Dear Friends,

Thanks to animal lovers like you, our devoted volunteers and our generous supporters, we

difference in the lives of thousands of animals in need at the Seattle Humane Society. We are

especially proud to announce that we have achieved an all-time high save rate of 96.5 percent for

We are able to do this incredible work thanks to the committed and enthusiastic support of

people like you. On behalf of all of the cats, dogs and critters in our care, thank you, and with

your continued support we’ll save even more pets in the years to come.

Bringing People & Pets Together

Every year, nearly 6,000 animals come through Seattle Humane Society’s

doors in various stages of life and health. Some are week-old kittens too

young to even open their eyes. Others are older dogs who should be

spending their golden years with a family, but find themselves homeless

through no fault of their own. Many are strays who have been fending

for themselves, and others still have been rescued from shelters where

they ran out of time. All of these pets have one thing in common —

they need our help.

What sets Seattle Humane apart is that we accept every animal that is

brought to us, regardless of age, breed, beauty or physical condition.

Animals stay with us as long as it takes for us to find them a home.

When pets are brought to us requiring medical attention, our veterinary

team performs life-saving medical procedures. If a pet requires training

to thrive in a home of his or her own, we provide it. Why? Because we

believe that people and pets belong together. As a result of our efforts,

in 2011 we achieved a record high save rate of 96.5 percent and are

poised to save even more animals’ lives in the years ahead.

Mary, a 2-month-old kitten, was surrendered to Seattle Humane as part of an unplanned litter. We found her a new

home just five days later!3

Giving Pets a Second Chance: Nicolette’s Story

Nicolette, an 11-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, was found all alone

on the streets and brought to the Seattle Humane Society. When no one

came to claim her, we made it our mission to find her a new home.

An older pup very set in her ways, Nicolette was unsure of her new

surroundings. To relieve her stress, we placed Nicolette in a loving

volunteer foster home where she was able to nap comfortably on her big

dog bed as long as she liked while we searched for her special someone.

We never gave up on Nicolette and just two days past her one year

anniversary in Seattle Humane’s care, her special someone finally arrived.

A kindhearted widow spotted Nicolette on our website. Her older dog

had recently passed and she was feeling lonely for a companion. When

she saw Nicolette, she was reminded of her dog and her heart went out

to this senior pup who found herself homeless in her golden years. The

two met and while Nicolette was reluctant to trust a new person, the

woman understood that she had been through a lot and would need

time. She decided to adopt Nicolette and give her all the time in the

world to feel safe again.

In just 48 hours, Nicolette’s adopter called us to say that Nicolette follows

her from room-to-room and lays adoringly at her feet, happy to have

finally found a home.

Bringing Families Back Together: J.J.’s Story

Losing a pet feels terrible. You search the

neighborhood, call your local shelter, and put up

signs around town waiting anxiously to hear if

anyone has found your four-legged friend. The loss

of a beloved cat, dog, or critter affects the whole

family — even the other pets in the household who

may feel depressed by the sudden disappearance

of their playmate.

Seattle Humane Society is a safety net for lost pets

in our community, caring for stray animals until we

can reunite them with their owners or find them

new homes of their own.

One day, two friends were walking by a burned

down house in Renton when they heard a cat

meowing from inside. Sure enough, they found

a very frightened tabby cat. They assumed the

kitty belonged to the owner of the house and had

been abandoned, so they brought the tabby to the

Seattle Humane Society where they knew he would

be well cared for.

Our admissions team scanned the tabby and

found that he had a registered microchip. We

immediately called the owner and discovered that

the cat was named J.J. and that he belonged to a

family in the neighborhood. J.J. was an indoor only

cat and escaped from his home a few days earlier.

He was part of a family that included another cat

who had not eaten since his brother went missing.

J.J.’s owners were so grateful to be reunited with

their lost kitty and J.J. snuggled right up into their

arms, happy to be safe and sound again.

Nicolette is now spending her golden years in a loving home.

J.J. was reunited with his human and feline family members.

The Future of Seattle Humane Society

We are proud of our accomplishments, but they only serve to highlight the important work ahead. Thousands of animals end up in area

shelters every year due to unplanned litters. As the community leader in animal welfare, Seattle Humane Society is taking the lead to

reduce the number of pets born without homes by increasing our spay/neuter services.

We currently perform more spay and neuter surgeries than any other agency in King County and recently expanded our spay/neuter

services for pets belonging to qualified-income families. By adding an extra surgery team, we will double the number of spay/neuter

surgeries we perform for public pets from 2,500 to 5,000 annually.

In addition, Seattle Humane has embarked on a significant partnership with Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine

in which fourth-year veterinary students will spay and neuter our shelter pets as part of their clinical training, allowing us to serve more

animals. The first WSU veterinary students will begin hands-on training at the Seattle Humane campus in Bellevue in May 2013.

Cleo, a 2-year-old Border Collie mix, was surrendered to Seattle Humane because her owners could no longer care

for her. She benefited from our volunteer Foster Care Program where she learned friendly manners and new tricks!

Cleo was adopted by a loving and active family.

Every Donation Makes a Life-Saving Difference

At the Seattle Humane Society, we keep administrative costs to a minimum so

that 80 cents of every dollar is spent on the pets in our care. We are proud to

report that for the fourth consecutive year, Seattle Humane has received a four-star

rating — the highest possible rating for nonprofit agency financial management

— from Charity Navigator, the nation’s leading charity evaluation group. This

accomplishment places our shelter in the top six percent of charities rated annually.

