Of course, the deeper problems, whichthe hemorrhaging oil has seemed to repre-sent, appear likely to remain for a while. Those of a more metaphysical turn of mindhave not failed to notice the obvious sym-

He pursued his kidnapped sweetheartEurydice into Hell and brought her back.Where is Orpheus, when you need him? Itwill be interesting to see if any modern herohas what it takes to rescue our lost purity;and if it is given back to us, will we be able tokeep it? Orpheus could not.

eligious persecution, over allegedheresy, remains one of the great threats

to world peace—to say nothing of freedomand enlightenment—yet the internationalpress often seems more interested in polit-ical correctness than in the systematicmurder of small groups whose unpopularviews have made them targets. Just as theNazis murdered jews while much of theworld looked the other way, the same bloodypractices still flourish today in many parts ofthe world.

In January of 2008, Atlantis Rising re-ported on “The Plight of the Yezidi” (A.R.#67) an obscure Sufi sect in Iraq on theverge of physical extinction through fre-quent masacres by majority Muslims. Wehave also written about the difficulties facingTibetan Buddhists, as well as the Chinesegovernment’s repressive moves against theFulang Gang sect. Genocide in the Darfurprovince of Sudan has also been widely re-ported elsewhere, but scant attention hasbeen paid to the situation in Pakistan where,in May, 90 members of the AhmadiyyaMuslim sect were slaughtered by the localmuslim majority in two mosques. The issue, ostensibly, was blasphemy.

The beliefs found so offensive includedthe Ahmadiyya teaching that Jesus survivedthe crucifixion and traveled to Kashmirwhere he ultimately died, and whose remainsare said to be in the tomb of Yuz Asouph inSrinagar, the Kashmiri capitol. In his recent

movie, Jesus in India, filmmaker Paul Davids,at considerable personal risk, documentedthe tomb’s purported site (see A.R. #74).

“It is simply beyond belief,” Davids toldAtlantis Rising, “but sadly true, that peoplein Pakistan are being slaughtered for relig-ious beliefs that don’t conform to main-stream Islam, and that there are [criminal]laws against so-called ‘blasphemy’.”

According to Wikipedia, “Ahmadis (fol-lowers of the Ahmadiyya religious move-ment) have been subject to various forms ofpersecution and discrimination since themovement’s inception in 1889. The Ahma-diyya faith emerged from the Sunni traditionof Islam, and its adherents believe in all thefive pillars and articles of faith required ofMuslims. The Ahmadis are active translatorsof the Qur’an and proselytizers for the faith;converts to Islam in many parts of the worldfirst discovered Islam through the Ahmadis. However, in many Islamic countries, the Ah-madis have been defined as heretics and non-Muslim and subjected to persecution andoften systematic oppression.”

Throughout Earth’s long, bloody past, nothing has caused the shedding of more in-nocent blood than religious intolerance. It isa problem which remains today, very far fromsolution.

n May 2010 Dr. Lora Little, filmakerStan Praciak, Kimberly Prachniak, and Ispent over a week in the Bimini area. Our primary purpose for this trip was

relaxation and a vacation, but several dayswere highlighted by excursions to several keylocations around Bimini (up to 10-milesaway) where we were shown several newlyfound underwater spots by Eslie Brown. Wealso took the time to visit several places onland, such as the Fountain of Youth, whichwe had oddly never seen while there. We alsotook a close look at a plane we believe haddisappeared into the Bermuda Triangle andhad been featured on a National Geographicshow. In addition, we examined the extensiveand impressive wreck of a DC-6 found under-water to the east of Bimini.

Here are some of the key things wefilmed, and examined at various locations:

The “Rectangles”On the one day we had in the area with

little or no winds (the day we arrived), Loraand I took our boat to the deep area calledthe “Rectangles,” which is a widespread areaof uniformly arranged square and rectan-gular formations lying on the bottom at 100feet. The coral encrusted stone formationsare found on a mile-long swath about 200-feet wide. They were first identified by ar-chaeologist Bill Donato in 2006 who foundthem using side-scan sonar. The side-scansonar images of these look very similar to thefew sonar images that have been releasedfrom the famous “Cuba” site some years ago.Our one dive at the rectangles, conductedwith the History Channel over a year ago,was necessarily brief but pointed to these oddstone piles as probably being man-made.These formations, generally 10 by 45 feet or

In Atlantis Rising, Issue #77, archaeolo-gists Drs. Greg and Lora Little reported ontheir recent discoveries in the Bahamas nearBimini which provide powerful evidence forthe existence of ancient civilization in thearea when it was above water as long as10,000 years ago, a time when some believeAtlantis existed. The Little discoveries weresubsequently documented on the HistoryChannel. Weather has been a problem inmuch of the exploration, but in spring of thisyear, they returned to the area to further ex-amine some of the previously investigatedsites and others. This time weather cooper-ated. Here is their followup report and someof the pictures.—Editor.

