Ambu ® aScope - Quick Guide 1. Functions The Ambu ® aScope™ can be used/switched on for a total of 30 minutes within an 8 hour period from first switching on. When the 30 minutes or 8 hour period is exceeded the power to the aScope system is switched off. 4. Preparation for use The aScope Monitor can be placed on a flat surface or secured to an

I.V pole using the bracket supplied. The bracket also has a hook that facilitates easy, accessible storage of the Ambu aScope via the hole in the top of the aScope pouch.

Most users find the default contrast and brightness settings to be

optimal but these can be adjusted if required.

Consider dimming the OR/anaesthetic room lights to see the image from the aScope more clearly.

Check the battery indicator on the aScope Monitor.

If the time remaining is not sufficient for the procedure – charge the monitor by plugging it into the mains.

5. Insertion of the aScope Before inserting the aScope in to either the oral or nasal cavity use an independent suction device,

such as a Yankauer Catheter to remove as many secretions as possible.

Keep the cord of the aScope as straight as possible by holding the handle of the aScope high. This increases the range of movement of the tip and allows you more control.

Although not necessary, consider if a guiding device, such as a Berman airway might be helpful. Advance the aScope slowly, allowing the light of the camera to re-adjust at each stage.

Advancement needs to be slower than that of traditional reusable scopes. When the tip comes into contact with secretions the image may blur or bubble. If this happens try using the flick

method (flick the bending control lever up or down allowing it to return to a neutral position afterwards) to clear the secretions. If this doesn’t work try dabbing the camera tip on an internal mucosal wall to clear the image.

If the above fails, remove the aScope, rub the lens clean with either gauze or an alcohol swap.

Do not be afraid to exert a little pressure when doing this. Proceed as above. Advance the aScope to the carina and then slide the ET tube down the aScope cord and fix in place.

The aScope timer icon turns red at 5 minutes and counts down in one minute increments.

Version one - February 2010

6. Removal procedure Slowly withdraw the aScope while observing the image on the aScope Monitor. The distal tip must be in a

neutral and non-deflected position. If you remove the aScope and intend to use it later on the same patient, switch it off in order to conserve

the lifetime. Simply press the on/off button.

Once you have completely finished with the aScope disconnect it from the aScope Monitor and dispose of it in accordance with local guidelines for collection of infected medical devices with electronic components.

Wipe down the aScope Monitor as per the instructions in the Directions For Use.
