FROM THE EDITOR I’m officially calling Petal’s first issue the “Whirlwind Issue”, because

it was literally put together in 16 days. And here it is, and just think,

for issue #2 I’ll have a whole month to get it together before it

publishes on May 1st! I’d like to thank Rachel from ihateblonde.com and LA

from High Heel Suicide because without them and their willingness, I

wouldn’t be typing this right now. So thank you ladies, thank you, thank

you, thank you!

Now go enjoy the whirlwind first issue of Petal Magazine you little

rascals!

ABOUT THE EDITOR I guess I should go and tell you all about myself a little, since I’m the

one-women machine behind Petal. I’ll try not to ramble or make it boring

and terribly long, I promise!

My name is Stephanie, but most everyone calls me Stephie or Steph. I’m

just 19, living in the meteorically diverse state of North Carolina where

we experience every season for longer than it needs to be and summer isn’t

long enough. I’m from the sunny state of California, which would explain

why I hate the winters and most of autumn here. That, and I’m four hours

from the beach instead of 30 minutes like I would be back home.

I want to be a designer and stylist when I get older, and I kind of do

that already. I own my own online shop, Lunar Deer, and style my friends

when they need it, but I don’t want to settle there. I’m not going to

design school because I can’t afford it, and honestly, you don’t need

design school to hit it big. But I kind of like it this way because

instead of being handed everything, I have to work my ass of for it, so

success will be that much sweeter in the end.

Petal is the sister magazine to my other, OBSCURUS, which is a dark

fashion magazine. Think of Petal as Sailor Mini Moon, and OBSCURUS as her

grown-up alter-ego, the Black Lady. OBSCURUS has been out since January,

and has over 400 viewers right now. I wanted to create something like

Petal because my personal style goes from “dark to light”, so I wanted to

be able to write about both sides of the street. My desk is my bed, and I

don’t have to worry about putting my name on food in the fridge, and I

also get to bring my kitten Sonny to work with me every day!

With that all being said, I hope you enjoy this first issue. But keep in

mind, it’s a “whirlwind” issue. I came up with the idea for Petal spur of

the moment, in mid-March and immediately e-mailed Rachel and LA. So it may

not knock your pants off, but don’t worry, it’ll get a hell of a lot

better!!

it surely won’t be the last time you see them within these virtual pages.

She’s a one-woman show who’s making her way into the independent shop

world, and she’s doing it with class and witty graphic tops from

sweatshirts to tanks!

PM: The "About" section on the HHS Big Cartel page says that both the

clothing line and your blog were spawned from studying the L.A. fashion

and personal style scene. How did you go about that? I've heard of people

bringing notebooks with them and jotting down, some sketch their subjects,

and some bring their camera and snap picture

LA: I've been deeply involved with the CA lifestyle and scene since I can

remember, The Doors, Beverly Hills 90210, Black Flag, the palm trees,

Olsen twins are just a few of my all-time favorite things, so the

Californication was a subconscious process.

PM: What was your vision when you first started HHS? Like when you were

first thinking of it, what was running through your mind?

LA: The first plan was making some designs were rolling in my mind into

tees just for myself, but decided to make a few more pieces to cheapen

costs. I posted pics of the tops on the blog and Instagram and they were

sold out in two days, so the idea of creating a knitwear brand just

appeared on the horizon.

PM: HHS has been strutting its rad stuff since 2012, but out of all the

products to pass through the store and into customer's hands, which one

would you say has been your favorite? Such a hard question, I know!

LA: Def I must say Cupcakelicious tank, our most popular top, is selling

like sweets! However I cannot easily remove my HHS sucks muscle tank, as

well.

PM: Take us through a day of LA!

LA: My days are full of rainbow trolls, care bears and pink ponies, two

minutes later the iPhone alarm rings and everything turn into silver

computers, no pink ponies, meetings with zombies and errands in platforms,

that's a kind of day in LA's world.

PM: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? And what do you hope to have

achieved by then?

LA: Sitting in a comfortable armchair tapping fingers on a desk that says

'LA, the boss' having a vodka mimosa after attending High Heels Suicide

store opening in Rodeo Drive. So I hope have achieved a HHS store in Rodeo

Drive and a private jet.

PM: If you could collaborate with any other designer or model, who would

it be and why?

LA: Cara Delevingne, needless to say.

PM: Zombies are invading L.A. and you only have minutes to grab a few

belongings and a weapon before they ascend on your place, what do you grab

and what's your weapon of choice?

LA: My three dogs a lo-carb can of Monster and a bazooka, I've always been

curious about rocket launchers.

PM: If you were in charge of the Coachella line up for 2013, who would you

put in it? (you can just list like, 10 bands)

LA: Britney Spears (she has my full support since the shaving moment) No

doubt, Coheed and Cambria, Calvin Harris and Queens of the Stone Age.

PM: I've seen that you've also worked with our blogger feature, Rachel

Lynch of ihateblonde.com a few times. What's it like working with the

blonde alien herself?

