MEDIA INFORMATION ROAD WARRIORSCatawba has only four home games at Shuford Stadium this season and play its first three games away from home before the home opener on September 27. The Indians last played a season with only four home games in 2004 and were able to advance to the NCAA II Playoffs after a 7-3 regular season. The last time Catawba started the season with three straight road games was in 1990. The Indians lost to VMI, beat Wingate then fell to Mars Hill.

SERIES REVIVALSCatawba renews football matchups with a pair of teams in 2014. Catawba is facing Davidson for the first time since 1987. The Indians first played the Wildcats in their very first season of gridiron competition in 1907. Catawba and Western Carolina have not met since the 1969 campaign which was the last of 28 meetings between the schools.

SIXTH IN PRESEASONComing off of its 6-5 season a year ago, Catawba was picked sixth in the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Coaches’ Preseason Poll. The Indians garnered 21 points in the poll. Catawba finished in a tie for fourth in the standings last year with Wingate at 3-4 in the SAC.Carson-Newman, who Catawba hosts in its home opener, was the top team in the poll. The Eagles edged out defending champion Lenoir-Rhyne by a single point. Newberry, Wingate and Mars Hill fill in the middle part of the poll, while Catawba is picked ahead of Tusculum and Brevard.

FOUR NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-SAC TEAMSCatawba put four players on the All-South Atlantic Conference Preseason Football Teams. Three of those, Taylor Fender, Jonathan Jean and Jason Taylor, were first team picks. Cary Littlejohn earned second team honors.Fender, an offensive lineman, has started 33 games entering his senior season. He played two years at right guard before starting the season last year at left guard. He was the center for the second half of the 2013 year.Jean, a junior nose guard, had 39 tackles last year. Of those tackles, five went for losses, including a pair of sacks. Jean was a Hansen third-team all-region pick.Taylor, a senior linebacker, posted a team-high 105 tackles a year ago. He was also a third-team all-region Hansen selection. Taylor had 10 stops for losses, with two sacks, and forced a fumble.Littlejohn, a junior running back, led the Indians with 574 yards rushing last year. He carried the ball for a high of 146 yards against Brevard.

CURTIS WALKERHead Coach

Curtis Walker became the Head Football Coach at Catawba in December of 2012. He returned to his alma mater after spending one season as the defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at Western Carolina University. Prior to his year in Cullowhee, Walker spent 10 years as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Coastal Carolina University. During Walker’s 10 seasons in Conway, the Chanticleers had four players on the defensive side garner All-America accolades, while players within his defense earned a combined

44 All-Big South accolades as the Chanticleers captured three straight Big South Conference titles (2004-06). Coastal also won the league championship in 2010. Under Walker, Coastal led the league in pass defense in 2006, ‘07 and `08. On the strength of 18 interceptions in `07, the Chanticleers ranked sixth nationally in turnover margin (1.36). In 2006, Coastal’s defense tied for the national lead with 19 interceptions. Walker’s defense led the nation in pass efficiency defense and contributed to the top turnover margin in the country, setting a Big South record at plus 22. Coastal twice led the nation in interceptions, getting 19 in 2006 and 27 in 2004. Walker was a four-year starter and three-time All-American linebacker for Catawba in 1989-92, graduating in 1992 with a degree in sociology. He was inducted into the Catawba Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and into the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame in 2008. Walker was Catawba’s team most valuable player in 1991 and served as team captain in 1992. Walker still holds the Catawba single game record for tackles with 25 stops against Wofford in 1991. He also still owns the all-time single season record for fumble recoveries with six, also set in 1991. Walker earned All-America honors his final three seasons, including first team accolades as a senior in 1992. Following graduation from Catawba and a two-year coaching period at Salisbury High School, Walker joined the staff at Catawba in 1995. He coached the linebackers and began coordinating all recruiting in 1997. Walker was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2001 and the Indians were ranked first in Division II in scoring defense and 15th in total defense. At Catawba, Walker was a part of three South Atlantic Conference championships (1996, 2000 and 2001) and three NCAA playoff appearances (1999, 2000 and 2001). The Indians were a combined 22-3 in 2000-01, a lot of the success due to a suffocating defense. Catawba allowed just 13.5 points per game during those 25 games. A native of Burlington, NC, Walker was a two-time football all-conference performer at Graham High School, prior to graduating in 1988. He was the Mid-State Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1987. Walker and his wife, Sheka, have two sons; Jalon (9) and Curtis II (7).

