HEAD COACH BRIAN KATZ GAME PREVIEW• Sacramento State will play its second game of the season when the Hornets host UC Davis in the annual rivalry game at the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento. This will mark the third straight year the teams have played at the Golden 1 Center.• The Hornets, who had a home game against Cal Poly last Friday canceled because of poor air quality from the Camp Fire, will enter the game with a 1-0 record. The team has not played since beating Simpson, 76-52, in the season opener on Nov. 9.• UC Davis is 1-4, and played two games in Arlington over the weekend.• The Hornets and Aggies will play each other for the 117th time in the long standing rivalry between the two teams. The two programs entered into an agreement that will see Sacramento State and UC Davis play one another four straight years at the Golden 1 Center. This is the third year of that four-year agreement.• Three of the last five meetings have been decided by six points or less.• Since becoming Sacramento State head coach in 2008, Brian Katz is 5-5 vs. UC Davis, and 3-4 against Jim Les coached Aggie squads.• The Aggies have won both meetings in the Golden 1 Center.• The 116 meetings between the two teams is the longest standing rivalry for Sacra-mento State against any opponent since the first season of Hornet hoops in 1948-49.• Overall, the Hornets have the better of UC Davis in a series which dates back to 1948 as Sacramento State is 66-50 all-time against the Aggies.• Tuesday’s game is officially a neutral site game, but Sacramento State will serve as the home team. UC Davis was listed as the home team in last year’s contest.• A win would allow the Hornets to start 2-0 for just the second time in the last five years - the 2015-16 team started with a 4-0 record.• Sacramento State played one exhibition game, and that came on Nov. 2 in a 103-55 home win over Bethesda. Seven different Hornets scored in double figures, including all five starters. No Hornet played more than 22 minutes.• The Hornets are coming off an injury plagued 2017-18 season in which the team finished 7-25 overall and 4-14 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets had won at least 13 games five consecutive seasons until the seven-win output a year ago. • The Hornets welcome back eight players and a redshirt from a year ago, including three starters. That includes six of the top eight scorers from last season.• Add in Marcus Graves, who is back after averaging 13.9 points in 2016-17, and Sacramento State should have lots of fire power this season. Graves missed all of last season after undergoing back surgery.• UC Davis has played a tough schedule thus far that has resulted in losses to San Francisco, San Diego, Arkansas and UT Arlington. Each of those losses came by at least nine points. The team’s win came in overtime (57-54) against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

SIMPSON GAME RECAP• Marcus Graves recorded the first triple-double in school history to lead Sacramento State to a 76-52 season-opening win over Simpson on Nov. 9 at the Nest.• Graves was one of four Hornets to score in double figures in a game Sacramento State led for nearly 39 minutes of game clock. The Hornets outscored Simpson in the first (36-25) and second (40-27) halves while holding big advantages in points in the paint (52-26), points off turnovers (29-8) and fast break points (18-6).• Sacramento State limited Simpson to 32% (19-60) shooting from the field and 14% (3-21) from the 3-point line. Conversely, the Hornets shot 47% (33-71) from the floor, and had 22 assists on the 33 made buckets.

2015 National Mid-Major COY2015 District 6 COY2015 Big Sky co-COY In his 11th season as the head men’s basketball coach at Sacra-mento State, Brian Katz has guid-ed the program to its most success at the Div. I level. That included a 2014-15 season in which the team set numerous school records after finishing 21-12 overall and

