Our MissionWe proudly promote the human-animal bond by saving and serving pets in need. Seattle Humane is an independent, donor-funded nonprofit animal welfare organization and the largest private animal shelter in King County.

We save thousands of abandoned, stray and surrendered pets in our community every year, and find loving homes for every healthy and adoptable animal who enters our doors. We have no time limits, and we are the safety net for dogs and cats who have treatable conditions, or are considered too old to place by many other shelters. For pets in need of extra help, we provide medical treatment and behavioral training to ensure that every adoptable animal thrives in their new home.

Our Alliance with WSUSeattle Humane and the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine (WSU) are very proud of the success of our alliance to help shelter pets in our care. This year, Seattle Humane welcomed more than 70 fourth-year visiting veterinary students to our campus. During their two-week rotation at our shelter, each student receives hands-on training from Seattle Humane veterinarians. The students spend 50 hours each week treating animal patients in intensive care, assisting in surgery and working on resolving various medical cases.

Margaret LarsonHost, New Day Northwest — KING 5Margaret Larson is a veteran television journalist currently serving as the host of KING-5’s New Day Northwest. A highly accomplished journalist, she has worked as a foreign correspondent for NBC Nightly News, news anchor for the Today Show, and

a correspondent for Dateline NBC. Margaret, her husband Tim, and son Kyle are all devoted animal lovers, and a Jack Russell rescue pup, Pip, completes the family.

Cayle ThompsonAnchor – KOMO NewsCayle Thompson is excited to mark his fourth year helping with Tuxes & Tails! (It's also one of the few nights he gets to stay up late.) Cayle's alarm usually goes off at 2:00 a.m. during the week. He's up early as part of the KOMO Morning News team, and co-anchors

KOMO News at 11:00 a.m. On Wednesdays, Cayle helps Seattle Humane pets find new homes with the station's weekly "Pet Cares" segment.

Animals have been a near constant in Cayle's life. Growing up on the family farm in Texas, Cayle and his brothers cared for dogs, cats, chickens, horses, a few hamsters, some ducks, and even a pair of peacocks! Today, Cayle has a soft spot for senior pets, and advocates for their adoption. His appreciation for older pets has grown along with his own two senior dogs, Knuckles, a 13-year-old Boxer, and Knatic, a 10-year-old Miniature Schnauzer. They are an unfailing source of love, laughter, comfort, and companionship.

Dear Friends,Welcome to the event of the year – Seattle Humane’s 29th annual Tuxes & Tails!

Thank you for being right by our side to help build a new shelter, celebrate this success, and then joining us tonight in continued support of animals in need because it’s animal people like you who know this job is never complete. It’s our partners at this event and in our community who keep our doors open for the thousands of orphaned pets who need us. This gala is dedicated to saving animals and all the ways you help make that possible.

Last year marked the arrival of many milestones. In Aug. 2017 we opened our newly constructed shelter and veterinary hospital, but what happened next solidified the importance of not only the new facilities but the resolve of our staff, volunteers, and generous donors. Seattle Humane mobilized within days of moving into the new facility to transfer in animals from Texas following Hurricane Harvey and subsequent natural disasters. This disaster effort continued through the end of the year and included the largest Life-Saver Rescue transfer in our history – 154 dogs and cats flown in from Puerto Rico! These animals are now with loving families thanks to your support.

Seattle Humane was also awarded Eastside Small Business of the Year on Mar. 29 by the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce. This award recognizes the superior performance, established community presence, commitment to workforce excellence, and the demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit of our organization. Our business of saving lives and completing families is only possible because you make animals a priority in our community.

We continue to care for vulnerable animals and use our resources to assist more wet noses in need throughout Washington and beyond thanks to partnerships with other shelters whose animals need veterinary care and services. We’ll share more exciting news tonight about our goals to impact animal welfare on an even larger scale, and how you’ve been an integral part and inspiration in these plans for the future.

Thousands of animals come through Seattle Humane’s doors in various stages of life and health.

What doesn’t change is the compassion we show for each and every one of them. Tonight you’ll hear stories about pets transferred out of harm’s way from places like Puerto Rico, Texas or from areas impacted by the wildfires in California. You’ll see animals on the runway who came to us hairless and neglected, some perfectly happy and content but their families couldn’t keep them. Some were found tiny and helpless.

There are many reasons why these animals find their way to Seattle Humane and our reason for saving them remains the same: Because they matter. They deserve loving families, too.

While Seattle Humane continues to be a safety net for pets and the people who love them, we also couldn’t do it without you. Please hold your bid cards high tonight and remember these animals need your help. We need your help.