OFFENSE: The offensive line unit was touted after paving the way for 297 yards rushing minues two sacks and two kneeldowns for a 6.2 yard per carry average. DEFENSE: Freshman linebacker Kyle Kitchens (Decatur, GA/Decatur HS), who was in on seven tackels and forced a fumble on a sack. SPECIAL TEAMS: Senior running back Trey Mashore (Woodleaf, NC/W. CATAWBA’s LAST GAME: Catawba quarterback Mike Sheehan accounted for five touchdowns, three rushing and two passing, as the Catawba Indians claimed a 42-37 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Indians improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2- in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 0-8 and 0-5. Brevard pulled within 42-37 with just under six minutes remaining on a three-year run by Jordan Ollis. That drive was kept alive by a roughing the kicker penalty on Catawba and was followed by a 51-yard pass from Kevin Herbst to Zac Queen. Catawba took the ensuing kickoff and marched to the Brevard 13 before missing on a field goal with 1:37 remaining. Brevard had one last chance, but the Catawba defense forced three incompletions and a one yard run on the final Tornado drive. David Burgess and Trey Mashore each posted career highs in rushing going over 100 yards for the first time in their careers. Burgess collected 94 of his 137 yards in the second half, while Mashore totaled 101 of his 120 yards in the opening 30 minutes. Sheehan was perfect in the air, completing 13-of-13 passes for 157 yards. Ollis led Brevard with 125 yards on the ground. Kelvin Jeter added 92. The Tornados went just 2-of-7 passing for 97 yards. Catawba scored on its first two possessions with Sheehan keeping from a yard out to cap both 10-play drives. Brevard answered on an 11-yard run by Jeter and a 46-yard pass from Tanner Wright to Queen. Burgess put the Indians back on top with a 53-yard scoring pass from Sheehan at the 9:48 mark of the second quarter. The Tornados came right back on a 12-play, 66-yard drive to tie the score at 21-all with three minutes left. Catawba retook the lead in the final minute of the half on a 13-yard catch by Tyler Hamilton with just 25 seconds left before the break. Brevard cut the margin to 28-24 on a field goal by Alex Naboa midway through the third quarter, but Catawba came used another 10-play drive that Burgess capped with a one-yard run to go up 35-24. Wright scored from a yard out for Brevard with 10:14 left to make the margin 35-31 with 10:14 remaining. After the Brevard score, Catawba got a big 52-yard kickoff return from Mashore that set up the third Sheehan rushing touchdown, again from a yard out, to lead 42-31 with 8:02 left. Catawba looked to have the game in hand, forcing a Brevard punt with just over six minutes to play, but the penalty allowed the Tornados to trim the lead to five with 5:41 left on Ollis’ short run. Freshman Michael Peppers led the Catawba defense with 14 tackles, including one for a loss. Freshman Kyle Kitchens forced a fumble on a sack among his seven stops. Michael Gruber posted 15 tackles and two for losses for Brevard.

OFFENSE ROLLS UP NEAR 500 YARDS AT DAVIDSON Catawba amassed nearly 500 yards of total offense in its opening win at Davidson. Of the 484 yards, 305 came on the ground. That was the first time Catawba had ran for over 300 yards since a 362-yard performace against Lenoir-Rhyne in 2008.

SHEEHAN NEAR PERFECT IN THE AIR Sophomore quarterback Mike Sheehan missed on just one pass against Davidson, completing 12-of-13 attempts. The lone misfire went to Gary Williams, who couldn’t get a foot down in bounds resulting in the incompletion.

INTERCEPTION RETURN SWINGS MOMENTUM Sophomore linebacker Jamal Lackey turned in one of the biggest plays of the game at Davidson as he intercepted a pass and returned it 67 yard for the game’s first score. It was the second pick returned for a TD for Catawba in the last three games, dating back to Trey Evans against North Greenville last year, which sparked the comeback win over the Crusaders.

WILLIAMS HAS BIG DAY IN CULLOWHEE Junior Gary Williams had a career day at Western Carolina, catching seven passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Williams has returned to receiver after playing as a corner back last year as a sophomore.

DEFENSE DOMINATE IN SECOND QUARTER AT WCU Western Carolina used two big plays to score a pair of first-quarter touchdowns against Catawba, but other than that the defense was up to the test against the Catamounts. In the second quarter, the Indians allowed a total of just 27 yards and two first downs.

SHEEHAN DOUBLES UP Sophomore quarterback Mike Sheehan was once again named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after the win over Newberry. It marked the second time in three games this season that Sheehan earned the honor. He was also the league Player of the Week after the opening win over Davidson.

TAYLOR NABS SAC HONOR Senior linebacker Jason Taylor was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Week following his 16-tackle performance in the win at Newberry. It equaled a career-high for Taylor, who also made 16 tackles last year at Carson-Newman. Taylor has posted double-digit tackles in nine games over his career.

OPENING SAC WIN Catawba picked up a win in its SAC opener for the first time since 2010 when the Indians topped Wingate 35-28. The Indians have faced Newberry in its league opener the past three seasons.

LITTLEJOHN ECLIPSES 100 Junior running back Cary Littlejohn became the first back to reach the 100-yard plateau in a game this season. Littlejohn ran for 117 in the win at Newberry. The junior had one 100-yard game last season which came at Brevard when he went for 146 yards.

