LAST TIME OUTJOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 30, 2020) – The reigning Southern Conference champions are going to see everyone’s best fight. The ETSU men’s basketball team got that in Wednesday’s SoCon opener, but behind dominating performances from Ledarrius and Ty Brewer (Meridian, Miss.), the Buc-caneers landed the knockout punch – courtesy of a 53-point second half outburst – as the Bucs rallied for an 86-78 win over Western Carolina inside Freedom Hall. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • ETSU, who improved to 5-4 and 1-0 in conference play, kept its winning streaks intact over the Catamounts as the Bucs have now won 12 straight in the series and 15 consecutive at home. Overall, the Blue and Gold have won 29 of the last 30 against the Catamounts. With the loss, the Western Carolina dipped to 7-3, 0-1. • The Bucs’ 86 points marked a season-high against a Division I opponent, including the 53 in the second half. • Both teams’ shooting percentages were nearly identical as they each shot 50 percent from the field, while ETSU hit at a 40 percent clip from beyond the arc (10-25) and Western finished at 37 percent (10-27). The Bucs made 31 field goals, compared to the Catamounts’ 27. • The two squads each grabbed 33 rebounds; however, ETSU was plus-4 on the offensive glass (11-7), resulting in a plus-11 margin in second-chance points, 15-4. • ETSU finished with 13 steals and forced 19 turnovers, equating to 20 points off the Catamount miscues. • Wednesday marked the first time this season ETSU had fans inside Freedom Hall. The Bucs are allowing 10% capacity, which allowed 618 fans attend the SoCon opener. TOP PERFORMERS • The Brewer Brothers combined for 45 points on a blistering 18-of-24 shooting as Ty netted a game and season high 24 points, while Ledarrius registered a season high 21 points, seven rebounds and career-high seven steals. • Damari Monsanto (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Silas Adheke (Lagos, Nigeria) also finished in double figures for the Bucs. Monsanto added 13 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Adheke tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Adheke and Monsanto both had 10 second-half points. • Serrel Smith (St. Petersburg, Fla.), who started in replace of David Sloan (Louisville, Ky.), went a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line to finish with eight points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. • Western Carolina had four players score in double figures with local product Matt Halvorsen leading the charge with 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

SERIES HISTORYSaturday marks the 34th all-time meeting, with ETSU holding an 18-15 lead … Only 55 total points separate both teams in the 33 games played – ETSU scoring 2,424 points and UNCG scoring 2,369 … The Bucs swept the series a year ago as ETSU defeated UNCG 64-57 back on Jan. 8 in Greensboro and won 82-65 in Johnson City on Feb. 1, marking ETSU’s first series sweep over the Spartans since 2015-16 … UNCG is 8-6 all-time against the Bucs in Greensboro, while ETSU leads the series in Johnson City, 11-6 … UNCG has won four of the last six and six of the last 10 … ETSU is 10-6 all-time in games played in Johnson City … The teams also met in back-to-back SoCon Championship games in 2017 and 2018 with ETSU winning the first, 79-74 and UNCG taking the 2018 title, 62-47.

MORE SERIES NOTES The series has been tightly contested with 14 games being decided by three points or less (Bucs are 8-6); 14 by five or less (Bucs are 8-6); and 19 by nine or less (ETSU leads, 10-9) … Last year’s meeting in Greensboro was another close contest:Trailing 57-55 with 2:33 remaining, the Buccaneers closed the game on a 9-0 run to secure a 64-57 win inside the Greensboro Coliseum. The game was in the balance in the final minute as Patrick Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) made one of his two free throw attempts to put ETSU ahead by one with 38 seconds to play. However, things quickly escalated on the Spartans’ ensuing possession. Senior guard Isaiah Tisdale (Lexington, Ky.) stepped up to take a charge on Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year Isaiah Miller. Following UNCG’s offensive foul and turnover, ETSU called timeout and that’s when the Spartans lost composure.UNCG head coach Wes Miller slammed his clipboard on the court, resulting in a technical foul. The tension continued to rise after Tray Boyd III (Memphis, Tenn.) made one of the two free throw attempts as Miller collected his second technical, which forced him to be ejected from the game. Good then stepped to the charity stripe to knock down a pair of free throws, extending ETSU’s lead to four, 61-57, still with 23 seconds left. The Bucs made three of their final four free throws in the closing seconds to cap off the seven-point comeback win.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 1, 2020) – It’s not how your start, it’s how you finish.

After falling behind by 14 points early in the game, the ETSU men’s basketball team rode the hot hand of senior guard Tray Boyd III (Memphis, Tenn.), as he poured in a career-high 30 points en route to helping the Buccaneers slay the UNCG Spartans, 82-65, in front of 5,838 fans on Saturday evening inside Freedom Hall.

Boyd, making his first start of the season, ignited the Blue and Gold to complete a 31-point turnaround following his strong performance. The Memphis native was 10-of-16 from the field and knocked down six of the Bucs’ nine three-pointers to help ETSU bounce back into the win column and move into a tie for first-place with Furman in the Southern Conference standings. Boyd became the 11th Buccaneer since 2010-11 to reach the 30-point mark, and the first since teammate Patrick Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) netted a career-high 35 last season at Western Carolina.

