Editorial What a great spirit of our volunteer kitchen staff during a major power cut back in February. We arrived at the club to find not only no electric but also no gas. However our volunteers, Julie and Richard together with Isabella and Conchita, decided to carry on regardless to ensure our regular mem-bers did not go without their lunch. Vegetables were cooked on BBQ burners and the meat was taken to her home for cooking by Joan Thompson. It was almost served on time, well done and thanks to those involved. The president has now appointed new committee member Margaret Whittley to take over as Publicity Officer, who will also in the future bring the club even further in the twenty-first century by the club hav-ing a Facebook page. I should like to thank those who have helped me in the past years with informa-tion and photo’s for newspapers although not always published by them. Terry Smith

Food For Thought Submitted by Rosemary Ferguson
“Life must be lived forwards but reviewed backwards”
Behind the Scenes - Estepona Business & Internet Centre My most dominant memory of our November Open Day was the constant clamour of conver-sation emanating from the shop, the insistent demands for more food from Sue (pressed into service as an emergency waitress), and the increasing urgency of washing more glasses to cope with an ever thirsty crowd. Occasionally a message from Julie would be passed down the chain by a harassed Jackie that I had to go faster. You see, during the whole evening I was confined to a cell at the back of the shop charged with keeping victuals arriving. We to-tally underestimated the numbers of loyal customers that would support the event. I eventually emerged to a wasteland of empty plates and dirty glasses. Scattered amongst the debris were a few die-hards finishing the last dregs of wine. A bedraggled and exhausted Ferran from La Casa Del Rey who had experienced his first exposure to an expat throng was surrounded by empty bottles. Our newly appointed member of staff, Jackie, looking bemused, was studying her contract for a get out clause, and Julie was muttering, as she does, 'Never again'. My cheery 'Well that seemed to go OK' was met with a deathly silence and a soggy bread roll. This time will be different. The tastes of Andalucía will be supplied by the excellent chef from La Casa del Rey. We will have more glasses and plates and my sole task will be washing up. I may even have time to converse with guests. You are all welcome. Nick Nutter, Estepona Port Business Centre Your Invitation Page 35, See Also Advert On Page 16

Presidents Letter April 2013 The AGM is over for another year. It was good to see so many of you there and the meeting passed off uneventfully until it came to ‘Any Other Business’ when we had a lively discussion over non- members gaining access to the club and all the facilities. It is not the responsibility of any one person to check the membership but if you see anyone looking lost, please feel able to speak to them and ask if they are members or have been signed in. The problem with former members who have not renewing this year has been addressed by the membership secretary supplying me with a list of non-payers and I will now be able to advise event organ-izers to make sure that guest fees are charged where appropriate. Noreen Cook retired from the committee after 23 years and was presented with a plaque and a special bottle of Mumm champagne. Audrey Jinks and Barbara Salisbury were made Hon-orary Members in recognition of their hard work for the club over many years. We have an exciting program planned for the coming year including a three night trip to Ma-drid in the early autumn so make sure that you keep informed by attending the Thursday meetings and checking the website and magazine. Comments have come to the attention of the committee from both
current and ex members that trips are mostly to the same places.
Time limitations mean we have to keep within a certain area for
day trips this makes the choices of new venues difficult.
Should you have any suggestions for any event or activity at
your clubhouse, or for a trip whether for a day or longer
period, please contact a member of the committee.