winning its first postseason game in 53 years. Katz became the 13th men’s basketball coach in program history when he was named to the position on April 10, 2008, and he is now the second longest tenured Hornet hoops coach. A graduate of Sacramento State and a native of Sacra-mento, Katz’s extensive basketball résumé includes a 42-year career as a basketball coach at the NCAA Div. I, junior college and high school levels. Under Katz, the Hornets defeated three Pac-12 Conference schools over a six-year span, which included road wins at Arizona State (2015), Utah (2012) and Oregon State (2009). The Hornets had gone 56 years without a win over a Pac-10/12 school prior to the 65-63 win at Oregon State. Sacramento State also won at least 13 games five straight years from 2012-17, the first time that happened in 43 years. In addition, the Hornets won Big Sky Tournament games three consecutive years (2015-17) for the first time ever. Moreover, the team has posted three conference records of .500 or better under Katz after the program had done so just twice in the 24 years prior to Katz taking over the head coaching duties. The Hornets have also established a homecourt advantage that has seen the program post a 58-25 combined record (.699 winning percentage) inside the Nest over the last six years. That includes at least 10 home wins in four of the last six seasons. Also, during that time, the team is 37-19 (.661) at home against conference competition. Not only has Katz’s teams performed on the hardwood, the program has excelled in the classroom where the Hornets have posted a team grade point average of better than 3.0 five times in the last nine semesters. That includes the team posting a 3.124 gpa during the spring of 2018. Prior to the start of the run of 3.0 term grade point averages in 2014, the men’s basketball program had never posted a 3.0 gpa dur-ing any semester in school history. Entering the fall of 2018, the team has an overall grade point average of 3.002, the second highest mark in school history. In addition, of the 34 Hornets that have expired their eligibility during Katz’s tenure, 33 have graduated. The winningest coach during Sacramento State’s Div. I era (1991-pres.), Katz was named by CollegeInsider.com as the 2015 National Mid-Major Coach of the Year after having already received District 6 Coach of the Year and Big Sky Conference co-Coach of the Year honors. He became the first men’s basketball coach in Sacramento State history to receive all three of those awards. The well-deserved accolades began to trickle in after Katz led the 2014-15 Hornet squad to a 21-12 overall record, a 13-5 mark in the Big Sky Confer-ence, the team’s first postseason appearance in the Div. I era (1991-pres.), and the team’s first postseason victory in 53 years. Prior to Sacramento State, Katz spent 19 years as a junior college head coach, compiling a 435-185 record (.702 win-ning percentage) while leading his teams to the playoffs 18 times, including three Sweet 16 appearances, three Elite 8 appearances and one trip to the Final Four.

GRAVES POSTS TRIPLE-DOUBLE IN FIRST GAME BACK• After missing all of last season with a back injury, fifth-year senior guard Marcus Graves made quite a splash in his first game back, posting the program’s first-ever triple-double in the season-opening victory over Simpson.• Graves underwent back surgery last year, and was playing in his first regular season game since March 9, 2017.• He finished with 12 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds, four steals and a game-high +23 in plus/minus ratio as no player in Sacramento State history (1948-pres.) had ever accom-plished the rare collegiate triple-double.• The team co-captain already had seven points, five assists, seven rebounds and two steals at halftime, and completed the feat with a 3-pointer at the 2:43 mark of the second half.• In 2016-17, as a junior, Graves averaged 13.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 0.9 steals while shooting .438 (163-372) from the field and .739 (99-134) from the line.• Among Big Sky leaders that season, he finished second in assists, third in assist-to-turnover ratio (+2.0), fifth in minutes (35.1 mpg) and 15th in scoring. In addition, the assists were the 34th best mark in the nation.• Graves has started 63 straight games in which he has appeared, including all 31 games during his sophomore season (2015-16) and all 31 games during his junior campaign.

NEW UNIFORMS IN 2017-18• Sacramento State is debuting brand new home white and road green uniforms.• The new white uniforms made their debut in the exhibition win over Bethesda and the regular season victory against Simpson.• There are also rumors that Sacramento State could debut a neutral black uniform set and at some point during the season. No Hornet men’s basketball team in school history (1948-pres.) has worn a black uniform.

PLAYERS RETURNING FROM INJURY• Sacramento State dealt with a ridiculous amount of injuries last season, punctuated by each of the team’s top four guards missing time because of the injury bug. Below is a list of the returners who are coming back from injury a year ago.• Senior guard Marcus Graves - underwent back surgery; missed all of last season.• Junior guard Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa - underwent back surgery during the off-season. Played in 30 games last year, but the injury severely limited him during the final four games (didn’t play in two, played 11 minutes in the other two).• Junior forward Chibueze Jacobs - dealt with a knee injury throughout a good portion of last season that limited him to 7.6 minutes per game.• Sophomore swingman Bryce Fowler - underwent foot surgery during the offseason. Battled the injury all year, but found a way to start 26 of the final 27 games.• Senior guard Jeff Wu - missed the final seven games last year with a leg injury. Wu will also miss the entire 2018-19 season after suffering an ankle injury in preseason practices.