Adopting a Pet at Tuxes & TailsAt Tuxes & Tails, our adoptable shelter guests are the stars of the runway show, and every pet is available to go home with a loving family. We are unable to complete adoptions at the event; however, you will have the opportunity to place a hold on a specific animal at Tuxes & Tails and complete the adoption at the shelter on Sunday, May 13.

Here’s how you can adopt a new family member from Tuxes & Tails.

1. Visit with our staff adoption advisor at the adoption booth and complete a pre-adoption form. The adoption booth is open from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again after the Celebrity and Pet Runway Show at the end of the evening. The advisor goes over the adoption procedures with you, as well as detailed information about the shelter pets at Tuxes & Tails.

2. Place a no-fee courtesy Tuxes & Tails hold on the animal you would like to adopt. We take two holds for each animal on a first-come, first-served basis. The first hold expires on Sunday, May 13, at 12:00 noon. If that person does not adopt the animal, the person with the second hold has the next opportunity to adopt from 12:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 13.

3. Seattle Humane is open early from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 13, exclusively for Tuxes & Tails patrons. You may adopt any animal at the shelter if the animal does not have a hold, whether or not he or she appeared at Tuxes & Tails. If you go home and decide to release your hold, please contact the shelter right away at (425) 649-7563 to make the pet available to the next person on the list.

Wine TossDon’t miss your chance to take home a fabulous bottle of wine! Values range from $20 all the way up to $250 per bottle! Here’s how it works: Each participant will been given three rings to toss onto their wine of choice. Participants must stay behind the line to qualify, and to make the toss more challenging and fun! Higher-value wines will be placed in tougher positions, while the lower-value, but equally tasty varieties will be placed on the outer, more accessible rings. After three tosses, if you still do not happen to loop a ring around a bottle of wine, don’t worry, you will still be given a bottle of wine from the “outer ring”! You may only win one bottle of wine per three tosses. Each round of three tosses is $40.

From hurricanes to safe harbors, everyone plays a part in animal rescueOriginally from Puerto Rico, Penguino and Orbit were among 154 pets transferred to Seattle Humane following Hurricane Maria – our biggest single transfer to date! Our staff and volunteers quickly placed Penguino and Orbit into a foster home and did the same for dozens of others that were not yet ready for adoption. Meanwhile, Kimi Gordy was on the search for two kittens. After connecting with Seattle Humane’s Foster Program Manager, Kimi visited Penguino and Orbit’s foster home and immediately fell in love with their personalities. When Kimi learned that they were displaced due to Hurricane Maria, she knew she had to give them a home. Not long after the double adoption, Kimi received a letter from the kittens’ rescuer in Puerto Rico, Biatriz, who shared they had been abandoned by a river. Kimi and Biatriz now correspond regularly on Facebook. From rescue to adoption, Penguino and Orbit’s story is a testament to the incredible life-saving work supported by Seattle Humane’s Disaster Fund.

Auction RulesGeneral Auction Rules1. Checkout opens at 8:00 p.m. Payment by the successful bidder

may be made at any time during the evening after checkout opens. Please allow 20 minutes following the sale of a live auction item.

2. Full payment is mandatory the evening of the event unless alternate payment form is completed. You may pay by cash, check, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX or Discover). Items may be removed only by showing a receipt obtained during checkout. Please make your check payable to Seattle Humane. We are a 501(c)3 charitable organization and your payments are tax-deductible as a charitable contribution to the extent provided by law. Generally, you may deduct as a charitable contribution the amount you pay above the fair market value of the item. Please see your tax professional for tax deductibility.

3. We request that all items be removed the night of the auction unless otherwise indicated. Larger items may be removed at a later, agreed-upon time if needed. All items not removed from the auction premises may be claimed after Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Seattle Humane’s Factoria location during normal office hours, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Any items not picked up within 90 days after Tuxes & Tails will be donated back to Seattle Humane.

4. Please pay attention to all conditions, restrictions, and expiration dates on items and services. Generally, gift certificates do not include tax, gratuity, or alcoholic beverages. Unless otherwise noted, all services must be used within one year of the auction date.

5. Dates for all trips and similar events must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. All reservations should be made at least one month in advance. All tickets in travel packages are for coach travel, unless otherwise specified. No refunds are permitted for canceled, lost, or unused tickets and/or accommodations.

6. Airline blackout dates apply to all tickets, regardless of airline. Blackout dates are subject to change. Tickets cannot be reissued or refunded.

7. Seattle Humane has attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly. All items are sold “as is.” Seattle Humane neither warrants nor represents and shall, in no event, be responsible for the correctness of the descriptions, genuineness, authorship,

provenance, or condition of the property. No statement contained in this catalog or made orally at the sale or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty, representation, or assumption of liability.

