richardson of Leeds University School of Mechanical Engi-neering, the new robot is prepared to keepgoing until it reaches the end of theshaft, to drill through whatever isthere, and to find whatever liesbeyond. The group, saysRichardson, has no pre-conceptions and willfind what it finds.

purpose of the Great Pyramid itself. Hawahimself is among those who believe tstructure is fundamentally a tomb. He has dicated that he thinks the current explor

tion may ultimately locate a mummy, somthing which, conspicuously, has not befound in any of the pyramid’s previously eplored parts. Others have suggested that treal purpose of the Great Pyramid was to athe pharaoh’s passage to the afterlife. Sothers, like engineer Christopher Dunn, haargued that the structure was, in fact, a grepower plant.

As for the Queen’s chamber shafts, themselves, Dunn has pointed out that both end the same height above ground and that thedesign appears consistent with passagewafor some kind of liquid, and that the copp“handles” look like nothing so much as flu

switches capable of closing some kind of eletrical circuit when the shafts were fillto a sufficient height.

Maybe soon we will all knothe truth or, perhaps,

dent is unavailable; since, before 1967, theMinistry of Defense, citing a lack of public in-terest, routinely destroyed all UFO reportsover five years old. According to Britain’sDaily Telegraph, though, the story wasbrought to light in memos and correspon-dence from between 1995 and 2003 when aBritish Physicist attempted to investigate astory related by his grandfather who was oneof Churchill’s personal bodyguards. The phys-icist had been told by his mother that her fa-ther, though bound by the official secrets act,had told the story to her when she was nine

he fate of the head of Johnthe Baptist has finally been

leared up. That, at least, is whatgroup of archaeologists, in-

luding Bulgaria’s ministerwithout portfolio Bozhidar Dimi-rov, would now have us believe.

Dimitrov, the former director of Bulgaria’s National History Mu-eum, says a reliquary in thefth-century monastery on Svetivan island in the Black Sea pro-uced the treasure for a recent

expedition. If subsequent re-earch confirms the authenticity

of the find, it will surprise many.

John the Baptist, accordingo the New Testament, prophe-ied the coming of Jesus Christhen later baptized him in theRiver Jordan. J ohn was eventu-lly beheaded by the emperor

Herod as a favor to the daughterof his (Herod’s) wife. The storyas been preserved in the

Richard Strauss opera Salome.St. J ohn is especially revered in

the Eastern church. Many sectsthroughout Asia assign him avery special role; in some cases, even preeminent to J esus. Somebelieve that his head was one of the key relics in possession of the Knights Templar.

The bones found in Bul-garia—once part of the Byzan-tine empire—include fragmentsof a skull, bones from a jaw, atooth, and an arm. It should be

added that many countries in theregion claim to have the bones of  John the Baptist, including Turkey, Montenegro, Greece,Italy, and Egypt.

The quest for the remains of St. John even provided the back-ground for a recently broadcastepisode of Poirot. Though the TVdrama focused on a more recentmurder, the ancient killing of anenigmatic saint clearly continuesto disturb even jaded modernsensibilities as do few othercrime stories.

n Atlantis Rising, (March2010) Philip Coppens de-scribed rumors of secretpassageways under the Giza

Plateau including brief details of an illegal excavation that oc-curred in September 2009. Theillegal excavation was apparentlya search for Edgar Cayce’s Egyp-tian Hall of Records. Until re-searcher Bill Brown asked me forassistance in arranging ameeting with John Van Auken,Director of the Association ForResearch & Enlightenment(ARE), I was not aware of the de-tails. Oddly, only a few days be-fore Brown’s request, he sent anemail stating that the ARE wasinvolved in a coverup with Dr.Zahi Hawass, and that they were“lying.” It was the confirmed

death of six Egyptians and a se-ries of illegal activities that con-vinced me to try to unravel thedetails.

In September 2009, six Egyp-tians died in a collapsed shaft ex-cavated under a house in Nazlatel-Samman, a village abuttingthe Giza Plateau. The house andshaft were alongside the wallerected around the pyramids andSphinx to control access and stop looting.According to Egyptian newspapers, thetunnel had been a seven-month project, andat least 17 people were arrested.

