A High-Five for theFood Experts
While many of us enjoy eating, foodcan be a confusing topic. New data andscientific studies are constantlyemerging, changing views about sugar, fat, portion sizes, and much more.Luckily, there are professionals whointerpret that nutritional information, explain it and prescribe advice in a waythat’s easy to digest—dietitians.
Registered dietitians and registereddietitian nutritionists have completed adegree and training in the field ofnutrition and dietetics, as well aspassed a national exam.
Many people consult a dietitianin order to develop a personalizedeating plan. Rather than prescribing aone-size-fits-all strategy, dietitiansrecognize that each person hasdifferent nutritional needs and goalsbased on overall health, genetics, exercise and eating habits, and otherfactors. They can also provideadvice to help manage conditionslike high cholesterol, high bloodpressure, diabetes, and food allergiesor sensitivities.
Dietitians work in a variety ofsettings, including hospitals andassisted living communities; schools, grocery stores and restaurants;and government agencies andresearch centers.

Just so You Know
Easter...bythe NumbersFor the past 317
years, Easter Sundayhas been observedand celebrated 76times in March andthe rest (241) in April.Since 1700, theearliest that EasterSunday wascelebrated wasMarch 22nd in 1761.The latest was April25th which occurredin 1734, 1886, and1943. For futurereference, April 25thwill also serve asEaster Sunday in2038, 2190, and2258!
Aren’t they cute? And they are so easyto make! The hardestpart is choosingbetween the chickand the bunny! Joinus on Tuesday,March 15th in theActivity Room at 2:00and let Spring beginwith these adorablelittle critters!
Bunny Basics:Rabbits vs. Hares
This spring, you might see abright-eyed, bobtailed creaturehopping out to say hello. But willyou be able to tell if your new friendis a rabbit or a hare? While theybelong to the same family, rabbitsand hares are actually separatespecies. Here’s a guide to help youknow the difference:
What’s in a name? “Bunny” is justa cute synonym for either a rabbit ora hare, although generally people usethe nickname to refer to rabbits, especially baby ones.
Fine-tuned features. Hares arebigger animals than rabbits andappear long and lean, while rabbitsare usually shorter and rounder.
While both species have large ears, hares’ ears are more prominent, and their huge hind legs help themreach a running speed of upto 50 mph.
Bunny behavior. Rabbits areknown for being social creatures, and they make excellent pets. With the exception of thecottontail, rabbits live in elaborateunderground burrows. Hares, however, are solitary andlive aboveground.
Brand-new and adorable, too.Newborn hares, called leverets, areable to live on their own within onehour after birth—they are born fullydeveloped, with open eyes and afull fur coat. But baby rabbits(called kittens or kits) are hairless, blind and helpless, and are carefullycared for in their mother’s nest.
Hungry hoppers. Rabbits mostlyeat soft foods like stems, grassesand vegetables, while hares chowdown on tougher foods like bark, twigs and shoots.

Employee Spotlight: MARIAH. RODRIGUEZ
For our Employee Spotlight forMarch, we chose one of the nicestand hardest working peoplehere...Maria H. Rodriguez from theHousekeeping Department!
Maria is originally from Connecticut(BRRR! Too cold!) but moved toFlorida from New Jersey in May of lastyear. She likes Florida but not theheat. In fact, she misses the snow. Can you believe that? Who misses thesnow? (Really need to talk to that girl!)
Maria is the extremely proudmother of three and grandmother offive...I know, how does she look soyoung? It’s a secret and she’snot telling!
Maria’s first job in Florida is here atAmerican House and anyone can tellthat she really enjoys working here. She loves being with the residentsand every day when she goes home, she is happy because she has made adifference in the residents’ lives. Shesaid that just putting a smile on theface of a resident makes her day.
She loves to clean (now, how manypeople can say that?) and enjoyslistening to the stories told by theresidents. It makes her feel like a partof the family.
In her spare time, Maria’s hobbies(besides cleaning) includescrapbooking, photography, dancingand video games.
Maria shares with us a beautifulsentiment: “Our residents do not livein our work place, we work in theirhomes.” Bravo, Maria.Congratulations on being chosen asour March Employee Spotlight andthank you for everything you do.