8. Each person issued a bid number (bidder) assumes all risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising there from Seattle Humane, its elected and appointed officials, members and employees, the auctioneer(s), the auction company and its agents and employees, the event organizers, sponsors, and/or volunteers connected with the auction.

9. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless otherwise indicated.

10. Seattle Humane reserves the right to withdraw any item prior to bidding.

11. Must be 21 years or older to purchase any package containing alcohol.

Live Auction Rules 1. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the

purchaser who confirms the sale by signing an auction invoice which constitutes a legal contract to buy.

2. Auctioneer reserves the right to settle any and all disputes, complaints, misunderstandings, errors, and sales at his/her discretion. The auctioneer’s decision is final.

Silent Auction Rules 1. All items in the Silent Auction use Mobile Bidding to place your

bid amount using your own smartphone. If you need assistance with bidding, please see a volunteer concierge bidder at the Help Desk.

2. You may skip ahead to the bid amount you want to pay. The next bidder must bid higher than you to be successful.

3. Some items have a “Guaranteed Purchase” price. The Guaranteed Purchase enables you to guarantee that you will own the item.

4. All silent auction sections and certificate boards close at 6:30 p.m. Announcements are made prior to closing. The closing bid certified by an Auction Official constitutes the winning bid.

Any items won and not picked up within 90 days after Tuxes & Tails will be donated back to Seattle Humane. All sales are final.

16 Fund-A-Need: Saving Even More LivesYour gifts to Seattle Humane’s 2018 Fund-A-Need will support our work of “Saving Even More Lives” and completing even more families made possible by the new adoption center, state-of-the-art shelter, and primary care veterinary teaching hospital.

Building our world-class facility was the first step in our journey of transforming animal welfare in our region and statewide. Now, we need to take full advantage of our new home by quickly ramping up our existing programs to do much more.

We need to save more animals through our Life-Saver Rescue Program, fill the shelter with pets, and provide them with all of the medical and behavioral care they need to be ready for new homes. At the same time, we will increase our community outreach to help families avoid the difficult decision of surrendering pets, as well as raise awareness of our mission for new generations of animal advocates.

Supporters like you know that life is so much better with a pet. When you raise your paddle for 2018’s Fund-A-Need, you’re ensuring people from all walks of life are not alone and have someone to cuddle. People like Kim, who adopted Little Mister, an orange-and-white blind kitty, who now has a best friend. But before Little Mister found Kim, he was saved from a rural shelter without resources to care for a special needs animal, received life-saving medical care from our veterinary team, and quietly recovered in the home of a foster family.

By raising your paddle, you’re bettering the lives of people who bring loving pets into their homes. Someone who wants a buddy to share his adventures. A veteran who needs the emotional support only a trusted friend can provide. A volunteer whose incredibly valuable time is spent folding laundry, cleaning cat cubbies, walking dogs, being part of a family that values animal lives.

All the while saving pets like Tank, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever mix surrendered to us because his family could no longer care for him. He was quickly treated for a severe skin condition in our new Schuler Family Medical Center and kept under observation in one of our modern dog dorms. A loving foster family then cared for him while he slowly recovered and prepared for his new forever home.

Marigold’s StoryMarigold’s journey began with a bumpy road. She was surrendered to Seattle Humane when her family was no longer able to care for her medical needs. Our veterinary team examined Marigold to find that she tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), and also had advanced dental and vision problems. Thanks to our generous donors and dedicated veterinary team, we had the resources to surgically remove her damaged eye, treat her dental problems, and get Marigold the TLC she needed.

A volunteer foster parent stepped up to help Marigold recover, and when she was placed for adoption aboard our MaxMobile – fate stepped in! A man who recently underwent the same eye removal surgery found his furry doppelganger in Marigold. We couldn’t think of a more purrfect home for this lucky feline!

Whatever it takes: Enzo’s adoption journey puts our dog behavior, foster, and adoption teams to work! Enzo was surrendered to Seattle Humane when his owner could no longer care for him. This statuesque German Shepherd was only four years old when he came to us and had a few manners to work on before moving on to his new home. Enzo spent quality time in different foster homes during his stay with us so that he could get used to new people and environments. Our foster volunteers took Enzo on lots of hikes and took beautiful photos to help him get noticed and adopted. Being in a foster home away from the other dogs at the shelter helped him relax so he could work on his training as well. It took time, but he finally found his perfect human and is happily enjoying lots of games of fetch during the day and soothing cuddles at night.