About 10 miles to the south and west of Bimini a limestone ridge rises from a deeperbottom where it reaches about 20-feet below the water surface. In several areas of

this ridge are cut and polished slabs of granite. Some of these slabs, generally 5 feetlong, by 2 feet wide, and 6 to 10-inches thick seem to be scattered. Eslie Brown, whois holding a drop video camera next to the slab, gives a good indication of the size of

these slabs.

ne of the most controversial relicsever, the Turin Shroud, is said to bethe burial cloth of Jesus. For some,it is the ultimate relic, proving the

reality of his resurrection. For academics, itremains an enigma, since the image em-bedded on the cloth has never been fully re-produced. For others, it is nothing morethan a medieval fake, for which a 1988carbon-dating result provides the only evi-dence. And yet, recent research has indicatedthat the swatches taken for dating the shroudcame from sections which had been rewoveninto the original material as part of a med-ieval repair campaign, implying that the dateof the original shroud material remains to bedetermined.

The Shroud, therefore, acts very muchlike a mirror: if you believe in Christ and theResurrection, you are more likely to believeit is genuine. If you are an atheist, you willlikely adhere to the official conclusion thatit’s a medieval fake. As for the official posi-tion of the Church: there is none. IndividualChristians are left to believe or not. There is,of course, also a scientific position to con-sider, but, alas, it turns out that the “scien-tific position” is not very scientific. It relieson the 1988 carbon-dating, which placed theshroud’s origins between 1260 and 1390, butone very important problem remains: there

Ois no conclusive evidence that the materialsubmitted for carbon-dating originates fromthe actual shroud. Indeed, mysteriously, forthe key part of the sample taking process—in which pieces of the shroud were placed incontainers to be sent out for analysis—theVatican, for unknown reasons, demandedthat the video cameras, set up to record theentire process—this key sequence in partic-ular—be turned off.

If this were a forensic investigation for anactual trial, the carbon-dating results wouldbe inadmissible in court. That would meanwe would have to rely on other evidence, most, if not all, of which suggests that theshroud is much older than the fourteenthcentury. It is known, for example, that thereis pollen present which shows the Shroudwas once in Palestine. We know the weavingtechnique is contemporary with Jesus. Andwe know there is genuine blood on theshroud, blood group AB, rare in Europe, butcommon in the Middle East. Moreover, theposition of the hands is consistent with acrucifixion. There are many other examples, and some scientists now argue the carbon-dating—being the odd-one out—should betreated with skepticism. Few, though, dareto point the finger of suspicion directly tothe Vatican, instead arguing that other prob-lems with the tests might have occurred.

The story of the Shroud has inspireddozens of books and documentaries, most of

which treat it in isolation. What is littleknown, but completely true, is that theshroud has a little brother: the Oviedo su-darium, which has been residing in Spain formore than a millennium.

The Oviedo Shroud or sudarium is abloodstained sweat cloth, believed to havebeen wrapped around the head of Jesus afterhis death—as mentioned in the Gospel ofJohn. Unlike the Turin Shroud, it does notshow an image, merely blood marks and thelike. Interest in the Oviedo sudarium cameabout when Mgr. Ricci visited Oviedo in 1965.He was, in fact, the first to suggest that therewas a correspondence between the stains onthe cloth of Oviedo and those found on theShroud’s facial area. It would take anothertwo decades before a local organization couldbe formed to begin a series of scientific teststo determine the veracity of the Gospels.

The Oviedo Shroud was meant to be usedonly for a short period. The linen is composedof taffeta ligaments with the threads twistedin the form of a Z, which is the simplest formof weaving. It is fairly coarse, inexpensivecloth, unlike the Turin Shroud, which wouldhave been intended to remain about the deadperson’s body for a year or so, after which thebones would have been collected for place-ment in an ossuary. Unlike the Turin Shroud, the sudarium has no image; it is stained only

amazing messages, but the stones cannot speak for themselves. Thisbook speaks for them.

