Andrews University Virtual Commencement and

Celebration of Graduates

Berrien Springs, Michigan May 1–3, 2020

Inclusion of a candidate’s name in this commencement booklet may not be used as evidence of having completed the requirements for the degree for which he/she is listed.

An official list of graduates will be posted on the Andrews University website.

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO GRADUATES

Dear Graduates,

I know this ceremony was not how you imagined your graduation a few months ago. And I am sorry it is like this but please know that this virtual commencement in no way diminishes your success. All of us at Andrews University are proud of you. I am proud of you.

We are particularly proud of your achievement in reaching this point of graduation. You have managed many and various challenges, not least of which are the last two months of your studies, and you have done so with courage and determination. You have also done much more. You have shared with us your story, your lives. That has been a gift to us and we are the better for having had you as a student at Andrews University.

Thank you too for engaging with us as a community of faith. The journey of faith means constant learning as we deepen our understanding of the gospel. You have done that alongside us, and our hope is that as you graduate you do so with a deepened commitment to your God and to being an active part of a faith community.

I want to thank you too for being a class that has taken to heart the phrase, World Changers Made Here. I have seen the way you have made a difference already: to this campus community, to the local community and to the world. I know that you are poised to continue with that same commitment. World Changers for a changing world.

I would leave with you two texts that as President I seek to live by daily:

Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

I John 4:7,8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Blessings to each of you!

Andrea Luxton President

PRESIDENT’S CHARGE

Graduates of Andrews University, you now start a new chapter in your personal

and professional life. I would ask you to approach this particular chapter with

clarity of purpose and commitment to values and faith that represent Andrews

University, your alma mater. As a University we claim, “World Changers Made

Here.” You are now poised to show the truth of that claim.

While at this University you have engaged with your faculty and staff who

have chosen to be both Christians and exemplary professionals. They have

invited you and your peers to consistently live out your faith with relevance

and integrity. They have encouraged you to reach the highest goals academically

and professionally. And, today, I ask you to embrace the opportunities and

challenges that await you with passion and conviction. Carry with you the best

of all that you have learned here and use your increased knowledge and skills to

add meaningful quality and spiritual significance to this world.

You leave here with a degree but this is certainly not the end of your learning.

Continue to seek honestly for the truth. Desire to keep learning more of God’s

kingdom. Search for opportunities where you can bring freshness, healing and

creativity. Advance your profession with enthusiasm and integrity. Live with

warmth, compassion and energy. With all this, always remember to be still and

hear the gentle guiding whisper of God.

So I charge you, as graduates of Andrews University, to live by these values and

ideals. And may the love of God, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the

fellowship of the Holy Spirit go with you always.

Academic RegaliaAndrews University adheres to the academic costume code for universities in the United States, initially drafted in 1885 and revised in 1932. A committee on Acetonic Costumes and Ceremonies, appointed by the American Council on Education, has, on different occasions, reviewed the costume and made several significant changes.

The gown for the associate degree is gray in color and styled the same as a bachelor’s degree gown. The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. It is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The gown is designed to be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctoral degree has bell-shaped sleeves. It is designed to be worn open or closed. These gowns are usually black, but the Andrews University doctoral gown is dark blue and trimmed in black velvet with the University seal on the left lapel near the top.

The length of the hood worn for the bachelor’s degree, if one is used, is three feet; for the master’s degree, three and one-half feet; and for the doctoral degree, four feet. The hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. The Andrews University hood is lined with dark blue and gold. Inasmuch as members of the Andrews University faculties hold degrees from a large number of colleges and universities, space does not permit identification of each.