Along with Boyd, junior guard Bo Hodges (Nashville, Tenn.) collected his second career double-double after finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while senior center Lucas N’Guessan (De Lier, Netherlands) added 12 points, three rebounds, two blocks and two assists. The Buccaneer trio accounted for 56 points on 20-of-34 shooting.

As a team, the Bucs – who completed their first series sweep of UNCG since the 2015-16 season – shot 56 per-cent (29-52) from the field and a season-high 56 percent from beyond the arc (9-16). After being out-rebounded by 12 in Wednesday’s loss to Mercer, the Blue and Gold won the battle of the boards by 11, 36-25, including a 26-10 advantage in the second half. The Bucs converted 13 offensive rebounds into 22 points, while ETSU assisted on 19 of its 29 makes.

With the win, ETSU improved to 19-4, 8-2, while the Spartans – who saw their five-game win streak snapped – dipped to 17-6, 7-3.

The Spartans came out on fire by hitting eight of their first nine shots and led 19-5 six minutes into the contest.

ETSU never panicked and quickly used a 20-6 run over the next 10 minutes to pull even at 25 with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Despite seeing the Spartans go back ahead by six on two different possessions, the Bucs battled and tied it at halftime as Boyd’s second triple in the closing seconds made it a 37-37 game.

Boyd led all scorers at the break with 14, while both teams shot 57 percent in the opening 20 minutes.

It was a perfect storm in the second half as the Bucs continued their hot shooting and the Spartans were silenced by ETSU’s stifling defense.

After never having the lead for the entire first half, the Bucs grabbed their first of the contest a minute and a half into the second when Boyd connected on a pair of free throws, making it 41-39. ETSU eventually went up by four but UNCG rattled off five straight points to regain a 44-43 lead with 14:50 showing on the clock.

Their lead didn’t last long as Isaiah Tisdale (Lexington, Ky.) grabbed an offensive rebound on the Bucs’ next trip down and laid one in for his first points of the night, giving the Blue and Gold a 45-44 advantage at the 14:28 mark.

ETSU never trailed after the Tisdale put-back and the Bucs went up seven, 53-46 with just over 12 minutes left. The Spartans threw one last punch as they pulled within two twice, but with the Bucs ahead 57-55, the Blue and Gold put the game away with a 13-1 run to go up 14, 70-56, with 5:29 remaining.

The lead never dipped below 12 and Boyd put the exclamation point on it when N’Guessan fed him for a three on ETSU’s final possession, giving him a 30-point performance and a 17-point home win for the Bucs.

ETSU shot 54 percent (14-26) in the second half, compared to UNCG’s 39 percent clip (11-28). The Bucs also made four of their eight attempts from three and the Spartans missed eight of their last 10. The Blue and Gold led for 18 minutes and 12 seconds of the second half.

The Spartans were led by preseason player of the year Isaiah Miller as he scored 18 points, while Keyshaun Langley pitched in with 14.

    NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES ... 1968, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2017, 2020

ETSU named Jason Shay the 17th head coach in program history on May 6, 2020.

Shay spent the last five seasons as the Buccaneers’ assistant coach where ETSU compiled an overall record of 130-43. The 130 wins are the most over a five-year run in program history, while ranking 15th nationally since the start of the 2015-16 season. The Bucs also won two Southern Conference regular season championships, two SoCon Tournament champion-ships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. This past season, the Buccaneers set a program-record with 30 wins, becoming just the fourth team in SoCon history to accomplish the feat. In 2017-18, the Blue and Gold tied the school record by winning 16 straight games – a streak that was the longest in the country at one point that season.

Prior to coming to Johnson City, Shay held assistant coaching stints at North Dakota, Northwest Florida State College, Ten-nessee, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Mercyhurst (Pa.) College. Throughout those stops, Shay had a streak of helping lead teams to nine consecutive postseason berths at the Division I level, including Tennessee’s first-ever trip to the Elite Eight in 2010 and a Sweet 16 run at Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005.

During his time at Northwest Florida, the Raiders went 62-6, while winning consecutive Panhandle Conference Champion-ships and back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA Division I National Championship game.

His two seasons at the junior college in Niceville, Fla., fol-lowed a six-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. During his tenure in Knoxville, the Volunteers advanced to six consecutive NCAA Tournaments, which included the Elite Eight run in 2010. The Volunteers also won the outright Southeastern Conference Championship in 2008 – for the first time in 41 years – and UT averaged more than 25 wins per season during his time on the staff, including grabbing the No. 1 ranking for the first time in program history in 2008.

Shay’s first Division I assistant coaching job came at the Uni-versity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he was first the director of basketball operations for two seasons (2001-03) before being elevated to a full-time assistant prior to the 2003-04 season. The Panthers advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both of his seasons as an assistant coach before the staff moved on to Tennessee for the 2005-06 season.

Shay began his coaching career at Mercyhurst (Pa.) College where he spent two years as an assistant coach and also as-sisted in the sports information office.

Shay, a native of Galesburg, Ill., was a walk-on at the Univer-sity of Iowa for Dr. Tom Davis where he earned his bachelor’s degree in health promotion in 1995. Shay then graduated with a master’s degree from Western Illinois in 1998.

Shay and his wife, Jana, have a daughter, Peija; and a son Joah.