In November 2008, I accompanied Mr. Dunn and others to whatsome have called “the Lost Pyramid” at Abu Roash, some ten kilome-ters northwest of Giza. I was anxious to see the rose-colored granitepiece that the author had described to me years before, and was an-ticipating seeing the compound radial cuts and distinguishing tool-marks. I was not disappointed. To any technophile, this one cut stonechallenges the arguments made for primitive tools and primitive peo-ples. More than any other artifact, it embodies an ancient “language”that still speaks to modern engineers. I immediately dubbed it “TheRose Red Rosetta Stone of Abu Roash.”

I called the stone a “Rosetta” because its discovery reminded meof another paradigm-changing artifact: in 1799, Napoleon’s soldiersfound a curious object embedded in a wall of an Egyptian village.Their original report, “A Report on a Stone Found in the Village ofRosetta,” describes a black rock slab inscribed with three languages, one of them being ancient Greek, the others the unknown Egyptianhieroglyphic writing and the cursive or “demotic” Egyptian writing.Reading the Greek portion, the antiquarian Champollion was able totranslate the names of the Pharaohs—written within cartouches—and thence the rest of the hieroglyphic writing itself. He opened upan eventual understanding of the millions of carved figures deco-rating the ancient temples and tombs of the Nile. Nobody would everagain look at the hieroglyphic carvings as mere magical, mystical fig-ures but would read the translations of experts who deciphered thosecuts and reliefs, uncovering the lost history of Egypt.

The Rosetta stone thus facilitated a change in the worldview ofmoderns who looked back at ancient Egyptians. Nothing would everbe the same. I maintain that this book has accomplished a similarfeat, every bit as meaningful to an understanding of ancient Egypt, ifnot more so. Once understood, Dunn’s discoveries will foreverchange the perception of the serious researcher.

In a similar manner to Champollion’s reading ancient Greek andcomparing it to the unknown hieroglyphic figures, researcher Chris-topher Dunn was able to “read” the machine-cut tool marks on theAbu Roash stone and compare them to those made by modern toolscapable of the same operations. With years of experience and a

hat researcher Christopher Dunn has accomplished in hisnew book Lost Technologies of Ancient Egypt (Inner Tra-ditions/Bear, 2010) and in his previous work, The GizaPower Plant, is more than a paradigm shift; it is more of a

paradigm seismic event. Because once a person with a manufacturingor machining background—engineer, technician, machinist, ar-tisan—reads and understands what Dunn has discovered and ana-lyzed in ancient Egyptian stonework, that person will never look atancient Egyptians the same way ever again. That reader will becomeskeptical of portrayals of ancient Egyptians as primitives in any sense. That reader will begin to analyze every new Egyptian archaeologicaldiscovery, to see what else conventional Egyptologists have over-looked. That reader will become part of the new paradigm.

In these pages, Chris Dunn demonstrates an underlying system ofincredible precision in the machining, layout, and positioning of bothindividual objects and groups of features, ranging from the toolmarkdetails in the “Rose Red Rosetta Stone of Abu Roash” to the symme-tries of the giant heads of Ramses at the temples in Luxor, to thelayout of the column capitals of the Great Hypostyle Hall at Den-derah, to the base of the Great Pyramid itself. Thanks to this work, the modern reader sits back in awe and admiration of the Egyptiangeniuses of five thousand years ago. The ancient artifacts contain

coveries. For instance, his supposed electriccar that derives it’s power by means of wire-less, his discovery of cosmic rays that travelat speeds in excess of 50 times the speed oflight, a cosmic ray machine that derives anunlimited amount of power from the atmos-phere, a 300-page paper on his bladeless tur-bine that no one has been able to locate, more information about his top-secret par-ticle beam weapon, and the full implicationsof his very-well-hidden dynamic theory ofgravity.

The writing of the Tesla biography, which took 14 years of daily work, involvedtravel to every known major Tesla archivefrom New York and Massachusetts, to Wash-ington DC; Berkeley California to BelgradeSerbia; attendance and participation as a lec-turer at a dozen or more international Teslaconferences held in Colorado Springs; at thesite of his Wardenclyffe tower on Long Is-land, New York; Croatia; Serbia; Tempe, Ari-zona; Toronto, Canada; and Niagara Fallscovering the years 1984-2009. And in allthat time, having attended all those confer-ences, and in meeting all the world’s greatTesla experts, no one, as far as I knew, hadtruly understood Tesla’s dynamic theory ofgravity, nor its implications.