The men “died while hunting for treasurewhen the floor beneath them collapsed ...rescue teams spent four days desperatelytrying to save the six Egyptians, who hadbeen trapped in a large hole … The rescuerseventually hauled them up as dead bodies.

The six people were allegedly fooled by acharlatan into believing that there was anantique treasure lying hidden beneath thehouse owned by one of them ... the six diedof asphyxia after they stayed for four days inthe hole they had dug to a depth of about 15metres … neighbours had heard screams asthe house collapsed and almost disappearedinto the hole shrouded in dust.” (http://

The Alleged ConspiracyBill Brown and Richard Gabriel (a pseu-

donym) link a series of events to the deathsof the six people. They claim that the Hall of Records was accessed; artifacts from Atlantiswere removed; and that various people arecovering up what was recovered. These accu-sations have been made on websites and inwidely circulated audio interviews. The infor-mation for this article comes from their web-site (www.richardgabriel.info), online inter-views, and emails.

According to Brown, at 2:a.m. on April 28, 2010, a Polifriend “put on a uniform” so thhe could enter the closed Garea and walk past the guards apolice who patrol the area. In t

Andrew Collins was asked to look into taffair, and he made an inquiry to John VAuken. John called Cairo and found that ttrucks were being used to prepare for t

According to Brown, he was the managerof a Polish university’s Egypt ground pene-trating radar (GPR) project. Brown adds thatin 2006 he “privately and secretly” con-

ducted GPR in Nazlat el-Samman, adjacentto the tunnel where the six Egyptians died.

The secret GPR is explained as an assessmentof the property for possible purchase. (He didnot buy the property.) He reported he “wasable to see a room about 8 by 8 feet with en-ergy sources at the room’s corners.” Insidehe “saw a wooden box about the size of abriefcase.” Inside the box were two foil-like“sheets of gold separated by a half-inch witha light-like energy, crystal, or plasma.” He“saw some type of writing on the goldsheets.” Brown states that a cylinder was re-moved which unnamed “experts” werecalling “a generator.” This device is the al-

leged “Atlantean technology” artifact. Dis-cussing Brown’s findings, Gabriel said adja-cent “rooms were filled with treasures, goldand statues.” How Brown “saw” the box andwriting was explained when Brown said thathe actually “saw” these “in his mind.” Ac-cording to Brown, since then he had been“playing cat and mouse with authority whiletrying to obtain access to sensitive areas...”

Brown claims someone stole his “GPRdata” in Chicago around June 2009, threemonths prior to the deaths. In online inter-views, he repeatedly suggests there was aconnection between the stolen data and theillegal dig where the six Egyptians died. In a

ike athletes, chess championsappear to lose some ability withage. At the age of 54, in 1985,Viktor Korchnoi, known as

“Viktor The Terrible,” may have beenpast his prime years, when he was a

four-time champion of the Soviet Unionand a five-time winner of the EuropeanChampionship. However, he was stillhighly regarded in the chess world. Moreover, his opponent, Géza Maróczy, was much older—so old in fact that hehad died at age 81 in 1951, 34 years be-fore their historic game began.

The Korchnoi versus Maróczy chessgame, which began in 1985 and endedin 1993, lasting 7 years and 8 months, iswithout a doubt one of the most intri-guing cases ever in the annals of psy-chical research. It was reported by Dr.Wolfgang Eisenbeiss and Dieter Hassler

in the April 2006 issue of the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research.

“This case appears to be one of the mostremarkable cases supporting evidence forsurvival of an intelligent component of human existence after bodily death,” opinesDr. Vernon M. Neppe, director of the PacificNeuropsychiatric Institute in Seattle, WA andprofessor in the department of neurology andpsychiatry at St. Louis University in Mis-souri, himself a chess champion at a moremodest level than Korchnoi and Maróczy, who were ranked 13th and 29th, respectively,all-time in a 1978 study.