LA: Working with Rachel is like a trip to a new galaxy full of flowers,

glitter rain and pink castles with soft cushions. I love Rachel, she's a

über professional model, stylist and artist.

PM: And last but not least, we have to ask everyone this because how you

like it can say a lot about you, but how do you like your coffee or tea?

LA: Skimmed latte, for sure!

Our first blogger feature was a no-brainer, I’d been following her and

admiring her styling and outfits from a-far for over a year now. So there

was no doubt I wanted her to be the premier-child of Petal Magazine’s

Blogger Feature. She also goes hand-in-hand with our shop feature as well!

THE UNEARTHLY BLONDE

Subject// Rachel Lynch

Occupation// Alien Princess, model, college student, owner of Blonde DNA,

shoe hoarder, fashion blogger.

PM: I already know you're such a hot commodity among the fashion blogger

scene, but some people out there reading this may have no clue in space

what this little Blonde Alien is about. Care to enlighten them a tad?

RL: It actually came from my therapist. She told me one day that I looked

like an interesting little alien, and I liked it.

PM: You state that you've been getting in trouble for your outfits since

the second grade, so I take it you were born with 206 very fashionable

bones and it just came natural to you. When did you decide though you

wanted to broadcast your style for everyone to see via the world-wide web

where you now have fans all over the world?

RL: I didn't really decide that I wanted to share anything, it just

happened.

PM: I've followed you since I joined Lookbook (about a year ago), and this

question has always nagged at me profusely: Where did the idea of

contradictory "ihateblonde" come from?

RL: It came to me in a bio lab one day. We were doing some

cell analysis stuff and I really hated it.

PM: Now about your brand, Blonde DNA, when did that idea take form in your

mind? And was it more of just something to do for fun or does it serve a

strictly business purpose with the "ihateblonde" name?

RL: I'm a Science Journalism major, so a lot of the things I do have a

science emphasis to them.

PM: On your blog (Tumblr) it says that you're parents are ex-FBI agents.

What was that like growing up? Like were they doing background checks on

all your boyfriends or anything crazy like that or were they relatively

chill?

RL: Yeah, it was actually scary. I ran away to LA a few times and my dad

called me and was like how's school? And I was like it's so great daddy!

And then he's like well aren't you on, Hollywood & Franklin? And I was

like freaked out because he knew my exact geographic location. I always

have restraining orders against two ex-boyfriends and two "fans", that

happened pretty easily thanks to my dad only having to make one phone

call. He also has done a background check on everyone I have dated. My one

ex in LA had actually been previously married (didn't tell me about it)

and my dad was the one who told me... creepy.

PM: What's something you've always wanted to do secretly? Take

a spaceship to the moon, be a rock star, be the next Guitar Cowgirl (that

naked chick with parades around with her nearly naked cohort) of Time

Square, etc.?

RL: I've always wanted to be a doctor. I think someday I will... but in

a holistic healing sort of way. Someday, I believe I will be a healer

PM: With you being such a successful blogger and model, it's only natural

you have your "sponsors". So out of the millions of clothes you have in

your apartment/closet, what percent would you say you bought yourself?

RL: Only a few pieces now, and they're usually my favorite things.

PM: If you could collaborate or model for any designer or clothing company

in the world, who would it be and why? And while we're on the subject, who

are some of your favorite designers??

RL: I'd love to work with Jeremy Scott someday. He's so my speed. I love

his vibes. Designers? I love Chromat, Minimale Animale and UNIF.

PM: Aside from having your own online store and attending school pre-med,

what's your favorite or most memorable achievement you've grasped so far?

RL: I actually go to school for Science Journalism. I'd have to say my

most memorable achievement is staying by my dad's side, and getting him

through cancer. I woke up, spiritually and mentality. It was a very

powerful experience for the both of us, very maturing as well.

PM: And last but not least. I've seen these comments, at least five per

image in Instagram, of people asking your height. So for everyone who's

been asking the sought-after question, how tall is miss Rachel Lynch?

(P.S.: everyone, it says on her Model Mayhem page...)

RL: Hahaha! I am 5'3 mama and I love it!

PREPARING FOR THE FESTIVAL

The first and most obvious thing you’ll want to do is choose with

festival(s) you’ll be attending. You’ll then either need to buy the

tickets, divvy up the cost between your group (if you’re going with

friends), or beg your parents by promises to do your most-hated choirs.

After that is all said and done, then you get to the more fun details like

picking out your outfits and waiting to see what the weather will be like,

as well as putting a countdown on your calendar!

Make sure of the following though:

Make sure the people in your group won’t flake and can afford their

ticket or part of the ticket package.

Have your transportation set in stone. And if you’re taking your own

vehicle, get it check out a week before just to make sure you won’t

break down on your way to the festival!

Pick out your choices for an outfit the night or two nights before in

case you over-sleep the day of because you stayed up late being

excited.

Have a pre-meditated list of the band schedule, marking the bands you

want to see most. Some festivals offer free iPhone apps to help you

out. Other than that, set an alarm on your phone 15-20 minutes before

each set (depending on the popularity of the band).