WALKER GETS FIRST OVERTIME WIN The overtime win over Newberry was the first time Catawba has went to extra periods under Curtis Walker. The win snapped a string of three stright overtimes losses dating back to 2005 which started with a double-overtime loss to Newberry. Catawba is now 4-6 all-time in overtime games.

OFFENSE MAKES HISTORY Catawba’s offense piled up over 500 yards of offense in consective weeks for the first time in school history. The Indians totaled 506 yards against Carson-Newman and came back with 563 yards in the win over Tusculum. Catawba managed those yards in different ways. Agaisnt Carson-Newman, the Indians did most of the damage in the air with 387 yards. In the Tusculum win, Catawba picked up 383 yards on the ground.

BIG DAY ON THE GROUND VERSUS PIONEERS Littlejohn wasn’t the only Indians to have a big day on the ground against Tusculum. Mike Sheehan, David Burgess and Eamon Smart all put up career high numbers. Sheehan ran for 102 yards, while Burgess had 79 and Smart 81. All four had touchdown runs.

DEFENSE GETS REST With the Catawba offense churning up yards on the ground it kept possession of the ball for over 40 minutes of the contest. The final tally was a possession time of 41:43, including holding the ball for 23:28 of the 30 minutes in the second half. Catawba ran 91 offensive plays to 60 for Tusculum and in the second half the Indians ran 47 plays to only 24 for the Pioneers.

SECOND QUARTER OUTBURST Catawba put up four TDs in the second quarter of the win over Tusculum, its most p[oints in a single quarter of the season. The last time the Indians scored 28 poitns in a single quarter came against Newberry in 2012, also in the second quarter. The second quarter has been the most productive quarter of the season this far as Catawba has outscored its opponents 110-65 in those 15 minutes.

DEFENSE LIMITING DAMAGE Catawba has coughed up the ball 17 times on offense this season with nine interceptions and eight fumbles, but the defense has done its best to limit the damage. Only five of those turnovers have been turned into points with both Western Carolina and Wingate getting a pair of TDs.

McDANIEL STARTS PEMBROKE GAME WITH PICK-SIX Junior cornerback Mark McDaniel made it three consecutive games win an interception with his pick against UNC Pembroke on Saturday. McDaniel wasted little time as he turned his interception on the game’s second snap into a 28-yard touchdown.

SHEEHAN DRIVES THE OFFENSE Quartback Mike Sheehan accounted for over 80% of the Catawba offense at UNC Pembroke. The sophomore threw for 186 yards and ran for another 80 yards, totaling 266 yards. Catawba finished with 318 yards as a team. Sheehan leads the SAC in most quarterback categories, including total offense.

TARRATS TURNS IN BIG PLAYS Wide receiver Carlos Tarrats has produced the most plays of 20 yards or more for the Indians this season. The sophomore has 10 big-play catches, incuding two in the win over UNC Pembroke. Seven of his 10 catches have been for more than 30 yards. he also posted a 20-yard run against Brevard.

BURGESS AND MASHORE ENJOY CAREER DAYS ON THE GROUND Sophomore David Burgess and senior Trey Mashore run for career-high yardage in the win over Brevard. Burgess did his damage in the second half with 94 of his 137 yards, while Mashore ran for 101 of his 120 yards in the opening 30 minutes. It was the second time this season Catawba ahd two 100-yard rushers in the same game.

FIVE FOR SHEEHAN Quarterback Mike Sheehan accounted for five touchdowns in the win over Brevard. The sophomore ran for three one-yard scores and threw for two touchdowns. Both his TD passes came in the second quarter, a 53-yarder to David Burgess and a 13-yarder to Tyler Hamilton in the final seconds of the first half. Sheehan has run for eight touchdowns and thrown for 14 this season.

LITTLEJOHN AND BURGESS NEARING 1,000 Catawba has two running backs nearing 1,000 career rushing yards. Cary Littlejohn is just 72 yards shy of reaching the 1,000-yard plateau, while Burgess needs 126. TWO SET TO CLIMB RECEIVING LIST Senior Tyler Hamilton and sophomore Carlos Tarrats are nearing the top 20 in career receptions. Both have 77 in their career and are five shy of moving into the 20th spot. Fifteen players in school history have caught 80 passes in a career with 15 reaching 100 receptions.

TOP TACKLER Senior Jason Taylor has become the seventh Catawba player to record 300 career tackles. He led the team last season with 105 tackles. If Taylor can post 60 tackles by seasons end he will pass his current coach, Curtis Walker, who made 359 career stops.

FAMILIAR FACES Catawba’s offensive line returns intact from a year ago. The slated starting five features senior center Taylor Fender, junior left tackle Lewis McCormick, junior left guard Tim Buck, sophomore right guard TJ Olsen and sophomore right tackle Brandon Floyd. Fender has been a starter for all 33 games over his previous three seasons. He made 22 starts at right guard in his first two years then after making a few starts at left guard last season he moved to center. McCormack has 22 starts at left tackle the last two years. Buck made eight starts in 2012 at right tackle before starting at center, then left guard in his 11 starts last year. Olsen and Floyd both started seven games last year. Olsen saw a couple of starts at right tackle before moving to right guard, while Floyd had all of his starts at right tackle.