The match was arranged by Eisenbeiss, aSwiss stockbroker and a doctor of economicswith a long-standing interest in psychical re-search. Knowing that Eisenbeiss had consid-erable experience in studying mediums, adentist named Waldhorn suggested to Eisen-beiss that he attempt to arrange a chess gamebetween a living person and a deceasedperson. Intrigued by the idea, Eisenbeiss per-suaded Korchnoi, who had defected from theSoviet Union and was living in Switzerland,to take part in the experiment. He then askedRobert Rollans, a long-time acquaintance andan automatic-writing trance medium whowas living in Germany, to participate.

particularly good candidate as he did notknow how to play chess and was willing toparticipate without remuneration. Moreover,he had complete confidence in Rollans’ in-tegrity.

Eisenbeiss gave Rollans a list of deceasedgrandmasters and requested that he have hiscontrol spirits named Tata and Gabriel, saidto be late relatives of Rollans, attempt to lo-cate one of the grandmasters in the spirit

world and have him agree to such a match.( The “control” is a spirit who acts as an in-termediary in the spirit world, much like themedium does in the material world. In ef-fect, there are usually four parties—thesitter or person receiving messages on thisside, the human medium, the control, andthe communicating spirit. The control usu-ally relays messages from the spirit commu-nicator and in automatic writing controlsthe medium’s body, especially the writingarm. Occasionally, however, a spirit com-municator can operate the medium’s arm

Born in Romania in 1914, Rollans was amusician and composer. He discovered his

automatic-writing ability at age 33 whenearly one morning, as he started to write aletter, he sensed a force take control of hishand. “Don’t be afraid, it’s me, your brotherRobi,” his hand wrote. Robi, a young physi-cian, had died eight years earlier. Neverhaving heard of automatic writing, Rollansdidn’t know what to make of it, but eventu-ally figured it out and developed his gift. Ac-cording to Eisenbeiss, Rollans would enterinto a semi-trance and was unaware of whathis hand was writing. After he came out of the trance state, he was ignorant of what hehad just written.

Eisenbeiss concluded that Rollans was a

gime, made their exit fromBucharest by helicopter.

The Ceaucescu contingentwas captured later in theday by the opposition. Ceau-cescu and his wife were exe-cuted by an army firingsquad on Christmas Day.

The National Salvation Front (FrontulSalvarii Nationale) established a new interimgovernment. In the final days of the Roma-nian Revolution, sides in the fighting werenot always clear as various factions vied forpower. Orders were ambivalent, contradic-tory, and convoluted as chains of commandbroke down and loyalties shifted. Militarycontingents at times ended up fighting oneanother somewhat indiscriminately. The vio-lence and chaos in Bucharest and elsewherein Romania did not finally end until aroundDecember 27.

Parapsychological WarfareWith my colleague Oana R. Ghiocel (a

Romanian by birth who lived through theDecember 1989 events), I have been studyingthe 1989 Romanian Revolution from the per-spective of the psychical sciences. A numberof high-ranking military officers have spokenout publicly, making the case that Romaniawas a testing ground for unconventionalwarfare carried out using any techniquesavailable, including psychic manipulation bydomestic and foreign interests opposed tothe Ceaucescu regime.

omania is a land of unparallelednatural beauty and deep religioussentiments, combined with contin-uing mystery and intrigue. Vam-

pires, Dracula (perhaps based on the real lifefifteenth century ruler Vlad Tepes of Transyl-vania), witchcraft, black magic, and all thingsparanormal come to the mind at the meremention of Romania—and with good reason, for the country has a long and continuingtradition of occult manifestations.

Recently (August 2010) I traveled to Ro-mania and explored its mysteries firsthand.

There are too many things of interest to re-late in one article; here I will focus on somerecent political events that are intertwinedwith serious allegations of psychic manipula-tion. First: A little background.

Just over twenty years ago, during themonth of December 1989, the government of Nicolae Ceaucescu, the iron-fisted commu-

nist president of Romania, collapsed. Opposi-tion to the regime had been growing foryears. When protests over the government’sattempts to evict a dissident priest broke outin Timisoara (a major city in the west of Ro-mania) on December 16, the anticommunistsentiments quickly grew, with crowds gath-ering, protests spreading, and riots ensuing.

The army was sent in but failed to establishorder and active fighting escalated.