The colors of the velvet borders associated with the different fields of learning for degrees and adopted by Andrews University are as follows:

Agriculture ..............................MaizeArchitecture .............................Blue VioletArts, Letters, Humanities .........WhiteBusiness ....................................DrabDentistry ...................................Lilac Economics .................................CopperEducation ..................................Light BlueEngineering ...............................OrangeFine Arts ...................................BrownJournalism ................................CrimsonLaw ............................................Purple

At Andrews University undergraduate candidates wear hoods. They also wear cords or medallions signifying that they are members of a National Honor Society and graduating with honors. The identifying colors are as follows:

Graduating with Honors ........................................................ Gold, blue and white cord Graduating with a Cumulative GPA of 3.50 or Better ..................................White cord Member of a Departmental National Honor Society ........................................ Red cord Member of Phi Kappa Phi. ....................................................... Medallion on blue ribbon

The designation “J.N. Andrews Honors Scholar” signifies completion of the J. N. Andrews Honors Program’s Scholars’ Alternative General Education Studies curriculum, submission of a senior Honors Thesis, and achievement of a 3.5 overall GPA.

Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude or Cum Laude means an undergraduate student has the following minimum overall GPA earned on the A, B, C, D, F scale (A=4).

Summa Cum Laude ........................ 3.90–4.00 Magna Cum Laude .......................... 3.75–3.89 Cum Laude ..................................... 3.50–3.74

Additional cords, medallions and stoles worn at Andrews University ceremonies are as follows:

Membership in the Society of Andrews Scholars requires a minimum grade point average of 3.33, completion of the J.N. Andrews Honors Program’s Scholars’ Alternative General Education Studies curriculum, and submission of a se-nior Honors Thesis. Those students who meet the previous criteria and attain an overall GPA of 3.5 earn the additional designation “J.N. Andrews Honors Scholar.” The designation “J.N. Andrews Honors Scholar” reflects an undergradu-ate student’s dedication to independent scholarship, interdisciplinary study, the integration of faith and learning, and abiding intellectual curiosity. Each scholar is expected to display the same pioneering spirit as John Nevins Andrews (1829–1883)—scholar, theologian, missionary and third president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adven-tists—who provided the name for this university and the ethos invigorating its mission. A statue of Andrews and his family stands just outside Pioneer Memorial Church.

Undergraduate Leadership Certificate and Minor

Undergraduate Leadership helps students identify their unique strengths and hone their abilities to make a difference. The certificate is a concentrated curriculum that allows students to clarify their contribution to the community. The minor builds on the certificate by diving deeper into the mechanics of leadership. Students engage in a leadership practicum, receiving mentor-ing, accumulating a knowledge base, and designing a growth plan. With a change project and portfolio in hand, they enter the workforce with the confidence and skills to contribute to the “legacy of leadership” of J.N. Andrews.

The Randall Leadership Medallion is awarded to students who have completed the academic requirements and embody the characteristics represented by the symbols on the medallion.

The Lion and the Lamb—Spiritual Leadership, Courage, ServanthoodThe Spyglass—Intentionality, Vision, Leadership CapacitiesThe Oak Tree—Continual Growth of Character, LegacyShaking Hands—Relationships, Teamwork, Collaboration

Student Missionaries and Taskforce Workers

Andrews University is pleased its legacy instills the value of service in the current generation. These young people are not content with the status quo and believe change can occur through the courage and hard work of an individual. Many stu-dents are now planning a gap year of service as part of their college education. They are called "student missionaries" or "task force workers" but ultimately they are volunteers following a higher calling. Taking a year off, putting their academic program, social life, career plans and relationships all on hold is not an easy choice or one to be taken lightly. This is a path paved with character-building challenges.

We wish to thank them for their spirit of service and know that those moments have changed not only their own but the lives of those they served. (Volunteers are wearing silver cords.)

May the LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

Cultural Stoles

Andrews University supports the wearing of University-approved stoles to celebrate the rich cultural

diversity of our campus. The University-approved stoles are:

Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA) Stole

The Adventist Colleges Abroad stole is worn by participants who have studied at an international ACA member institution for a year, providing an integral aspect of the program of study for many Andrews University students with a major in languages. It benefits the student’s cultural, academic and linguistic proficiency. The ACA stole features Andrews University’s colors (blue and gold), the ACA logo and the University logo as well as the flags of the countries in which the student has studied. This commemorative stole emphasizes the University’s global focus and recognizes its students’ decisions to pursue cultural immersion and foreign language learning as a means of embracing this mission.