Monthly Computer Tips –
April 2013 - Shopping Online Online shopping is convenient and can save you money, but it's not quite the same as shopping in the high street. At its best, you can purchase items from trusted, well-established retailers - although, of course, you can't actually inspect the goods. But at its worst, shopping on the web can be more like using your credit card at a car boot sale to buy goods in unmarked sealed cardboard boxes. Anyone can create a web page, so there's no immediate way for a shopper to tell whether an online shop is genuine at first sight. So there's more to being safe than just ensuring your card transaction is encrypted. Things to watch out for: Firstly, ask yourself whether the offer is realistic. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Quite a lot of stolen and sub-standard goods get offered at seemingly huge discounts by small traders on auction and free advertisement sites. Online 'sales' of non-existent event tickets are notorious. But even mainstream dealers frequently limit your ability to check what you're buying - photos of goods with captions like "the item supplied may not be identical to that illus-trated" are all too common. It's a sad fact that many perfectly honest online business owners simply don't understand their legal obligations. But that makes it difficult to distinguish between them and less legitimate traders. You should probably err on the side of caution. Can you identify the seller from information on the site? The law requires every commercial website to include specific contact details - at least a trading name, a street address or Post Office box number and a phone number or email address, and these must be clearly visible. A phone number is a bit safer than an email address alone, but beware of sites that only give a mobile number. Consumer sales sites must (by law) also publish some obligatory terms and conditions - par-ticularly about cancellations, returns and refunds. Check them out and make sure they're valid. Check the carriage charges too. If you can't see what they will be until the final stage of the checkout, the seller is not playing by the rules - they should be clearly set out in the terms and conditions. If the trader has their own website, you can also use a 'WHOIS' service on the web to look up the regis-tration details of the web address - the 'domain name' - of the site. Then check they match the details given on the site. The registration will also show how long the do-main name has been registered - sites with registrations only a few days old or that are incomplete should be avoided. If the site only gives a PO box number, you can get the street address (but not the name) of the holder by calling the Royal Mail helpline. On the web, you get none of the subtle signals - body language, verbal cues - that could tell you at a car boot sale when a trader is not to be trusted. So, provided the statutory details are present on the site and seem in order, it's worth phoning the trader to find out if they sound businesslike. It's also worth doing a web search for customer comments in blogs or online communities.
If you're buying via an auction site (such as eBay), it should publish seller ratings and history. These
are well worth checking, although there is a recognized scam - sometimes a seller will set up and
trade honestly in a small way for some time to gain a good reputation, >>>Continues page 9
Windows Tip of the Month WINKey+M - Minimises all
Windows
9
<<<8 then will put up a spectacular offer, that turns out to be fraudulent, and disappear. So it's worth
doing a web search for the seller as well, in case they also have their own website or there are cus-
tomer comments. Check – and check again.
Once you're reasonably satisfied that the trader is genuine, you should look at the ordering system. If
it takes you to a different site - particularly for making the payment - you should perform the same
background checks again.
Then, if everything still checks out, make sure the web address of every page on the ordering site
starts with https://. This is most important on the page where you type in your card details. The final
's' before the colon is crucial as it means the data you send and receive on that page is encrypted in
transit. A padlock or key symbol at the bottom of the browser window also indicates you're on an
encrypted connection - but this is not a perfect guarantee, as the symbol can be faked using
JavaScript on a page that doesn't use encryption.
But the encryption, although necessary, is actually less important than knowing you're communicat-
ing with the right website. The https:// confirms this by sending your web browser an encrypted elec-
tronic 'certificate'. If everything is in order, it happens invisibly. But sometimes a warning will pop up.
The most common one says the site you're on isn't the site that owns the certificate. This should
make you very suspicious. It's a common fault on badly-designed legitimate sites, but it can also
indicate a malicious program that might steal your money or card details.
A warning about Amazon: Many of you probably consider this a trusted site and so it is. However
we consider some of its security could be improved. There is no requirement to enter a Security
Code when paying by Credit Card nor does it use the Verified by Visa / MasterCard additional check.
This should not be a problem if you yourself are purchasing. However be aware that Amazon can
also hold your credit card details to make future purchases “more straightforward.” Again if you are
the purchaser this is not a problem. However if someone else were to access your Amazon account
they could have a real spending spree if your card details are there and no further checks are re-
quired. Do not leave credit card details on Amazon. Log into your account and check the pay-
ment details. If there are credit cards listed there delete them.
Finally, if a site asks for your card details when you respond to a 'free offer', it's certainly fraudulent.
No free offer involves prior payment, and no legitimate trader is permitted to hold your full card de-
tails except while they are currently processing a specific purchase without your authority.