On the morning of December 22, Ceau-cescu and his wife Elena (who was alsoDeputy Prime Minister of Romania), alongwith a few high ranking members of his re-

R Teodor Filip was a key mili-

tary commander during theRomanian Revolution, holdinga number of important posts. He was Chief Commander of the USLA (Unitatea Specialade Lupta Antiterorista [Special

Unit for Anti-Terrorist Protection); he was incharge of security for President Ceaucescu;and he headed security operations at the Bu-charest Otopeni International Airport (sincerenamed the Henri Coanda International Air-port), the Parliament House, and other crit-ical areas. In his book Razboiul Parapsiho-logic Împotriva României [ TheParapsychological War Against Romania]Filip writes (translated into English by OanaGhiocel):

“. . . the moments of the beginning of theRomanian Revolution from December 1989,as well as the events that preceded it, raise

many questions and doubts. Many of theseevents were marked by deeds that make onethink of the premeditated action of a ‘film di-rector’ from outside the masses of those re-volting. Some elements make one realizethat during the Romanian Revolution, against Romania took place a true parapsy-chological war, where all unconventionalweapons of psychological, psychotronic, andpsychic warfare were widely used.” (Parapsy-chology here refers to the study of anoma-lous mental phenomena, such as mindreading or mind-over-matter, and other psy-

These meta-analyses show results that arefar beyond what might be expected bychance; and, though the effects may be smallin some cases, they are sometimes as mucheight times larger than the effects reportedin other mainstream studies that have beentouted to be medical breakthroughs. Thiskind of research challenges the scientificcommunity and is often strongly resisted. The reasons seem obvious. Acceptance of this research may require a redefining of ourculture’s predominant models of mind, con-sciousness, and healing. The conventionalmodel assumes that consciousness, and itseffects, is localized in the physical body andin the present. The new analyses indicatethat consciousness may be able to affectphysical organisms at a distance. Science hasshown that you can help your loved one toheal if you pray for him.

Larry Dossey, who has compiled somemeta-analysis on this subject, noted some in-teresting trends in the research. Thestrength of the affects of the DI seems tocompare with the intensity of the thoughts, feelings, and intentions of the personsending intention. Intentional healing abili-

ties seem to be widespread in the humanpopulation, and some studies seem to showthat advanced meditators and healers pro-duce larger effects. A healing outcome canoccur at different distances, from hands helddirectly over the body to DI practitionersbeing in different rooms. People with agreater need for healing seem to be moresusceptible to the prayers of others. Effectscan occur without the knowledge of the re-ceiver and, interestingly, the effects can beblocked by the receiver if desired.

Another interesting area of research has concerned the socalled “Maharishi Effect.” Since

the early 1970’s, practitioners of Transcendental Meditation (TM)have been putting their calmingthoughts and intentions to use.In many large US cities, studiesusing TM have observed statisti-cally measurable reductions incrime when as little as one per-cent of the city’s population isengaged in some form of medita-tive practice. In some studies, the quality of life in the population was measured using in-cidence of fires, traffic accidents, seriouscrime, and stock market fluctuations. A di-rect relationship between the number of par-

ticipants and the various measures of thequality of life was shown. When the numberof people praying was reduced, the incidenceof serious crime, fires, and accidents in-creased.

These studies seem to indicate how theinward practice of calming your mind canhave a positive effect on the world around you. Gregg Braden, in  The Isaiah Effect, claims that early sages and prophets sug-gested that one tenth of one percent of hu-manity could shift the consciousness of the world. There is a Hopi prophecy that recom-mends prayer for changing the course of  world events, saying when prayer and medi-

n its broadest terms, prayer refers toany kind of communication with aHigher Power, the Absolute, or God. Formillennia, humans have been making

requests to a higher entity in the form of gifts, actions, or verbal supplication. Prayeris still alive and well in the world today in itsmany different and fascinating forms. Peoplebelieve in it, use it, and sometimes rely on itfor guidance and healing. Perhaps you knowsomeone who has gone to an energy healerand come away feeling better? Or you mighthave heard of a person who has receivedprayers from a church group. Are these prac-tices a carry-over from more primitive timesor only ‘wishful thinking’ as the materialisticparadigm we live in tells us? Let’s take a lookat some of the current science and researchinto prayer and also look at prayer’s history, diversity, and implications.