It has only been in the last four years, since the writing of Transcending the Speedof Light, that I have come to fully appreciateTesla’s theory. My source starts with a single

t was in 1976 while I was in the midst offollowing another story at the New YorkPublic Library when I found Tesla’sname for the first time. It was alleged,

in a book on avatars, that Tesla had beenborn on another planet. He had landed in themountains of Yugoslavia in 1856 to give ushumans the induction motor, fluorescentand neon lights, wireless communication, re-mote control, robotics, and our entire elec-trical power system. What immediatelystruck me was that had this man done allthis, surely I would have heard his name be-fore, but I had not.

I then read the O’Neill biography on Teslaand got his book of patents. From this mate-rial I was able to ascertain that Tesla indeedwas the real McCoy, that is, the fundamentalinventor behind all these high-tech crea-tions! He thus became the subject of my doc-toral dissertation. I wanted to find out howsuch an important individual could havebeen dropped from the history books, andthis work was morphed into the biographyWizard: The Life & Times of Nikola Tesla, abook now in its fourteenth printing, trans-lated into four languages with over 70,000copies in print. Tesla is no longer an obscureindividual.

However, what has remained obscure aresome of his still esoteric inventions and dis-

Istatement Tesla made to the well-known NewYork reporter, Joseph Alsop, at the age of 78,when the inventor was “led to the inesca-pable conclusion that such bodies as the Sunare taking on mass much more rapidly thanthey are dissipating it by the dissipation ofenergy in heat and light” (“Beam to Kill at200 miles, Tesla claims,” Joseph Alsop, NewYork Times, July 11, 1934). Even though I in-cluded this quote in Wizard, (p. 424), I didnot fully understand what Tesla was trying tosay. It took nearly another decade to figure itout.

At first, it seems absurd that a body as hotas the Sun would be absorbing more energythan it was radiating, and the only reason Ioriginally gave it any credence was becauseTesla said it. However, the more I thoughtabout it, the more it becomes obvious. Ofcourse stars are absorbing more energy thanthey are radiating. Otherwise, they wouldburn out in rather rapid fashion.

I hadn’t yet, however, linked this state-ment to the idea of “gravity,” or more to thepoint, to Tesla’s never-revealed dynamictheory of gravity.

The next hint had to do with Tesla’s criti-cisms of Einstein’s theory of relativity, whichhe published in a series of articles in themid-1930’s. Tesla’s main criticism had to dowith Einstein’s idea of the curvature of space:

ne of the most enigmatic (and theo-logically challenging) tales in theBible is related in the first verses inChapter 6 of Genesis—the tale of

the Nefilim, sons of the gods who (in thedays before the Deluge “and thereafter too”)took “daughters of man” as wives and had he-roic children by them.

Some eighty years ago a schoolboy, fortu-nate to study the Bible in its original He-brew, was reprimanded for asking why, though Nefilim meant ‘Those Who Had De-scended’ (from heaven, to Earth), translatorsrender the word as ‘giants.’ The schoolboywas me, and the unfair reprimand led me tostudy ancient myths, trace their origins toMan’s first known civilization in Sumer andto write The 12th Planet and subsequentbooks comprising the ‘Ancient Astronauts’scenario: The Nefilim, also called Anakim inthe Bible, were the Sumerian Anunnaki—“Those who to Earth came from theheavens”—and more specifically, from Ni-biru, a far out planet in our own solarsystem.

They were the ancient gods whose feats, detailed in Sumerian texts inscribed on claytablets, were recalled in the Genesis tales ofAdam and Eve, the Garden of Eden, and theeventual intermarriages. It all made sense (atleast to me); it explained enigmas rangingfrom biology to astronomy; it was supportedby countless pictorial depictions on objectscalled cylinder seals. But could one prove it?

At that same time some eighty years ago,the famed British archaeologist LeonardWoolley, excavating in Iraq in the sacred pre-cinct of Ur—the Sumerian city whereAbraham’s journey to Canaan and mon-otheism began—unearthed a group of unu-sual tombs. They were, and remain, extraor-dinary in their construction and layout, astounding in the incredible wealth andcraftsmanship of the artifacts found therein(even the most common utensils were madeof gold) and above all unique in the “inhuma-tion” of scores of attendants (seventy three injust one tomb!) who were buried alive along-side the deceased VIP’s—a practice unknownat any time then, before, or thereafter.