SALISBURY, NC — Catawba scored a pair of touchdowns in the final six minutes to rally for a 38-31 win over visiting Mars Hill. The teams had matched scores int he first half before settling into a defensive strugle in the final 30 minutes The Indians trailed 31-24 and were backed up on their own 10 with just over eight minutes remaining. Three passes from Danny O’Brien moved the Indians out to the 31 then Lorenzo Pooler broke off a 58-yard run to the Mars Hill 11. Two plays later O’Brien connected with Carlos Tarrats for a 10-yard score to pull Catawba even at 31-all with 5:56 left. On the ensuing kickoff, Tory Mitchell’s pooch kick landed at the Mars Hill 30 and spun into the arms of Indian Gary Williams to give the ball right back to Catawba. The Indians kept it on the ground and O’Brien gave Catawba the lead with 2:42 remaining on a four-yard run on third down. Mars Hill threw four incomplete passes on its next possession and Catawba was able to run out the clock. Mars Hill had snapped a 24-24 halftime tie with the only points of the third-quarter. Those points came on a three-yard pass from Trent Miller to Jamel Hall at the 4:35 mark of the quarter. The teams matched scores in the first half. Catawba went on top on a 38-yard pass from O’Brien to Bruce Smith before the Lions came right back on a one-yard run from Miller. O’Brien put Catawba back ahead on a five-yard pass to Nate Charest, but Mars Hill got a 18-yard pass from Miller to Dimitri Holmes to make it 14-14. Cary Littlejohn accounted for 37 yards with four carries on Catawba’s next scoring drive which covered 59 yards and was capped by the freshman’s two-yard run. Mars Hill cut its deficit to 21-17 on a 44-yard field goal from Victor Yurco, but Chad Hollandsworth got those points back for Catawba with a 24-yard field goal with just 1:35 left in the half. Mars Hill was able to get the tying touchdown before the break as Miller threw a a 10-yard pass to Cameron Shuford. Catawba totaled nearly 500 yards in offense, outgaining the Lions 494 to 345. 2014 GAME RECAPS

