INTRODUCING OUR NEW HEAD COACH

LAWRIE THOMSON Lawrie Thomson is the new Aquae Sulis Head Coach, and we are delighted to have him on board! Not only is he a man with a plan for the club, he is enthusiastic about sharing the plan with swimmers and parents. As we heard in his first parents' meet-ing, he intends to speak with every swimmer (and parents too if they’re available) to understand his or her aspirations and work on setting individual training plans and goals, which will set the platform for the season ahead.

Lawrie believes education is key. He will work to increase our awareness of what performance swimming entails and, where necessary, bring in specialists to assist in that. He also believes good communications is essential and that success is borne through a healthy three-way relationship between swimmer, parents and coach. Lawrie has already published a competition calendar for this season running up to Christmas, including indications of who should compete and what the goals of individual meets need to be. Even greater attention will be given to future plans, once he has properly assessed the squads and its swimmers’ needs.

Over the coming months Lawrie will visit each of the Network Clubs to re-establish connections with the aim of building a healthy two-way dialogue about how the Net-work Clubs and Aquae Sulis can work together in the most beneficial way.

Lawrie’s arrival has breathed a new lease of life into a club, which has had its fair share of challenges over the past year, and the future is looking bright. Very bright Indeed!

Lawrie began swimming and started his coaching career in the West and has now returned. He lives with his partner, Kelly, in Portishead. His address presents quite

a commute on a daily basis and means that, where possible, anyone wanting to meet with him should aim to do so be-fore sessions, as for obvious reasons he will be aiming to leave punctually to get home at a reasonable time.

Coaching Qualifications

UKCC Level 3 Performance Coach, BSc Sports Coaching and Conditioning, HND Coach Education and Performance (from Bath University)

Coaching Achievements

Bangor Head Coach. Lawrie transitioned and restructured the club as they moved from a 4-lane 25m pool to a 10-lane 50m pool. He achieved top age group club at Irish Nationals in 2013.

Lawrie supplied three of the five swimmers to the European Junior Championships in 2013, securing positions in two finals and a semi-final.

Amersham SC Head Coach, 2014-2016. Lawrie secured promotion to Arena League Premier Division following an un-beaten 2015 season. He had multiple national medallists.

The weekend of the 24th and

25th September saw the first

short course, early season

Sprint Meet run by Aquae

Sulis. In the past the meet

had been shared with City of

Bristol. Although a Level 3

event, the meet entertained

swimmers of all levels and

proved to be a great success. Off the back of the success, Aquae Sulis has been granted its Level

2 licence for the Aquae Sulis Autumn Meet in November, 18th to 20th. Huge thanks to all of the

volunteers and officials who turned out to support the event and make it a resounding success.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Sainsbury Bag Pack at the beginning of Sep-tember. It was a good way for everyone to get together before the new season started af-ter the summer break. The kids were exemplary bag packers and I am sure Sainsbury’s will be happy to have us back next year and for this to be a regular fundraising event each September. We raised £615.54. Well done to everyone who took part. We are hoping to be chosen to do a bag pack in Waitrose in November and are waiting for confirmation of this.

We ran a cake sale, tombola and raffle at the Aquae Sulis Sprint Meet at Hengrove at the end of September and these proved as popular as usual with swimmers, parents and the general public. Thank you to everyone who supplied cakes in abundance and to Anne Cookson, Derek Hood and Cecily for manning the stand all day. We will be doing a repeat of this at the Grand Prix in November so please look out for requests for bottles and cakes nearer the time.

Lastly, please have a look at the fundraising link on the Aquae Sulis website. This takes you to easyfundraising.org.uk which is a simple way to raise funds for the club whilst using your normal online retailers such as Amazon and John Lewis. For example, you want to buy a pair of shoes from John Lewis. Instead of going to johnlewis.com directly, you first go to easyfundraising.org.uk (you will need to register and set up an account) and choose John Lewis as a retailer. Once you have made your purchase a donation will be made to us. The amount raised really can add up so please consider using this for your online shopping, particularly in the lead up to Christmas. More info here: http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/how-it-works/.

If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to get involved with doing some fundraising for the club please email me or talk to me up at the Uni. Everyone is very welcome to be on the fundraising team!

Do you have any experience in Crowdfunding? If the answer is yes we would like to hear from you by this Friday 7th October if possible.

Please contact Karen at [email protected] or telephone/text me

on 07969 341807

Many thanks for your continuing support of the club’s fundraising activities.
