Welcome
It's more than half way through February as I sit writing this and looking out of the window the snowdrops and crocus are in full bloom with the daffodils not far behind. The temperature today is a balmy 13.9C – a warmer day than some in July – but not unique for this time of year. And so with the lengthening days and occasional warmer weather one's thoughts turn to the garden and the upcoming flower shows of the season.
One of the first that I very much enjoy visiting is the Edinburgh spring show of the Scottish Rock Garden Club held in Fairmilehead Parish Church hall. To see and smell these first little beauties of the season is such a delight. Another of the same ilk is the Haddington Garden Club's lovely spring show in the Corn Exchange in late March followed by the RCHS (Caley) Show in the Fletcher Building at the Botanics in Edinburgh. Do go along to one or all of them – you won't be disappointed!
It was very sad to learn of the demise of Ayr Flower Show due to council cutbacks and we need to be aware that all events like this are under great pressures to carry on both financially and physically. Our own Show at Musselburgh – now the biggest in East Lothian – relies heavily on the public turning out to support it both as visitors and exhibitors as well as helpers. All communities in Scotland are facing the pinch in public funding and in order to try to carry on we need as many people as possible to contribute to the effort it takes to produce.
So please support us and other local shows in the area and if you can lend a hand so much the better.
Look forward to seeing you on the day!
Lindsay Morrison

Entry Fee - This is an open show and not restricted to MHS members. Entry fee for MHS members is free; for non MHS members there is a show membership fee of £1, regardless of the number of entries submitted, and all Juniors entries are free.
The Entry Form printed on the left-hand centre page of the Schedule should be completed in full and handed to the Secretary, together with the required staging fees.
Advance Registration Alternatively, exhibitors may now email a list of the classes they would like to enter, along with their name and address and contact number, to the show secretary via the society’s web site: www.musselburghhorticulture.org.uk All emails must be received by 10 pm on the Thursday before the show, a confirmation email will be sent. Your staging cards will then be printed and ready for your collection when you deliver your exhibits.
2. Staging of Exhibits Exhibits: All exhibits for the Horticultural Sections, except Floral Art, must be of the competitors’ own growing and in their possession for a minimum of twelve weeks prior to exhibition. All vegetables must be clean, sound and properly dressed. Exhibitors are requested to name varieties where possible.
No exhibitor will be allowed to place more than one stand of any exhibit in any one class, and no prizes will be awarded to any exhibits which are not in accordance with the Schedule.
Vases: Unless otherwise stated in the Schedule, only vases supplied by the Society may be used for the Cut Flower Classes.
Staging Cards and Placing of Exhibits: Staging Cards will be issued by the Secretary on receipt of a completed entry form. Exhibitors must ensure that these cards are clearly completed and the correct class number is marked on the back.

Unless with the specific permission of the President, only Judges and nominated Society Officials will be permitted in the hall whilst judging is in progress.
4. Complaints
Any complaints must be lodged with the Secretary, in writing and specifically stating the objection, BEFORE 2 pm ON THE DAY OF THE SHOW. The Show Steward, President and one other nominated person will deliberate on complaints. Their decision will be final.

SCOTTISH MACAROON BARS (suggested recipe only)
4 oz potato (you need a dry potato)
16 oz powdered sugar (more or less as needed)
dark or milk chocolate for dipping
finely shredded coconut for coating
1. Boil the unpeeled potato until ready. 2. Drain, peel and mash the potato and allow to cool completely. 3. Begin adding some powdered sugar, about half a cup at a time. Don't fret
if the mixture becomes gooey, because it will, just keep adding the sugar and mixing well, and soon it will have a fondant texture.
4. Add enough sugar so that it comes together and is very stiff. 5. Prepare a baking sheet (which will fit into your freezer) with waxed paper. 6. At this point, you can roll the macaroon mixture into small balls and
flatten them, or for the traditional style, shape it into a rectangle on the sheet and then place in the freezer for about 4 hours or longer.
7. Prepare the coconut, by placing it on a baking sheet in a preheated oven for 5 minutes. Stir the coconut and continue to monitor closely as it will turn brown very quickly.
8. Remove from the oven when it is a nice brown color; cool and mix with an equal amount of untoasted coconut.
9. Place in a plate which will be a good size for dipping the macaroons. If you made a rectangle shape of macaroons, cut them into your preferred size and shape.
10. Keep in the freezer until ready to dip. When you are ready to finish the macarons, melt the chocolate. Dip each piece into the chocolate, and immediately coat with the combination of shredded coconuts.