DAVIDSON — Catawba knocked off host Davidson 35-7 to win its football opener at Richardson Field. Mike Sheehan completed all but one pass, totaling 174 yards with three touchdowns. Davidson looked to have some momentum early. The Wildcats drove deep into Catawba territory on their first possession, but were stopped on downs. Davidson was set up again by an Indian fumble at midfield only to see the game turn when Jamal Lackey intercepted a second-down pass and raced 67 yards for the game’s first score. Sheehan threw touchdown passes on Catawba’s next two possessions. The first went to freshman Keyon West, who made a diving catch in the end zone to complete the 30-yard score. Sheehan’s second scoring strike went to Carlos Tarrats on a fourth-down play that covered 31 yards. Catawba fumbled deep in Davidson territory on its next drive, but Terence Williams intercepted a Wildcat pass to get the offense back on the field. Sheehan drove the unit down the field once again and capped the 69-yard drive with a 22-yard pass to Tyler Hamilton. Catawba led 28-0 at the half and outgained Davidson 330 to 102 in the opening 30 minutes. The Indians capped their scoring early in the second half. Sheehan delivered a 40-yard pass to Cary Littlejohn to jump-start the drive. David Burgess followed with runs of 27 and eight yards to put the points on the board. Davidson averted the shutout midway through the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by David Rogers. Sheehan went 12-of-13 through the air for 174 yards and the three scores. He also added another 56 yards on the ground. The Indians gained 305 yards rushing with Trey Mashore leading the way with 78 yards on eight carries. In addition to his interception, Lackey also posted three tackles for losses to lead the defense. Jason Taylor had two stops for losses among his six tackles on the night. J.P. CULLOWHEE — Western Carolina pulled away in the second half and posted a 35-17 win over visiting Catawba at Waters Field. WCU quarterback Troy Mitchell threw for two touchdowns ran for a third to lead the Catamounts. Mitchell went 16-of-27 through the air for 223 yards and his two scores. He ran for 17 yards and a key score that gave WCU a 21-10 lead midway through the third quarter. Darius Ramsey led the Catamount ground game with 56 yards on 11 carries. Mike Sheehan threw a pair of TD passes for the Indians, but was also intercepted twice. He went 21-of-36 passing for 236 yards. Gary Williams was the favorite target, grabbing a career-high seven passes for 94 yards. The Catamounts went up 14-0 in the opening quarter, using a pair of long touchdown passes from Mitchell. The first covered 44 yards to Spearman Robinson just five minutes into the contest. Mitchell later found Willie Police for a 56-yard score at the 3:04 mark of the quarter. Catawba rebounded after the early deficit and outplayed the Catamounts in the second quarter. The Indian defense limited WCU to just 79 yards outside of the two long scoring plays. Early in the second quarter, Catawba cut its deficit in half as Williams made a diving catch on a throw from Sheehan that covered 20 yards and made it 14-7. The Indians appeared to be marching for more points at the end of the half, but after a catch and run inside the WCU five, Tyler Hamilton fumbled and the Catamounts ran out the final minute of the clock. The Indians closed the gap to 14-10 on its first possession of the second half as Chad Hollandsworth converted a 39-yard field goal. WCU responded from there, scoring touchdowns on three of its next four possessions. Mitchell ran in from 19 yards to make it 21-10 at the 7:58 mark of the third quarter. Newsome added a pair of touchdown runs early in the fourth quarter, the second after a Catawba fumble in its in red zone, to make it 35-10 with 10:40 remaining. Sheehan guided Catawba to one final score, hitting Carlos Tarrats from six yards out with 7:47 to play. Trey Mashore helped set up the score with a catch and run of 33 yards. NEWBERRY — Mike Sheehan threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Carlos Tarrats, lifting Catawba to a 37-34 double overtime win over host Newberry in both teams’ South Atlantic Conference football opener. The final pass marked the second time on the night that Sheehan and Tarrats hooked up for a score and came after the Indians held Newberry to a field goal on its offensive possession. Both teams scored a touchdown in the first overtime. David Burgess scored on a 1-yard run for Catawba and W.T. Murden threw a touchdown pass to Jalen Cook for Newberry. Sheehan completed 15-of-26 passes for 241 yards and the two touchdowns, both to Tarrats. He also ran for a score. Tarrats totaled four catches on the night for 67 yards. Cary Littlejohn topped the 100-yard mark with 117 yards on 11 carries. Murden had four touchdown passes for Newberry, completing 26-of39 passes for 321 yards. Byron Dickerson made five catches for 95 yards and two scores. Catawba had a chance to win at the end of regulation in a frantic final few minutes. SALISBURY — Catawba rolled up over 500 yards of total offense, but came up two points short of an upset of 19th-ranked Carson-Newman, falling 35-33. De’Andre Thomas was the highlight for Carson-Newman. He ran for 104 yards, threw for 173 yards and accounted for five touchdowns. Thomas ran for four Eagle scores then put C-N up 35-26 with just over six minutes to play on a 30-yard pass to TraShaun Ward. Catawba quarterback Mike Sheehan threw for a career-best 387 yards and two scores. He completed 30-of-45 passes without an interception. Carlos Tarrats caught six of the passes, including a touchdown, and totaled 147 yards receiving. Tarrats has a TD catch in all four games for the Indians this season. Carson-Newman jumped out quickly, scoring on its first two drives, as Thomas capped 14 and seven play drives with runs of three and 14 yards. Catawba nearly cut the score in half late in the quarter, but Tarrats was deemed to have fumbled an inch from the goal line which rolled out of the end zone for a touchback. The Catawba defense came up with a big play after the turnover, causing a C-N fumble at midfield. Tarrats got his touchdown on this possession as he caught a 23-yard pass from Sheehan. Thomas and the Eagles came right back with the junior plunging in from the one midway through the second quarter. Sheehan capped Catawba’s next drive with his own one-yard run to make it 21-14 and the Indians had a chance to get closer before the half, but missed on a 35-yard field goal attempt. Chad Hollandsworth did connect on a 34-yard field goal to start the second half to pull the Indians within 21-17. Thomas followed with his final scoring run, taking it in from five-yards out for a 28-17 edge. Another field goal from Hollandsworth, this one from 43 yards, made it 28-20 with 2:39 to go in the third quarter. Catawba held the Eagles and Cary Littlejohn ran in from the seven to make it 28-26 with 12:18 to go. Catawba went for the tie, but Tyler Hamilton was just on the end line to nullify the points. SALISBURY — Catawba piled up over 500 yards of total offense for the second straight week en route to a 51-21 South Atlantic Conference win over visiting Tusculum. Catawba rolled up a season-high 383 yards on the ground with both