Since the 1950’s, researchers have beenattempting to study and understand reportsof the power of prayer and “psychic” healing.Like parapsychology, the methodologies de- veloped for studying prayer have become

quite rigorous, ruling out most of the knowncausal, physical, or even psychological expla-nations for healing.

Some current scientific research refers toprayer as “Distant Intentionality” (DI) inorder to avoid religious connotations and toemphasize the purposeful, mental aspect of prayer. The following modalities of healingfall under the umbrella of DI: A) Intercessoryprayer—making a request for a desired out-come; B) Non-directed prayer—requestingonly the will of a higher power; C) Energyhealing—covering many different practi-tioners who use subtle energies to heal; D)shamanic healing—a complex set of prac-

tices where a practitioner uses altered states, metaphysical realms, and spirits to en-courage healing; E) Therapeutic Touch—aspecific practice using a meditative focus andintention; and F) Spiritual healing—refers toa wide range of techniques including spirits, mediums, seances, trances, and channeling, often within some religious context.

Researchers have been able to show indouble-blind, scientifically controlled studiesthat mental intentions can have effects upondistant biological systems. These effects havebeen explored in many varied applications.College students and healers have affectedthe growth of fungus, yeast, or bacteria

growing in cultures. Healers have influencedthe growth of cancer tumors in animals orthe animals recovery from anesthesia. Thereare many studies showing how mental intentcan influence humans: to speed their re-covery from surgery, to increase or decreasethe production of certain cells, or slow theprogression of certain diseases, such as ad- vanced AIDS.

Researchers have also conducted rigorous‘meta-analyses’ of these kinds of studies. These analyses look at the overall results of all the research to see if the results can bereplicated and if there is enough statisticalpower to make the studies scientifically valid.

I

• BY PATRICK MARSOLEK  tation are used rather than relying on newinventions to create more imbalance, hu-manity will find the true path. “The Maha-rishi Effect” studies confirm these older be-liefs and suggest the critical number of those with healing intentions may be even smaller.

The TM studies bring up another inter-esting phenomenon of prayer. The language we use may have power in itself. TM is ameditative practice that uses mantras, en-ergy-based sounds that when spoken withrepetition are believed to transform thepsyche of the individual, and sometimes theindividual’s body, too. Mantras are usuallysimple one- or two-syllable words but canalso be a longer phrase. It is believed that when you invoke a mantra, you are accessingall the stored history of that word. You are inessence piggybacking on the work of all theindividuals who have intoned that mantraover the thousands of years they’ve been inuse. OM (or AUM) is one such word. OM isbelieved to be the sound of the universe inSanskrit. It is believed that invoking it is toalign your consciousness with the under-lying unity frequency of everything and tohelp remove the illusion of separation. Many

thousands use this word in their prayer andmeditation every day. One interesting qualityof mantras is that it doesn’t seem to matter if  you know what energy your mantra evokes, you can still experience its benefits.

Sanskrit is an ancient language whosesounds are thought to be derived from theactual sounds of the universe. In other words, the sound of the word used is thoughtto be connected with the essence of whateveris being described. This belief differs from

English or modern languages which are based on a physical andlogical connection to what isbeing described. When one in-

vokes the name of a deity in San-skrit, it is thought that the powerof the deity joins you through thesound frequencies of the name. If, for instance, you call or sing toGanesha, the elephant-headedgod in India who is thought to bethe remover of obstacles, you willactually experience more open-ness and success. In the same

way, each mantra or prayer said in Sanskritis thought to physically affect change.