AULA Latino Stole

The AULA (Andrews University Latino Association) Latino stole is worn by participants who identify with the Latin American cultural heritage. The colors chosen for the stole, red and white, are present in most Latin American flags and represent two important principles. Red symbolizes the sacrifice of those who died fighting for the freedom and liberty of Latin American countries. White represents the hope that Latin American countries would always be free. AULA (written on the stole) refers to the unity of the diverse Latin American cultures represented in the U.S. in search of academic, social, spiritual, financial and emotional dreams and achievements.

Eastern Asian Heritage Stole

The Eastern Asian Heritage stole is worn by participants who identify with the cultural heritage of the countries of China, Japan, Hong Kong, North/South Korea, Taiwan, Macau and Mongolia. Inspired by traditional royal costume, blue represents immortality and advancement, and silver represents grace and sophistication. The flags of each of the seven countries as well as four Eastern Asian symbols appear on the stole: the crane, representing good fortune and longevity, clouds and waves as symbols of power and resilience against adversity, and the cherry blossom representing beauty and purity.

Filipino Bayani Stole

The Filipino Bayani stole is worn by participants who identify with the Filipino American cultural heritage. Inspired by three of the four colors in the Philippine flag, red represents patriotism and valor, blue represents peace, truth and justice, and yellow represents unity, freedom, democracy and sovereignty. The word bayani means “hero.” However, bayani encompasses more than being a hero, it represents a person’s commitment for the greater good, for the community and the nation, and accurately describes the graduates’ success in their academic journeys, and to inspire them to take up the mantle as leaders wherever their aspirations take them.

Indonesian Batik Stole

The Indonesian Batik stole is worn by participants who identify with the Indonesian cultural heritage. The stole is blue and gold, the University colors, and is embellished with batik, a traditional fabric that is an important part of life as an Indonesian. Specific designs are worn for special occasions and other everyday designs are commonly worn in work and academic settings. The Andrews Society of Indonesian Students’ motto is Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which means “Unity in Diversity.” Graduates wear the stole as a way to honor their homeland, the University, and all they have achieved during their time at Andrews.

Kente Stole

The Kente stole is worn by participants who identify with the Pan-African cultural heritage. On the Kente stole the gold emblem is an Adinkra symbol called NEA ONNIM NO SU A, OHU. This translates to “He who does not know can know from learning.” It symbolizes knowledge, lifelong education and the continued quest for knowl-edge. The red, black, green and gold are the Pan-African (people of African birth, descent or heritage) colors.

Southern Asia Cultural Stole

The Southern Asia stole is worn by participants who identify with the cultural heritage of the countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, India, Maldives, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore and Sri Lanka. Though geographically all these countries and cultures are close, there are some sharp differences between them. The paisley (boteh) design in the stole is a common design in South Asia, used in various decorations for celebra-tions of significant events. The colors, green and gold, are represented in the different countries’ flags and/or have some significant cultural significance to each country. The stole is presented to graduates by previous Southern Asian graduates, akin to the elders in the community giving advice to the youth before they become independent individuals.

Program NotesThe Processional

Regalia: A Grand Processional on DiaDemata, by Kenneth Logan, professor of music, received its premiere presentations at the Andrews University spring 2001 commencements. University President Niels-Erik Andreasen commissioned Regalia in August 1999 for use in University commencements. Its title draws inspiration both from the traditional “regalia” garments of commencement services and from a hymn text associated with the hymn tune on which the composition is based. DiaDemata is that grand melody graced by the regal words, “Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne; Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns, All music but its own!...” (Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal, No. 223)

Thus, on this ceremonial occasion the organ processional evokes this surpassing context—the resplendent coronation of Jesus Christ—in which all earthly ceremony pales by comparison. In keeping with University tradition, Regalia provides distinct fanfares before the processionals of graduates, faculty and president’s party. In the remaining sections the emphasis falls on transformations of the DiaDemata melody.