As an independent, donor-funded nonprofit, we are so grateful for the generous

animal lovers who support our life-saving work. It is paramount that we continue

to be excellent stewards of your donations while providing the best care possible

for the animals who depend on us.

Programs & Services for the Community

The Seattle Humane Society is the region’s #1 destination for everything pet-related! Our busy Adoption Center is

open seven days a week and last year we found homes for nearly 6,000 loving pets. For our pet-loving community,

we offer a variety of workshops and dog training classes, low-fee spay/neuter services, and a Visiting Pet Friends

program. In addition, last year more than 1,300 low-income seniors were able to keep and care for their pets thanks

to our Pet Food Bank.

Seattle Humane is able to offer such a wide variety of programs and services thanks to our corps of more than 1,400

dedicated volunteers. Volunteers assist in every department, from making reminder phone calls for spay/neuter

appointments to delivering donated pet food to local senior centers. We are proud to say that volunteers are at the

very heart of our organization.

12

Page 13: Annual Report (FY 2011) - Seattle Humane Society

Pet Adoptions

The Seattle Humane Society has pets in every shape, size, color and type. We believe that every healthy and adoptable

pet deserves a home of their own and that there is the perfect pet out there for every person. Last year we placed 5,960

dogs, cats and critters. We pride ourselves on making lifelong matches between people and pets — you might even call

us experts at matchmaking! Our Adoption Center is bright, bustling, and a fun place to bring the whole family to meet

their new best friend.

Those who can’t make it to our shelter in Bellevue can visit the MaxMobile, our 38-foot mobile adoption unit that travels

to stores, markets, and events throughout the region, full of pets ready for on-the-spot adoptions. Last year, more than

300 pets met their match on the MaxMobile.

Low-Fee Spay/Neuter

In addition to spaying/neutering all of our shelter pets prior to

adoption, we offer low-fee spay and neuter surgeries for pets

belonging to qualified-income community members. Seattle

Humane Society currently performs more spay and neuter surgeries

than any other agency in the county. Last year we spayed or

neutered more than 2,400 public pets.

We are taking the lead on ending pet homelessness in our

region by doubling the number of public spay/neuter surgeries

we perform, to 5,000 annually. We are also embarking on

a partnership with Washington State University’s College of

Veterinary Medicine in which fourth-year veterinary students will

spay and neuter our shelter pets as part of their clinical training

beginning in May 2013, affording Seattle Humane veterinarians

the capacity to serve more animals.

Elsa, a 10-year-old torbie, was found fending for herself on the streets while suffering from a medical condition.

We provided Elsa with the care she needed and now she’s waiting for her special someone at Seattle Humane.

13

Page 14: Annual Report (FY 2011) - Seattle Humane Society

Foster Care Network

Our volunteer Foster Care Program is nationally recognized. Last year, more than 4,400 pets benefited from

foster care. By opening their hearts and homes to pets in need, foster care volunteers help us expand the walls

of our shelter and save more animals’ lives. They give older pets a break from the shelter, give pets time to

recover from surgeries, bottle-feed newborn puppies and kittens, and so much more.

Medical Funds for Pets in Need

Thanks to the Lexus Fund for shelter dogs and the Keith D. Grinstein Memorial Fund for shelter cats, we are

able to care for pets needing extra medical attention. From injuries to infections, dental issues to surgery, we

never have to turn away pets in need of extra care. Last year 100 dogs and 119 cats received the medical care

they needed to become healthy and adoptable thanks to the Lexus and Grinstein medical funds.

Volunteer Corps

Volunteers are at the heart of the Seattle Humane Society. They walk our dogs and brush our cats, deliver pet

food to the elderly and disabled, help with office work, provide adoption support, participate in special events,

and so much more. We have more than 1,400 volunteers. Last year, our volunteers dedicated 190,000 hours

of their time — the equivalent of 92 full-time staff members.

Community Outreach

Every month, our Pet Food Bank feeds more than 1,700 pets belonging to low-income, disabled and senior

clients. Pet Project helps more than 180 low-income community members disabled by AIDS keep and care

for their pets by providing pet food, supplies and basic veterinary care. More than 30 Visiting Pet Friends

volunteers regularly bring the healing power of animal companionship to nursing homes, hospitals and

children’s homes.

14

Page 15: Annual Report (FY 2011) - Seattle Humane Society

Life-Saver Program

Seattle Humane’s Life-Saver Program rescues pets who have run out of time

at other shelters. Last year, we transferred in 2,046 pets and found them

loving homes. We reach out to our community first, then to shelters across

the state and even out of state to save animals’ lives.

Classes & Training

Seattle Humane offers a variety of fun, effective training courses and

workshops for people and their pets. From puppy training to pet first aid, we

have a class for everyone and most of our dog adoptions come with a six-

week training course. More than 1,600 people attended our classes last year.

Humane Education for Kids

The MaxMobile, our bright yellow bus for the animals, brings humane

education to the community every week, visiting local schools, community

centers and festivals. We also provide a summer camp for kids and a teen

club to prepare teenagers for volunteerism at Seattle Humane.

We transferred Hazel, a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever mix, to Seattle Humane when she ran out

of time at another shelter. We found the perfect outdoorsy family for this lively pup.