A new feature for Tablet and Smart Phone Users.
As part of the Monthly Computer Tips, we intend to introduce App of the Month. Members may be
aware that the term App (Application) is replacing the term Program not only for Tablet and Smart
Phone users but also in Windows 8. We cannot guarantee that every App that we review is available
for all tablet and smart phone operating systems. Each user will need to check with their relevant
“App Store” Everyone seems to be producing Apps, but some are simply watered down versions of
websites. The website often provides much more in depth information e.g. compare the App The
Weather Channel with the website www.weather.com
The App of the Month feature will not guarantee the best App for a topic; there are simply too many
to evaluate. The common thread among all the Apps described in the first few months will be that
they are all free. The price of freedom often is that there will be adverts. A paid for App will normally
be free of adverts. >>>Continues Page 10

Scam of the Month - April - Don’t be caught by the money off scam.
Anne is anything but a stupid old pensioner and far from alone in her complaint. The Office of Fair
Trading has looked previously into this company’s outrageously profitable practice of getting customers
to sign up to a membership without even realising.
It turns out Anne’s son, like many who have been caught out by Rewards First, signed up after he
booked a flight on Flybe’s website. He clicked on an advertising banner on the site offering him £15 off
a future flight. Unbeknown to him, filling out the form for the deal meant committing himself to a 30-day
free trial to Rewards First, followed by a monthly membership fee of £17.95. Similar offers appear on
sites such as Thetrainline.com and Ryanair.
Last year, the OFT warned Adaptive Affinity, the company that owns Rewards First, that it should make
sure its practices are not deceptive, concerned that customers did not realise when they signed up for a
cash back deal on a holiday website, for example, that they had entered into a binding contract. Many
thought they had supplied their credit-card details for identification purposes to facilitate a credit check.
Another company that operates in a similar way is the shopping site Redsave.com. They appear to
offer very cheap prices if you sign up to become a member, What they don’t tell you is that they will
take £19.95 from your credit card each month as the on-going membership fee. In austere times, scams are becoming more and more prevalent and it is not always easy to keep up with the latest cons. Submitted by Peter Dowd

New Tax Legislation For Residents In Spain As you may know, the Spanish government has issued a new legislation for Residents in Spain about Declaration of assets over 50,000 Euros located outside Spain. According to the new law, which was published on the 31st January 2013, those individuals or compa-nies who are Residents in Spain and are the owners or have some sort of rights or assets outside Spain, which value is over 50,000 Euros, are obliged to make a Tax Declaration about that. The Tax Declaration must be done through the Tax Form number 720 and the submission of it must be done "on line" (on the web page of the Agencia Tributaria) between the 1st of February and the 30th of April 2012. The lack of submission of this Tax Declaration of assets outside Spain could be subject of investigation and important fines from the Spanish Tax Offices. The assets outside Spain subject to the Tax Declaration, must be declared into 3 different categories: 1. Real Estate properties. 2. all kind of accounts, investments, or deposits in banks or financial compa-nies. 3. Rights, shares, rents, insurances, bonuses or dividends deposited, managed or acquired out-side Spain. The value of 50,000 Euros shall be considered by each category in total (i.e. 2 properties for 30,000 Euros each, individually does not reach the limit of 50,000 Euros, but it shall be considered in total, so both make more than 50,000 Euros and there is obligation to make the Tax Declaration). Also, no mat-ter the number of owners, the Tax Declaration should be made individually anyway, later it must be stated the percentage of ownership. Should you have assets outside Spain over 50,000 Euros, it is strongly recommended you filing this tax form 720 in order to avoid important fines from the Tax Offices (minimum fine established 10,000 Euros up to 150% of the value of the assets outside Spain not declared.. Manilva Solicitors can assist with the Tax Form 720 which includes the advice, preparation and submis-sion of the Tax declaration with the Spanish Tax Offices. Contact details page 20.
Saturday 16th February Valentines Party Submitted by Barbara Salisbury
Entering the Club premises I knew it was going to be a successful evening. Doug and his team had arranged the room and tables to perfection; the number of tickets sold was perfect and when the food arrived it was served with efficiency and was delicious. John Porter was on top form thumping out tunes to get a willing group of people dancing. The amazing talent John Porter has is 'perception' about his music - he just 'knows' what type of music his audience want to hear and dance to. With such thought and planning which went into the evening it couldn't possibly fail. Thanks to everyone to helped to make this new venture using outside catering such a great success. AND to put the icing on the cake - the ladies received a present of a box of chocolates.