Cary Littlejohn and quarterback Mike Sheehan going over 100 yards. Littlejohn led the way with 104 yards that included a 61-yard touchdown run that made the score 21-0 early in the second quarter. Sheehan ran for 102 yards and one score while throwing for 180 yards and another touchdown. On a windy afternoon, Tusculum took the opening possession with the wind and quickly marched inside the Catawba 10. Mark McDaniel ended the drive with an interception on the goal line. The junior would also cause two fumbles on the day in addition to a tackle for loss. Catawba took the lead for good on its second possession. Sheehan helped set up the score on a 36-yard run on a draw play then later threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to David Burgess with 5:15 to go in the opening quarter. Burgess also ran for two scores, the first coming on the third play of the second quarter. Indian freshman Eamon Smart made it 28-0 midway through the second quarter on a 17-yard run. Tusculum got back into the game on the ensuing kickoff, getting a one-yard run from Fernando Smith after an 80-yard return from Ken Funnye. Tusculum caught a break on its kickoff as a high kick into the wind hit the ground and spun backwards into the arms of Irim Aiken. Smith again scored from a yard out to cut the margin to 28-14. Catawba regained the momentum going into the half, marching 76 yards in 11 plays to lead 35-14 after a five-yard run by Sheehan. Each team scored in the third quarter. Burgess got his season scoring run at the 11:45 mark and Funnye caught a 47-yard pass from Malcolm Pendergrass with 1:44 remaining. WINGATE — After rolling up over 500 yards for the past two weeks, Catawba’s offense was limited to less than 300 yards, committed six turnovers and surrendered a pair of safeties in a frustrating 30-19 loss to Wingate. Mike Sheehan completed just 11-of-30 passes for 167 yards, was intercepted five times and sacked three times. His bright spot was a 57-yard scoring strike to Gary Williams that cut a deficit to 13-9 midway through the second quarter. Williams had three catches on the day for 71 yards. Catawba missed a field goal on its opening drive and Nestor Lantigua hit a 60-yard run on the first offensive play for the Bulldogs. That set up the first score, a seven-yard pass from Kyle Johnson to Jordan Berry. That duo would put more points on the scoreboard for Wingate after Catawba’s first interception of the game. Berry made the 15-yard grab to make it 13-3. Wingate answered Catawba’s score that cut the lead to 13-9 with a quick strike on Johnson’s 40-yard pass to Cameron Leviner. Mark McDaniel ended the next Wingate drive with an interception at the two-yard-line with 1:18 to go in third quarter, but the Bulldogs would shut down Catawba’s offense from there. The Indians spent the fourth quarter backed up to its own goal line with four drives starting inside their own 10. The biggest play was a third-down interception by Jon Jimenez at the Catawba 33 that turned into a Lantigua four-yard run, giving Wingate a 26-19 lead with 9:25 to play. A miscue on a snap led to the first Wingate safety with 6:08 remaining and Sheehan was called for intentional grounding in the end zone on the Tribe’s next possession to make it 30-19 with 3:56 to go. PEMBROKE,NC — Catawba overcame an early 14-6 deficit to top host UNC Pembroke 30-17 in Saturday afternoon at Johnson Stadium. The Catawba Indian defense held the Braves to just 250 yards as Catawba improves to 4-3. UNC Pembroke falls to 1-5. Mike Sheehan accounted for 266 yards of total offense with a touchdown rushing and passing. Sheehan went 16-of-24 through the air for 186 yards and ran for another 80 yards. Carlos Tarrats had four catches for 118 yards and a score. The Indians jumped on top quickly as Mark McDaniel intercepted a Reggie Pinner pass on the game’s second snap and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown less than a minute into the game. That was the lone bright spot for Catawba in the opening quarter as the Indian offense ran just three plays and totaled two yards between two UNCP touchdowns. John Rich caught a four-yard pass from Pinner to put UNCP on top at the 9:57 mark of the first quarter. Seth Owen connected with B.J. Bunn on the first play of the second quarter to give the Braves a 14-6 edge. A 45-yard pass from Sheehan to Tarrats set up Catawba’s first offensive score. Reid Carlton finished off the drive with a one-yard run. The Indians seized momentum with two scores in the final three minutes of the first half. SALISBURY — Catawba quarterback Mike Sheehan accounted for five touchdowns, three rushing and two passing, as the Catawba Indians claimed a 42-37 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Brevard pulled within 42-37 with just under six minutes remaining on a three-year run by Jordan Ollis. That drive was kept alive by a roughing the kicker penalty on Catawba and was followed by a 51-yard pass from Kevin Herbst to Zac Queen. Catawba took the ensuing kickoff and marched to the Brevard 13 before missing on a field goal with 1:37 remaining. Brevard had one last chance, but the Catawba defense forced three incompletions and a one yard run on the final Tornado drive. David Burgess and Trey Mashore each posted career highs in rushing going over 100 yards for the first time in their careers. Burgess collected 94 of his 137 yards in the second half, while Mashore totaled 101 of his 120 yards in the opening 30 minutes. Sheehan was perfect in the air, completing 13-of-13 passes for 157 yards. Ollis led Brevard with 125 yards on the ground. Kelvin Jeter added 92. The Tornados went just 2-of-7 passing for 97 yards. Catawba scored on its first two possessions with Sheehan keeping from a yard out to cap both 10-play drives. Brevard answered on an 11-yard run by Jeter and a 46-yard pass from Tanner Wright to Queen. Burgess put the Indians back on top with a 53-yard scoring pass from Sheehan at the 9:48 mark of the second quarter. The Tornados came right back on a 12-play, 66-yard drive to tie the score at 21-all with three minutes left. Catawba retook the lead in the final minute of the half on a 13-yard catch by Tyler Hamilton with just 25 seconds left before the break. Brevard cut the margin to 28-24 on a field goal by Alex Noboa midway through the third quarter, but Catawba came used another 10-play drive that Burgess capped with a one-yard run to go up 35-24. Wright scored from a yard out for Brevard with 10:14 left to make the margin 35-31 with 10:14 remaining. After the Brevard score, Catawba got a big 52-yard kickoff return from Mashore that set up the third Sheehan rushing touchdown, again from a yard out, to lead 42-31 with 8:02 left. Brevard closed within five, but the Indians held on to prevail. Freshman Michael Peppers led the Catawba defense with 14 tackles, including one for a loss. Freshman Kyle Kitchens forced a fumble on a sack among his seven stops. November 1, 2003 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#7 Catawba 27, #15 Tusculum 22 Catawba sealed the win on a halfback pass from Corey Ready to Brian Carter with less than a minute to play as the Indians held off Tusculum. The Pioneers had just 72 yards in the opening half, but scored twice early in the third quarter to pull even.