Devotional chanting is believed to havesimilar qualities. When you repetitiously

sing a song in one of these ancient lan-guages, you may experience a shift in yourconsciousness. We have seen the negative ef-fects of this kind of consciousness shift insome forms of mass hysteria, when peopleare “pulled in” to the consciousness of agroup intent for violence. Group chantingcan create a mass ‘hypnosis’ that can affectpositive changes. Also, with mantras andchants, you have the added benefit of repeti-tion, which can help to shift you into atrance state. In a trance, the conscious mindis quieter, more relaxed, which allows for a

n his dialogues, Plato said very clearlythat Atlantis was in the Atlantic (hencethe similarity in names) beyond the Pil-lars of Hercules and described the Medi-

terranean as a relatively small, closed-inbody of water. But that hasn’t prevented agreat many writers and researchers frompostulating that it was located almost any- where except where Plato said it was. Peoplehave suggested that it was actually in the far

northern Atlantic, or the Sahara Desert. A more reasonable suggestion is that thelegend actually refers to the Americas, and this may becorrect, or at least a part of the Atlantean empire mayhave been located there; butit is worth pointing out thatPlato described Atlantis asan island and wrote of the“opposite continent,” whichseems to be a reference tothe Americas, located be- yond the island.

Some writers of a moreskeptical bent, like A.G. Ga-lanopoulos, have gone sofar as to claim that Atlantis was located, not to the west, but in the Mediterraneanand that the ruins of Akro-tiri on the island of Santorini were what re-mained. The island of Santorini, or Thera, was the location of an outpost of the Minoanculture, a civilization contemporary withand familiar to the Egyptians, who had sup-posedly told the story to Solon, who passed iton to Plato. It seems unlikely that they couldconfuse a nation with whom they traded with a civilization that died in prehistoric

times. Galanopoulos claimed that the “Pil-lars of Hercules” actually referred to tworocks on the coast of Attica, but this seems very, very unlikely; the Greeks of Plato’stime at least knew about the Atlantic and, infact, referred to the Straits of Gibraltar asthe Pillars of Hercules. Plato said that At-lantis sank beneath the ocean, but Akrotiri was destroyed by a super massive eruption of Thera—the entire island is a volcano. Theeruption and a tsunami it spawned severelydamaged the main Minoan center on Crete,

but their culture lasted for some time afterthat. They were finally conquered by the My-cenaean Greeks.

Perhaps the strangestexplanation for Atlantis isthat considered by GrahamHancock and by Rand andRose Flem-Ath, that Atlantis was located in Antarcticaduring a time when most orall of that continent was icefree and at least relativelytemperate. There is a rathercomplex story behind this.

A researcher namedCharles Hapgood, amongothers, popularized a daringand innovative hypothesis:he suggested, partly on thebasis of old maps, thatEarth’s crust at times

slipped as much as thirty degrees within afew years and that this was actually thereason for ice ages. His idea, which also in-terested Albert Einstein, was based on thebuildup of massive ice sheets in the polar re-gions. Hapgood suggested that the weight of the ice destabilized the crust causing it toslide over the mantle in an attempt to redis-tribute the weight nearer the equator, car-

ried there by the angular momentum of ouspinning planet. Some of the problems withis are obvious. Ice weighs less than liqu water and far less than most kinds of roc Why should this destabilize our planet? Hagood, in his later years, concluded that, fact, the weight of the ice would have beeinsufficient but, unwilling to abandon htheory, postulated an unknown force capabof shifting the crust.

One of the maps consulted by Hapgoo was the Piri Reis map of 1513, named after

Turkish admiral and discovered 11/29/192in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. In Maps the Ancient Sea Kings, Hapgood suggestthat it may have been based on one of Clumbus’ maps, and Columbus certainly hmaps purporting to show land to the west Europe. He was either a member of, or close associate, of the mysterious Knights Christ, who appear to have been the KnighTemplar, their name changed to avoid thpersecution suffered by their comrades France. The Templars had a large fleet, anmany believe that they possessed ancieknowledge, possibly found beneath Soomon’s Temple. The Piri Reis map showSpain and North Africa fairly accurately anpart of the Brazilian coast, with fairly accrate longitude—remarkable in a time befothe invention of the chronometer. Enthsiasts have claimed that it also shows thcoast of Antarctica fairly precisely, but this  very, very unlikely. The map actually showthe coast of Patagonia curving east, with nbreak between it and “Antarctica.” Aside frothe fact that early geographers believed the probability of a huge southern continecalled “Terra Australis” to balance the lanmasses in the Northern Hemisphere,