Friday 22nd February - Doug’s Mystery Trip
We all expected it, seeing the forecast on the day before, and for once unfortunately it was
accurate, the rain poured down. So once all picked up off we went up the Manilva Road to-
wards Gaucin with views of the mist to the right and left, and all bumps of this terrible road
being felt. First stop was to a new bar/café opposite Gaucin petrol station, a quick dash to the door, some went to other hostelries. A very pleasant bar which on fine weather would have
great views from the terrace to the coast. Tapas and menu looked good, Joanne Mitchell rec-
ommended the meringues and she took a large bag home. This bar is worth a visit if in the
area.
So then another dash to the coach for the trip towards Ronda, having the same misty views,
even from the viewing point we stopped at when all decided no way getting out of coach to
appreciate the vista in the mist.
The next stop was for lunch at a restaurant past Ronda on the San Pedro Road. Mixed feel-
ings about the menu del day, Some were cold, meals sent back, but wine kept flowing.
Would you then believe, as we started home the rain stopped and proper views could be seen
travelling back home. It may not have been the most successful trip but the company and
atmosphere was great being up to friendly club standards. Thanks Doug for the organising against all elements.
Tuesday 26th February - Ladies and Gents Lunches - With Entertainment!!!!!!!
Once again both Romeos and Juliet's met at the very popular venue, Golden Wok at Bena-
mara, Asian buffet of excellent standard. We were split up, Juliet’s being inside in the cold,
Romeos outside on the terrace in the sun (best choice!).
And so to the entertainment: Doug brought his grandson Eka to join us for lunch, he then decided to have a look at the swimming pool (no don’t guess yet), Joanne then took over to
look after him, and he got more cocky walking along the stepping stones that divide the pool
across the middle, so then the best entertainment he danced around a bit, no problem.
He stopped, chatted, then SPLASH, he forgot and then stepped back. We all knew it would
happen eventually. BUT Joanne did not jump in to rescue him, Diane Hackett came to the
rescue and pulled him out. No harm done.
When they got home and explained the event to mum Julie her comment was mother you
never looked out for me either!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gardening Group News: The first meeting this year of the Gardening Club was held in the
ICE clubhouse on Tuesday 12th March. Even though the weather was awful, more people
than expected turned up. As Sheila Thompson has now stepped down as the Organiser,
Sandy Avis plus Pamela Shine offered to step in. An interesting meeting took place with
various suggestions being made for the year – garden centres to visit, to maybe arrange a speaker on plants/flowers, visits to member’s own gardens, a botanical garden to
visit................. Some cuttings of succulents were brought in to find their name and then
offer to members. With Keith Rumsey’s very helpful gardening encyclopaedia and Pamela
Shine’s Ipad, we were able to see and discuss these and various other plants/shrubs.
It was agreed that the next Gardeners Meeting will be held on the 9th April at 11.00am
at the Coffee Shop in Agrojardin. Any ICE members are very welcome to come and join
us. Whether you have a garden, balcony, terrace or even a window box, come and join our
Gardening Club. Submitted by Sandy Avis

Friday 16th March - Computer Group - iPad Presentation
A good turn out of 18 members, most with either an iPad or tablet, attended this presentation.
Those aspects discussed: Comparison with Android, looking after your iPad, applications
(apps, many being free), updating, 3G, Apple TV and photo editing.
Thanks go to Debra Coleman, and also Anthony Shine who spent time with Barbara Salis-bury, a new convert, to set up iPad having only just purchased.
Tuesday 19th March - 3 Day, 2 Night Trip to Granada
Tuesday turned out to be a very wet day, not sure who can pick the wettest day for a trip,
Doug with his mystery trip or this time Joan.
After arriving at our hotel at midday, a quick lunch, then our visit to The Alhambra and that’s
when the heavens opened and we had torrential rain for a long period, but carried on in the best spirit expected from club members.
Wednesday was a free day, most jumping on a bus to Granada city centre, visiting the Cathe-
dral, souk, and a bit of shopping.
The evening was a trip to Los Tarantos, flamenco dancing in the gypsy caves. Before this
those who wanted a walk had an excellent guided tour around the Arab area of Albaicin, a
historic UNESCO area.
Thursday an early start for a trip to Sierra Nevada skiing centre, a popular tourist destina-
tion, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts. A
surprisingly hot sunny day to people watch on the slopes. And then the trip back home.
Thanks Joan for an excellently organised trip and looking forward to the next to Madrid.
Further members information on the trip will be published next month.