Nov. 8, 2003 - Burke-Tarr Stadium (Jefferson City,TN)#10 Carson-Newman 41, #6 Catawba 36 Luke Samples threw for a school-record 492 yards and nearly rallied Catawba from a 34-3 second-half deficit. C-N went up 41-22 with 9:02 remaining, but two strikes from Samples had the Tribe within 41-36 with 3:01 left, but the Eagles were able to run out the clock.

September 11, 2004 - Miller Stadium (Indiana,PA)#12 Catawba 52, #9 Indiana,PA 19 Catawba used four turnovers to rout IUP, rolling up 456 yards of offense. A 57-yard TD pass and a blocked punt for a score gave the Tribe a 28-12 lead at the break.

Oct. 30, 2004 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury, NC)#18 Carson-Newman 49, #22 Catawba 30 Catawba struck for 24 second-quarter points to erase a 12-0 deficit, but it was all Eagles in the final half. C-N totaled 629 yards to 455 for Catawba.

Oct. 27, 2005 - Burke-Tarr Stadium (Jefferson City,TN)#24 Carson-Newman 33, Catawba 21 The Eagles cashed in on four Tribe turnovers in the win. C-N built a 27-7 lead after three quarter and iced the game on a 60-yard interception return with 3:35 left.

October 7, 2006 - Setzler Field (Newberry,SC)#18 Newberry 21, Catawba 14 Catawba battled to the end, but came up short inside the Newberry 20 on the game’s final possession. A fourth-down pass from Brad Roach to Lance Johnson in the final quarter tied the game, but a short run by Alex Haynes gave Newberry the winning points with 1:49 remaining.

October 14, 2006 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)Catawba 24, #15 Carson-Newman 22 Brad Roach threw for 335 yards and three scores and Joe Brown stopped a two-point try with 6:42 left to give Catawba the win. Carson-Newman had just 64 yards in the opening half, but used two big runs and a 64-yard scoring pass to take a 16-10 lead in the third quarter.


♦CATAWBA vs. TOP 25Sept. 1, 2007 - Roebuck Stadium (Elizabeth City,NC)Catawba 34, #22 Elizabeth City State 7 Kory Fisher ran for 140 yards and Brad Roach accounted for three touchdowns in the win. Catawba used a pair of scores in the final three minutes of the first half to lead 20-7 at the break. ECSU had just 184 yards to 487 for Catawba.

Sept. 27, 2007 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#14 Catawba 45, #23 Mars Hill 21 In front of a record crowd of 5,514 and on national television, Catawba improved to 5-0 with the 45-21 win. Brad Roach com-pleted 17-of-23 passes for 249 yards and the Indians used three second quarter turnovers to build a 28-0 haltime lead. Arthur Cromartie made a key play as he intercepted a swing pass and returned it 66 yards for a score and a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Oct. 6, 2007 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#13 Catawba 28, #19 Newberry 18 Travis Landrum answered a Newberry field goal with a 90-yard kickoff return to give Catawba the lead for good at 14-10 midway through the third quarter. The Tribe added two more scores to go up 28-10 in the final minutes. Jasmon Carpenter ended Newberry hopes with an interception in the end zone and added a 93-yard return to set up the final Catawba score with four minutes to play.

Oct. 13, 2007 - Burke-Tarr Stadium (Jefferson City,TN)#12 Catawba 55, #7 Carson-Newman 49 In a game for the ages, Catawba rallied from a 35-13 deficit to steal its first win in Jefferson City since 1987. George Bell scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including the game-winner from a yard out with 26 seconds left. Brad Roach went 37-of-64 for 486 yards and four TDs, while Brent Johnson set a school record with 13 receptions totaling 172 yards. The teams combined for 1261 total yards, with Catawba having 651. The teams traded touchdowns after Catawba tied the score at 35-35 midway through the third quarter.