NOW PLAYING A 20-GAME CONFERENCE SEASON• With the departure of North Dakota from the conference, the Big Sky’s makeup now includes 11 teams. Each team in the conference will play the other 10 teams twice. The Big Sky has not used a 20-game conference schedule since the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. • It had been an 18-game conference schedule each of the last four years.

WHAT A DEBUT FOR ESPOSITO• Playing in his first game as a Hornet after transferring from San Diego City College, sopho-more forward Ethan Esposito was impressive against Simpson.• The Naples, Italy, native had a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, no turnovers and a steal in just 22 minutes. He shot 7-for-9 from the field, 1-of-1 from the 3-point line and 5-for-7 from the free throw line.• Of those eight rebounds, a game-high four came on the offensive glass.• He averaged 10.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.5 blocked shots while shooting 52% (135-260) from the field for San Diego CC last season.• Esposito moved from his native Italy to the United States prior to his freshman year of high school.

FIRE POWER RETURNING• The Hornets welcome back eight players and a redshirt from a year ago, including three starters. That includes six of the top eight scorers from last season. That number would have been four starters back, and seven of the top eight scorers, if Jeff Wu didn’t get hurt.• Among the returners are starters Joshua Patton (10.9 ppg), Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa (8.5 ppg) and Bryce Fowler (6.3 ppg). Sixth man Jordan Tolbert (10.1 ppg) is also back as is Marcus Graves who averaged 13.9 ppg as a junior in 2016-17.• However, the team will need to compensate for the loss of forward Justin Strings who av-eraged 17.9 ppg a year ago and finished 2nd in school history with 1,570 career points.

LOOKING TO SCORE MORE POINTS• Sacramento State’s offense will need to put up more points this season.• The team averaged 67.4 points a year ago, which ranked 310th out of the 351 Div. I play-ing basketball schools. That number also ranked 11th out of the 12 Big Sky teams. • The Hornets use a balanced, half court offense that focuses on execution, and due in part to injuries, the team’s scoring output a year ago was its lowest in five years.• Sacramento State was 6-5 when scoring 70 points or better, and 1-20 when scoring 69 points or less last year.

GRADUATING PLAYERS/GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM• Entering the fall semester, the team had an overall grade point average of 3.002, the second highest mark in school history.• In addition, of the 34 Hornets that have expired their eligibility during head coach Brian Katz’s tenure, 33 have graduated.• Each of the last two years, the Hornets received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for having an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score ranking among the top 10 percent nationally.• In men’s basketball, Sacramento State and Stanford are now the only schools in California to ever receive the NCAA Public Recognition Award in back-to-back years.• In addition, Sacramento State is one of just two Big Sky Conference schools to ever receive the Public Recognition Award in men’s basketball, and the Hornets have done it twice.

NEW RADIO HOME FOR HORNET HOOPS - ESPN 1320 AM• It was announced in July that ESPN 1320 AM will be the new home for all Hornet men’s bas-ketball games. The broadcast relationship allows fans to hear all games live on the Entercom-owned sports station through the 2020-21 season.

COACHING STAFF CONTINUITY• Sacramento State features the same coaching staff for the sixth straight year, comprised of head coach Brian Katz, associate head coach Brandon Laird, assistant coaches Chris Walker and Nate Smith, and director of basketball operations Ajay Riding.• Katz in his 11th season at Sacramento State while Riding enters his 10th year. Laird, Walker and Smith are all in their eighth seasons with the Hornets.

HORNET NOTABLES• The Golden 1 Center has not been kind to Sacramento State, as the Hornets are 0-3 in the downtown facility which opened in September of 2016. That includes an 81-72 loss to UC Davis in 2016, and losses to UC Davis (64-47) and Portland (80-75) in 2017.• Senior guard Jordan Tolbert missed the Simpson game with injury, and is questionable to return for Tuesday’s game.