Have everything packed the night before so you don’t forget anything!

And double-check before you leave!

HAIR AND MAKEUP

The following pages and advice couldn’t be stressed enough. I attended

Warped Tour for the first time last year, and couldn’t tell you how many

times I and my friend heard some girl complain that her makeup was screwed

up, or her hair was a mess, etc. Here is your festival mantra: Keep It

Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.). When it comes to festivals, less is always more.

Besides, you future band member of a husband might not be too swooned if

you eyeliner has melted all over your eyes or your non-waterproof mascara

is running down your face!

Keep your makeup to a foundation with SPF in it and one that whisk shine

away, pressed/matte powder is optional as well. If your skin is sensitive,

apply regular sunscreen to your face as well! Any eyeliner worn should be

water and smudge proof, as well as any eye shadow you should decide to

wear. I can’t speak for false eyelashes because I’ve never worn them, but

I’d say glue those suckers down good.

The most popular festival do is a bun. Whether it’s messy, ballerina,

sock, braided, what have you. It’s perfect. Your hair stays out of your

face to prevent it from getting even more sweaty and making you break out,

you don’t have to worry about your hair sticking to the back of your neck,

and it won’t (or shouldn’t) get caught on anything! Shirt-haired girls are

the lucky ones in the sun, but for us long-haired gals, an updo would

probably be your best bet. Just don’t load it up with body pins or

hairspray!

If you want to, bring with you some setting spray to keep your makeup on,

and some blotting sheets as well. Bring some extra bobbing pins though,

and keep an extra hair tie around your wrist too, just in case!

DRESSING THE PART

For most, music festivals are like a second Fashion Week. But instead of a

runway and designer clothing, you have hard-pact dirt or asphalt and your

own personal style! The only thing in common is a bounty of beautiful

girls and back stage passes.

DRESS ACCORDING TO THE WEATHER AND THE FESTIVAL YOU ARE ATTENDING! I

cannot say this enough, so repeat it three times to yourself now. If it’s

going to be 90+ degrees, unless you have a skin condition or scars you

don’t want others to see, stay away from long-sleeves and jeans/pants!

Fainting in a crowded place is not fun at all! You also need to take in

the atmosphere and crowd of the festival you’re going to! If it’s crowded,

opt for some cute close-toed shoes, no one likes a broken toenail,

especially if you’re on dirt and it can get infected! You also need to

make sure your clothing fits you properly. I saw way too many nip slips

and butt cracks hanging out while I was there, I even had my bikini top

accidently pulled down when a drummer of We the Kings threw a stick into

the crowd. Make sure everything is secure and isn’t tight. You’re more

than likely going to be in the sun, and you don’t want your bikini top to

fall down like me, or your shorts be so tight they get uncomfortable and

you wish you’d worn something else.

For the most part, a “dress code” of festivals is shorts and a tank top.

But dress to fit you. I’m honestly obsessed with bustier tops right now,

so I’d most likely opt for one of those right now (if I were going to a

festival this year and not saving up to move out). Maxi skirts are cute

too, especially with a crop top, just make sure the fabric is breathable.

Some vendors there will actually cut your shirt for you (crop it off, take

the sleeves off, etc.), but beware because some charge as much as $10 to

do so. Nasty Gal, Dolls Kill, UNIF and Kiss KL are just a few places

online to go look if you’re trying to find an outfit no one else will

have! But never underestimate stores like Urban Outfitters or even Forever

21, someone may have the same top as you, but it’s all how you style it

that makes it different.

Keep accessories light. If you’re bringing sunglasses, make sure they’re

secured in a case of in your backpack/on your shirt collar. Want to

protect your scalp? Bring a cute floppy hat or fedora, but only if it’s

not going to be terribly hot!

KEEP IN MIND

Not every festival is the same. The atmosphere at every one will be

different as well as the people attending. Here are just a few things to

keep in mind aside from looking great and having a great time.

Water and keeping hydrated is so important. Most festivals allow you

to bring your own water and offer free refills, which is what I did.

I never went to the bathroom once while I was at Warped Tour, because

I was in the sun so much and sweating so much! So keep hydrated as

best you can, and find shade when you need it.

If you go with a friend, stay close and watch out for each other, you

never know what kind of creeps might be out there and what could

happen!

Bring cash instead of your card. Not every place is going to bring a

card machine or have one of those card readers for their phone.

For those going to festivals like Warped Tour or Mayhem Fest, if you

do not want to be in the pit, stay away from it because you will get

hurt. If you’re watching and a mosher comes to close, do not be

afraid to push them back. Do what I learned to do at local shows

around here where people would mosh, if someone comes too close, hold

out your fist.

Keep an eye on your backpack, and always be aware of it. Someone

would easily try and pick-pocket you while you’re watching a set.

All in all, music festivals are amazing things to attend. You meet bands,

new people and have a great time for the duration that you’re there. They

were begun with the intention of their goers having a good time, so that’s

what you should do! Just stay safe and take care. Oh, and remember to

always look great too!