Who were the VIP’s so buried—in thethird millenium B.C.—in what has sincebeen known as the Royal Tombs of Ur? Var-ious inscriptions linked them to the First Dy-nasty of Ur. Two of the VIP’s were identifiedby their inscribed cylinder seals as a femalecalled Nin.Puabi and a male Mes.kalam.dug.Their skeletal remains were taken to London,x-rayed and examined for their anthropolog-ical peculiarities, listed as remains of a‘queen’ and a ‘prince’ from Sumer—and for-gotten.

But now, eighty years later, the two oc-currences have come full circle and in com-bination, provide the elusive evidence for analien presence on Earth in the ancient past.

Having partaken from the Tree of Knowl-edge, the Earthlings are expelled and deniedaccess to the Tree of Life.

What was it, genetically, that the gods’deliberately held back from us? What genesthat grant longevity, ward off cancer?

With the revolutionary scientific ad-vances of genomics, such genetic differencescould be ascertained were we able to get holdof an Anunnaki god, or a demigod, to docomparison genome sequencing.

And that, I reveal in my latest book ThereWere Giants Upon the Earth, might now bepossible—because Mes.kalem.dug was ademigod and Nin.Puabi was not a ‘queen’—she was a NIN, a goddess. Being a female, her Mitochondrial DNA that comes throughthe female line was 100% Niburian.

With her lineage established, I ap-

That after thirty-five years since The 12thPlanet the Biblical Data Cycle and the Scien-tific Discovery Cycle, like two combinationwheels in a safe, will click into the OpeningSpot at Chapter 6 of Genesis was neither fore-seen not premeditated by me; but it was per-haps predetermined and inevitable by thevery nature of the subject: human origins.

Looking back, one now realizes that atevery stage the tales of our creation (brief inthe Bible, quite detailed in the Sumeriantexts) are reports of DNA, genomics, and ge-netic engineering: The “seed of life” (DNA) istransmitted from Nibiru to Earth during acelestial collision; Man is fashioned by the El-ohim/Anunnaki by adding some of theirgenes to those of a primitive hominid to at-tain a Homo sapiens; the infertile hybrid isgiven the ability to procreate by another ge-netic manipulation (the “Garden of Eden” ep-isode); and then the cycle is completed by themating of gods and Earthlings, bringingabout the prized achievement, the demigods.

It is with the demigods that that chain ofgenetic mixing assumes a personal interest toall of us. The clues are brought into focus inthe epic tale of Gilgamesh, the most famousof all known demigods, who was king in thecity of Uruk circa 2650 B.C. His father wasthe demigod Lugalbanda; but because hismother was the goddess Ninsun, he was morethan a demigod—he was “two thirds of himdivine.” That, he believed, entitled him to thelongevity (alias “immortality”) of the gods. But his search, he was forewarned, would befutile because, in the words of the GilgameshEpic:

When the gods created ManWide understanding they perfected for him;

Wisdom they had given him;To him they had given Knowledge—

Everlasting life they had not given him

Come to think of it, that is exactly thelesson of the biblical Garden of Eden tale:

proached the Natural History Museum inLondon. They confirmed the existence of theskeletal remains, but turned down my sug-gestion that they conduct the comparison ge-nome sequencing. After two years of prod-ding, the publication of There Were Giantshas led the Museum to mitigate their abso-lute “No” to “we might consider it” if a quali-fied genomics institute will undertake theproject.

I have approached some of the leadingscientists in this field, offering to fund a“Goddess of Ur Genome Project.” So it nowremains to be seen whether Science will riseto the challenge of possibly proving that—asZecharia Sitchin has claimed all along ThereWere Extraterrestrials Upon the Earth.

hen Zecharia Sitchin first wrotehis books, The 12th Planet and itssequels, only specialists could read

the Sumerian language, but now anyonecan check his translations by utilizing the2006 book Sumerian Lexicon, and Mi-chael S. Heiser, a scholar of ancient lan-guages, has found many deviations inSitchin's translations.