Match Making 4 - “Explores of ICE Discover Txakolina” The Impresario was at his wits end. The music industry needed new talent, a new sound that would bring back the crowds to the London Palladium. A group, whose songs would once more get “Joe Pub-lic” buying CD’s. He had travelled to the four corners of the globe searching for new voices, but to no avail. Exhausted, he had booked into a small hotel in the Spanish Pyrenees for peace and quiet in the mountain peaks above Bilbao. Suddenly, the tranquility he had been hoping for was shattered - by the beautiful, melodic, harmonious, rhythmically pulsating chords of a male voice quartet. He leapt to his feet, found the fabulous four, and signed them up, on the spot. It sounds easier than it was, being that they were true Hill Billies who had never been to a town before. However, money soon enticed them to travel to London. When they arrived, they took the record indus-try by storm, and the recording studios could not wait to release their new sound onto the waiting pub-lic. The four Basques also could not wait, but for them it was to be released onto the fascinating sights and lights (and maybe fights) of old London town. After breakfast, on the first morning at their 5 star hotel, the 4 singing Spaniards dashed down the stairs to the foyer, and crammed themselves, to a man, into the revolving door of the hotel. The squeezing of 4 large gentlemen into the orange like segment of a revolving door is not a good idea. The door stopped rotating. It became stuck. The Impresario, seeing his Basques pushing and shoving at the glass panels of the jammed door, decided to help by using his foot to give the mechanism a kick-start. It worked! Too well, in fact, as the exit apparatus began to whirl and gyrate like a whipping top. The spinning wheel began going faster and faster until the intrepid musician’s agent again used his foot; this time as a wedge. The door came to a sudden stop. So sudden in fact, that the 4 choristers shot out of the hotel entrance like shrapnel from a cannon, right in front of an approaching red, number 9, double-decker bus. That killed off the impresario’s hopes of making a fortune. However, he had learned some-thing from this event - the moral that “You should not put all your Basques in one exit. What has this moral to do with wine and food you might be asking? Well, if you only have one type of wine in your cellar to choose from, it could spell disaster for an extensive gourmet meal. Long standing members of ICE may remember Leif, a Norwegian friend of mine who was a staunch member of the club many years ago. Leif was more English than any Englishman I have ever known. His speech, his attire and his mannerisms were typically English. At the age of 12, he was requested by Lord Mountbatten (through Leif’s shipping magnet father) to take photographs of the damage caused by a German air bombardment of a Spanish village in the Basque country. Leif did as he was re-quested and thought no more about it. Much later, Leif and I were in Madrid and, when were looking at Picasso’s masterpiece “Guernica”, he suddenly realized that this painting represented the very village he had been sent to photograph. We decided, there and then, that a visit to the Basque country was necessary, both for him and myself. The two intrepid ICE explorers made plans without more a due. That year, we travelled extensively throughout the three regions of this western area of the Pyrenees known as “El Pays Basque” starting in San Sebastian (the Gipuzkoa region) through to Bilbao (Biscay region) and finishing up at Vitoria, the Capital of the Basque Rioja region known as Alavesa. The food was excellent throughout the whole expedition. We ate Katu-arraya (Cantabrian spotted dog fish), Ternera a la bilbaina (Bilbao style beef) and Becadas a la vizcaina (Woodcock in a Basque sauce). And, of course we had lots of tapas that are known as pintxos (Pinchos) in the Basque country. If you’ve ever been to a tapas bar or restaurant anywhere in the Basque country, you know, and will have drunk, Txakolina (tchalk-o-leena). You walk into those establishments, stacked with the most mouth-watering foods your eyes have ever beheld, and order a glass of wine. The bartender pulls out a tumbler (not a wine glass, a tumbler) then holds the bottle of Txakolina as high as possible in one hand and the tumbler as low as possible in the other, and pours a cascading stream of crisp refreshment into the glass. >>>Continued on page 27