Nov. 24, 2007 - Bazemore-Hyder Stadium (Valdosta,GA)NCAA II Playoffs#8 Valdosta State 55, #12 Catawba 29 Valdosta used four Catawba turnovers and rallied from a 16-13 halftime deficit to end the Tribe’s season in the second round of the playoffs. The Blazers returned a fumble for a score on the game’s second play, but Catawba managed to grab a lead on first quarter scores by George Bell and Brandon Bunn, on a pass from Brad Roach. VSU went up 27-16 then capitalized on three straight Catawba miscues to grab a commanding 48-16 edge. Roach threw for 278 and three scores in his final game. Michael Terry ran for 139 yards as the Blazers went to the ground in the final half, totaling 210 of their 285 yards after the break.

Oct. 11, 2008 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#21 Carson-Newman 21, Catawba 14 Carson-Newman scored in the final minute on a 29-yard pass from Alex Good to Otis Miller with 44 seconds to play to rally for the win. The Eagles had tied the game at 14-all with 6:41 remaining. Catawba had moved into Eagle territory with just under five minutes to play, but fumbled. The Indians also had a desperation pass from midfield on the final play. Good ran for 129 yards and passed for 106, but C-N was held nearly 200 yards below their season average, outgaining Catawba 325 to 315. Jamelle Cuthbertson ran for 125 yards for the Indians and caught four passes for 61 yards. The Tribe lost for the first time in 38 games when scoring first.

Oct. 25, 2008 - Belk Stadium (Wingate,NC)#20 Wingate 34, Catawba 24 Wingate scored a pair of touchdowns eight seconds apart late in the first half to erase a 14-7 deficit which propelled the Bulldogs to the win. Catawba failed to convert a third down opportunity for the second time in three games and did not cause a turnover. Jamelle Cuthbertson scored on a pair of short touchdown runs to give the Indians a 14-7 lead after a quarter, but the senior was held to just 57 yards on the day, snapping his record tying streak of four-straight 100 yard games. JD Moore tossed three TD passes in a winning effort for Wingate.

Oct. 15, 2011 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#25 Mars Hill 31, Catawba 28 (OT) Mars Hill held Catawba on two downs at the one-yard-line to take the overtime win. Catawba had held the Lions to a field goal on the first possessoin of overtime after Mars Hill had converted a fourth-and-16 on its first series. Jonas Randolph ran for 331 yards to lead a Mars Hill offense that amassed 552 total yards. Jon Richt threw three touchodwn passes to help the Lions to an early 21-7 lead. Trey Mashore’s 100-yard kickoff return sparked Catawba to a 21-21 tie at the half.

Sept. 28, 2013 - Burke-Tarr Stadium (Jefferson City,TN)Catawba 25, #10 Carson-Newman 22 Catawba drove 88 yards for the go-ahead score in the final three minutes then partially-blocked a 33-yard field goal try by Carson-Newman in the dying seconds. Danny O’Brien threw for 444 yards and the winning score on a 34-yard pass to Carlos Tarrats with 56 seconds remaining. The Catawba defense had a big goalline stand in the first quarter and also held the Eagles to three field goals in trips to the red zone to keep the game low-scoring. Carson-Newman did not have a run over 11 yards in the game.

Oct. 19, 2013 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#10 UNC Pembroke 34, Catawba 31 Catawba came up just short in the upset bid. The Indians trailed 24-3 late in third quarter before Mark McDaniel returned an interception 33 yards for a score and Carlos Tarrats threw a 68-yard pass on a reverse to Nate Charest to get Catawba back in the game. The Indians got within three with just under four minutes left, but UNC Pembroke was able to run out the clock. An 81-yard TD pass by the Braves in the final minute of the opening half gave Pembroke a 17-3 lead at the half. Luke Charles threw for 336 yards and three scores. Charest made 10 catches for 153 yards for Catawba.

Nov. 16, 2013 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#14 Lenoir-Rhyne 48, Catawba 15 Lenoir-Rhyne rolled up 503 yards of total offense and pulled away from a 20-9 lead at the half. The Bears ran for 445 yards with Graham Duncan scoring twice. Teverrius Jones ran for a score and threw for a score. Catawba’s day was highlighted by Nate Charest, who set a new school mark for receptions in a season with 73. Carlos Tar-rats scored both Tribe touchdowns, catching a 74-yarder from Mike Sheehan and running for another.

Sept. 27, 2014 - Shuford Stadium (Salisbury,NC)#19 Carson-Newman 35, Catawba 33 Catawba outgained Carson-Newman 5-6 yards to 486 yards, but came up a couple points short of the upset. De’Andre Thomas ran for four touchdowns and threw one to lead the Eagles. Mike Sheehan threw for 387 yards for Catawba, while Carlos Tarrats made six catches for 147 yards and a TD. Carson-Newman jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quar-ter and never trailed. Catwba pulled within 28-26 early in the fourth quarter, but missed a two-point conversion try that would have tied the game. After the Indians cut the margin to 35-33, Carson-Newman ran out the final three minutes of the clock.