Sitchin’s “planetary collision” viewdoes superficially resemble a theorywhich is seriously entertained by modernastronomers—the giant impact theory ofthe Moon’s formation about 4.5 billionyears ago by a body impacting with thenewly-formed Earth. However, Sitchin’sproposed series of rogue planetary colli-sions differ in both details and timing. Aswith Immanuel Velikovsky’s earlierWorlds in Collision thesis, Sitchin claimsto have found evidence of ancient humanknowledge of rogue celestial motions in avariety of mythological accounts. In Veli-kovsky’s case, these interplanetary colli-sions were supposed to have taken placewithin the span of human existence, whereas for Sitchin these occurred duringthe early stages of planetary formation, but entered the mythological accountpassed down via the alien race which pur-portedly evolved on Nibiru after these en-counters.

While Sitchin’s scenario for the crea-tion of the Solar System is hard to recon-cile with the Earth’s current small orbitaleccentricity of only 0.0167, Sitchin’s sup-porters maintain that it would explainmuch of Earth’s peculiar early geographydue to cleaving from the celestial colli-sion, i.e., solid continents on one side anda giant ocean on the other.

The scenario outlined by Sitchin, withNibiru returning to the inner solar systemregularly every 3,600 years, implies anorbit with a semi-major axis of 235 Astro-nomical Units, extending from the as-

teroid belt to twelve times farther beyondthe sun than Pluto. “Elementary perturba-tion theory indicates that, under the mostfavorable circumstances of avoiding closeencounters with other planets, no bodywith such an eccentric orbit would keepthe same period for two consecutive pas-sages. Within twelve orbits the objectwould be either ejected or converted to ashort period object. Thus, the failed searchfor a trans-Plutonian planet by T.C. VanFlandern, then with the U.S. Naval Obser-vatory, which Sitchin uses to bolster histhesis, is no support at all.”

Sitchin claims that “from an equalstart, the Nefilim evolved on Nibiru 45million years ahead of comparable devel-opment on Earth with its decidedly morefavorable environment.” Such an outcomeis unlikely, to say the least, since Nibiru

The age of our specieshas been pushed backuntil many conven-tional archaeologistsand anthropologistsnow admit to a date of275,000 BP Seafaring,it was once believed,is a fairly recent inno-vation. But Polyne-sians with no metaltools sailed for thou-sands of miles acrossthe Pacific; Australiaand New Guinea weresettled at least 50,000BP; and now evensome professional ar-chaeologists are spec-ulating that NorthAmerica’s ClovisPoints, dating back tothe last ice age, mayhave been broughtacross the Atlantic byseafaring people from what is now France. And, incredibly, hand axes of the type madeby homo erectus, a supposedly primitive an-cestor or relative of homo sapiens, have beenfound on Crete and dated back to at least130,000 BP There was no way to get to Creteexcept by sea.

early times. Townshave been found on

the continental shelfof India and dated, due to the depth oftheir submergence,to at least 9,000 BP

They had stone build-ings and left a great

many stone tools, rather than metal (al-though metals might

not survive thou-sands of years in cor-rosive sea water). Go-bekli Tepe, in what is

now Turkey, is thesite of large struc-

tures of carved andcut stone built over

11,000 BP by a peoplewho left no evidenceof metal or ceramics

or agriculture andwho appear to have

been hunter-gatherers rather than farmers. This is contrary to everything we thought weknew. Archaeologists are finding the ruins ofa widespread culture in the Amazon Basinwhich seems to have made little or no use ofmetal and had no stone buildings (there isvery little stone available in the region) yetthey built immense earthworks and canals

• BY WILLIAM B. STOECKERould we recognize the ruins of aforgotten indigenous human civ-ilization or the evidence of an ad-vanced technology here on Earth

if we found it? Can we even define “civiliza-tion”? Suppose a technology was not likeours, on the same line of development andperhaps less advanced than ours or more ad-vanced, but on a completely different path?Suppose machines were made of stone ratherthan metal and designed to harness the chi,or kundalini force (it has many names) thevery existence of which is denied by mostmainstream physicists?

Conventional archaeologists and histo-rians long assumed that the first civilizationsbegan between 5,000 and 6,000 years BP (be-fore the present) in the Fertile Crescent. They assumed that several elements appearedtogether and that the presence of all, or atleast most, of these are what defines civiliza-tion. These elements are agriculture, wovenfabrics, metal tools, and weapons, fired ce-ramics, and large buildings of brick and/orcut stone. It is believed that the developmentof writing and, hence, the dawn of recordedhistory followed shortly after.

The walled city of Jericho dates back to10,000 BP; agriculture is now generally be-lieved to be at least 12,000 years old; andwoven fabrics and fired ceramics have beenaround for about 28,000 years…or longer.