<<26 The wine is simple, pure, crisp, joltingly refreshing and highly drinkable. Txakolina is a wine in-digenous to the Basque country and appears to be the only wine drunk in this part of Spain. It’ is a white wine made from a grape called Hondarribi Zurria, exclusively grown in the Basque country. Txakolina has been characterized as the ideal summer sipper, but it is also a perfect wine for the colder months. It is a gentle sparkling wine, which could easily replace Cava at a celebration meal, and being low in alco-hol (8º-10º) means you can sip throughout the whole party, without getting drunk. Its razor-sharp acidity is a great pairing for a good many finger foods, from hard cheeses to raw oysters to salty, deep-fried bites. Being British, I love “Fish & Chips” but have you ever found a wine that compliments this dish? Well Txakolina does. Try it at one of the club’s fish & chip suppers. There is a red variety of this wine, but it is not so popular. However, the Basque white wine is well worth searching for, but before you dash of and buy a bottle, take into account that it is not like any other wine you have had the pleasure of drinking. It is completely distinct and different. Choose it to drink with certain foods and at a certain time and place. Enjoy Txakolina, and be different. Submitted by Brian Buckley Creaser P.S. Remember the trick – pour the wine from above the tumbler, and only serve two fingers at a time as the bubbles disappear fairly quickly. It is best drunk while still fizzing. A Basque Pintxo: Toast two slices of thick bread and spread Pâté/Foie gras generously over . Cover s with cheese slices (preferably goat’s milk) and finish off with slices of Jamon Iberico on top. Place the toast into a pre-heated oven, 180º, for about 5 minutes to melt the cheese slightly and warm the ham. While this is going on, or before if you prefer, make vinaigrette. Into a glass container, put 3 teaspoons of virgin extra olive oil, 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey and whisk well together. Take the toast from the oven and pour/spoon the vinaigrette over them. Finish off, by sprinkling chopped parsley over them to decorate. Here you have 2 fantastic, but simple pintxos to accompany a small tumbler of Txakolina wine
British Fish and chips with a bottle of White Wine (Txakolina). We all go out four or five times a year for fish and chips but how many have prepared this dish at home, so this month I am giving you a recipe for Fish & Chips that you can prepare at home. Ingredients: Sunflower or vegetable oil, 4- 175g thick cod or haddock, 225g self raising flour, salt & pepper, small bottle beer, 6-8 large floury potatoes. Method: For the chips, peel the potatoes and cut into the size you prefer, wash well and dry in a cloth, Place in a fryer and allow to cook gently for about 8 to10 minutes until they are soft but still white. Leave to cool on grease proof paper, increase the heat level to 180°C. Season the fish and dust with flour, this enables the batter to stick to the fish. To make the batter sift the flour, add a pinch of salt and place into a large bowl. Whisk in the beer to give a thick batter, the consistency should be like double cream. Coat two of the fillets and place in the hot fat and cook for about 8 to 10 minutes until crispy. Remove from the fryer and place on grease proof paper and keep warm while you cook the other two fillets. When the fish is cooked reheat the oil and cook the chips for 2 to 3 minutes until they are golden and crispy, then sprinkle with a little salt to absorb the fat. Its al-ways nice to serve with a tin of mushy peas, bread and butter, and a glass of the Txakolina wine which Brian has told you about. Did You Know: Not to salt a chicken before it goes into the oven as it tends to toughen the flesh, wait about 20 minutes before taking it out of the oven. I have only tried this once, see what you think. To tenderise a roast chicken add a little ‘Mothers Ruin’, pour the gin over the bird first then baste every 20 minutes. The alcohol will have evaporated but the gin will have done its work! PS I prefer to drink my gin first then breath on the bird! Happy Cooking, Dan Cook

Poetry Corner
Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan , or the dawn of Camelot. There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me, We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince, Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since. We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee' And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many, And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney. And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice, And when they made a movie, they never made it twice. We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three, Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp, And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp. We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T, And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go, At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe. For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be, And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead, And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson , and Zeppelins were not Led. And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees, Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars, And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars. And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free, And dorms were never co-Ed in the Land That Made Me, We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag, And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag. And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea, And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, T-Birds came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks, And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks. And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee, And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues, We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me, There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill, And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three, And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say, And now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retin-A. They send us invitations to join AARP, We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans, And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines. And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be, Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me.

JUST FOR A SMILE
THIS IS VERY TOUCHING
One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side
eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and got out to investigate.
He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?"
"We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass." "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you, " the lawyer said.
"But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree."
"Bring them along," the lawyer replied.
Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You may come with us, also."
The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children
with me!"
